CHILDHOOD AND YOUTH STUDIES

OUR COURSES — Children, Young People & Families BA (Hons) This degree requires you to carefully consider what childhood, youth and family mean in contemporary society. — Early Childhood Studies BA (Hons) You will gain specialist knowledge about the learning, development and life experiences of children under seven years of age, which creates a firm foundation for a variety of future career options. There is a strong learning and development strand running through the degree, but this is enhanced by exploring the wider social factors that can have a significant effect upon young children growing up in the world today.

— Youth Work & Community Development with JNC Professionally Qualified Status BA (Hons)* This programme is designed for those who are ready to tackle the challenges facing young people today. Youth and community workers have the power to bring about change through facilitating young people’s personal and social education. Developed in partnership with employers, key themes within the degree are social justice and responsibility, employability, professional formation through substantial credit-bearing placementbased learning, and reflective and research-based practice.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS AND PLACEMENTS Students on these programmes are regularly in contact with relevant local services to keep them informed of volunteering opportunities. We have links with York City Council, with students working with foster carers and the Men into Childcare steering group. All Year 2 students on these programmes undertake a placement module which develops their employability and gives an opportunity to gain real workplace experience. Previous placements have included Refugee Action York, North Yorkshire County Council Education Authority and in libraries, schools and colleges.

100% of Children, Young People & Families students think that staff make the subject interesting. (National Student Survey 2018)

My research is around women with drug and alcohol problems who are also mothers. We are looking at the support they receive and the additional stigmatisation they experience as a result. I am interested in social justice and the opportunity to discuss the impact of stereotyping and stigmatisation on a group of women who are at risk of losing their children, not because of their alcohol and drug misuse, but the way society views them and the consequent paucity of provision is really important. These women need support and awareness needs to be raised. In the modules I teach on we look at topics through multiple lenses and with the benefit of varied experiences, discussing social policy and its impact on vulnerable groups. I want my research to raise students’ awareness of these issues and challenge their assumptions. Caroline Leeson Associate Professor, School of Education
