The Coastal Land
Welcome to The Coastal Land
A charming little holiday destination in the heart of Denmark. Here, you're always standing on the edge to the next wonderful experience, and you just have to choose whether to go right or left. Then we’ll make sure, you have a lovely time.
We live in a hilly landscape with high peaks, deep valleys, friendly beaches, lakes, fjords, and islands, shaped by the ice age and by the people who have since lived here. The area simply has natural facilities for what is good for your soul.
Embark on a ferry, sail towards an island and feel your heart rate slow down immediately. Here, it is enough to just look at stars and rabbits and have fun. We call it The East Jutland Archipelago. And if you haven't explored it yet, then it is high time. Are you in the mood for a more maritime holiday atmosphere? Wherever you are in The Coastal Land, there is (almost) always a charming harbour town nearby.
Helle Berthold Rosenberg Head of TourismNext to the coast, of course, is also the land. Set out on the adventurous stream of the river Gudenå or hop on a bike and fight for the mountain jersey. Stop at one of the many farm shops or roadside food stalls and fill your lunch basket with local items before you move on to the next hidden treasure.
If you have come to fill up on cultural impressions and gastronomic experiences, all you must do is look towards the cities and towns of The Coastal Land. They offer art, entrepreneurship, soul, great food, music, green oases, and a rich cultural life. Always, in their very own way.
In short: We take you to the land of views, the land of hiking, the land of culture, the land of treasure hunting, the eat-an-ice-cream-everyday-land, the coastal land, and the everything-in-between-land.
The coast is clear - and you set the course.

Happy children make a great vacation.
We know this all too well. On the following pages we will guide you through tour suggestions, fun activities and experience s which you can explore together, and which ensure a wonderful trip for all.
Denmark’s most family-friendly beaches
Calm and shallow waters, plenty of space, and restaurants and facilities nearby make The Coastal Land the ideal choice for a beach holiday with children. With 266 kilometres of varied coastline, there are plenty of beaches to choose from. Here, you get our recommendations for the best of the best.
Saksild Beach
If you ask the locals, Saksild Beach is the go-to destination in the summer. Clear bathing water, soft sandy ocean floor and accessible coastline as far as the eye can see. All this is complemented by good toilet facilities, lifeguard towers, eateries and the opportunity to rent kayaks, paddleboards and to buy beach gear a few metres from the beach.
Husodde Beach, Horsens
A few kilometres from the centre of Horsens, you find Husodde Strand. A family-friendly, sandy beach with a bathing jetty, a playground, public toilets, and the opportunity to play miniature golf or buy ice cream at the neighbouring Horsens City Camping. The beach is located in a beautiful area with a view of Horsens Fjord.
Storstranden, Juelsminde
Wide, calm and very family-friendly sandy beach which is centrally located near the buzzing life of Juelsminde - Denmark's perhaps most beautiful harbour town. Here, you get really good ice cream, a top-cosy marina and a beach with good facilities, a 62 metres long bathing jetty and plenty of room. Summertime Juelsminde is extremely charming.
Hou Beach
This beach is one of the few beaches in Denmark that is truly wheelchair-accessible. A wheelchair slide leading to a wide bathing jetty means that everyone can get right to the water's edge on a hot summer’s day! That the beach also has a nice sandy ocean floor, beautiful views of Tunø and Samsø, and is located a few hundred metres from the harbour town of Hou ‒well, that is just a huge bonus.
In open air
Nature in The Coastal Land may be beautiful, but it is not just purely for decoration. It is one big playground waiting for curious visitors. In addition to climbing hills and exploring forests, you can meet cute farm animals, play on large tractors or pet an alpaca, to mention but a few.
In Juelsminde Nature Playpark you can climb into the 8-metres high play tower, go down the ski slide all year round, fly away on a cable car or slide, tilt and swing as much as you please. This playpark has something for children of all ages!
Are your children fans of fuzzy and furry animals? Then go to Myllerup Østergård, where you can go on a walk with a bunch of cute alpacas. Or on a ponying horse to the river Gudenå with Fuglsang Horseback Riding. You can also combine a visit to the rabbit island Endelave with a guided tour with Endelave horseback riding tours - a very special island experience that the whole family will love!
Visit Glud Museum - an open-air working museum with historic buildings and outdoor activities. Or let the family loose at Denmark's Ferguson Museum where boyhood dreams of big machines come true.
At Børnebondegården (the children's farm), you’ll find real farm ambience at children’s level. Let the youngsters burn off some energy on one of the many play tractors and give them the experience of the day among more than 20 tame guinea pigs. Remember to bring a lunch basket!
Are the good-natured trolls peeping out between the trees? And can you also hear the witch's hoarse laughter? We all love a good tale, and in Eventyrskoven (the fairytale forest), you are part of one. Watch the magic appear before you as you scan the QR codes along the way.
A great tip
Crab fishing at the harbour is a huge hit amongst the little ones and, in several places, they have made something of it with e.g., a racetrack, a collection pool and life jackets. In The Coastal Land, you are always near a harbour.

Magnificent miniature golf courses
For the competitive and playful we recommend a classic game of miniature golf!
These are the best (mini)courses in The Coastal Land.
Horsens City Camping
Golfing in the dark ages - well, why not? This popular miniature golf course has both fjord, beach, and the city of Horsens as its closest neighbors, and it is creatively built as a medieval-themed adventure. In the centre, you'll find a knight’s castle, and if you are not careful, you might end up in the witch’s boiling pot or in the pillory. Celebrate the winner of the match with a delicious ice-cream from the superb ice-cream bar.
Juelsminde Minigolf
Not far from the centre of Juelsminde you’ll find this beautiful oasis for games. The course lies in a green, park-like environment, surrounded by trees and shrubs. Here, there is the sound of birds chirping, the golf club hitting the ball and happy people creating a unique atmosphere. The 18-hole course is suited for both beginners and the more experienced.
The Beach Shop at Saksild Beach
Compete with your family at the adventure miniature golf course just 100 metres from the beach Saksild Strand. An obvious activity for the beach trip if you want it to be just a little more fun. With 12 holes of varying difficulty levels, this is the perfect family battle.
Kuglen & Keglen event centre
At the combined event centre and bowling alley Kuglen & Keglen in Odder, you can be a true ’club-slinger’ at the Wild West themed course with 9 easy holes and 9 more challenging. Your children can even do a ’Kids Round’, or the whole family can hit the grand 18-hole course.
Endelave Grill & Café
Straight off the ferry, you’ll find this café. Next to the café there is a 9-hole course where you can compete for honor and glory against your loved ones. The whole family can participate, or the children can have fun while you enjoy a quiet time.
CampOne Ajstrup Strand
At the camp site CampOne Ajstrup Strand at Ajstrup Beach you can combine a day at the beach with a game of miniature golf. Vamos a la playa!

4 playgrounds …with endless hours of fun
Toddlers, kids, or playful adults? In The Coastal Land you’ll find a lot of fantastic playgrounds to enjoy with the whole family. Here are some of the best playgrounds in the area.
The Industrial Museum's playground
At the Industrial Museum in Horsens
Inspired by the long industrial history of Horsens, this modern playground invites you to play in beautifully designed playground equipment. The big play tower is shaped as a gas tank – right here on the ground that once housed a gas factory. The tower is big enough to be explored from the inside, and from the top, at an altitude of seven metres, you can ride the long slide down. You’ll also find a steam engine, a seesaw shaped as the local Nimbus motorcycle as well as swings and an obstacle course.
The Great Escape
At The Prison Museum in Horsens
In the green areas outside of the old prison’s walls, children can play in a miniature edition of The Prison called “The Great Escape”. With hidden escape systems, jungle net, climbing wall and a swing set, this place has plenty of challenges for small adventurers. Combine your stay at the playground with a walk around the prison’s grounds, and maybe grab yourself a treat at the café Brasseriet FÆNGSLET.
Juelsminde Nature Playpark
With a view over the small coastal town
In the scenic settings around Odelsbjerget near Juelsminde town centre, you’ll find a paradise for children and childish grownups. A plethora of playground equipment, facilities, tracks and challenges awaits. The varied activities mean that the children can play for hours while you relax, perhaps with a cup of coffee from the kiosk or a game of padel tennis at the playpark’s courts.
The
playground Mølleparken
Odder’s green activity area
The playground Mølleparken by Andedammen (the duck pond) near Odder Museum offers both a green area and great playing facilities, such as swings, a climbing tower, a seesaw, a playhouse and tables and benches. Enjoy a picnic by the nearby creek, Odder Å, or spoil yourself with some coffee and cake from the museum’s café. Pure idyl!

If it rains
Yes, we do know that it happens. The showers in Denmark are the very reason that everything is so lovely and green. Luckily, we also have experiences here that are indifferent to weather conditions.
At the event centre Kuglen & Keglen in Odder, you can immerse yourself in an array of friendly family competition on the bowling alley, the pool table or on the air hockey table. The menu is (of course) child-friendly, and if the weather clears up, there is fun to be had outside as well - with a bouncy castle, a giant mini golf course and much more. In Odder you will also find one of the country's cosiest cinemas and the padel tennis center Padel1.
Unfold your inner game master at the Board Game Café (Brætspilscaféen) in Horsens. Here you can choose from almost 500 games - everything from yatzy to Dungeons and Dragons. Another perfect getaway on a rainy day in Horsens is Kulturstationen (the culture station), which offers new activities and creative pursuits every weekend.
3 tips for water lovers
The weather is always perfect for swimming in the three public pools Vandhalla in Hou, Spektrum Odder Svømmehal, and Aqua Forum in Horsens which all have both water slides and hot water pools.
At Horsens Municipality's Libraries, you can surf books, newspapers, and web, in all kinds of weather. Keep an eye on the calendar on kystlandet.com, because especially during holidays, the library is filled with creative workshops, activities and talks for children and adults. Perfect for a day indoors.
There is hours of fun, games, and full speed ahead when you visit Horsens Legeland (playland). Do your kids love climbing, trampolines, slides, ball cannons, slot machines or treasure hunts? The playground is a pure Eldorado of colours and fun play areas. Barrit Legeunivers (an indoor playground in Barrit) between Horsens and Juelsminde has a playroom, a sensory room and sports hall - and free admission! Go knock yourselves out.

Would you like to put your life into perspective? Visit The Prison (“Fængslet”) and experience the illuminating history and events that played out here.
As soon as you get behind the thick prison walls, you are enthralled with the stories and adventures of this special place. With an award-winning museum, concerts, festivals and the opportunity for accommodation in old prison cells, The Prison has so much to offer.
Enter an unknown world, now full of life, history and authentic personal tales.
The museum has won several awards for its exciting exhibitions, which give you a different and thoughtprovoking experience. Here you get an extraordinary opportunity to get behind bars and meet former
inmates as shadows on the walls or follow an employee through the museum via interactive ID-cards or follow in the footsteps of the great escape artist Carl Lorentzen through an 18-meter-long tunnel. But don’t worry. The Prison will not lock you up. Contrary to Lorentzen, you are free to leave again.
The activity "The Hidden Stamp" has in record time become a big favorite among the youngest guests! As a newly arrived prisoner, you and your family will be handed a notebook from a previous prisoner with several tasks that you must solve in order to gain access to the hidden stamp that gets you out into freedom. With the help of Morse code, pattern
recognition and much more, you must find a way out for yourself through the museum - and thus escape a life in prison.
Vestsalen (the west wing) is the crowning achievement of The Prison's transformation.
In 2021, Vestsalen openeda new spectacular culture, event and conference hall, which opens up for experiences in a league of its own. The unique architecture merges with raw prison aesthetics and creates an extraordinary setting. With Vestsalen, The Prison's vision of opening up a previously closed world has come full circle.
Listen to this Lorentzen spent 11 months digging a tunnel out of the prison.
Events in 2023
The Prison is not just an award winning museum! Did you know that there are conferences and events inside and outside of the building almost every week?
This year, some of the biggest events include; Horsens Medieval Festival, International Convention for Crime Fiction, Beers Behind Bars, Prison Ink tattoo convention, JAILBREAK metal festival, as well as Habengut Second Hand Market, Halloween, and Christmas at The Prison. Find them and more in the calendar at kystlandet.com or faengslet.dk/en.

The Coastal Land is abundant in culture and history, so wherever you are going, you’ll find exciting stories to delve in. Here we've collected four museums, that really bring history to life - each and every one is a memorable experience for the whole family.
Glud Museum
Would you like to know how life in the Danish countryside has been during the last 350 years? At Glud Museum you can enter Denmark’s oldest farmhouse, participate in fun family activities, experience workshops with volunteers working as blacksmiths, wood workers and weavers - or go see the the big show hall with farm tools, carriages, and crafts.
Odder Museum
Odder Museum is situated right in the heart of Odder in a lovely green area close to the high street. When you visit the museum, you can explore the old mill that it is still fully functioning despite it being closed for 65 years. The museum is also known for its comprehensive program of activities and events, which often take place outside of the buildings of the museum.
Horsens Museum
Learn more about Horsens' history at Horsens Museum. See the exhibition on the local explorer Vitus Bering. Study the archeological artefacts and skeletons - or find out more about Horsens’ developments through time. Our favourite thing is perhaps joining one of the historical city walks taking place throughout the year.
Uldum Mølle Museum
In the village of Uldum you’ll find a beautiful Dutch mill, standing tall as an idyllic local landmark. See the three grinder mills where the production takes place and walk onto the gallery and see the 23-metre-long wings up close – and remember to buy some of the products in the mill’s shop. Inside the beautifully preserved mill you can also experience a historical exhibition about the nearby marshlands Uldum Kær where Denmark’s only river Gudenå passes through.
Hjortsvang Museum
the 18th-20th century is celebrated and commemorated. This picturesque museum is located in the countryside near the river Gudenå. Experience authentic Danish craftsmanship, listen to the olden stories from the guides, or go explore the charming half-timbered houses.
Glud Museum Horsens Museum Odder MuseumThe machines that revolutionised Denmark
There is plenty of opportunity for exploring history in a way that lets even the youngest family members take home an amazing experience. Learn a lot of new ‘fun facts’ about tractor history, agricultural history and industrial history on a tour of large and small museums with a lot of heart.
The old Ferguson splutters slightly but, otherwise, it starts without problems. The humming sound of the engine fills the air with nostalgia. There is something special about a Ferguson. On the farm Ankerslund, one tractor was not enough which means that, today, there is a line of 250 tractors in what is now called Denmark’s Ferguson Museum.
In fact, this is where you can experience the world's largest collection of Ferguson tractors. When the machines made their entry into Danish agriculture in 1917, they were revolutionary and, until the mid1970s, almost every farmer had a Ferguson parked in the barn. At Denmark’s Ferguson Museum, you can follow the development, from the first models launched to the end of their heyday, which gives you a very special insight into agricultural history.
Just as tractors revolutionised agriculture so, too, did the rest of society undergo a revolution with the advent of industrialisation. You can learn about this in the most entertaining way at the Industrial Museum in Horsens.
Start by experiencing the old steam engines and internal combustion engines at full blast. When the tour guide starts the big machines, it is difficult to remain disinterested.
Continue the journey through the workers' housing, where you will learn what industrialisation meant to the common people. Here, both the sense of sight and taste come into play when you experience how people lived, ate, and lived together at different times in Danish history.
Denmark's Ferguson Museum The Industrial MuseumGlud Museum
Explore the idyllic village between Horsens and Juelsminde.
From the simple conditions of the farm worker to the elegant living rooms of the wealthy families. At the open-air museum in Glud you can experience the contrast between high and low at the countryside during the last three centuries. Here, the whole family can spend a day devoted to history, enjoy something sweet from the museum café and explore the beautiful gardens.

of history
Denmark's historical heritage is evident from our buildings, nature, sculptures, and the landscape. Go on an excursion to some of the most distinctive buildings along the coast, all of which were built on history.
Today, most mansions and castles are privately owned and not accessible to the public. But that does not stop us from looking at them, taking walks in the gardens where this is permitted - and immersing ourselves in the many stories that are just waiting to be heard.
By way of example, did you know that the fine lady of 18th-century Aakær Mansion wanted not merely to be buried in a silk dress and neat silk stockings, but also insisted on the stockings being replaced every year for Christmas?
Or that the noblewoman Kirsten Munk, who gave birth to 12 children during her marriage with King Christian IV
were kept in detention at Boller Castle from 1630 until her death in 1658? The king accused her of adultery, treason and attempts at poisoning and bewitching him – and banished her from the court.
This list of historic buildings in The Coastal Land is far from full.
In fact, it is only a small sample of the treasures hidden in the landscape. Find many more historic buildings and fabulous tales in our online universe.

The “Rabbit Island” Endelave
Venture into the recreational summer activities on Endelave, meet wild rabbits and follow the beautiful hiking trail “The Kanino”.
Endelave is one of Denmark’s most beautiful natural islands and contains a unique variety of plants and habitats, a miniature salt marsh with a rich bird and animal life, as well as family-friendly outdoor experiences. And, not least, lots of wild rabbits that have given the island the nickname "Rabbit Island".
Follow the hiking trail “The Kanino” 21 kilometres around the island or let Turridning Endelave show you the island on horseback. You can also rent a bike, go on a tractor ride, or go for a walk with Birgit from Writers Walk.
Put on the very high waders and go on a seaweed safari on Endelave, where you learn to harvest seaweed right there in the ocean. You can also buy products to take home from the seaweed shop - it is packed with vitamins, and it even tastes fantastic. In The Medicinal Herb Garden, you can enjoy a lunch and explore the garden of organic herbs, plants and flowers. The eateries gather in Endelave Town, close to the ferry berth.
Endelave is located south of Horsens Fjord and can be reached with the Endelave ferry from the harbour
town Snaptun. The crossing takes an hour, and, along the way, you can enjoy the view of Møllegrunden with its many seals and maybe be lucky enough to spot porpoises.
There are also really good conditions for yachtsmen on the island, so feel free to bring the sailboat and dock in the harbor. Ohoy sailor!
Active & peaceful
During the summer, you can participate in an abundance of activities on Endelave - for free. The association called Endelave Aktiv Ø makes sure you get your heart rate up with activities such as crossfit, running, hiking, and martial arts. They also help you find inner peace through yoga and relaxation of the muscles.

On the car-free island, there is a long tradition of transporting tourists and visitors around the island on the back of a tractor. They call it a traxi!
On Tunø you’ll find space and time to truly unwind. The unspoiled and beautiful nature calls for presence and quality time. Enjoy cooled white wine and smoked fish at the harbour and delicious vegetable stands by the roadside. That is true island idyl. You can also walk the entire coastline in just three hours.
In the heart of the village, you’ll find the charming little Tunø Church with a unique 18-meter combined church tower and lighthouse. From the top of the tower, you have an amazing panoramic view of the island, and on clear days you can see all the way to the Great Belt (Storebælt) Bridge. You can also enjoy beautiful views on the tall cliffs on the north side of the island and the bird tower on “the mountain”.
Tunø is bustling with life and activity during summer. In the vegetable road stands you can buy fresh potatoes, carrots and crispy green asparagus. The eateries at the harbour and in the village are open late. Only a few steps from the marina, you’ll find the cosy village centre with the local grocer’s and the beach hotel Mejeriet Tunø. Also, make sure you don’t miss out on the restaurant Tunø Smokehouse at the marina, known for its delicious smoked salts and lavish fish dishes.
How can you make children get up early and go for a long walk? You send them on a scavenger hunt around the island of Tunø! All scavenger hunters can get a free treasure map aboard the ferry. While hiking the 8.3 km walk around the island you must solve a few tasks. When you reach the finish line at the merchant’s house (Tunø Købmandsgård), all hunters will receive a medal.

Island of the Vikings: Welcome to Hjarnø
Even though the Island of Hjarnø is located just 500 meters from the mainland, the island ambience is real. As soon as you get to the little ferry quay, time stops, and whispers of ancient history emerges and fuses with the sea breeze.
Tour de harbour
The East Jutland Archipelago encompasses nine yachting harbours with great eateries and loads of maritime charm.
You can access the island via the Hjarnø ferry which sails the 5-minute trip 30 times a day. Visit Hjarnø as a part of your island hopping in Horsens Fjord, or stay a little longer and breathe in all the authentic island charm.
Through the times, many have fallen in love with quiet nature and island tranquility on Hjarnø. The best way to explore the island is by foot, on your bike, or on a sightseeingtractor-tour.
On the island’s southern coast, you’ll find the “Viking Ships”, a stone row probably from the Viking Age. King Hjarne, who the island is named after, is said to have been laid to rest here!
The church on Hjarnø is the second smallest in Denmark, and the votive ship hanging under the vault is a model of a Viking ship.
Join a guided tour Hjarnø ChurchFollow the embankment to the beautiful Alrø and get pampered at Møllegården with a lovely gastronomic experience in our rustic, atmospheric, and thoroughly cleaned ”pig house”. We have a lovely roofed terrace with bay view,, where you can enjoy your food in the open air.

NEW IN THE SEASON 2023 MØLLEGÅRDENS GRAVY BURGER
A gravy burger with crispy pork and all the fixings. Additionally, we serve traditional dishes like Møllegården’s shooting star with a fried and a steamed fish fillet, a lunch platter with 4 different treats and much more.
We are open both for lunch and dinner. We hope to see you!
Idyllic Alrø
A small, idyllic island with half-timbered houses, great eateries, and giant Danish patty shells.
A bite of bison
Or at least a bison burger or bison tapas! At Alrø Købmandsgaard the meat is from the bison farm right here on the island. And specialities are made in their own smokehouse.
There is a special kind of atmosphere on Alrø. The winding road, the scattered half-timbered houses, and the beautiful nature with the everpresent coastline. Danish author, Morten Korch, did in fact live and work on Alrø for several periods, where he let himself be inspired by the surroundings on the island. The farms such as Bakkegården and Møllegården can be recognised in his writings.
The island is home to some very nice eateries. Visit Møllegården where the restaurant is set up in the former stables of a pig farm. And at Café Alrø, you can try to beat the record in giant patty shell eating. You sense the closeness to the sea and nature everywhere, and many windsurfers, kitesurfers, kayakers, anglers and yachtsmen use the waters around Alrø.
In the southern end of the island, you’ll find the old steamboat pier, which is a popular excursion spot all year round. This is also the place where the small bicycle-ferry crosses the inlet of Horsens Fjord and connects Alrø with Hjarnø during summer.
Eat very well in the transformed stables of a pig farmExplore nature
Would you like to get in touch with nature? You’ll find a wide range of stunning nature experiences to explore in The Coastal Land.

7 scenic (sort of) summits
Grab your camera and cross off these natural gems, one by one.
Magnificent views from one of Denmark’s “mountains”
Sukkertoppen: Forget about Denmark being flat as a pancake. One of Denmark's mountains is found in The Coastal Land with steep heathered sides and the trip to the top being one of Denmark’s more challenging climbs. The hike is about 4 km and the views of Mossø and the river Gudenå are fantastic. If you list a top-10 of overlooked Danish natural gems, there is no getting around Sukkertoppen.
Such a handsome lighthouse, it should have its own Instagram account
Træskohage Lighthouse from 1904 is an iconic landmark of the area around Stouby and Vejlefjord. The 13-metre-tall lighthouse has been restored and, today, is an excellent observation tower with fantastic views of the fjord. On a clear day you can actually see all the way to Funen! It is also a popular motif for nature photographers and Instagram enthusiasts.
Unique cultural landscape by the river Gudenå
The marshland Uldum Kær is a protected nature reserve with a rare flora and fauna. A welldesigned network of trails lets you experience the large bog and marsh area up close. Start at the bird tower and soak up the views.
The best view of Horsens Fjord
The deep forests of Sondrup are located in a hilly landscape on an elongated hillside that was formed during the last ice age - an unusually beautiful and varied area just north of Alrø. Both Sondrup Bakker and Uldrup Bakker are amongst the favourite destinations of the locals. Being 74 metres above the fjord, Blakshøj is the highest point – however, the best views are enjoyed from the hills of Trustrup.
Nature and ancient monuments at Vejle Fjord
In the hilly Staksrode Forest, you'll find one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in Denmark with high slopes, fallen trees, untouched and rare nature. There are four signposted routes, each with its own colour code. We recommend the beautiful yellow route which'll take you you past a real castle ruin and sea scapes that take your breath away.
900 years of cultural heritage
The monastery mill Klostermølle is located where the river Gudenå feeds into Mossø, Jutland's largest lake, and is thus perfectly visited in combination with taking a trip to Sukkertoppen (the sugar loaf). The mill was built by Benedictine monks in the 12th century and has subsequently been used as a paper mill. Enjoy the amazing views from the bird tower at the northern end of the curing barn.
Feel the wind in your hair at the highest point in Denmark
Do you want to brag about having climbed Denmark's highest mountain? Then you need to tick off Yding Skovhøj as, at a vertical rise of 172.54 metres, it is taller than all other Danish peaks. That is, if you count the small Bronze Age mound at the top. At the top, you can enjoy the finest views of the the river Gudenå to the west while the wind ruffles your hair, just like on a real mountain peak.

The Uncovered Bridge
Can you imagine? For 85 years, the old railway bridge lay buried, forgotten by many. But now it has been dug out and restored, so everyone can enjoy the beautiful craftmanship of the engineers.
The Uncovered Bridge is located in an area of great scenic beauty north-west of Horsens and is visited by more than 100.000 guests each year. It was originally built as a part of the railway between Bryrup and Horsens in 1899, and at the time of the opening it was the tallest bridge in the Nordic countries. Today, you can ride your bike across the bridge on The Nature Trail Horsens-Silkeborg. You should also go for a walk in the beautiful nature and enjoy your packed lunch at the riverbank.
Hidden in a dam
The old railway track was covered within a dam in 1924. It was uncovered in 2014 when they removed the dam to create a greater water flow in the river Gudenå and thereby create a better passage for fish and animals.
Learn why The Uncovered Bridge was covered up and uncovered again.
Step onto the vintage railway
The railway from Horsens to Silkeborg was referred to as “Denmark’s most beautiful railway” back when it was still active. Go for a ride back in time in one of the old vintage trains with The Vintage Railway Bryrup-Vrads and enjoy your lunch in one of the charming railway carriages or in the restaurant in the renovated station building.

CANOEING THE RIVER GUDENÅ
SEASON
May 1st 2023
Come and experience our farm shop
In the small village Dørup by Mossø lake close to Skanderborg, you find FARM SHOP SOFI. Come in and experience the farm shop which is truly worth a visit. When you enter the cosy shop you will find the old mixed with the new. The old tables, cupboards, bookcases and wooden apple boxes have been decorated with jewellery, table cloths, clothes, wine, towels, candles, glasses, cups, bowls, baskets - in short: everything you would want from a real farm shop.
Canoeing along the most beautiful stretch of the river Gudenå
In Tinnet Krat, a small spring trickles out of the ground. This is the start of Denmark's only river and longest stream - Gudenå. It stretches approximately 160 km through the landscape, all the way to its estuary in Randers Fjord. But the most beautiful stretch is found between Tørring and the monastery mill, Klostermølle.
The whole family huddles up – literally – in a canoe. That’s why, it is a completely unique way to be together as a family when the slim boat is pushed from shore and gently rocks along the river Gudenå.
Why visit the Amazon rainforest when you can visit Gudenå in Denmark?
The southern stretch of the river Gudenå is breath-taking with narrow, winding stretches and no larger lakes. The journey will take you through Uldum Kær, a protected bog with abundant nature. You get close to The Uncovered Bridge, the beautiful old hydroplant Vestbirk Vandkraftværk and end up at the cosy monastery mill, Klostermølle with a view of Mossø at the foot of the hill Sukkertoppen - one of the hidden treasures of The Coastal Land. The whole trip is 40 km and can be completed in two to three days at a leisurely pace.
Part of the stretch towards Klostermølle takes you through forests and is almost jungle-like which has earned it the nickname "Denmark's Amazons". 800 years ago, the monks of the monastery dug the canal to utilise the hydropower for their mill.
From Tørring to Klostermølle you are only permitted to sail in one direction and only using non-motorised vessels. This makes canoeing along this route especially wonderful if you are a beginner or have children on board. At the canoe rental place Tørring Kanoudlejning, it is possible to arrange pick-up at your end-destination and transport back to your car. During the summer, you can also catch the upstream bus.

Brædstrup …the beacon of Bakkelandet
Located among the highest peaks in Denmark, Brædstrup offers both delicious food, several nice shops and an historic railway path.
Brædstrup’s main square has recently undergone urban renewal, with special emphasis to the old railway Bryrupbanen, that runs through town. A recreational area with swings, outdoor seating and lots of trees now comprise the town-center, which is already known for its proximity to nature – with The Uncovered Bridge only 10 km away. Step onto the historic railway, which today is one of Denmark’s most beautiful hiking- and biking trails, and feel yourself taken aback, to a time when steam trains were the crown jewel of industrialisation.
Small town – great shopping!
At Fru Skov, you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee while you look for delicious tea, spices, oils, and other specialities or new gourmet utensils. At Water of Life/Vin & Vin, you’ll find exclusive brands of whiskey, gin, rum, port or champagne, and even attend different tastings.

Restaurant Det Gamle Posthus (the old post office)Vejle Fjord
The northern shores of Vejle Fjord are characterised by beautiful nature and a dramatic coastline. In just one day, you can visit beaches, forests, fossils, castle ruins and a photogenic lighthouse.
Start the day by being blown backwards by the most impressive views. From the characteristic high slopes of Staksrode Forest, you can see all the way to the islands of Æbelø and Funen. Looking the other way into the wild and untamed forest is just as fascinating. But do not worry, there are marked hiking routes of between 2.5 and 5 km which means that you can calmly venture into the wilderness and go hunting for the ruin of the robber’s fortress Stagsevold.
At the foot of the slopes of the forest, you can continue the hunt on Stenhøj Beach - look for fossils and playful porpoises which you can spot along the coast.
Make sure to stop by the shop Det Kreative Gartneri in the village Stouby. Here, flowers, art, delicacies, vintage furniture, and locally grown vegetables are waiting for you.
Further west, you’ll find the beautiful spa hotel Vejlefjord and its beautiful park as well as many historic paths in the park, which were used for promenading in the old days. These take you past the iconic Træ skohage Lighthouse, which offers a fantastic view of the fjord and is a favourite motif of nature photographers as well as Instagram enthusiasts.
Did you know?
…that Vejle Fjord was formed during the largest ice sheet advance of the most recent ice age? The northern coastline of the fjord is characterised by steep slopes where sudden landslides can occur, causing trees to fall onto the beach. Fortunately, developments are closely monitored which means that you can move safely on the shore.
Ahoy!
Did you know that Staksrode Forest is home to the ruins of a robber's fortress? According According to legend, that is. Follow the yellow route and cross the moat via the small wooden bridge to get to the ruin of the medieval castle, Stagsevold.

The link at Odder Golf Club is hilly, compact, and easily accessible –regardless of age and experience. All equipment can be rented, and afterwards we recommend you spoil yourself with a burger-menu at the club’s restaurant.
Stensballegaard Golf is beautifully situated near Horsens Fjord, in the outer skirts of the small town Stensballe. The high-quality complex is regarded as one of the best in Denmark – and we promise that you’ll never forget the panoramic view of The Coastal Land when swinging your club, at the top of “Stensballe Mountain”.
Horsens Golf Club is known for the 18-hole golf course in the beautifully hilly landscape with many visible lakes and ponds. The club has Denmark’s only par-3 rated course: a 9-hole course, just waiting to challenge you!
In scenic surroundings near forest and beach, you’ll find Juelsminde Golf club overlooking the deep blue sea of Kattegat. A really nice golf club, favored by perfect surroundings for a beautiful day in varied terrain and very close to the harbour town Juelsminde.
If you are not an experienced golfer, you can test your talent at the pay & play courses.Equipment can be rented, and afterwards we recommend a lunch at the club restaurants.

Kitesurfing at Borre Knob Horsens MarinaActive at sea
Welcome to a perfect area for water sports! The entire coastline is perfectly suited for kayaking and stand-up paddling, while conditions at Alrø and Borre Knob are ideal for kite- and windsurfing.
Water sports have never been this popular. And with good reason! What better way to explore nature than from the water while also activating your stiff muscles?
Stand-up paddling has become particularly popular in Danish harbours and beach environments. It is truly a balancing act. But once you catch on, you are blessed with good views.
Everyone can participate, you actively use your body and experience nature. Stand-up paddling is mentally relaxing.
Our many beaches attract sun-hungry bathers. But seeing kayaks slide past you, out at sea, is quite common. The area is home to several rowing and kayaking clubs as well as rental places.
Fishing for pure freedom
266 km of coastline means an abundance of opportunities for coastal fishing. Add to that the many lakes and streamsand The Coastal Land reveals itself as a pure fishing paradise.
The coast around the Juelsminde peninsula is varied and, therefore, contains plenty of good fishing spots for every level of experience. You can fish using spinner or fly and you can fish from either the shore or from a boat. Trout, in particular, are fond of the waters here and it is also possible to hook garfish, flatfish and cod.
The area is known for its excellent trout fishing which peaks in periods
April - June and September - October.
Vejle Fjord and Horsens Fjord are beautiful places to fish. The area near the pier at the tip of
Alrø is particularly popular with local fishermen who wade to the fairway. This also applies to the tip of Borre Knob just across the fjord. Be aware, however, that, in both areas, the water suddenly becomes very deep.
There is free fishing along the Danish coasts - that is, you do not need to buy a separate fishing permit to fish here.
You find particularly peaceful fishing in the many local lakes and streams but check the rules before you cast your line.
A great place to try your hand at fishing for the first time is the local fishing parks called "put & takes" - and you will find two of the country's best right here in The Coastal Land. Both at Fyelmose- and Hedensted Put & Take there are excellent facilities - and the fishing opportunities are top notch! Among other things, there are children's lakes in both places, where the youngest have extra good odds of getting something on the hook.
If you do not have your own equipment, it is easy to rent it in Fyelmose's shop, Fyel-Shop. At put & takes, there is room for everyone - both the experienced and beginners.
A great tip
If you need good advice on how to coast fish, we recommend a visit to Effektlageret in Horsens, which also offers a large selection of fishing gear.
Fishing permit
In streams and lakes, you often must buy a direct permit to fish. You can find it online at fisketegn.dk or at the local fishing union.
Art, culture and events
Engaging experiences that get under your skin.
The Coastal Land has a wide selection of exciting contemporary art, appealing galleries and skilled artisans who are ready to provide you with new inspiration and experiences. There are also still plenty of events that you can feel deep in your soul.
Galleries & open workshops
Forget about fridge magnets and postcards! Explore our many inspiring galleries and open workshops and find lovely souvenirs, created from natural materials by some of the area's most talented artists and artisans.
In The Coastal Land, there has always been a proud tradition of art, strongly inspired by the nature in the area.
The deep green landscape of Sondrup Hills, between Odder and Horsens, housed i.a. the Danish artist Mogens Ziegler, who found the inspiration for his works in these woods.
In Horsens, just a few hundred meters from the building where artist Michael Kvium started his career as a satirist, is Gallery Hjorth, which with its raw, urban, and carefully selected catalog, perfectly embraces the spirit of the former industrial city, where rough surroundings reveal a lot of beauty. Just outside the city center is the 1,700 m2 gallery ART’M, which presents a large selection of both modern art and sculptures in many styles.
The quiet trickle of the river Gudenå through the hilly countryside (Bakkelandet) also attracts many creative artists. In Voervadsbro, by the protected part of the river, you can get your hands in the clay at MolaMola Workshop.
For a real bohemian experience, visit the artists along our coastlines. Be inspired by the colorful works at Galleri Mynster on Alrø, enjoy a creative coffee break at Det Grafiske Magasin on Hjarnø, and do not miss multi-artist Marie Würtz's ceramic creations at Pottemageren in the harbour town of Juelsminde.
No matter where and when you find yourself in The Coastal Land, you can have memorable art experiences along the way. We have many more small, cosy, and special galleries and local artists, which you can read more about at kystlandet.com.
Horsens Art Museum
If you want to let art under your skin, a visit to this impressive art museum is an absolute must.
Largest and most well-known on the Horsens art scene is the Horsens Art Museum which, for more than 100 years, has let the public enjoy an impressive, rich and varied selection of modern Danish art in an atmospheric building with a fantastic inflow of light.
Beautifully located in the city park of Caroline Amalie Lund, the brilliantly white museum sits atop the hill of the park with its simple design and "white cube" architecture which easily matches international standards.
Today, an entire room is dedicated to the works of the local-born painter Michael Kvium, who has a whole wing dedicated to his work. The large collection is continually rotated, so that you always have a new experience when visiting
the museum. Kvium has attained global recognition with his distinctive, engaging, and characteristic style, as well as much debate.
Some of the museum’s permanent collections include Erik A. Frandsen, Christian Lemmerz, Nina StenKnudsen, Cathrine Raben Davidsen, Frederik Næblerød and Klara Lilja. Some of the museum’s permanent collections include Erik A. Frandsen, Christian Lemmerz, Nina Sten-Knudsen, Cathrine Raben Davidsen, Frederik Næblerød and Klara Lilja. In 2023, experience the exciting new exhibitions by contemporary artist Silas Inoue, and the American artist Nick Theobald in dialogue with the now deceased Emil Westman Hertz.
Also, pop into the museum shop which has an exciting selection of
clothes, books, posters, games, crafts, and other fine items that are perfect as a holiday souvenir.
Café focusing on sustainability
In the museum café, Café Ella, you find the Gravy Burger of the Year 2022. It is an attraction in itself! If you are into the slightly lighter dishes, they are naturally also on the menu. In addition, you can enjoy the views of the beautiful chestnut trees of the Caroline Amalie Lund as well as several of the permanent art installations and sculptures in the museum park.

The local pride - the football club AC Horsens – play and practice at Nordstern Arena in Horsens. A beautiful stadium where everyone is welcome. The atmosphere in the bleachers is top notch, and we highly recommend appearing on a matchday and to experience the feeling for yourself.
One of the most effective ways to getting to really know a new place you visit? Go visit the stadium when the local football team plays! This also applies when you are a guest in The Coastal Land, where the matches with AC Horsens at the city's stadium form the nerve in the local sports spirit.
As a spectator, you will experience atmosphere, entertainment, excitement, and togetherness. And you really get this authentic local experience where the values and culture of the area shine through.
AC Horsens was founded over 25 years ago, in 1994, as a collaboration between FC Horsens and Horsens Forenede Sportsklubber. The team answers the
nickname “De Gule” or “The Yellow”, and you may recognise the players by their yellow and black uniform colours. The club values are unity, humility, and hard work. This is also reflected in the attitude of the players, the stadium, and the fans.
In AC Horsens there are no posh feelings. Here the players are aware that results do not come by themselves, but only through hard work on the training ground as well as in the stadium. A sense of community and the will to win has taken the club a long way - and these are values that are shared with the local community.
Nothing beats a nice day in the stands. Apart from the favourite team winning!
Do you know that feeling?
...of just needing a cold one after a great game? In Horsens, you will neither go thirsty nor get bored. You will find night clubs, bars, pubs, bodegas and cafés – cosy, funny, quirky and fantastic.
Cosy urban spaces and shopping
Yes, of course, nature is lovely. But have you taken in the atmosphere in our cities?
There is nothing nicer than strolling through the city, going window-shopping, taking in local living and feeling the buzz of the smaller streets.
The energy of a big city - charm of a small town
Oh, Horsens! The former industrial- and prison city with the qualities of a big city without actually being big. Free from over crowding, the bustle and the stress. Rich in art, entrepreneurship, soul, gastronomy, music, green oases, and cultural life. A charming city rooted in its history. And entirely one of a kind.
Horsens has managed to utilise its past as a prison and industrial city to its advantage and, today, it offers relevant and authentic experiences to everyone who come s to visit.
Beautiful and challenging street art peeps out of the nooks and crannies of the city.
The newly renovated city centre invites activity and life in the streets. There is room to settle down and take in the life of the city. There are super-cosy restaurants and sidewalk cafés - both in the wide pedestrianised high street and the intimate side alleys which are steeped in atmosphere.
A simple walk through Horsens quickly turns into an exploration of art when the cityscape suddenly shows off colourful and surprising details. The beautiful murals in the city are found everywhere - at Horsens Art Museum, you can get a free guide to sculptures and street art which you can take with you when exploring the street art.
Horsens also attracts the energetic, outdoorsy types who like to add a little greenery to their cobblestones. The town beach of Langelinie is a good spot for a refreshing stroll, some playtime or settling down whereas the historic Bygholm Park right at the city centre is the favourite destination of many locals.

Denmark’s cosiest harbour town
While the boats rock gently in the water, the quay is full of life and the happy atmosphere of the sound of children's laughter mingling with the diners’ clinking cutlery. The Juelsminde marina is the beating heart of the town and a holiday dream served on a silver platter.
With its irresistible harbour environment, top-notch beaches, plenty of playgrounds, restaurants, and cafés as well as its busy shopping area, Juelsminde has everything to be desired by your and your family's holiday heart.
The town is jam-packed with harbour charm as you know it from the coastal towns of southern Europe but without the cheeky waiters.
Here, ocean view is not something for which you pay extra but simply present everywhere you look. At the harbour, you'll find attractive restaurants with freshfrom-the-sea fish dishes, ice cream for those with a sweet tooth, as well as a harbour museum, a playground, and a crab racing track.
Adjacent to the harbour, you find one of Denmark's best and most family-friendly beaches, two miniature golf courses and several playgrounds. The large Juelsminde Nature Playpark is especially popular amongst children and the young at heart.
Perfectly located between Horsens Fjord and Vejle Fjord, Juelsminde is a popular destination for sailorsand everyone else who has a penchant for salt water. In the charming harbour town everything is within walking distance. Just a few metres from the water's edge you can shop in the cosy shops or head into the backyard of the town, Tofteskoven, either on foot or mountain bike.

When Juelsminde prides itself on being for the whole family, it is of course also for mum and dad. The cosy streets of Juelsminde have several specialty shops for the discerning buyer with everything from fashion, beach gear, home decor to unique handmade products.
Only a few places in Denmark do you get a shopping experience like that of Juelsminde. The shops are so close to the harbour that you can almost hear the crashing waves while you shop. It is so very cosy! Afterwards, take a stroll to the beach, catch crabs with the kids, enjoy an ice cream at the marina or have lunch while looking at maritime life.
Sjørs and Titra Dekor has delicacies, arts and crafts and fashion whereas Lykke & Lykke carries everything from clothes and shoes to beautiful jewellery. You’ll find beautiful ceramics at Pottemageren where you (or your children) can even have a nice mug made with your name on it to forever remind you of the trip. You can also find a book or a board game at Buchs Bookshop.
From the harbour to the large, new nature playground, you can take a stroll past the town pond, the Swan Lake. Pure idyll for young and old.

With free parking in the shopping street, it doesn't get any easier!
Sjørs Lykke og LykkeCharming harbour towns
We have many beautiful harbours. Juelsminde is one of them and there are also all the lovely island harbours. And then, we have all the others, each with their own, distinct attraction. Read along and learn a bit about each of them!
The large and small sailing ships gently rock in the water. Sailors and visitors to the harbour stroll along at a leisurely pace. Some take care of a few chores, others eat an ice cream, and it all contributes to creating a cosy, maritime atmosphere in which it is great to sit back.
Horsens
We love Horsens Marina for its liveliness and closeness to the city. It has kept its original quality with charming wooden sheds from the old fishing environment. For families with young children, there’s a large playing area, a jetty for crab fishing and even a cable ferry. Enjoy a nice meal and a glass of chilled wine at Pynten with eminent views of the marina.
Hou
You might have heard of Hou as the ferry harbour with connections to the islands of Tunø and Samsø. But Hou is so much more than that. The marina offers classic, Danish maritime atmosphere, while staying in touch with the unspoiled, old ferry port. Visit Hou and take a seat with a cold brew in the summer or hot cup of chocolate in the winter. The marina is located close to the town Odder, as well as to some of the best beaches of the area.
Norsminde
The cosy marina at Norsminde Fjord is the perfect destination for a trip on a warm summer's day. First and foremost thanks to the exquisite eateries – whether you have a taste for fish cakes from Norsminde Fiskehus or gourmet at the historical Norsminde Kro. Bring your family, buy an ice cream cone, or have a stroll at the beach. Norsminde marina is located right where Norsminde Fjord meets the Kattegat via a lock and a narrow entrance.
Snaptun
Sailors make pilgrimages to this super familyfriendly marina in a cosy setting, perfectly situated at the mouth of Horsens Fjord. A large playground, a pagoda, an ice cream kiosk and a restaurant as well as small "bush paths" along the beach make the harbour an activity haven for the little ones. There is always something going on here, especially because of the ferry service to Endelave and Hjarnø. With its proximity to the islands and other ports the harbour also has everything your family-holiday-heart could wish for.
The old station town full of charm
Don’t miss out on a getaway to Odder. The old station town has beautiful buildings, a lovely shopping street, green areas, atmospheric squares and a chirping creek that runs straight through it all. And of course – a free treasure hunt!
Odder is a busy town full of commerce as well as a haven for the family with children. Here you’ll find lots of exciting chain stores as well as unique specialty boutiques.
Begin your quest at Torvet (the town square) and try our treasure hunt – for free!
Enjoy a much-earned break at Polititorvet, where the soft sounds of the creek sets the perfect backdrop to the charming old-town square. It’s one of our absolute favorites! Odder is buzzing with life and activities for both young and old.
The treasure hunt brings you by the most important places in town, while you learn about local history and solve tasks along the way. Pick up your treasure map at Mosters Café at Torvet or at kystlandet.com and receive your very own medal after completing the tasks.
Don’t miss out on a trip where you can enjoy nature. Odder is known for its beautiful shores with long, family-friendly beaches, charming harbours, green hills, rustling cornfields, windmills, and blue inlets.
Did you know?
…that “Odder“ means “otter“ in Danish, but the town was not named after the animal. The name probably refers to a crossing between two water courses or a ford. Thus, on the municipality’s crest, you can see two streams that meet, thereby creating a spit of land.
Shopping in Odder
Love shopping? We do. And this is why we are so pleased to be able to present the shopping town of Odder to you, where there are plenty of possibilities for some serious purchases.
With a mixture of speciality shops, known branches and supermarkets, you’ll need to bring along the big bag.
From Danish design to local crafts, from lifestyle and interior design to sporting equipment and beauty.
Buy a souvenir or visit one of the fashion stores, where you’ll always find something from both international and local brands. Among others, we recommend Anna & Søs, and Velklædt. Also, visit Violen, which is much more than just a florist. Here, you’ll find unique home decor, beautiful plants, and flowers.
Taking the town size into consideration, you might be surprised to find that Odder has one of the biggest Kvickly-stores in Denmark where you can find anything you need for every occasion. They also have a small shop filled with delicacies named Blas Coffee & Tea, which we still never manage to leave without buying hostess gifts to cover the next six months.
Do you love making a great flea market finding, discover antiques or find used items at bargain prices? In Odder, there is an abundance of exciting antiques, retro-stuff and secondhand shops. Here, you’ll find unique items, that might even tell a story about the local history. Within the town, you need to visit Værdicentralen,
while Møllebo Antik delivers the perfect fleamarket-experience in the countryside.
We have many other exciting shops in Odder. Get your overview at kystlandet.com or take a peaceful stroll through the streets of Odder.

Everywhere, you’ll come across small roadside stalls where you can buy everything from berries and fruits to apple juice, jams and vegetables. With fresh air and scenic surroundings included, it is the perfect family getaway.
One of the best things about whizzing around The Coastal Land is the many cosy farms you pass along the way. They supply high quality local produce to restaurants, supermarkets and other locals. But you are also allowed a taste! Take an excursion in the countryside and find delicious produce right by the roadside.
The slightly larger version of the roadside stall is the farm shop. And there is certainly no shortage of farm shops. Fru Møllers Mølleri is a complete and authentic country experience with everything you would expect. Make sure to set aside plenty of time so you can pop into the ice cream shop, the slaughterhouse, the garden centre and the mill - and fill your basket with freshly baked bread, aioli, cake and flour for your pantry.
Continue to either Tolstrup Apples or Karensminde Orchard, where you can pick your own basket full of fruit, as well as purchase the orchards' bottled homepressed juice. Also, visit the organic farm of Brandbygegård and fill your car with their cider and wines.
In the southwestern part of the region, you find the farm Blåbærgården which is beautiful and charming. If you are visiting during the short blueberry season in July and August, this is a must for any lover of farm shops.

Go on a tasting journey into the traditional Danish kitchen. This is solid, authentic food that really satisfies you and makes your taste buds rejoice.
In The Coastal Land the traditional Danish cuisine never goes out of fashion. Danish minced beef steak, fried pork with parsley, chicken, and asparagus tartlets, “smørrebrød” and “wienerbrød” – they have a special place in the Danish heart.
The most famous Danish dish of all is probably crispy fried pork with boiled potatoes and parsley sauce, often served with pickled beetroots and cucumbers or gherkins. Try it at Dollys in Horsens, Pejsegården in Brædstrup or Korning Kro. Fried fish filet is another danish specialty. Get it a Pynten in Horsens, where you have a full view over the scenic marina.
If your heart skips a beat when hearing about these classic dishes, then a trip to the charming island of Alrø is highly recommended. Here you find several great eateries with traditional Danish cuisine on
the menu. Enjoy the view of the inlet of Horsens Fjord, while you eat a beef tartare at Møllegården, a farm which is included in the writings of the famous Danish author Morten Korch.
Or visit the hilly countryside (Bakkelandet) west of Horsens and stop by Det Gamle Posthus, or go to the top of The Coastal Land, to Norsminde Smokehouse & Seafood Restaurant. Both establishments serve the fish-dish “stjerneskud” (shooting star) – which is a favourite among guests.
Are you more into cold plates, then visit Restaurant Møllers in Juelsminde or Mejeriet Tunø at the island of – well – Tunø, that both serve the culinary classic: Danish “smørrebrød”.
“Smørrebrød”
Denmark is world famous for the “smørrebrød”: an open sandwich where the base is a slice of rye bread spread with butter or grease, which is then topped with a good layer of cold cuts. The Danes have enjoyed “smørrebrød” since the 1880s, where the Industrialisation meant that many workers spent their days away from home, and therefore had to bring a packed lunch with them.
"Stjerneskud" at Norsminde Fiskehus Giant patty shells at Café Alrø Det Gamle Posthus in Brædstrup Dollys at the marina in HorsensExtraordinary gastronomy
Here, you find superb restaurants and eateries, the best local produce, well-appointed wine lists and exclusive surroundings that provide you with a true gourmet experience. Bon Appétit!
At the top of The Coastal Land, at the charming harbour in Norsminde Fjord, you’ll find a heavyweight in Danish gastronomy. Norsminde Kro ,which was elected Inn of the Year 2022 in Denmark, has both a brasserie and Restaurant Près, a top-notch gourmet re staurant, as well as an authentic wine cellar.
In Horsens, the pedestrian street Søndergade along with the small streets in the area is known as “the Latin Quarter”. They truly form the city’s gastronomic nerve.
In Horsens, you can have almost everything your hungry heart desires, regardless of whether you prefer the classic, the spicy or the delicate. For example, visit the Restaurant Eydes, enjoy the well-selected, organic seasonal menus at Gasfabrikken, or gorge yourself on delicious sharing dishes at Gran Social. Having difficulty deciding? At Ji-Mi’s in the Latin Quarter, simply choose whether you want five or seven delicious gourmet dishes and then just sit back and enjoy great food in an intimate re staurant and in extraordinarily good company.
At the centre of Odder, the taste of a small Romanesque village peeps out. Vecchio Convento means "the old monastery" and this family-run restaurant serves you a portion of real Italy, honest ingredients and a deeply felt passion for food, wine, and classic gastronomy. A surprising and very special experience.
The restaurant, Færgegården, at Hotel Juelsminde Strand is worth a visit for those who enjoy particularly good food. They even produce their own wine! With views of Juelsminde and the blue sea of the Kattegat combined with an exciting seasonal menu, you are guaranteed a full and tasty experience.
On the island of Alrø, you can enjoy a meal in a renovated pigsty. We are not joking! In fact, we would say that you would rarely have eaten so well in such a small island. Contemporary, seasonal dishes with a personal touch.
See the full list of restaurants at the pages 150-151.
Social dining
Try the concept of social dining at the restaurant In Horsens, you can try the concept of social dining at Gran Social in the charming Latin Quarter or at Jacobs Vin & Tapas on the main shopping street.
Hotel Juelsminde Strand Norsminde Kro Vecchio Convento Gasfabrikken Møllegården på AlrøAccommodation
Find the perfect place to rest your tired body.
So much to see, so little time! When there is more to experience, than you can manage in one day, luckily the possibilities for accommodation are many. A vacation home with view of the sea, a cosy camp site or a B&B? Or how about sleeping in a former prison, a luxurious spa hotel, a mansion from 1775, or a restored palace? The choice is yours.
First-class spa and wellness
Holiday at last! It is time for relaxation. And for pampering. And preferably both at the same time. If this is your type of holiday, then you’ll love the spa and wellness experience at Hotel Vejlefjord Kur & Spa. Bring your friends or your sweetheart - but leave the children at home. This is your day.
Putting it shortly: Mmmm! Hotel Vejlefjord offers to pamper your body and soul. Feel the worries and thoughts of work melt away as your muscles relax. With a formidable selection of thermal baths, s ensory showers, salt pool, saunas, steam baths and spa treatments, a visit to Vejlefjord is pure therapy.
You will experience how temperatures, lights, sounds, scents, tactile stimulation and the scenic surroundings sharpen your senses while simultaneously activating and relaxing every fibre in your body. In addition, you can experience Denmark's only Thalasso spa where you can enjoy the softening and de-stressing effect of salt.
Since 1900, the treatments at Vejlefjord have focused on pampering, tranquillity, immersion, healthy eating, exercising and fresh air.
When it was a sanatorium, these elements were essential for the recovery and healing of the patients. And more than 100 years later, these are still the principles - in renewed and refined form - that make you leave Vejlefjord as the best version of yourself.
A visit to Hotel Vejlefjord Kur & Spa includes fresh fruit, water and coffee/tea ad libitum. In the Vitalbar, you can buy extra refreshments, drinks and a light meal.
The health resort paths
Enjoy a healing walk or run along the signposted paths in the lush nature of Vejlefjord. The park and paths are open to everyone – even if you are not visiting the spa.
Sleep at the castle in the woods
Imagine waking up with a view of the fjord and surrounded by beech forest. Hotel Vejlefjord - also known as "the castle in the woods" - has lovely, atmospheric rooms and suites where you can get a good night's sleep whether you want to use the spa or not.
Exceptional accommodation
Spend a night at a manor house, at a mansion, a sanatorium or a prison and make the night an experience in itself. Here, you can still feel the presence of history - but do not worry, we have let in fresh air and the bed is new.
Jørgensens Hotel is a beautiful, completely renovated mansion from 1744 located in the middle of Horsens' historic pedestrian street. In addition to elegant surroundings, the hotel has a wine bar, a wine shop and a restaurant. At Comwell Bygholm Park, you are also met by historical charm and romance and, if you are (un)lucky, maybe even The White Lady.
Wake up to the sound of the ripples of the river Gudenå. We have cosy camping and tent sites along the most beautiful part of the river, and it is simply one of the most wonderful experiences in the Danish nature.
Hotel Vejlefjord is a former sanatorium and today its luxurious wellness and spa department means that the buildings have a healing effect on both body, mind, and relationships. However, if authenticity is the alpha and omega for you, go to prison in SleepIn Fængslet in Horsens.

Year-round holiday homes
What is more ideal for indoor comfort than a holiday home with a crackling stove? Meanwhile, the family can play a game or do those other activities, we so rarely have time for.
A holiday home is the perfect setting for your holiday in The Coastal Land, regardless of the season. Here, you’ll find homes that suit both hot summers and cold winters and which invite to relaxation, tranquility, and new experiences.
The windy days of autumn provide ample opportunity to fly a kite or go for a walk in the forests and collect chestnuts for making chestnut animals.
In the winter, you can visit cosy Christmas markets and small galleries before returning to your holiday home, the blanket, and the crackle of the wood-burning stove. Also, winter bathing is more popular than ever. Do you dare experience the cold shock? Many holiday homes are located so close to the beach that you can quickly run back and get warm again.
Staying in a holiday home during springtime is also perfect! As the weather slowly gets warmer, you’ll experience the bustle of tourists and activity slowly rising. Dip your toes in the warming ocean, or maybe put out on a sweater and eat the first ice-cream of the season.
The Coastal Land offers many fun and exciting activities year-round – which turn into great memories that’ll last a long time. For example, go on a rewarding treasure hunt in Odder, in Juelsminde, in Horsens or on the island of Tunø. It’s fun, challenging, (and free), for both kids and adult.
Bygholm Sø Camping
Ready – steady – camping!
With nature as your next-door neighbour and nothing but the sky above, camping gives you a feeling of freedom. And community. Caravan sites offer the perfect conditions for families and people with a taste for cosy gatherings.
Glamping
Most of our caravan sites offer accommodation in real glamping style. We love it! The hedonistic holiday trend for those who want to relax in nature without getting their hands dirty.
Is your tent full of holes?
And don't you have a caravan? No problem. At almost all caravan sites in The Coastal Land, you can spend the night in a cosy wooden cabin.
The Coastal Land has a wide belt of lovely beaches, each with its own beautiful caravan site. If you cannot get enough of the sea, you can even camp on an island.
However, when staying inland, you do not have to miss out on water – here, you can choose between lakes or the river Gudenå as the backdrop. And where there is no blue, there is green. All in all, the optimum conditions for slowing down completely in meditative nature or getting up your heart rate in the soft hilly landscape.
The local caravan sites in the area are equipped with family-friendly facilities which means that the youngest members of the family do not get bored while on holiday. Playgrounds, games rooms, ball courts, ice cream kiosks and miniature golf are just some of the things on offer at the sites. And the beaches and the surrounding nature make up one big playground in themselves.
Caravan sites are popular and fill up quickly, so hurry up and book for your next holiday. Find a list of all of them at pages 152-153.
