Your work will culminate in exhibiting at our annual degree show, a fantastic opportunity to showcase your work to regional industry partners and businesses, as well as celebrating your achievement with friends and family.
Scott Halewood Graphic Design BA (Hons) Studying Graphic Design at York St John University led me to discover who I am as a person and with the help of the tutors and people close to me I was able to really push myself. The University has always been so helpful and the academic staff in the department really do want to help. One of the best moments came in my third year when I was introduced to the print room and one of my tutors went above and beyond to help me, and taught me so much. York St John University teaches you who you are and what you want to be.
OUR COURSES DIGITAL DESIGN — Animation BA (Hons) If you’re a visual artist with a love of storytelling and communication then an Animation degree is your gateway to a diverse and exciting range of careers. You could turn your hand to games development, illustration, web design, visual effects work, advertising or film direction.
— Games Design BA (Hons) Let games industry professionals teach you how to design and develop computer games from concept art through to asset creation, animation and level design, leading to fully playable games. This programme will unlock your potential through an exploration of the ways in which design, storytelling, art and coding come together to create unique and memorable games.
— Graphic Design BA (Hons) Learn the fundamental principles of visual language, putting these into practice through a series of practical projects. You will develop the skills, techniques and processes that embody contemporary graphic design and use a range of mediums and platforms to develop creative design solutions.
3D DESIGN — Furniture Design BA (Hons) This programme shares many of its design modules with Product Design, but allows you to specialise in the design and production of furniture. There are two main pathways, allowing you to specialise either in industrial furniture production or on the smaller-scale, more bespoke end of the market. Both options encourage you to explore your creativity while building your practical and theoretical skills.
— Interior Design BA (Hons) Interior designers apply creative solutions to spatial and architectural design challenges in a huge range of contexts. From the smaller units approached in your first year to the more ambitious residential or business designs of your final project, you will discover inventive ways to approach these challenges.
— Product Design BA (Hons) From the bespoke to the mass-produced, this degree is all about creativity and invention. We will give you the technical skills to turn the product innovations of your imagination into reality. You will graduate with the theoretical and practical expertise to make you employable in a broad sector of the creative industry.

OUTSTANDING FACILITIES York St John University is continuously investing in facilities for our Design students, in both 3D and digital design. These include two large computer suites dedicated for the use of Design students, an outstanding large design space, machinery and workshop areas, traditional letterpress and print studio, 3D print and computer-aided design (CAD) rooms and a newly-developed library and learning centre which manages Adobe and Autodesk software across the campus. The majority of workplaces are accessible 24/7, enabling students to progress their work effectively in a well-maintained creative environment. The workshop stores provide students with materials and equipment to support their development and final presentation work. We also have access to industry software, as well as gaming rigs, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology, motion capture facilities and industry games engines.
BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS Field trips are a way of broadening students’ experiences and are a great extension to the curriculum, enabling you to see contemporary design first hand. We also use these visits as a chance to begin projects, stimulate critical thinking and inspire creative practice. In recent years students have visited Barcelona, Berlin and Prague as well as museums and galleries across the UK.
WORK-BASED LEARNING Theory is backed up by practical workshops and kept relevant through real-world application. Competitions, client projects and other opportunities to showcase your work will allow you to build a professional portfolio to start your career.
INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS The Design Department at York St John University has well-established links with leading companies across the region and within the UK. Our students get to work on live projects with these businesses as their clients and gain a breadth of real-world experience from this. Successful partnerships have included Hiscox Insurance, where one of our alumni won ÂŁ2,500 in the Hiscox Design Competition. With the BBC a group of students worked to develop a range of infographics which represented poverty and change in the current climate. Our Graphic Design students developed concept ideas and graphic artwork for new promotion for The Woodland Trust, winning a prize for best design. With Priestmangoode, our Interior Design, Graphic Design and Product Design students worked in collaboration to produce brand, product and interior spaces for budget airlines. As a result of this partnership one of our students was offered a work placement. Central to the programmes is the continuing development and enhancement of strong and fulfilling relationships with businesses and employers. We believes that these important connections will significantly enhance your future career prospects.
