LANGUAGES & LINGUISTICS

LANGUAGES & LINGUISTICS By studying Languages & Linguistics at York St John University you will be joining a lively, inclusive community of linguists. You will benefit from opportunities for trips and study abroad to Japan, Poland, USA, Korea and Spain, guest lectures by international experts, community-based field work, student societies and lots of other fun events. Our lecturers are undertaking world-leading research, often together with their students, on the part played by language in homophobic bullying in schools, how children learn to read, relationships between parents and children in multilingual families, the pronunciation of Japanese by speakers of English, dialects of English and British Sign Language in Yorkshire and the North East and Deaf identities amongst many other subjects. We will offer you opportunities to contribute to our research projects and support you to design your own. By the end of your degree you will be telling us things about language(s) that we didn’t already know! We look forward to welcoming you. Dr Rachel Wicaksono Head of School, Languages & Linguistics

I chose York St John because the languages and linguistics staff seemed so passionate about their subjects and were so welcoming and accommodating to all of my questions. I’ve found them to be some of the most supportive, and funny people, and it’s made a really positive effect on my willingness to participate and get involved in extra-curricular things. The course catered amazingly to my career prospects in TESOL whilst still allowing me to explore and try other specialised areas in my module choices. Learning the basic structural aspects of language, such as grammar and phonetics, has really helped to build my confidence and knowledge of these areas, which is something that is absolutely necessary in my future career as a teacher of English to speakers of other languages. However, having also taken modules such as Theories and Methodologies in TESOL, Language and Identities, and language, gender, and sexuality, I have gained so much knowledge surrounding the potential background roles of a good teacher, as a support system for students and an individual who can help to promote individuality and difference. I like to think that my study of these modules, alongside the structural components will help me to become the best teacher I can be, as well as a more wellrounded person.
