What a year it has been, Bitcoin continues to steam ahead, the Rand despite the downgrades is holding its own and property continues to deliver strong returns. All eyes are on the ruling parties conference, the result of which will have a profound effect on the direction the country takes. Interest rates over the past few years have been low which has been able to sustain the property market at a steady pace and even though we have seen a rise this year it has not been significant enough to affect the property market in a negative way. I see the year ahead continue very much along the same path as 2017 where there are still good opportunities for buyers if they are patient and prepared to shop around. The buy to let market has remained steady for the past few years and according to FNB, these buyers have made up around 8.25% of the market since 2010, which is a considerable drop off from the highs in 2004 of 25% of the buyer market. It is therefore highly advisable that shoppers who used their credit cards to buy presents and goods during the last month to keep an eye on their financial transaction information during this period. The fact of the matter is that cybercriminals do exist and they are extremely cunning in their ways. More so, at this time of the year, they are that much more on the lookout for vulnerable online shoppers. But by following the precautionary measures described above and always listening to your intuition about situations that make you uncomfortable, you can prepare and protect yourself adequately for the festive season’s online shopping extravaganza.
