President’s Report September 2016 Steve McCombs—KY Region President
The year is just flying by. September is here, school is starting and hopefully the heat is backing off. I don’t know about you, but I’ll take the heat, over the icy cold any day. Our Club is still in a heat up mode, with the September 10th-11th DE coming up and more driving tours from our activity chairs. I would like to push the Huber Winery drive on October 15th. It is only seven
as. So I ask this year’s new members to help us out with some new ideas and suggestions. Maybe you might want to do a drive or even a tour of your business. We’re blessed to have some very talented people as members, why not share those talents with the membership? We haven’t preformed any Tech secessions, or helpful events, even if it isn’t directly Porsche related. I ask you just to give it a thought and think outside the box. Maybe, just maybe, some of us would be interested and attend an activity, demo, presentation, or what ever (as long as you’re not selling something). We’ve never promoted that and we can start now.
“We’re blessed to have some very talented people as members…” weeks away and it will be our 15th continuous anniversary meet up with three to four other PCA Regions. It’s always a good time and it’s really close. Please plan on attending. Let’s try to have the largest gathering of KyPCA members ever at Huber’s that day! I would like to thank the new members for getting involved and going on the drives and especially doing the DE events. The monthly meetings are attended by at least two new members each month. I feel it is very important for the existing membership to make the new people feel welcome and a part of the Club. Our Region is growing and with new people comes new ide-
Also keep in mind that our Officer elections happen at our November meeting. So if you would like to run for office please let us know. I will need a nomination chair volunteer for gathering candidates for 2017 offices. Please let me know at the September meeting or email me if you are interested. As a side note, I would love to return as president for a second term, if you will have me. But remember, all positions are open. Keep getting involved with the Club. We are in the best position we have ever been with activities, dinner meeting, DE events, and most important of all, great car people. See you at the September meeting: Mammas, Mustard, Pickles & Barbecue 102 Bauer Ave. St. Matthews Steve McCombs, 2016 President

2016 Activities Start your Labor Day weekend off with a fun drive down to Hodgenville for a visit to Lincoln's birthplace this Saturday 9/3. Along the way, we will be stopping for lunch at Leha's Red Castle Hamburgers and maybe even walk across the town square to the ice cream shop. One note about Leha's....it is a very small place so depending upon how many of us attend, we could do a good job of making it a busy morning for them. Unless we are fortunate enough to all find seats, let's plan on getting the burgers to go and just linger around the cars while we eat. We will be gathering at the park across from the Bluegrass dealership. Please arrive between 9:30 and 9:45 AM so that we have time for the driver's meeting. Departure time is 10AM. Send me a note at mailto:terencehmorris@att.net if you have any questions. Hope to see you in September. If you plan to attend these drives, let me know so that I can be sure to have enough copies of the route printed off. Thanks, T.H.

MEMBERS ONLY PRIVATE FACEBOOK EVENTS GROUP We have created a new way to share information with you about all of the planned activities for the club. This w ill be in addition to the other tools w e already use such as email announcements, the website and the monthly editions of the Pacesetter. A new page has been created on Facebook that is dedicated to activities and events. This page will be accessible only to club members and will contain detailed information about each planned activity, including dates, times, maps, and activity overview. Your use of this page also helps me see how many people are interested in each planned event as you are able to indicate that you are going, might be going, or will not be going. If you are already on Facebook and would like access to the page, please let me know and I will get you added. By design, it w ill not show up in a Facebook search and you have to be explicitly added to the group in order to see and receive page updates. I will just need your Facebook page name to get you added. If you are not currently on Facebook, I invite you to give it a try as it is a very powerful and convenient tool for communication. If you aren't sure how to get started, let me know and I would be glad to try and help. Facebook interaction can be as little or as much as you wish. Thanks! I look forward to seeing you on many of our outings! As usual, if there are things that Edward and I can do to make the outings more meaningful to you, please don't hesitate to drop us a note. We are always looking for new ideas. Regards, T.H. Morris mailto:terencehmorris@att.net

From the Editor’s Desk By Belinda Schweinhart Finally got one of these newsletters out on time. But what else can I do? I’m stuck at home and can’t drive just yet. Yep, I did it. Sprained my right ankle at the fair. I’ve never sprained (or broken) anything before. Got a pair of crutches but I am so uncoordinated on them Mark rented a wheelchair! It’s only fair that he has to push me around. After all, it’s partly his fault. When I tripped on a curb Mark grabbed for me but ended up falling on me instead. It was quite a spectacle, in full view of a crowd. I haven’t seen any Facebook footage yet, for which I’m grateful. A couple of really nice “kids” helped out by picking me up and putting me in a golf cart. Then another
drove me to our car. That’s when we decided to go to the ER. Five hours later, it was “just” a sprain. Because we had purchased a book of tickets, we attended the fair several more times to
go to some free concerts with the wheelchair. (You can get tickets really cheap when you enter something in the fair.) Even though I didn’t win a ribbon, this was definitely a fair we will never forget.
Are you on Facebook yet? https://www.facebook.com/groups/50109424636/

Minutes from Membership Meeting - August 2016 By Dan Stewart, Secretary The KYPCA monthly meeting was held at the home of Jim and Bobbie Doll on Aug 8. President McCombs opened the meeting thanking our hosts for the delicious food. The neighbors seemed to appreciate the 20 or so Porsches lining their street as well. The group discussed the great drive to the Valley View Ferry Crossing across the Kentucky River on Aug 7. Seeing 4 Porsches on the river ferry is a very unusual sight. Thanks again TH and Edward for the wonderful activities and the great turnout from club members. DE registration for the Fall Fastival is open, with 4 weeks until the event (Set 9,10, 11). Come on out and learn about the Driver Education events. Even if you don’t want to drive your precious car on the track, come join the fun at the party on Friday and Saturday night. Anthony gave an overview of the membership of the club. We have 277 primary members, 164 affiliate members, total 441. 7 new members joined in July, and we had 6 non-renewals (these folks have sold their cars).
TH and Edward discussed the upcoming drive on Sept 3 to the birthplace of President Abraham Lincoln. See the website for more details. They also suggested the Aug 20 event to Ky Horse park may be postponed until a later date, we need a leader for the event as well. October 2 an event will be at the Barrel House and Frankenboom Ice Cream in Lexington. Remember, don’t be a stranger in the club, get involved. There are events for everyone, and if you don’t see one, suggest one or better yet volunteer to lead one. The club has a book titled “ How to Build a Car” in circulation for members with young children. Those who have read it suggest it to all others with children. Be sure to see if you can read it too. September meeting to be held at Mammaa’s, Mustard, Pickles & Barbecue in St. Matthews. October meeting to be held at Rooster’s on Shelbyville Road. As always, check the website for the most up to date information, and join the Facebook page as well.
WAIVERS REQUIRED FOR MINOR PARTICIPANTS **Important update for those planning on attending club activities with their underage family members** We are excited to offer a variety of activities to club members. Occasionally, minors attend these events and this is good to see because it is important that we continue the family friendly culture. We are all well accustomed to signing the waiver supplied by PCA national immediately prior to departing on our drives. We also have forms specifically addressing the participation by minors. In the past, we have been able to utilize the single signature of the guardian/parent attending the event but this is no longer the case. A recent development has led the insurance company to state that unless both guardians/parents of the minor sign the waiver, then neither the adult attendee or the minor attendee are covered by insurance. If you plan to bring your under the age of 18 family members along, please print off the waiver and have both parents sign the document and bring it along with you to the activity. A link to the waiver form is included below. Minor Waiver Form from PCA National Website link: https://www.pca.org/resource/waiver-minors

To be published in the August 2016 issue of “Die Porsche Kassette”
There are two words that don’t go well together: “Porsche” and “foam”. As anyone who has had a new (newer) Porsche for 4 or 5 years knows, the air conditioning vents start to spew bits of sticky dark stuff. This stuff comes out of every A/C vent including the windshield defrost and the footwell heating outlets. What is this? With time, heat and humidity, all of
Heat: The hotter the environment the quicker it will deteriorate Humidity: The more humid the environment the quicker it will crumble Therefore northern Porsches and those garaged and kept away from the sun and the elements will keep their foam a bit longer, but don’t get me wrong, even stored under the best conditions, if the car sees real world roads and conditions, that foam will deteriorate at some point. When it starts to happen you will first notice some very small “dirt-like” particles on your clothing and on the interior (dash, seats, carpet, etc.). As time goes on in a few more months you will notice the particles getting larger and larger and eventually you can see chunks of foam trapped behind the air vent slats.
“Wear goggles and don’t wear white!”
What can be done? You can open up the air handler system to remove and rebuild the air dams with new foam or tape (duct tape is used effectively) but this is very time consuming which can get expensive.
the foam which makes up the air diverter dams in the A/C’s air handler system starts to deteriorate and crumble. As air is forced through, chunks of this foam starts to make its way to the air outlets and eventually make it out into the cabin. There is nothing you can do preventively to avoid it short of not keeping your Porsches longer than 4-5 years. The deterioration of the foam depends on several conditions: Time: 4-5 years after the manufacture date it starts to deteriorate
Page 26
PaceSetter
Or, you can be patient, remove the foam chunks from the vents and wait. You can use a small pick tool to pull out the pieces of foam through the slats.
September2016
You can also help purge the system quicker by closing all the vents but one, running the A/C fan at it’s highest setting and putting a vacuum cleaner nozzle right on the open vent. Once this vent is cleared, close it and move to another one and repeat.
But the best advise I can give you is what I tell my customers: Wear goggles and don’t wear white! For more information on A/C foam and more, please visit my website: www PedrosGarage.com . Happy Porsche’ing,
