Energy-Saving tips to consider for your home Energy saving remains high on the list of priorities for homeowners. This is even further amplified with the newly approved increase on electricity tariffs for the next three years. With NERSA moving to approve the 9.41% hike in tariffs for the year 2019, homeowners will even further be looking at ways to ensure their home is an energy-efficient as can be. Mike Greeff, CEO of Greeff Christie’s International Real Estate advises homeowners to look at the silver lining in the event that electricity prices increase. “With homeowners looking to pay more after the price hikes, it is worthwhile they attempt to do what they can do to keep their monthly electricity consumption as low as possible. It may require some time, and even some money to implement but once this has been done, homeowners are sure to see the benefits of these measures.” 1. Unplug unused plugs and chargers

Swop out the power-heavy appliances for energy-efficient ones Appliances are known to take up plenty of power and increase electricity bills these can include washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers but when shopping for these appliances be sure to check for ones that have shorter wash cycles and have eco-efficient settings to reduce the amount of power usage for your household altogether. Power heavy appliances can take obscene amounts of electricity and will drain power from your system like water running from a tap. Always look out for appliances that carry an A or B energy rating.
As your geyser warms and cools through the day, it loses heat unnecessarily and diminishes its energy efficiency. Lost heat means extra electricity needed to reheat the geyser to the pre-set temperature. By using geyser blankets or insulating your geyser in another efficient way, you will trap heat around the geyser thereby reducing the number of reheating cycles in a day. Another geyser related tip would be to lower the temperature of the water. Reducing the geyser temperature by just 10 degrees Celsius can reduce your electricity usage by around 10kwh per month. 5. Automate your lighting and equipment
Outside lighting and equipment can be set to a photocell that turns lights on at night and off at sunrise. Outside lights are often forgotten and left on throughout the day. This avoids electricity being squandered by perimeter and outdoor lighting. Pool pumps and equipment can be set to run on a timer to avoid prolonged energy use. Using automated switches and timers not only saves electricity but prolongs the life of your equipment and fittings. Saving energy is not just about saving money. 4. Insulate your geyser
