Welcome to Horsens

I am sincerely happy that you have chosen to visit us – and I hope that you will take away a host of good memories. Horsens is a lovely mix of culture and nature no matter where you turn. With popular attractions such as the Prison (the former State Penitentiary), Denmark’s Industrial Museum, Horsens Museum, and The Uncovered Bridge near Brædstrup – to mention but a few – as well as shopping opportunities, numerous activities for children and unique outings in nature, it is actually difficult to choose. A trip to the city centre thus offers everything from shopping to play, Denmark’s widest pedestrian street and a good meal in cosy settings to concerts and museum visits. And if you venture outside the city a little, Horsens offers fantastic nature around the most beautiful stretch of the river Gudenåen, which is best experienced either on foot, on a bicycle or in a canoe. Also, do not miss the hike all the way around Endelave, which is known for its wild rabbits. The route is called “The Kanino”, and can be covered with a day trip to the island by ferry. Horsens really has something for every taste and unique experiences which should be part of any bucket list. Hopefully, this Welcome Guide will inspire you to make your holiday something quite special. You can even read and use it without any sense of guilt. This Welcome Guide is made from 100-percent biodegradable materials. This means that you could actually bury it in your garden where it would be degraded without leaving any kind of harmful chemicals or heavy metals. A tiny, but important step towards more sustainable tourism. Enjoy! Best regards

Helle Berthold Rosenberg Head of Tourism

DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT HORSENS? Horsens has Denmark’s widest pedestrian street.

Russia’s royal family lived in Horsens. In 1780, the Empress of Russia – Katharina the Great – banished two princes and two princesses to the town of Horsens, where they lived for the rest of their lives in a large manor on the Town Square.

6

Horsens accommodates 129 of the 195 nationalities in the world.

The name ”Horsens” comes from the words “hors” (horse) and ”næs” (headland). Thus, ”Horsens” means ”the headland with the horses”.

NOTHING BEATS A NICE DAY AT THE STANDS

In Horsens, football is the biggest sport – at least if you are here as a spectator.

Visit the city’s stadium, CASA Arena Horsens, where you can follow the area’s largest football club, AC Horsens, when they run onto the field in the premier league of Danish football, Superligaen. AC Horsens was founded 25 years ago, in 1994, as a collaboration between the city’s many football clubs, including the parent club, Horsens Forenede Sportsklubber. The club’s dream of moving up in the Superligaen finally became a reality in 2005 with a series of 20 matches without defeat – including 12 consecutive victories. Both are still club records today. With only a couple of detours to Denmark’s second league, AC Horsens has played against Denmark’s best football teams. The team answers the nickname “Den Gule Fare” or “The Yellow Danger” which is also the name of the club’s official fan club, and you may recognise the players by their yellow and black uniform colours.

14

The club values are unity, humility and hard work. This is also reflected in the attitude of the players , the stadium and the fans. Horsens is also home to Horsens IC, one of Denmark’s best basketball teams. The team plays its home games in the basketball league, Basketligaen, in Forum Horsens. The same court is used by the ladies in the handball club, Horsens Håndboldklub, who are in Denmark’s second handball series. Nothing beats a nice day in the stands. Apart from the favourite team winning!

“Inspiring 40 LEGO innovators is hard but the Faengslet prison venue certainly gave us a great start. Granted sleeping in cells was not to everyone’s taste, but a trip round the awesome museum put this into context. What really made the difference was how the team looked after us. Nothing was too much trouble or too hard. Having run venues all around the world, this is now one of my favourites.”

This makes a tour of the amazing building a great experience for both young and old. And this is also why the museum has won several awards for its exciting exhibitions which give you a different, thought-provoking, and magic experience. Here you get an extraordinary opportunity to get behind bars and meet former inmates as shadows on the walls, or follow an employee through the museum via interactive ID-cards.

And Fængslet really is something quite unique. No matter if you visit the hostel SleepIn, the prison museum or participate in business events or events at Fængslet, then you meet the illuminating, rough, and unpolished world which tells the story of the surroundings. The buildings’ creative murals on cell blocks and in staircases are painted by inmates, and the heavy doors and the barbed wire on top of the penitentiary gate draws your attention to the fact that this is not a place you easily escape from. There are people who have actually lived the main part of their lives behind these walls, men who were punished here, and children of inmates who at a very early age were forced to face the harsh realities of life.

Shopping Culture

But Fængslet is something else and much more than rough walls, prison yards, and cell blocks. It is a business with five branches consisting of a museum, a conference department, a hostel, events, and an innovative environment with rental of office space and event facilities. Within all areas, the common goal is creating experiences out of the ordinary, as well as being a beacon in Horsens in the attempt to make the town something special.

Practical info

On the bicycle ferry, you will also get the opportunity to experience nature up close. Go on island hopping to the various islands, where

If you are crazy about entertainment and big attractions, then Horsens luckily is situated as a sweet spot right between Legoland, Givskud Zoo, Tivoli Friheden, Moesgaard Museum, the Ecolarium, Rush, and Labyrinthia, which are all within driving distance and therefore obvious places to arrange fun day trips to. No matter what you decide, there is always an ice cream within reach.

Calendar

Would you rather experience nature, then visit Børnebondegården, the Children’s Farm, where you can see, pet, and talk to guinea pigs, hens, geese, ducks, goats, sheep, horses, and cows. There is plenty of space to play on playcows, in the play house, race on play tractors, or watch the milking of a cow.

it feels as if time stands still. Are you more into competitions and playing in the open air, then you can try a game of Medieval Mini Golf at Horsens City Camping. In the middle of the 12hole mini golf course, there is a large castle, and if you are not careful, you could end up in the Witch’s pot or get trapped in the pillory. Try to take a look at page 32 in our guide and find playgrounds in the neighbouring area or places to play in the townscape.

Bucket list & Tours

Are you looking for educational and cultural experiences which you can enjoy together? Then Horsens has a lot to offer. Try reading the articles about Fængslet and Denmark’s Industrial Museum in this guide, or explore Horsens Museum, Horsens Art Museum, the libraries of Horsens, the historic farm Høgdal, or Glud Museum.

Shopping & accommodation

In Horsens, you can see, try and touch the past as well as experience the present. You can sail in a canoe and ride a bike out in nature, meet animals up close, play in wonderful playgrounds, or go on a hunt for an adrenaline rush.

PLAYGROUNDS The skate and parkour park ”Concrete Plaza” at the Town Hall Square

No matter where you are in Horsens, the nearest playground is not far away, when the children need an opportunity to romp in the open air. To make things easier for you, we have listed all the playgrounds in the town centre as well as townscapes with alternative play areas.

1 Caroline Amalie Lunden

Caroline Amalie Lunden’s playground is perfect for the youngest. It is surrounded by a lovely park and well screened off from the road. There are tables and benches, so you can bring your packed lunch without problems. Within the park, you can also encounter a petanque court, basket and a foosball table.

2 Bygholm Lake Camp Site

Here you find a small playground at the camping site with a slide, an outdoor balance beam, swings, and a sandpit. The playground is situated on the northern side of Bygholm Lake, and at the camping site you can rent canoes.

3 Bygholm Park playground

Bygholm is a lovely park situated close to the train station and the town centre. Here you find a large play area with swings, a seesaw, a zip wire, a beech labyrinth, a sandpit, and tables and benches. There are also equipment for disc golf and a fitness training route where you can strengthen your muscles and balance. If you want to feed the ducks, this is where you get the opportunity.

32

4 Town Hall Park and Town Hall Square

On both sides of the Town Hall, you will find lots of space to play. In the Town Hall Park, there are soccer goals, playground equipment and outdoor fitness equipment, as well as an enclosed football field. At the Town Hall Square, a massive skate and parkour park has been put up, but you can also play table tennis or have fun with your skipping rope. NB: From late November, the skate park is replaced by an ice rink.

5 Langelinie and the Marina

Right after the Marina, there is a lovely green area by the inlet of Horsens Fjord and close to the town. Here you can use the swing on the 5-m-tall troll sculpture, “Trolle Troels”, slackline between his two troll kids, or jump into the water. Here you find a town beach and a bathing jetty. Every year during the summer, different entertaining installations are put up. At the Marina, the children can catch crabs in the summer or try the cable ferry. Go look for yourself. It is a great place for everybody.

6 Husodde path

Do you need a break while on the go? At the Husodde Path by Sølystvej, you find a small but very fun Tarzan circuit.

ENDELAVE In Endelave village you find a lot of old halftimbered farms, especially near the village pond. There are also a number of shops, a grocery store, and several eateries. In the Medical Herb Garden, where a wide range of funny and intriguing organic herbs, medical plants, and flowers are grown, you can enjoy your lunch. You are welcome to take a dip in the clear and clean water which is perfect for diving.

Under the surface there is a thriving bottom flora and various fish species. Read more about recreational beaches on Endelave on page 62. Hiking Endelave’s coastline can be done in 6 hours, but you can also see the island from the back of a horse from Endelave Turridning, rent a bicycle, go on a tractor trip, or have a guided tour in e.g. the Medical Herb Garden. Read more about guided tours at endelave-guide.dk (only in Danish). Do you feel like staying a little longer, then extend your visit on Endelave and stay at Endelave Kro, overnight. For example, you can stay at Endelave Kro, in a tent at Endelave Camp Site, or rent a vacation house at Kongsvang or Kærhuset.

Did you know…

... that traces have been found from people on Alrø dating back to the Stone Age?

44

Alrø is a small, lovely island which is connected to the mainland via a 1 km long embankment.

The atmosphere on Alrø is very special. The winding road, the scattered halftimbered houses, and the beautiful nature with the everpresent coastline seem like a time warp filled with rural idyll. The Danish author, Morten Korch, did in fact live and work on Alrø for several periods, where he let himself be inspired by the surroundings on the island, and the farms such as Bakkegården and Møllegården can be recognised in his writings.

... that the small, deserted islands at Alrø called Pollerne are important breeding grounds for many birds?

Alrø Traktørsted

ALRØ

The island has several pleasant eateries, and you can even enjoy your dinner in a former pig house. The island is visited by a lot of wind surfers, kitesurfers, kayakers, anglers, and yachtsmen who use the waters around Alrø.

Møllegården

In the southern end of the island, you find the old steamboat pier, which is a popular excursion spot all year round. This is also the place where the small bicycle-ferry crosses the inlet of Horsens Fjord and connects Alrø with Hjarnø and Snaptun in the summer.

The Tunø Ferry

The car-free island, Tunø, is a small nature paradise with a fantastic history and an atmosphere which you sense as soon as the ferry berths. First, there is a lively buzz when the ferry berths. Shortly afterwards, everything is peace and quiet. The island has a very special island atmosphere which helps you slow down completely and calls for presence and quality time. Tractors of all kinds and bicycles with imaginative wagons are Tunø’s only means of transport.

Hiking by Klinten

Tunø town is a few steps away from the harbour with the cosy village pond and the closely-packed houses. Tunø has its own grocery store, school, museum, several shops and restaurants.

Take a guided tour in nature

You can get close to island life and the good stories by taking a guided full-day tour with the Tunø guide, Hanne Thaysen. She will show you around the island’s varied nature on tractor and on foot. Finally, do not miss the view from Tunø Kirke’s unique church tower which, as the only one in Denmark, is also a lighthouse. You can enjoy the same beautiful views from the bird tower on the ”Mountain”. Tunø’s combined church tower and lighthouse

HJARNØ

VisitHorsens.com

For children

In the inlet of Horsens Fjord, just 800 m from the mainland, you find the island of Hjarnø. The name Hjarnø probably comes from the Old Norse word “Hjarni’’, which means an elevation in the terrain, and the island’s highest point is indeed a whopping 7 m above sea level.

Island hopping

On the island’s southern coast, you find the “Viking Ships”, a stone row probably from the Viking Age. The church on Hjarnø is the second smallest in Denmark, and the votive ship hanging under the vault is a model of a Viking ship.

Bucket list & Tours

The sandy soil and the warm island climate make up the perfect conditions for the cultivation of Denmark’s “national vegetable”. THE RIVER

GUDENÅEN

Are you ready to relax? South of Horsens, a spring trickles out of the ground. This is where the river Gudenåen begins its journey, and here you have the opportunity to get very close to nature. The river Gudenåen is Denmark’s longest water course of more than 150 km, and it has a water level drop of 70 metres from the sources to its outfall. No matter if you want to hike in the Gudenå area, angle, or sail a canoe, then you are in for an amazing trip in a very scenic landscape. The river starts at the sources in Tørring and runs all the way to Randers. In the area along the river, you can also climb “mountains” with beautiful views and go horseback riding or take a trip with a horse carriage. For more information, go to VisitHorsens.com and Oplevgudenaa.dk (only in Danish) In canoe on the river Gudenå

KLOSTERMØLLE

Did you know… … that in the Middle Ages, a Benedictine abbey was located here? There are only few remains, but the monks dammed up the Gudenåen and led the water through a canal to the abbey. In this way, the monks could use the water for both a water mill and a system for irrigating their meadows. 56

In the scenic area around the mill of Klostermølle and the hill of Sukkertoppen, you find Denmark’s only river, Gudenåen, as well as Jutland’s second largest lake, Mossø. Here, nature is varied with a rich animal and bird life, and therefore the area is perfect as an excursion spot. In the northern end of the barn at Klostermølle, there is a bird watching tower from where you have an amazing view. The mill of Klostermølle was built by monks of the Benedictine Order in the 1100s, and in 1872 it was converted into a paper mill. A fire in 1973 put an end to the production, and since then the mill has displayed a public exhibition about the mill’s history and the industry that operated here based on water power.

FYELMOSE

NATURE AND FISHING PARK Do you need to gear down? The fresh air and the smell of nature, red cheeks, and the sense of community. You will meet all this in the back yard of the Gudenåen, and only 2.5 km from The Uncov ered Bridge. This is where you find Horsens’s largest fishing park. The Nature and Fishing Park is a large nature area with meadows, small woodland, and lovely nature trails, so it is evident that you go here to explore nature. The area is also unusually rich in insects, birds, and wild life, and you can hardly avoid seeing kingfishers, swans, and deer (besides fish of course), when you come to visit. And despite the owners of the place calling themselves the River Man and the Sea Witch, there is nothing to fear here. In fact, they are so focused on creating the best possible experience for you, that they are always ready to help you find other great activities and eating and accommodation opportunities in the area. 60

The Fyelmose Nature and Fishing Park is not just one but three lakes for fishing: The Children’s Lake, the Family Lake, and the Nature Lake. Here you can catch many different kinds of trout. In the Children’s Lake, the fish may be small, but the joy of catching them the biggest of all. And the Children’s Lake is actually the only one of its kind in Denmark: it is filled with organic rainbow trouts. In the Nature Lake, the largest fish live, but the Family Lake, where the medium-sized fish live, is also something very special. Here you can walk in water up to your knees (in your waders) and stand in the reeds or fish directly into the deep from lakeshores, banks, and islands. In this way, Fyelmose is amazing for everybody who wants to be active in nature - no matter if you are a novice, intermediate, or a professional angler, or whether the entire family comes along. In fact, you can get guidance, because the Nature and Fishing Park is happy to put an assistant coach at your disposal. When you get hungry, and you will after a long day out in the open air, then everything

you have caught can be cleaned and prepared here. If you don’t like (to eat) fish, then you can also get help: from the River Man and the Sea Witch, you can buy sausages, pies, and steaks that you can put on the barbeque, so that everybody goes home happy and full.

Ecology and sustainability

At the Fyelmose Nature and Fishing Park, nature and the good experiences are in the foreground. Therefore work is continuously done to make the place even more sustainable and to further ecology, among other things, by having green operational routines and guidelines for the use and protection of the nature park, so animal wellfare is assured. To you as a guest, this not only means that you have the opportunity to catch an organic fish, you can also pamper yourself with delicious, organic seafood delicacies from the new farm shop at Fyelmose. If you would rather prepare the fish yourself, you can buy a fresh fish to take home instead.

BEACHES & BATHING LAKES Horsens is a wonderland for aquaphiles, and if you are a water lover, there are several great bathing opportunities to choose from. We have good recreational beaches, where you can swim in the blue waves of the sea, and lovely bathing lakes, where you can enjoy a swim in the calm waters. Here you have our best references to great bathing experiences in nature. Husodde Beach

Husodde Beach, Horsens

Husodde Beach on the northern side of the inlet of Horsens Fjord is the area’s only Blue Flag-beach, and it is without doubt one of the most popular places to bathe in Horsens. In the summer season, a bathing jetty is put up on the beach which is frequently used by both water lovers and crab fishers. There is a playground and public toilets at the beach, as well as the opportunity to play mini golf or buy an ice cream at the neighbouring Horsens City Camping. Besides, there are several good biking and hiking routes in the area. Langelinie Town Beach

Langelinie Town Beach, Horsens

Only 2 km from the pedestrian street, you find Langelinie Town Beach, the area’s newest recreational beach and one of the popular gathering places in the town during the summer. Here you can take a swim from the 100 m long bathing jetty, relax in the deep, soft sand, play beach volleyball, swing in the “sensing swing”, or walk the rope on the slackline on the beach. There are public toilets and showers at the beach, and during summer, activities for young and old are arranged.

Ring Lake, Brædstrup

On the outskirts of Brædstrup, you find the Ring Lake which is one of the area’s most popular bathing lakes. Besides the excellent bathing water, as a visitor you can enjoy a 42 m long, U-shaped bathing jetty with two boarding ladders, and a thick layer of soft beach sand. There are public toilets by the lake as well as tables and benches, where you and your loved ones can have a picnic. Round off your visit with a 3 km walk around the lake, or go shopping in Brædstrup where you can also enjoy a delicious meal. Read more on page 59.

The Beaches of Endelave

Just off the inlet of Horsens Fjord lies the charming rabbit island of Endelave, where you get no less than 20 km of coastline with shallow, child friendly water and four great recreational beaches. They are situated here: West of the Endelave harbour; at Søndermølle on the island’s south side; on the west side of Endelave’s north tip; and in the southern end of the nature area called “Øvre”, located on the east side of the island. Once on Endelave, don’t miss out on a visit to the Medical Herb Garden. Read more about experiences on Endelave at VisitHorsens.com.

Coast fishing

You can fish for sea and rainbow trouts in many locations along the inlet of Horsens Fjord, and in the summer half, also garfish and grey mullets. In the Horsens harbour, aside from the abovementioned species, you can catch herring and flatfish. Especially on the north side and the inner part of the inlet, the water is so shallow, that waders are necessary. You must wade with caution, as the seabed conditions and currents can be dangerous in several places. Please remember to pay regard to the current preservation zones (see map). Read more about fishing grounds at Visithorsens.com If you are between 18 and 65 years of age, you need a valid fishing permit. You can buy it at Fisketegn.dk, at Horsens City Camping or at Effektlageret, which also offers a large selection of fishing gear.

DANISH FOOD

Restaurant Vrads Station

Danish Open Sandwiches Denmark is world famous for the “smørrebrød”: an open sandwich where the base is a slice of rye bread spread with butter or grease, which is then topped with a good layer of cold cuts e.g. rolled seasoned meat with Italian Salad and onion rings; liver pâté with bacon, jelly and onion rings; or a breaded fish fillet with shrimps, asparagus, and remoulade. The Danes have enjoyed “smørrebrød” since the 1880s, where the Industrialisation meant that many workers spent their days away from home, and therefore, had to bring a packed lunch with them.

Do you feel like trying something truly Danish? Then go on a tasting journey into the traditional Danish kitchen, where the dinner courses are compiled by lots of meat, potatoes and gravy in different variations. This is solid, authentic food that really satisfies you and makes your taste buds rejoice. The most famous Danish dish of all is probably crispy fried pork with boiled potatoes and parsley sauce often served with pickled beetroots and cucumbers or gherkins. If fried pork is at the top of your foodwish list, then visit e.g. Korning Kro, where fried pork is the special of the day on Wednesdays, or restaurant Dollys at the harbour in Horsens, where you can eat fried pork 6 days a week. Here you also find classic dishes as fried beef tartare, beef sandwich with soft onions and pickled beetroots, as well as lemon mousse.

Alrø Traktørsted

If your heart beats for Danish food, then a trip to the charming island of Alrø is highly recommended. Here you find several great eateries with classic Danish dishes on the menu. Enjoy the view of the inlet of Horsens Fjord, while you eat a “Shooting Star” or a beef tartare at Møllegården at Alrø, a farm which is included in the writings of the famous Danish author Morten Korch. Or look forward to a Danish omelette with bacon, fried fillets of plaice, pork tenderloin stew, or a layer cake at Alrø Traktørsted, where the interior decoration will give you the feeling that you have travelled back in time.

At that time, a strike among the Danish bakers meant that the bakeries had to hire, among others, Austrian bakers who brought with them previously unknown baking traditions and techniques to Denmark. Their pastry was adapted to the Danish taste, and in this way, lay the foundation stone for the Danish or “Wiener bread” you can buy in the country’s bakeries today.

If you enjoy shopping, then come to Horsens! Søndergade, Denmark’s widest pedestrian street, and the surrounding side streets invites you to a shopping experience of scale. In the city centre alone, you find more than 150 shops where you can shop to your heart’s delight. With that many places to shop, you only have one problem. Where to start? When shopping in Horsens, you can find everything from the latest fashion and Danish design handicrafts to toys, hobby and leisure, delicacies, groceries and much more. At Kvist Galleri & Interiør, you can find all the lovely bits and bobs that give your home personality. Apart from inspiration for interior decoration, Kvist offers beautiful wall art, exciting ceramics, and amazing cacti. Here is something for everybody and within all price ranges. Don’t forget to stop by Blindes Arbejde, where you can support a good course by buying fine pieces of craftsmanship made by blind people, such as the loveliest dish brushes, brooms etc. And they really know what they are doing at Blindes Arbejde, because they have created sustainable crafts since 1929. Do you need to renew your wardrobe, then you will also find lots of exciting designers in the town’s shops. Take a trip to the shopping center bytorvHORSENS, where you can also find a free play area and a lot of exciting activities for children. 86

Here you can find everything you are looking for while checking out the alleys along the pedestrian street for delicious refreshments, e.g. at To Go. If you like vintage and antique shops, you should visit Blå Kors Genbrug – the biggest second-hand store in Denmark – located just outside the city centre.

Especially the former police station and the Police Square, where the children can play at the fountain, offer an amazing atmosphere and a unique experience due to their location right by the Odder Stream. In the town’s pedestrian street, you find a wide range of shops, and if you get hungry from all the walking, then try one of the town’s many charming eateries with Danish, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Italian, Greek, or Turkish specialties. Don’t miss out on a trip where you can enjoy nature.
