WORDS MATTER

Here at York St John, our approach to literature is simple: words matter. Words shape the world we live in – books have changed the world and will continue to do so – and the connections between the written page and the concerns of the ‘real’ world are a crucial part of our work. Our popular Words Matter blog celebrates our philosophy. The blog is written by both staff and students, and posts include articles, reviews, reports of events and trips, staff profiles, career advice, reading recommendations and much more. 97%

of 2017 English Literature graduates were in employment or further study within six months of graduating, with 85% of these in professional or managerial roles. (Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey 2017)

I came to York St John as a mature student after many years out of education and I couldn’t have chosen a better place to resume my university career. The close-knit environment and the community spirit of this University inspired me, encouraged me and empowered me. I have improved as a student and as a researcher, and I have a clearer idea of the academic path I want to follow. I overcame my fear of speaking in public and I don’t see the fact that English is not my first language as a problem or a limit anymore. Studying English Literature & Creative Writing at York St John University has been an invaluable academic experience, but also a life experience that has made me aware of my potential, of my critical voice and of my place in the world. I am proud of myself for having worked hard and I’m grateful for all the support I have received, because I would never have managed to achieve a First Class degree without the continuous intellectual stimulus and the encouragement of the academic staff and of my fellow students.
