Welcome to Odder 100 kilometres of coastline, a car-free island, loads of great places to eat, a homely atmosphere… and so many other things. Odder is just classic holiday charm.
People often mention Saksild Beach as one of the most child-friendly beaches in Denmark. But it is just as perfect if you love kitesurfing, kayaking or stand up paddling all year round.
I hope this guide will inspire you to loads of experiences – and wish you a great stay!
And we must not forget “hygge”! Odder is a small but charming town with perfect oppor tunities for a nice family trip. You can even go on a (free!) treasure hunt in Odder or on our small, car-free island Tunø and bring home your very own medal. I took my own family on both trips – and I can highly recommend you do the same!
I hope this guide will inspire you to loads of experiences – and wish you a great stay! Best regards

ABOUT ODDER
Explore our local pantry – “farm-to-fork”- style. For instance, pick your own strawberries at Holtgaard and then try bottling your fresh milk from Vejlskovgaard. That’s a fun excursion for the whole family. And everything just tastes better, when you know the origins of the products.

The artist Ole Grøn
Odder was native town for several famous people – among others, the actor Jens Jørgen Spottag, the musician Thomas Buttenschön, the handball player Thomas Mogensen, the rower Juliane Elander, the artist Ole Grøn, and TV-host Sofie Linde.
Denmark's oldest miniature golf course is located at Saksild Beach.
“Odder“ means “otter“ in Danish, but the town was not named after the animal. The name probably refers to a crossing between two water courses or a ford. Thus, on the municipality’s crest, you can see two streams that meet, thereby creating a spit of land.
The town of Odder is mentioned for the first time in 1363 – then spelled “Oddræth“
The local cinema
”Biffen” is run by volunteers and an unpaid staff.

OUTDOOR
The east coast of Jutland is known for its calm and child-friendly beaches, which lie in the lee from the west wind. One of the best and most popular beaches is located at Saksild Beach, and we highly recommend a visit.
Did you know?
… that at a Blue Flag Beach, you always find clean bathing water, lifesaving and first-aid equipment, and public toilets? There are Blue Flags at the beaches in Saksild, Rude, Hølken, and Hou.
In the summer, the lifeguards scout around from their red and white towers, keeping a watchful eye on the guests on the beach, playing in the water. The children can have fun in the swings and look out to sea, where an amazing view of the island of Tunø appears. At Strandshoppen (the beach shop), you can buy beach toys, ice cream, lemonade – and lots of other stuff to complete your day at the beach.

Fishing tips
If you need good advice on how to coast fish, we recommend a visit to Effektlageret in Horsens, which also offers a large selection of fishing gear.
Hunting • Fishing • Camping • Trekking
“We recommend Alrø, if you want to catch sea trout and garfish; the area near the pier at the island’s tip and on both sides of the embankment are very popular among the local anglers”. Tunø is also a great place to fish. Here you can catch sea trout, garfish, flounders, codfish, and maybe even viviparous eelpout. Besides, the island is sometimes invaded by massive hordes of grey mullets. Because of the outlet from Norsminde Fjord, a large amount of sea trout migrates back and forth through the harbour on their passage to and from the Odder Stream. Thus, the Norsminde Harbour is an interesting place to fish. Read more about fishing grounds at VisitOdder.com.

Odder Travel Guide 2020
Odder Museum In beautiful surroundings in the middle of the town of Odder, lies the Odder Museum with the old Odder Water and Steam Mill as its centre. The old halftimbered house is a miller family’s farm house from 1844. The mill itself is about 40 years younger, and it looks exactly like it did in 1955, when production stopped.
The museum is located in a lovely green area just a few hundred metres from the town’s pedestrian street. When visiting Odder Museum, go explore the old mill, which after a 65 years break now is grinding and making flour again, thanks to the voluntering mill’s guild.
Odder Museum has a wide range of good, fun, exciting and educational activities for children, especially during the school holidays. Here the children can sense, see, touch and feel for themselves what the living conditions in the past were like.
In the museum’s exhibitions, you can explore the local history and learn about life on the coast, and often you can find a special exhibition displaying the artworks of local artists.
The good stories do not stay within the museum setting. Many of the best stories you can experience outside in the surroundings where they took place, when the nature guide takes you on a round trip on foot, on your bike, or maybe even in a kayak on the water.

Manors
Beautiful manor houses are scattered across the vicinity. These buildings are symbols of the agricultural area of the olden days when the good conditions for cultivating the land attracted and created wealthy landowners.
Did you know? ...that you can see an old bear cave in the forest west of the Rathlousdal Manor? The cave dates back to the 1800s, and Russian bears once lived here when there was a small zoo in the forest.
Rathlousdal The Bear Cave
The manor houses are now privately owned and not open to the public. But, of course, that does not make them any less interesting.
At Rathlousdal, they buried the lord in 1681 after a sudden turn had killed him.
“150 years later, during a restoration of the burial site, a twisted corpse was found - unfortunately, the lord had only been apparently dead and thus had been buried alive!" Find more stories and a full guide to the old manor houses of Odder at VisitOdder.com.

CULTURE & HISTORY
For example, did you know that in the 1800s, the British owners of the Gyllingnæs Estate presumably had a past as pirates? Or that the Noble Lady at the Åkjær Estate in the 1700s not only wanted to be buried in a silk gown and nice silk stockings, she also wanted the very same stockings changed every year around Christmas?

Spring, summer, winter, fall… Naturally, the summer holiday must be enjoyed in a holiday home near the beach, so you can quickly cool off with a fresh dip in the sea. The windy days of autumn, on the other hand, provide ample opportunity to fly a kite or go for a walk in the forests and collect chestnuts for making chestnut animals. In the winter, you can visit cosy Christmas markets and small galleries before returning to your holiday home, the blanket and the crackle of the wood-burning stove. Spring is also fantastic in Odder. With the return of the mild weather, locals and tourists alike flock to the shore to dip their toes in the water, catch crabs from the bathing jetties and enjoy the first ice cream cone. Odder always has wonderful experiences and fun activities on offer. For example, you can go on a treasure hunt in Odder or on Tunø - for free - and receive a medal as proof of your feat. There are unique opportunities to gather lots of good holiday memories – all year round.

But don’t worry. Fængslet will not lock you up. Contrary to the great escape artist Carl Lorentzen, who dug his way out of the State Prison through an 18-metre-long tunnel, you are free to leave the prison again. It is a modern cultural bastion filled with life, activities and experiences all year round. A captivating conference center with all the facilities that companies can wish for. Travel back in time in the Workers’ Living Quarters
Denmark’s Industrial Museum Do you recognize the scent of “the good old days“? If not, then you can experience it in authentic surroundings at Denmark’s Industrial Museum. The museum lets you discover the amazing story of how the industrialisation shaped our society and the way we live.
As soon as you enter the museum, you can feel it: You have stepped back in time and now you can really get an impression of what life was like for your parents, your grandparents and their parents. Do your children also love touching everything they see? Then there is nothing to worry about because this is heaven for curious fingers! At Denmark’s Industrial Museum, there is room for play, and if you follow the footprints going through the buildings, you will be sure to experience it all. Children can become industrial spies for a day, try attending a class as if you lived in 1950’s Denmark, visit a grocery shop in the shopping street or stand behind the counter in the old radio & TV shop.
“In Denmark’s Industrial Museum the attention to detail and authenticity is overwhelming”. In the Workers’ Living Quarters, your sight as well as your other senses are brought into play. Here you can explore not only how people lived in the old days but also what they ate, because in the kitchen the aunties are often preparing dishes from the old days, and you are welcome to taste! In addition to this, the museum is staffed with volunteers and passionate people who are enthusiastic about their field, so you can get an answer to all your questions. You will notice this, the minute you enter: the enjoyable atmosphere and the friendly, helpful staff. That is exactly what makes you feel welcome at once.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TRAVEL GUIDE This travel guide is produced with as much consideration for the environment as at all possible.
It is printed on Cradle-to-Cradle-certified paper and printed using Cradle-to-Cradle-certified inks – both produced entirely without any harmful chemicals or heavy metals. The Cradle-to-Cradle certification is one of the world’s most stringent environmental certifications and it guarantees that a product does not pollute or use the limited resources of the earth but,
rather, is part of nature’s own cycle. It also ensures that the printed products are produced under as environmentally friendly conditions as possible. The wood pulp used in producing the guide is derived from sustainable FSC forestry in Europe. This means that the origin is 100 % controlled – and, at the same time, it ensures that no more wood is felled than may be reproduced by the forests.
Thank you for reading. Helle Berthold Rosenberg Head of Tourism
