MEDIA PRODUCTION: JOURNALISM We will help you to become the best journalist you can be. If you want to be a news journalist, but you also want to write about sport, or games, or film, or fashion, or whatever it is that you’re passionate about, we can teach you to do that too. Our Broadcast Journalism Training Council accredited course will teach you to write for any news media platform – from TV to YouTube, social media to magazines and podcasting to radio. And we won’t stop there. We will get you thinking about where journalism might go next and prepare you for a future in which news stories might be experienced in VR or played as games. As well as dedicated newsrooms and studios, you will have access to specialist facilities and teaching across digital media. You will get real-world, industry-led experience producing work for web and social media platforms, TV and radio newsdays, videos, short films, podcasts, magazines and multimedia packages.

AWARDS AND EVENTS Through our exclusive partnership with the BAFTA-qualifying Aesthetica Short Film Festival we host a series of masterclasses on campus, giving our students access to industry experts with specialisms in everything from documentary and journalism to cinematography, editing and directing. We host a student awards night at the end of the course, attended and judged by industry practitioners, giving and extra opportunity to gain valuable contacts across the media industries.
REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE From your first year you will be producing work for real for our news website The Yorkie, YouTube or social media platforms. Each year you will build on your live production skills through industry-standard news days, filming in studios and on location and turning material around to deadlines. Our students regularly work on live projects. Journalism students have worked with Aesthetica magazine, BBC Radio York and YorkMix as part of their work placements. York St John University stood out to me from the moment I arrived on an Open Day. Everything is so cosy, welcoming and homely. I got such a great vibe from the members of staff and students. The course content really interested me and I wanted to be a part of it. I decided to study Journalism at university because the wide range of platforms used within media provides unique opportunities to use my imagination. I enjoy expressing my ideas and opinions creatively, and this course gave me those opportunities. So far my favourite part has been gathering stories and interviewing people for my storytelling module. I got a real thrill from finding and discovering stories to compile for my portfolio.
