Welcome to Odder I am sincerely happy that you have chosen to visit us – and I hope that you will take away a host of good memories. Odder has something for every taste and in this Welcome Guide, we try to give you an overview of your many different options. They say that Odder is the centre of Denmark, and we even have a stone to “prove it”. If you count Bornholm, however, this does not entirely true, but it is still a good story and, in Odder, we have lots of good stories. We are especially known for our marvellous coastline where Saksild Beach is often referred to as one of the east coast’s most child-friendly beaches. And then there is the fun and cosiness! Odder may be a smallish town, but it still has a host of shops, gastronomic peals and farm shops and is surrounded by lovely nature. If you venture outside town a little, you will encounter cosy harbour towns, beautiful manor houses and churches, good cycling paths and charming islands. I would specifically recommend a treasure hunt on Tunø, where both children and childish grown-ups can receive a medal for walking around the island. Hopefully, this guide will inspire you to lots of great experiences that will make your holiday something quite special. You can even peruse it without any sense of guilt. This Welcome Guide is made from 100-percent biodegradable materials. This means that you could actually bury it in your garden where it would be degraded without leaving any kind of harmful chemicals or heavy metals. A tiny, but important step towards more sustainable tourism. Enjoy! Best regards

Helle Berthold Rosenberg Head of Tourism

DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT ODDER? The town of Odder is mentioned for the first time in 1363 – then spelled ”Oddræth”.

Saksild Beach

Odder has 94 km of coastline - from Norsminde in the north via Rude, Saksild, Dyngby, and Hou to Amstrup and Sondrup in the south, and then all the way around the islands of Alrø and Tunø. 4

Odder has Denmark’s only water slide with a lift. It is located in the public swimming pool, Vandhalla, in Hou.

The local cinema, ”Biffen”, is run by volunteers and an unpaid staff.

Bjerager Church

Shopping

In 1796, the famous Danish author Steen Steensen Blicher moved to Odder with his family where his father, Niels Blicher, was appointed pastor in the parishes of Randlev and Bjerager. St. St. Blicher’s short story ”En jydsk Mordbrænderhistorie” is based on the history of the manse, when it burned down in 1749.

Odder was native town for several famous people – among others, the actor Jens Jørgen Spottag, the musician Thomas Buttenschön, the handball player Thomas Mogensen, the rower Juliane Elander, the artist Ole Grøn, and TV-host Sofie Linde.

Culture

“Odder” means “otter” in Danish, but the town was not named after the animal. The name probably refers to a crossing between two water courses or a ford. Thus, on the municipality’s crest, you can see two streams that meet, thereby creating a spit of land.

On the small farm Brandbygegaard you can find fresh ingredients that have been farmed with warmth and enthusiasm, and you can even take a walk in the vineyard and kitchen garden or say hello to the farm animals. The farm is also home to Vinhuset Kvist & Vitus, where you can buy self-produced sparkling apple and grape wine, cider, port, beer, gin and vodka.

The island also has its own micro-brewery, Tunø Brewery, which produces specialty beers, mead, cider and fruit wine. Here, the brewer has a hand in the whole process from selecting local produce to bottling. The brewery’s strawberry wine is, for example, made from local strawberries. The products, which vary according to the season, can be purchased at Tunø Købmandsgård and enjoyed in the island’s public houses.

Accommodation

Smoked salt from Tunø Smokehouse is smoked for a minimum of seven days with Danish beech dust which is evident from both the golden amber colour of the salt, its smells and, not least, its taste.

Culture

Pottery by Karoline Illum

Ceramic artist Karoline Illum sells fine ceramics from her small workshop at Sondrup Bed & Breakfast, where you can also stay overnight after a fresh hiking or cycling trip in Sondrup Bakker.

Tunø has a long tradition of agriculture, and the island is known for its exceptionally good leeks. The quality of Tunø home-grown vegetables is quite unique. It is the island’s DNA. Every summer, new potatoes, crisp, green asparagus and fresh carrots and peas delight both eyes and taste buds.

For kids

At Øko Ged & Grønt in Sondrup, you can see how goat cheese is made. Here, the milk from 140 milk goats is transformed into lovely cheeses or yogurt in the small dairy. And, in the farm shop, you can buy cuts of goat meat and homemade goat meat sausages. If you have never tasted goat before, this is a unique opportunity.

HJARNØ

In the inlet of Horsens Fjord, just 800 m from the mainland, you find the island of Hjarnø. The name Hjarnø probably comes from the Old Norse word “Hjarni”, which means an elevation in the terrain, and the island’s highest point is indeed a whopping 7 m above sea level. On the island’s southern coast, you find the “Viking Ships”, a stone row probably from the Viking Age. The church on Hjarnø is the second smallest in Denmark, and the votive ship hanging under the vault is a model of a Viking ship. On the island, you find a restaurant, a camping site, and a gallery. And in the summer, a bicycle-ferry runs between Alrø, Hjarnø and Snaptun.

ALRØ VisitOdder.com

Alrø is a small, lovely island which is connected to the mainland via a 1 km long embankment. The winding road, the scattered half-timbered houses, and the beautiful nature with the ever-present coastline seems like a time warp filled with rural idyll. The Danish author, Morten Korch, did in fact live and work on Alrø for several periods, where he let himself be inspired by the surroundings on the island, and the farms such as Bakkegården and Møllegården can be recognised in his writings. The island has several pleasant eateries. Visit Møllegården, where the restaurant is set up in the former pig house. At Café Alrø, you can try to beat the record in patty shell eating, and at Alrø Traktørsted, located in the old grocer’s farm that oozes cosiness and atmosphere, you can taste Danish open sandwiches, regional Danish dishes, coffee and cake. After a great meal, you can experience paintings and intimate concerts at Galleri Mynster in the island’s old school building. You sense the closeness to the sea and nature everywhere, and many windsurfers, kitesurfers, kayakers, anglers, and yachtsmen use the waters around Alrø. Read more about fishing grounds on page 29. In the southern end of the island, you find the old steamboat pier, which is a popular excursion spot all year round. This is also the place where the small bicycle-ferry crosses the inlet of Horsens Fjord and connects Alrø with Hjarnø and Snaptun in the summer. Read more on page 47.

THE ODDER MUSEUM In beautiful surroundings in the middle of the town of Odder, lies the Odder Museum with the old Odder Water and Steam Mill as its centre. The old half-timbered house is a miller family’s farm house from 1844. The mill itself is about 40 years younger, and it looks exactly like it did in 1955, when production stopped, filled with gorgeous mechanics and machinery. In the museum’s exhibitions, you can explore the local history and learn about life on the coast. Besides, you can see the impressive hunting exhibition that tells the story of hunting in Denmark and in the local area, and often you can find a special exhibition displaying the artworks of local artists. The museum has a wide range of good, fun, exciting and educational activities for children, especially during the school holidays. Here the children can sense, see, touch and feel for themselves what the living conditions in the past were like.

64

The good stories do not stay within the museum setting. Many of the best stories you can experience outside in the surroundings where they took place, when the nature guide takes you on a round trip on foot, on your bike, or maybe even in a kayak on the water. In the café, you can sit down and enjoy a good cup of coffee and a piece of pastry from Fru Møllers Mølleri. Here you can also find a lot of local-historical books about the Odder vicinity.

CHURCHES

The Odder vicinity is rich on beautiful churches. When you visit them, you can see many types of Romanesque church buildings and medieval church art. You feel the presence of history when you visit the old buildings. Stop by the Alrø Church and see the very special baptismal font. It features four carved beasts in a crouching position - their feet turned outwards and their arms spread wide - thus crossing those of the adjacent figure. The church even has two bells, and in connection with a death, a very special tradition is held on to by tolling the bells for a full hour, even though this was outlawed at the Reformation in 1536. In Ørting Church, the golden crucifix is quite a gem. It dates back to about 1230, and it is an excellent example of the French-inspired early Gothic Art in Denmark. You can see a copy in the church, because the original crucifix is kept at the National Museum of Denmark. If the churches of Odder could speak, they could tell many small stories about intrigues, past glories and downfalls. One story even recounts that the churchwardens in the parish of Hundslund killed their priest in 1284.

MANORS

Active in Odder

Even though the manors at Odder are closed to the public, there is still a lot to be told.

The Noble Lady at the Åkjær Estate in the 1700s not only wanted to be buried in a silk gown and nice silk stockings, she also wanted the very same stockings changed every year around Christmas.

At Rathlousdal, they buried the lord in 1681 after a sudden turn had killed him. 150 years later, during a restoration of the burial site, a twisted corpse was found - unfortunately, the lord had only been apparently dead and thus had been buried alive!

... that you can see an old bear cave in the forest west of the Rathlousdal Manor? The cave dates back to the 1800s, and Russian bears once lived here when there was a small zoo in the forest.

Would you care to dig deeper into the history of one of the manors, then we recommend that you read the book “Rathlousdal - en herregård i Odder”.

YEAR-ROUND HOLIDAYS

IN HOLIDAY HOMES

What is more ideal for indoor comfort than a holiday home with a crackling stove? Meanwhile, the family can play a game or do those other activities that there is so rarely time for during everyday life. A holiday home is the perfect setting for your holiday in Odder, regardless of the season.

Did you know...

Here, you find holiday homes that suit both hot summers and cold winters and which invite to relaxation, tranquillity and new experiences. Odder has many activities that bring out the smile on young and old faces.

A holiday home is suitable for holidays in summer, winter, spring and autumn. Book it with Feriepartner Odder-Juelsminde.

Naturally, the summer holiday must be enjoyed in a holiday home near the beach, so you can quickly cool off with a fresh dip in the sea. The windy days of autumn, on the other hand, provide ample opportunity to fly a kite or go for a walk in the woods and collect chestnuts for making chestnut animals. Once you have laced your hiking boots, we recommend exploring some of eastern Jutland most beautiful nature around Odder which can be experienced on foot and by bike. Cycling paths, country roads or forest paths quickly take you around the area and allow you to explore all corners of Odder. See walking and cycling routes on page 30 and 34. For families with small children, short trips to playgrounds or farm shops such as Fru Møllers Mølleri, Karensminde Orchard and Holtgaard are often good experiences in themselves. Here, you can set the pace yourselves and decide on the number of breaks. Bring a picnic and find a nice spot where you can sit and relax - or taste some of the local specialities. In Sondrup you can visit Øko Ged & Grønt, where the small farm dairy produces goat cheese from its own goats’ milk.

74

And if you are visiting in early July, be sure to attend Hou Harbour Festival which offers a wonderful mix of harbour fishing, sports, music, parties and entertainment. If an August holiday suits you better, there is Odder Town Fair, where you can let yourself be entertained by the big huckster’s market, in party tents around town, at the musical event “Musik under Bøgen” and at the vintage car parade.

From Odder, you can go island hopping and experience time stopping. Tunø is a car-free island with a cosy village pond and a unique church tower which, as the only one in Denmark, also functions as a lighthouse.

For kids

Once you get hungry, you can sink your teeth into delicious food from exciting eateries in

So there are unique opportunities to gather lots of good holiday memories - even if the weather does not always invite to open-air adventures.

Islands & harbours

Also, spend a day on Alrø which has delicious Danish regional dishes and the bicycle-ferry which allows you to continue your journey to Snaptun and further on towards Horsens.

Some of Jutland’s major attractions, such as Legoland, Lego House, the Prison in Horsens, and the large city of Aarhus are only a short distance away.

Active in Odder

Odder is known for its beautiful coastline with expansive, child-friendly beaches, cosy harbours, rolling grain fields, windmills and blue fjords. It is very idyllic. And the coast of the Odder area is fantastic for water sports such as kayaking, kite surfing and windsurfing.

“Inspiring 40 LEGO innovators is hard but the Faengslet prison venue certainly gave us a great start. Granted sleeping in cells was not to everyone’s taste, but a trip round the awesome museum put this into context. What really made the difference was how the team looked after us. Nothing was too much trouble or too hard. Having run venues all around the world, this is now one of my favourites.”

The very moment you check in at the prison museum, all your senses are brought into play. The various exhibitions offer you experiences for your ears, eyes, and nose. This makes a tour of the amazing building a great experience for both young and old. And this is also why the museum has won several awards for its exciting exhibitions which give you a different, thought-provoking, and magic experience. Here you get an extraordinary opportunity to get behind bars and meet former inmates as shadows on the walls, or follow an employee through the museum via interactive ID-cards.

And Fængslet really is something quite unique. No matter if you visit the hostel SleepIn, the prison museum or participate in business events or events at Fængslet, then you meet the illuminating, rough, and unpolished world which tells the story of the surroundings. The buildings’ creative murals on cell blocks and in staircases are painted by inmates, and the heavy doors and the barbed wire on top of the penitentiary gate draws your attention to the fact that this is not a place you easily escape from. There are people who have actually lived the main part of their lives behind these walls, men who were punished here, and children of inmates who at a very early age were forced to face the harsh realities of life.

Shopping

But Fængslet is something else and much more than rough walls, prison yards, and cell blocks. It is a business with five branches consisting of a museum, a conference department, a hostel, events, and an innovative environment with rental of office space and event facilities. Within all areas, the common goal is creating experiences out of the ordinary, as well as being a beacon in Horsens in the attempt to make the town something special.

NATURE AND FISHING PARK Do you need to gear down? The fresh air and the smell of nature, red cheeks, and the sense of community. You will meet all this in the back yard of the Gudenåen, and only 2.5 km from The Uncovered Bridge. This is where you find Horsens’s largest fishing park. The Nature and Fishing Park is a large nature area with meadows, small woodland, and lovely nature trails, so it is evident that you go here to explore nature. The area is also unusually rich in insects, birds, and wild life, and you can hardly avoid seeing kingfishers, swans, and deer (besides fish of course), when you come to visit. And despite the owners of the place calling themselves the River Man and the Sea Witch, there is nothing to fear here. In fact, they are so focused on creating the best possible experience for you, that they are always ready to help you find other great activities and eating and accommodation opportunities in the area. 84

The Fyelmose Nature and Fishing Park is not just one but three lakes for fishing: The Children’s Lake, the Family Lake, and the Nature Lake. Here you can catch many different kinds of trout. In the Children’s Lake, the fish may be small, but the joy of catching them the biggest of all. And the Children’s Lake is actually the only one of its kind in Denmark: it is filled with organic rainbow trouts. In the Nature Lake, the largest fish live, but the Family Lake, where the medium-sized fish live, is also something very special. Here you can walk in water up to your knees (in your waders) and stand in the reeds or fish directly into the deep from lakeshores, banks, and islands. In this way, Fyelmose is amazing for everybody who wants to be active in nature - no matter if you are a novice, intermediate, or a professional angler, or whether the entire family comes along. In fact, you can get guidance, because the Nature and Fishing Park is happy to put an assistant coach at your disposal. you have caught can be cleaned and prepared here. If you don’t like (to eat) fish, then you can also get help: from the River Man and the Sea Witch, you can buy sausages, pies, and steaks that you can put on the barbeque, so that everybody goes home happy and full.

Ecology and sustainability

At the Fyelmose Nature and Fishing Park, nature and the good experiences are in the foreground. Therefore work is continuously done to make the place even more sustainable and to further ecology, among other things, by having green operational routines and guidelines for the use and protection of the nature park, so animal wellfare is assured. To you as a guest, this not only means that you have the opportunity to catch an organic fish, you can also pamper yourself with delicious, organic seafood delicacies from the new farm shop at Fyelmose. If you would rather prepare the fish yourself, you can buy a fresh fish to take home instead.
