Creative Writing is taught by a team of award-winning and acclaimed writers and helps to foster skills that matter in the workplace as much as on the page. Communication, creativity, reflection, analysis and collaboration are at the heart of this degree. York Centre for Writing acts as a hub for a number of exciting writing events, projects and publications in collaboration with Valley Press, York Literature Festival and other community partners. We have previously welcomed authors such as Kathleen Jamie, Sarah Hall, Michel Faber, Daljit Nagra and Margaret Atwood, who have inspired students and members of the local community alike.
MODULE IN THE SPOTLIGHT: WORKING WITH WORDS: PUBLISHING AND PERFORMANCE
Beyond the Walls is an anthology, published annually, collecting short fiction, poetry, and other new writing from graduating BA and MA students in Creative Writing. The anthology is edited, designed and published entirely by Undergraduate students on the Working with Words: Publishing and Performance module. Launch events and readings are organised by students studying the module each spring. The aim of this work-related module is to develop an understanding of the relationship between creative writing practices and employability in the creative industries by offering students an opportunity to explore and engage with methods and means of literary publishing, production and performance.
The best things about the course were the additional events that were put on and the inclusion of the work experience module. I really enjoyed all elements of my course, but it was these events with authors and publishers that really inspired me. One of my tutors told us that we should make the most of all the events at York St John because we would never have quite the same experience again and he was right! Since working in publishing I have been to several book launches, author parties and a couple of International Book Fairs, but I still miss the events at York St John because they were so well tailored to aspiring writers and publishers.
