Welcome to Horsens

The 8th biggest Danish city, known for its concerts and cultural events. Add to that varied nature, containing the only river in Denmark, many of the country’s “mountains” and an island populated with wild rabbits.

Visit The Prison and discover an unusual museum experience that’s fun and educational for both children and adults. Try a friendly competition around the inmates’ old ping pong table - like I did with with my familily. I also recommend exploring the old streets of industrial times, where art and great stories are merely waiting to be found. Experience the amazing inflow of light at Horsens Art Museum, which houses the largest collection of artworks by the artist Michael Kvium. Explore the apartments in the workers’ living quarters at Denmark’s Industrial Museum – they feel as if the imaginary residents just went off to work. Have an adventure in our beautiful nature. I recommend hiking around Endelave, the island of wild rabbits. This island is just a short ferry ride away and can be visited on a day trip. I hope this guide will inspire you to loads of experiences – and wish you a great stay! Best regards

The name “Horsens” comes from the words “hors” (horse) and “næs” (headland). Thus, “Horsens” means “the headland with the horses”.

Russia’s royal family lived in Horsens

In 1780 Katharina the Great banished four princes and princesses to Horsens, where they lived for the rest of their lives in a large manor on the Town Square.

Horsens hosts the largest medieval festival in Northern Europe. The impressive festival weekend held in August might be the closest you will ever come to travelling in time.

ABOUT HORSENS

Just north of Horsens you will find Denmark’s highest “mountains”. With 172,54 metres, Yding Skovhøj is the highest one.

The Danish explorer Vitus Bering (1681-1741) comes from Horsens. He is called “the Zar’s Danish Columbus” and he proved, among other things, that Asia and North America are not connected. Thus, there is a memorial park in Horsens named after him – the Vitus Bering Park.

Nothing beats a day at the stands

In Horsens, football is the biggest sport – at least if you are here as a spectator. Visit the city’s stadium, CASA Arena Horsens, where you can follow the area’s largest football club, AC Horsens, when they run onto the field in the premier league of Danish football, 3F Superligaen.

AC Horsens was founded over 25 years ago, in 1994, as a collaboration between FC Horsens and Horsens Forenede Sportsklubber. The club’s dream of moving up in the Superligaen finally became a reality in 2005 with a series of 20 matches without defeat – including 12 consecutive victories. Both are still club records today. With only a couple of detours to Denmark’s second league, AC Horsens has since played against Denmark’s best football teams. The team answers the nickname “Den Gule Fare” or “The Yellow Danger” which is also the name of the club’s official fan club, and you may recognise the players by their yellow and black uniform colours.

The club values are unity, humility and hard work. This is also reflected in the attitude of the players , the stadium and the fans. Horsens is also home to Horsens IC, one of Denmark’s best basketball teams. The team plays its home games in the basketball league, Basketligaen, in Forum Horsens. The same court is used by the ladies in the handball club, Horsens Håndboldklub, who are in Denmark’s second handball series. Nothing beats a nice day in the stands. Apart from the favourite team winning!

Experience history

In Horsens your backpack will be filled with entertaining and educational experiences. Take the plunge into our contemporary history, learn about the industrialisation or get a glimpse into village life, when grandad was a kid.

Get an exciting glimpse of our museums.

For many years, Horsens was known as a penitentiary city – and it still is. Today, the building, which used to house the Horsens State Penitentiary, is converted into the cultural institution “Fængslet”. Here you can experience festivals and concerts, among other things, or explore the internationally acclaimed Prison Museum.

Do you want to know how living conditions were like in the villages over the past 350 years? Then you should visit the living museum, Glud Museum. Here you can see Denmark’s oldest known farmhouse, take part in fun activities for the family, experience living history in the workshops, or see the large exhibition hall with farm tools, horse carriages, and farming handicrafts.

CULTURE

Taking history to the streets

Are you more interested in experiencing how our own society has changed, then don’t miss Denmark’s Industrial Museum. Here you can watch impressive, historical machines come to life and experience living history in the worker’s living quarters and much more. Also visit the Horsens Museum where you can learn about the Middle Ages, the surrounding area, and the local, world famous explorer Vitus Bering.

The Prison Would you like to put your life into perspective? Visit The Prison (“Fængslet”) and experience the illuminating history and events that played out here.

Fængslet draws your attention with an award-winning museum, concerts, festivals and the opportunity for accommodation in old prison cells. For most people life behind prison bars is an unfamiliar closed world, but at Fængslet, every

If you visit the hostel SleepIn, the prison museum or take part in events at Fængslet, then you meet the illuminating, rough and unpolished world which tells the story of the surroundings. The living museum As soon as you check in at the prison museum, all your senses are brought into play with experiences for your ears, eyes and nose. The museum has won several awards for its exciting exhibitions, which give you a different and thoughtprovoking experience. Here you get an extraordinary opportunity to get behind bars and meet former inmates as shadows on the walls or follow an employee through the museum via interactive ID-cards.

18

But don’t worry. Fængslet will not lock you up. Contrary to the great escape artist Carl Lorentzen, who dug his way out of the State Prison through an 18-metre-long tunnel, you are free to leave the prison again. Extraordinary experiences Fængslet is something else and much more than rough walls, prison yards and cell blocks. It is a modern cultural bastion filled with life, activities and experiences all year round. A captivating conference center with all the facilities that companies can wish for. A hostel where you can sleep in cells. And a house with office space rental packed with entrepreneurs and great energy. In many ways a beacon in Horsens that makes the city something special.

Travel back in time in the Workers’ Living Quarters

Denmark’s Industrial Museum Do you recognize the scent of “the good old days“? If not, then you can experience it in authentic surroundings at Denmark’s Industrial Museum. The museum lets you discover the amazing story of how the industrialisation shaped our society and the way we live.

As soon as you enter the museum, you can feel it: You have stepped back in time and now you can really get an impression of what life was like for your parents, your grandparents and their parents. Do your children also love touching everything they see? Then there is nothing to worry about because this is heaven for curious fingers! At Denmark’s Industrial Museum, there is room for play, and if you follow the footprints going through the buildings, you will be sure to experience it all. Children can become industrial spies for a day, try attending a class as if you lived in 1950’s Denmark, visit a grocery shop in the shopping street or stand behind the counter in the old radio & TV shop.

“In Denmark’s Industrial Museum the attention to detail and authenticity is overwhelming”.

In the Workers’ Living Quarters, your sight as well as your other senses are brought into play. Here you can explore not only how people lived in the old days but also what they ate, because in the kitchen the aunties are often preparing dishes from the old days, and you are welcome to taste! In addition to this, the museum is staffed with volunteers and passionate people who are enthusiastic about their field, so you can get an answer to all your questions. You will notice this, the minute you enter: the enjoyable atmosphere and the friendly, helpful staff. That is exactly what makes you feel welcome at once.

Activities in open air We love big experiences and small ones. And of course, those magic experiences you can only really have on a holiday. Horsens has an abundance of them all. Take your family sailing in a canoe or rent bikes and enjoy the wild nature together. You can meet cute farm animals or go on a hunt for the adrenaline rush.

At The Children’s Farm, the children love to experience a cow getting milked and then getting to taste the milk afterwards. It is almost just as wild to meet all the other farm animals, like guinea pigs, hens, geese, ducks, goats, sheep and horses. Great fun for those nature-loving young ones! For the competitive family we recommend a game of Medieval Mini Golf at Horsens City Camping. In the middle of the 12hole mini golf

A lively afternoon at Horsens Play Centre will fulfil every childish dream of playing in bouncy castles and jungle gyms, with slot machines and other challenging entertainment equipment. When the whole family wants to eat out, the menu does not always have to be french fries and nuggets. Horsens is home to several child-friendly restaurants with baby chairs, smiling staff and food and drink that cater to both young ones and adults. Whatever you decide to go for, you can almost always find an ice-cream nearby.

Horsens Play Centre

Yes, we do know that it happens. The showers in Denmarks are the very reason that everything is so lovely and green outside. Luckily, we have plenty of experiences in Horsens that are indifferent to weather conditions.

In Aqua Forum, you can easily spend most of a day, because here you find warm water pools for the tiny ones, water slides, springboards, and entertaining pool toys spread out on 4 different pools. We do love action-filled activities, when we are on holiday. If you are anything like us, then you should visit Horsens Play Centre and try the bouncing castle or the rollercoasters, compete in air hockey or the many other games of this play centre.

Bring your children to Hotel Pejsegården in Brædstrup, where you can all have fun competing in the bowling alley. Do you know a train enthusiast? Then seek shelter and go back in time on “Denmark’s most beautiful railway”, Veteranbanen Bryrup-Vrads. At Denmark’s Industrial Museum, you can see, explore, and try how life was in the good old days. It is an amazing experience for all who love touching and feeling things. You can also visit Horsens Library

35

and enjoy a book, a magazine, a free event or simply a quiet moment. Visit the prison museum and experience the new exhibition called “The Underworld”, where the old methods of punishment come to life. While at the museum, you can also hear the story of the famous escape artist Carl Lorentzen, who dug his way out through an 18meter-long tunnel.

Aqua Forum

Do you remember? The sensation of weightlessness when gliding through the water, the smile on the children’s lips, and the relaxed feeling which spreads all over your body, because suddenly, you have used all your muscles?

On a trip to the waterpark, all your senses wake up. Even though the children love speed and splashing for hours, and you yourself most of all need a good round of relaxing time, then Aqua Forum fulfills all your needs. You can exercise your full body by taking a fast swim in the long Sports Pool. Are you more into things that will thrill you? Then try the Diving Pool where you can jump into the water from either the 1-m or 3-m springboards or from the 5-m-tall diving tower.

“A trip to the waterpark Aqua Forum offers both speed and excitement. Don’t forget to try the 56 meter-long waterslide”.

Try the massage jets, the bubble bench, the counter current channels and the waterfall. Or let your children splash around and “climb” both big and small pool toys. If you have younger children, you can all have a great time in the lovely, warm water in the Baby Pool. And here the view to the pool areas is good, enabling you to keep an eye on the bigger children gamboling in other parts of the waterpark. Also try the spa bath, the steam bath, the sauna, and the shared tylarium. This is pure pleasure combined with complete relaxation.

The Sports Pool Water temperature of 27°C (80.6°F) The pool is 25 metres long with 8 swimming lanes. The Diving Pool Water temperature of 27°C (80.6°F) The pool is 4 metres deep. Endelave

On the island of Endelave there is high probability that you will see a wild rabbit kitten happily jumping around, because Endelave is known as “The Rabbit Island”.

Did you know?

...that at the northern tip of the island, you can experience a special phenomenon? Onshore breakers and flat water meet in the absolute middle.

In Endelave village you’ll find a lot of old halftimbered farms, especially near the village pond. Here you will also find a grocery store and eateries. In the Medical Herb Garden, you can enjoy your lunch and explore the garden of organic herbs, medical plants and flowers. While on the island, take a dip in the clear and clean water which is perfect for diving. Under the surface there is a thriving bottom flora and various fish species. Read more about recreational beaches on Endelave on page 64.

42

Hiking Endelave’s coastline can be done in about 6 hours, but you can also see the island from the back of a horse from Endelave guided horseback riding tours, rent a bicycle, go on a tractor trip, or have a guided tour. If you feel like staying a bit longer, extend your visit and stay overnight. We recommend sleeping at Endelave Kro, in a tent at Endelave Camp Site, or rent a vacation house at Kærhuset.

Active on Endelave

During the summer, you can participate in an abundance of activities on Endelave - for free. The association called Endelave Aktiv Ø makes sure you get your heart rate up with activities such as crossfit, running, hiking, and martial arts. They also help you find inner peace through yoga and relaxation of the muscles.

Alrø

A small, idyllic island with halftimbered houses, great eateries and giant Danish patty shells.

Did you know?

...that traces have been found from people on Alrø dating back to the Stone Age?

The island has pleasant eateries, and you can even enjoy your dinner in a former pig house. Alrø is visited by windsurfers, kitesurfers, kayakers, anglers, and yachtsmen who use the waters around and great weather conditions on the island.

Did you know?

Møllegården

...that one customer managed to eat 5 giant patty shells at Café Alrø?

45

In the southern parts, you’ll find the old steamboat pier, which is a popular excursion spot all year round. This is also the place where the small bicycle-ferry crosses the inlet of Horsens Fjord and connects Alrø with Hjarnø and Snaptun in the summer. Find out more about Alrø at VisitOdder.com.

ISLAND HOPPING

Café Alrø

There is a special kind of atmosphere on Alrø. The winding road, the scattered halftimbered houses, and the beautiful nature with the everpresent coastline. Danish author, Morten Korch, did in fact live and work on Alrø for several periods, where he let himself be inspired by the surroundings on the island. The farms such as Bakkegården and Møllegården can be recognised in his writings.

Hjarnø & Samsø In the inlet of Horsens Fjord, just 800 m from the mainland, you find the island of Hjarnø.

The crossing from the mainland only takes five minutes, so it is easy to get to the island on the little Hjarnø Ferry on one of the 30 daily departures between Hjarnø and the harbour village of Snaptun.

Roadside vegetables on Hjarnø

On the island’s southern coast, you find the “Viking Ships”, a stone row probably from the Viking Age. The church on Hjarnø is the second smallest in Denmark, and the votive ship hanging under the vault is a model of a Viking ship. On the island, you find a restaurant, a camping site, and a gallery. And in the summer, a bicycle-ferry runs between Alrø, Hjarnø and Snaptun.

Travel to Hjarnø on a 5-minute ferry ride

The famous Samsø potatoes

The sandy soil and the warm island climatemake up the perfect conditions for the cultivation of Denmark’s “national vegetable”. To salute the tiny tuber, an annual competition is held where “Samsø’s best open potato sandwich” is picked. Samsø is also called “Denmark’s pantry” because of the island’s numerous road stands and farm shops. The nature, the landscape, and the terrain change for each kilometre you go, and with few cars on the roads, the conditions for going on a bike trip are excellent. At VisitSamsoe.dk/en you can find maps with three different bicycle routes. On both Tunø and Samsø, annual music festivals are held.

The hilly countryside Only a stone’s throw from Horsens, the hilly countryside of “Bakkelandet” looms. Presided over by the town of Brædstrup, the area is characterised by a unique animal life, lots of lakes, forests and some of Denmark’s highest peaks.

Ring Lake

“Bakkelandet” is great for mountainbiking

Are there mountains in Denmark?

The river Gudenå and lake Mossø

There are many Danish hilltops whose ancient names include the word “mountain” and, therefore, we do not distinguish sharply between hills and mountains. In the area around Horsens you find four of Denmark’s 21 mountains. Three of these are located in the Bakkelandet area and may be climbed by both younger and older adventurers.

53

The rolling forests and beautiful valleys hold something for the mountaineer, the canoe lover, the history nerd and the outdoor enthusiast. Adventures which your family will not forget. You’ll find “Bakkelandet” some 20 km to the northwest of Horsens. Here, you can visit the river Gudenå, The Uncovered Bridge, Vestbirk Hydroelectric Plant, the mill Klostermølle, the vantage point Sukkertoppen, the vantage point Yding Skovhøj and some of the most beautiful lakes in Denmark.

NATURE EXPERIENCES

When hunger strikes during your adventure in the Bakkeland area, you will find several delicious eateries in the vicinity. Enjoy a classic lunch at Det Gamle Posthus or in the restaurant of Hotel Pejsegården. A short drive from the centre of Brædstrup and close to the gently flowing river Gudenå, you will also find the restaurant Det Lille Røgeri and the café at Sdr. Vissing Torvehal. At Fru Skov in Brædstrup, you can enjoy a nice cup of

coffee while you look for delicious tea, coffee, spices and other specialties or new gourmet utensils. At Water of Life you find exclusive brands of whiskey, gin, rum, port or champagne, and even attend different tastings. Over the course of the year, several shopping events are also held in the city, such as late-night shopping and the annual market day. The latter causes a major influx of shoppers who want to strike a bargain.

Can you imagine? For 85 years, the old railway bridge lay buried, forgotten by many. But now it has been dug out and restored, so everyone can enjoy the beautiful craftmanship of the engineers.

The Uncovered Bridge is located in an area of great scenic beauty north-west of Horsens and is visited by more than 100.000 guests each year. It was originally built as a part of the railway between Bryrup and Horsens in 1899, and at the time of the opening it was the tallest bridge in The Nordic Countries. Today, you can ride your bike across the bridge on The Nature Trail Horsens-Silkeborg. You should also go for a walk in the beautiful nature and enjoy your packed lunch at the riverbank.

Are you ready to relax? South of Horsens, a spring trickles out of the ground. This is where the river Gudenå begins its journey, and you get a chance to be very close to nature.

The river Gudenå is Denmark’s longest water course and streches over 150 km, with a water level drop of 70 metres from the sources to its outfall. Whether you want to hike in the Gudenå area, angle, or sail a canoe, then you are in for an amazing trip

in a very scenic landscape. The river starts at the sources in Tørring and runs all the way to Randers. In the area along the river we also recommend climbing the “mountains” with beautiful views and, going horseback riding or taking a trip with a horse carriage.

Klostermølle In the scenic area around the mill of Klostermølle and the hill of Sukkertoppen, you find the river Gudenå as well as Jutland’s second largest lake, Mossø.

Did you know?

…that in the Middle Ages, a Benedictine abbey was located here? There are only few remains, but the monks dammed up the river Gudenå and led the water through a canal to the abbey. In this way, the monks could use the water for both a water mill and a system for irrigating their meadows.

62

The mill of Klostermølle was built by monks of the Benedictine Order in the 1100s, and in 1872 it was converted into a paper mill. A fire in 1973 put an end to the production, and since then the mill has displayed a public exhibition about the mill’s history and the industry based on water power that operated here based. Here, nature is varied with a rich animal and bird life, and therefore the area is perfect as an excursion spot. In the northern end of the barn at Klostermølle, there is a bird watching tower from where you have an amazing view.

From the trickle of Gudenå to the spectacular view at Sukkertoppen.

…that Sukkertoppen (Sugar Hill) gets its name from the sugar-like sand, which today is covered with grass? The mountain top used to be much more cropped, which resulted in an excellent vantage point for spotting enemies from afar.

63

Sukkertoppen (Sugar Hill) at Mossø is all about hiking trails combined with one of the best vistas of the river Gudenå and Søhøjlandet. have been found Traces of a fortification from the Viking Age at the southern side of Sukkertoppen. And it is not hard to imagine, that this has been a strategically good place to take cover.

Beaches & bathing lakes In Horsens we both have lovely recreational beaches as well as secluded bathing lakes. Here you have our best recommendations for great bathing experiences in nature.

Husodde Beach, Horsens Husodde Beach on the northern side of the inlet of Horsens Fjord is the area’s only Blue Flag-beach, and it is without doubt one of the most popular places to bathe in Horsens. In the summer season, a bathing jetty is put up on the beach which is frequently used by both water lovers and crab fishers. There is a playground and public toilets at the beach, as well as the opportunity to play mini golf or buy an ice cream at the neighbouring Horsens City Camping.

Ring Lake, Brædstrup On the outskirts of Brædstrup, you find the Ring Lake which is one of the area’s most popular bathing lakes. Besides the excellent bathing water, as a visitor you can enjoy a 42 m long, U-shaped bathing jetty with two boarding ladders, and a thick layer of soft beach sand. There are public toilets by the lake as well as tables and benches, where you and your loved ones can have a picnic.

Langelinie City Beach, Horsens Only 2 km from the pedestrian street, you find Langelinie Beach, the area’s newest recreational beach and one of the popular gathering places in the city during the summer. Here you can take a swim from the 100 m long bathing jetty, relax in the soft sand, play beach volleyball or walk the rope on the slackline on the beach. There are public toilets and showers at the beach, and during summer, activities for young and old are arranged.

The Beaches of Endelave Just off the inlet of Horsens Fjord lies the charming rabbit island of Endelave, where you get no less than 20 km of coastline with shallow, child friendly water and four great recreational beaches. Once on Endelave, don’t miss out on a visit to the Medical Herb Garden. Read more about experiences on Endelave at VisitHorsens.com.

Danish “smørrebrød”

Denmark is world famous for the “smørrebrød”: an open sandwich where the base is a slice of rye bread spread with butter or grease, which is then topped with a good layer of cold cuts. The Danes have enjoyed “smørrebrød” since the 1880s, where the Industrialisation meant that many workers spent their days away from home, and therefore had to bring a packed lunch with them.

Danish

Did you know, that the pastries known all around the world as “Danish”, actually go by the name “Wienerbrød” (bread from Vienna) in Denmark, and that they date back to 1850? At that time a strike among the Danish bakers meant that the bakeries had to hire, among others, Austrian bakers who brought with them previously unknown baking traditions and techniques to Denmark. Their pastry lay the foundation stone for the Danish or “Wienerbrød” you can buy in the country’s bakeries today.

Scandic Bygholm Park

Unique accommodation If you want to spend the night in historical surroundings, then visit Jørgensens Hotel in the beautiful old mansion, the hostel SleepIn Fængslet in the former Horsens State Prison or Scandic Bygholm Park, located in a manor from 1775.

If you prefer scenic surroundings, we have a string of accommodation options to choose from. Visit Horsens City Camping by Horsens Fjord, the Danhostel at the nature preserve of Nørrestrand, or wake up to the view of the Bygholm Lake or the river Gudenå. If you love a homely atmosphere, maybe you would rather stay in one of the area’s summer houses, or perhaps in a Bed & Breakfast? No matter where you choose to sleep, we are happy to welcome you as our guest, and we want you to feel this until the lights are put out.

Tour suggestion #2

Go north and visit Odder Would you like to go on a trip outside of Horsens? We recommend the area around Odder, which has an abundance of farm shops and small, authentic experiences. In the town centre, your family is in for a treat with a treasure hunt, charming shopping and lovely places to eat.

Here, you encounter a lovely town for shopping with free parking spaces and a wide selection of chain shops and exciting speciality shops.

“Odder is buzzing with life and activities for both young and old. Begin your quest at Torvet (the town square) and try our treasure hunt – for free!” The treasure hunt brings you by the most important places in town, while you learn about local history and solve tasks along the way. You might come across one of the many events taking place in Odder, such as Market Days, Shopping by Night, Harvest Fair and Halloween. During summer, there are a lot of fun activities for children. Don’t miss out on a trip where you can enjoy nature. Odder is known for its beautiful shores with long, child friendly beaches, charming harbours, green hills, rolling cornfields, wind mills, and blue inlets. Pure idyll!

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TRAVEL GUIDE This travel guide is produced with as much consideration for the environment as at all possible.

It is printed on Cradle-to-Cradle-certified paper and printed using Cradle-to-Cradle-certified inks – both produced entirely without any harmful chemicals or heavy metals. The Cradle-to-Cradle certification is one of the world’s most stringent environmental certifications and it guarantees that a product does not pollute or use the limited resources of the earth but,

rather, is part of nature’s own cycle. It also ensures that the printed products are produced under as environmentally friendly conditions as possible. The wood pulp used in producing the guide is derived from sustainable FSC forestry in Europe. This means that the origin is 100 % controlled – and, at the same time, it ensures that no more wood is felled than may be reproduced by the forests.

Thank you for reading. Helle Berthold Rosenberg Head of Tourism

HERE YOU GO – You need the best help you can get, if you are thinking about moving somewhere new. It’s a jungle out there. Prices, home condition reports, worries and dreams. It’s your future home we are talking about, for goodness sake. That’s why we want to give you a gift card for a guided tour with Mette Munk, who is here to show you, how you could live in Horsens.

She is a goldmine of moving knowledge. She knows on which suburban streets the kids are playing football, where to live if you love being in nature, if you wish to build your own place, or where to look if you want to be within walking distance of the best coffee shops and the art museum.

Mette who, you ask?

In short, she is the best you can get, if you are thinking about moving.

Mette Munk, our settlement expert.

Love Horsens Municipality
