Myanmar Airways International CORPORATE PROFILE
Before 2001
Myanmar's original and only national airline was called Union of Burma Airways and began operations in the 1950s when the country was still known as Burma. In the early 1970s it was renamed Burma Airways Corporation and continued services under this name until 1988, when Burma was officially renamed Myanmar and the airline was renamed Myanma Airways. Myanmar Airways International (MAI), the National Flag Carrier of the Union of Myanmar, took off in August 1993, created as a joint venture between Myanma Airways and Singapore interests of Highsonic Enterprise Pte, Ltd with the support of Royal Brunei Airlines. 2001 Onwards
In January 2001, a new joint venture was formed in which Region Air Myanmar (HK) Ltd took a strategic 49% stake, a local businessman through his company Zan Co took an 11% share, and Myanma Airways retained 40%. In February 2007, Myanma Airways took a majority share of 51% while the management of MAI and Region Air Myanmar (HK) Ltd took a 49% stake. Since March 2009, state-owned Myanma Airways has held a 20% share and the private sector has held a majority share of 80% . With a new management team, new Airbus A320-231 aircraft, an all-expatriate cockpit crew, better-trained flight attendants, and Myanmar Civil Aviation Requirements and International Civil Aviation Organisation operating standards, this was the beginning of a successful new era for our national airline. MAI, with its standards of quality and safety, has recently able to satisfy the standards of the Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP). MAI became the international airline of Myanmar, with regular flights between Yangon (the commercial capital of Myanmar) and Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Gaya, Siem Reap and Guang Zhou, as well as between Bangkok to Singapore. Although MAI (8M) is a small airline, it is a member of the IATA Clearing House (ICH) and a partner of the IATA MITA system. Through MITA, we have international and SPA agreements with many international airlines. Our aircraft are operated by an internationally experienced team of skilled aviation personnel. The safety and comfort of our passengers has always been our first priority. Therefore, we have been able to maintain 100% safety and remain accident-free in our aviation history and record books.

Ambassador to the Land of Enchantment
Our logo Pyinsa Rupa, which comprises the Pali words pyinsa, meaning “five”, and rupa, meaning “physical beauties”, is the name given to a mythical animal that Myanmar artists and artisans have been using wing over the centuries as a decorative motif in their works. Pyinsa Rupa combines the most striking features of five different animals – the trunk of the Elephant, the head of the Lion, the antlers and legs of the Deer, the wings of the mythical Hintha bird, and the body and tail of the Nga gyin fish (gudgeon). Thus Pyinsa Rupa has features of land creatures, a winged creature and a water creature.
As Myanmar’s premier international carrier, MAI is delighted to fly visitors to the enchanting land of Myanmar. Glazed Earthen Pots Myanmar generally fills glazed earthen pots with water or oil, but they are also used for interior and exterior decoration at both homes and hotels. Potters also make smaller water pots for household use, in addition to the large glazed earthen pots. Glazed vases with floral arabesque drawings are also produced locally. The glazed earthen pots piled upon the banks of the Ayeyarwady river prove that glazed earthen pots are still part and parcel of Myanmar society today.
The Unique Style of Kachin Jingphaw Dress Kachin nationals such as jing phaw, Saiwa, Lawa, Lachate, Rawun and Lisu inhabit the region together. The significances of Jingphaw traditional dress is found in the adornment of silver symbols along the back and front, along the wrist line, rings made of cane are carried at the ankle and traditionally woven red stockings are also incorporated in the dress.
Myanma Traditional Tayaw-Kinbun Shampoo Myanma traditional Tayaw-Kinbun shampoo is a bio-herbal which is extracted from natural resources. The Tayaw is a small tree or shrub, and its botanical name is Grewia Polygama. It is valued for making hair dark, soft and shiny. Kinbun’s botanical name is Acacia cocinna, and its fluid can cleanse dirt from hair. It has no chemical additives, so it can be used safely on all types of hair. Traditional Tayaw-Kinbun shampoo is easy to make. First, dried and hardened dark-brown Kinbun beans are boiled, cooled down, and filtered. Tayaw bark is stripped, beaten flat and soaked in water. The thinner the bark, the foamier it will be. The shampoo is ready to be used after the Tayaw is mixed with the Kinbun fluid. Tayaw-Kinbun Shampoo sachet packets are also available in every market.

Artist Zaw Mong
The peculiar process of watercolours - the tiny pools of water bonding their respective colours onto the blankness of the paper - has influenced the artist to title this series of watercolour paintings “Paper Pond”; he imagines each trail of water and colour left by the brush to be part of the pond that forms on the paper. Moreover, the image of a pond (and pond-scrutiny) also evokes feelings of a private place teeming with memories, a body of water upon which we often gaze - the pond becomes the physical embodiment of the act of self-reflection, our memories taking life in its depths.

uddhists in Myanmar celebrate a religious festival on a monthly basis, and two of the most important are the Light Festivals of October and November. In October, the Thadingyut Light Festival marks the end of Lent which began in July, and the end of monsoon season, which began in May. In November, the Tazaung Daing Light Festival heralds the celebration of the Sulamuni Pagoda in the sky, enshrined with a hair of the Buddha and built by the King of the Celestials. Devout Buddhists from the Shan, Palaung, Danu, Taungthu, Inthar and Pa O ethnic groups of Taunggyi and surrounding areas celebrate the Kahtein ritual with all their hearts and souls. Taunggyi, which aptly means Big Mountain, is situated high in the hills of Southern Shan State, of which it is the capital city. All over the country, communities gather at their local monasteries to let fly gigantic balloons fuelled with hot air generated by burning oil lamps attached under the opening at the bottom, as symbols of homage to the pagoda in

builders, a heartbreak and humiliation never to be forgotten. The balloons are filled while pegged down, so that they slowly fill up, and, when inflated to their greatest extent, rise to struggle free of the anchoring ropes. Everyone holds their breath as each is set free to rise, first slowly, and then swiftly, gaining momentum as it flies up and away into the night sky. Soon the dark velvet blue of the heavens is filled with a multitude of bobbing lights, most of them trailing tails of light shooting off fireworks from time to time. It is a breathtaking sight for the people who have come from far and near to witness the amazing show, and also for the artisans who lovingly created these gifts to the Sulamuni Pagoda. The Shan Hills are full of amazing sights and sites, including the twothousand 17th century shrines of Kekku, a short drive east from Taungyi. These beautifully decorated shrines were lost to the outside world in the deep jungle for several centuries and only rediscovered in the mid 1990s. Globalization appears to be a process which accelerates some forms of urbanization. Urbanization helps Southeast Asian capitals to achieve the standard of global cities, and some capitals are now in a position to compete with the Western metropolis. For the capitals' development, their nations’ natural resources and tourism play important roles. By these means, ASEAN States generate foreign exchange revenue, and so globalization has also helped to promote the diversity and richness of the various cultures and peoples in Southeast Asia. ASEAN tourism is still performing well, and continues to grow; current trends will further enhance the development of ASEAN states and capitals, creating facilities and attractions at world-class standards.

His expertise made him acutely aware of their significance and being different from amphibole jade or nephrite. He thus named those minerals jadeite. The major jadeite mines, or the home of jadeite, lies in the area between the Chindwin and Uru rivers. The most important source of superior jadeite is close to Hpakant, a small town, about 16 km from the southeast of theTawhmaw region located along the Uru river. Hpakant, even though it is small, is known as ‘‘The Jade Land," and it is also situated in the middle-north of Myanmar, about 420km north of Mandalay. Hpakant has now become a crucial point of jade trading and virtually all top-quality jadeite comes from Hpakant. Myanmar jadite is considered to be larger in size, superior in quality, and higher in price than any other jade in the world.

The Central Committee of Organizing Myanmar Gems Emporiums of the Ministry of Mines of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar has been holding Myanmar Gems emporiums in 1964. The Organizing Committee has organized emporiums 47 times since 1964. The 2010 midyear Myanmar Gems Emporium was held at Maniyadana Jade Hall near the Gems Museum in Nay Pyi Daw from 17 to 29 November, drawing the attention of 6,750 foreign gems dealers who bought 7,784 lots of jade. It was the first emporium held in Nay Pyi Daw, the capital of Myanmar. The majority of gem dealers were Chinese, and they have imported jadeite since the 18th century. Only jadeite has value as a gem material in and of itself. It is considered ‘The stone of Heaven’ and it provides a bridge between Myanmar and the world.

Basic Eye Care Eyes are one of the most important organs in the human body and vision is one of the most wonderful gifts. But often many people neglect the importance of eye care and do not pay proper attention. Being aware of the importance of protecting your vision can help you to avoid problems with it in the future. The Sun: One of the greatest enemies of our eyes is the sun. Eyes are damaged by UV rays coming from the sun. Sunglasses should always be worn in daylight hours when you are outside, and you need to be sure that the sunglasses you choose offer UV ray protection. There are many sunglasses sold which are just tinted glass and do not really protect your eyes. Check the label on your sunglasses before
you buy them. Excessive eye usage: Reading, working on the computer and watching television really can harm your vision. When you are doing any of these things it is important to take frequent breaks and look at things farther away from time to time to offer your eyes minimal fatigue. Eye Checks: Frequent check-ups with your optician will help keep your eyes healthy. Often, your prescription will change in a short period of time and it is important to keep on top of it to avoid further damage to your eyes. People with obesity or who are diabetic should have more routine checkups since they are more likely to develop certain eye diseases. Eye Exercises are needed to keep your eyes fit. Step 1. Sit down and relax. Breathe normally, and look at a spot about the bridge of you nose. Keep looking at the spot for a count of five and then relax the eyes . This exercise will ease the stress, tension and as well as relax your eyes . Step 2. Sit down and relax and look

Do this exercise three time. Step 3. Sit up straight and look down. Slowly inhale and start rolling your eyes to the right and then to the top, in a circular movement. When your eyes have reached the top , looking towards your eyebrows, start exhaling while moving your eyes left and downwards in a circular movement . Repeat three times.
