The current economic urban model generates static and rigid spaces. This denies citizens’ participation in public space and creates “non-places” like shopping areas, decorative streets, and sculptural squares with useless furniture. In order to promote the cities into the global market, our public space is becoming a purchase object uninhabitable within a showcase. Our project tries to recover the one-to-one relationships and the participation and playing site.

public space is understood as the exchange,

Static and scuptural space ≠ participatory and playfull space.

Traditional games are free activities where to play, to learn and to enjoy is the same thing. This games are also social activities witch understand the community as an important part of each individual life. Each game has rules to achieve a goal but it´s only an excuse for playing. The main aim is to stimulate the imagination by using a repetitive magical story creating a platform for individual and social learning.

Culture

We understand as something inherent in human being witch pass on from generation to generation by repetitive habits called customs. This creates a fragile temporary network where language, art, game, folklore and

tradition are mingled, generating a magical atmosphere. It

becomes non-places in places.

Game is older than culture, since animals did not wait for men to be taught how to play. Game sets itself specifically in each culture using public space, streets, and squares. This also generates horizontal collective relationships and

Homo=Ludens.

allows the spontaneity of causal exchanges between players; The cultural body, As a result, we understand game as essential part of our culture and a good training for not keep being just passive spectators and consumers of our cities. The game generates horizontal collective relations and allows the spontaneity of the exchanges, causal relationships between players, non-linear changes..

The game draws us, makes us engage in what we are doing stop being passive spectators and consumers.

Each game has its cultural particularities closely related with a specific site. We have studied this relation and specifically, Portuguese traditional games. We mainly take into account how the game interacts with the public space, how the action is performed in public and the items needed for playing. We identify four games categories:

Ground games: the action takes place mainly over the ground. String games: the rope is the main element for game developing. Items games: the game needs specific items. Air games: suspended by auxiliary elements seems to hover in the air.

TRADITIONAL GAMES/Urban study

We have forgotten how to run and how to enjoy our public space from square to square. Abandoned spaces, saturated pseudo-public spaces and regular tours, are our nowadays cities. We gaze the situation like passive spectators.

We run and jump because we are playing. Why do we play where nobody can see us? ; What are we hiding? ; What are we protecting us from? While we play we transform the existing space.

Playing on Squares, Courtyards, Gardens and Parks

Playing in streets!

Playing in streets. How are our spaces? How are our playgrounds? We play on the floor, hanging items, with balls or over a hard or soft texture.

Sometimes we just play! Alone or in group! with a rope, a ball or our mate´s hands,...

We propose a blackout! Turning on afterwards, a magical GAMEARテウS,

We propose night communities Urban-games, rediscovering tradition and taking care of our surrounding. Urban games are distributed in the city of Guimarテ」es, turning around public space into a participatory and active site, filled of life, light and dreams., This generates a collective network ... all through the night in a moon spell.

Long time ago, stars enjoyed themselves playing during nighttime. They used to

watch children playing in the streets, imitating them, running and jumping around space. Turning into shooting stars they followed their own flow. Stars learned how to jump the rope, play hide and seek and many others games ending up happy and exhausted at dawn.

One night, stars, tired and bored of seeing how people played less and less in the streets and spent more and more time at home, decided going down to earth to explain children how, who now are grown-ups, used to play in good old times. They turned into lighting objects recovering old names told, long time ago by those who are now parents and grandparents. They came inside the houses enlightening inside space and waking up all the children, who excited, ran out to the streets and started to play with them instinctively. Stars lighted up everything in a shooting star shower and meandering along streets in a flood of light. Adults, seeing their children playing, remembered when they were kids and soon joined them. Thus the city recover its soul thanks to the stars, which since then, decided to come down every year to ensure people never forget to play again.

Each game has a web space where participants can chat with others participants, interact with the game, share impressions, and upload photos and videos on real-time.

Largo da Oliveira SQUARE We Choose this site because it has all the Characteristics we need, and also it has the Night Mueum.e.

Da bilha/ HaNG UP BuGS

Hung up game keeps the wealth of empires, the secrets of the gods, the things above, and only one sinner can break it and bring this treasure to the Earth‌ It is a collective thought; a public party on the street, a popular feeling. It may be publicly displayed in a festive fun, breaking taboos and putting our feet back on the ground.

Da bilha/ HaNG UP BuGS PLAYING SPACE: Is the atmosphere of our streets and squares . MATERIALS: Rope /Support/Bags/Hitting sticks/Stuffing ACTION PLAN: During one week the paper bag will stay switch on, hanging up and getting bigger by the energy, the habits and the life of the city. One special day, the catharsis day, everything will come back to the Earth. Lighting bracelets and other items will be collected by people. Next the light will spread through the street of the public space.

corda / jump rope The first jump ropes are said to be made of bamboo and vines found in jungles. Jumping along with these items led to what is today referred to as jump roping. Some say it originated in China, while Western versions are said to have originated around 1600 B.C. in Egypt. The first real evidence of jump rope as an activity is seen in medieval paintings. Children rolled hoops and jumped were some of the first to jump rope in America which brought about the variation of jump rope called “Double Dutch. In the 1940s and 1950’s jump rope became the game of choice for inner city children because any one could play and it only required a rope. The 1970s brought an increased interest to jump rope as a way to achieve physical fitness and health. Since then, jump rope events and programs have emerged and jumping rope has become part of many different exercise training regimens.

corda / jump rope RULES : Usually one or more participants jump over a rope which is rotated so that it passes under their feet and over their head. In the single game, the same person is who spins and jumps the rope. In the group game, there are at least three people that are involved in the game, two that turn the rope while the third jumps. Is easy to jump while the beat of popular songs. We propose a musical performance (reinterpreted Portuguese folk songs) to skip the ropes. DUSK ADAPTATION: During the day the ropes won´t shine and will wake up while the sun is setting. MATERIALS: Rhythmical music: musician ropes. ACTION PLAN: Ropes will be integrated in the city as an installation. The game starts with the music and the installation would be unwrapped. The action will connect with the game.

macaca / Hopscotch There are apocryphal stories of hopscotch being invented by Romans or Chinese, but the first recorded reference to hopscotch dates back to 1677. “The time when schoolboys should play at Scotch-hoppers.” “Lawyers and Physicians have little to do this month, so they may (if they will) play at Scotch-hoppers.”

Since the game was known and popular in the seventeenth century, it is logical to assume that it existed at least a few decades or perhaps even many centuries before 1677…

macaca / Hopscotch RULES : The first player tosses the marker (typically a stone, coin or bean bag) into the first square. The marker must land completely within the designated square and without touching a line or bouncing out. The player then hops through the course, skipping the square with the marker in it. Single squares must be hopped on one foot. For the first single square, either foot may be used. Side by side squares are straddled, with the left foot landing in the left square, and the right foot landing in the right square. Optional squares marked “Safe”, “Home”, or “Rest” are neutral squares, and may be hopped through in any manner without penalty. After hopping into the “Safe”, “Home”, or “Rest” the player must then turn around and return through the course (square 9, then squares 7 & 8, next square 6 and so forth) on one or two legs depending on the square until he or she reaches the square with their marker. DUSK ADAPTATION: During the day she doesn´t exist but while the night is coming the playing lines appear, showing the geometry of the new pavement or the prints of past events in this specific place. MATERIALS: Phosphorescent tape, rolling phosphorescent plastic sheets. ACTION PLAN: The lightning items will be switch on and the game will start at that precise moment in different locations.
