DATA SCIENCE BSc (HONS) Data Science is the science of the future. Data underpins all aspects of our lives already and will be at the heart of all future innovation. The potential benefits of the information that is constantly gathered are enormous but only if we have the ability to sort, analyse and find patterns in it. Data Science is the set of theoretical frameworks with practical tools and techniques used to unpick data and find the story behind the numbers. Our Data Science degree will equip you with the mindset, tools and techniques of a cutting-edge data scientist, to open up the world of data to you and give you the skills needed to turn raw data into something powerful and profound. The programme is very hands-on and will equip you to tackle data science questions independently. This is an exciting and emerging field with applications across almost every industry or aspect of life. Whether it is forecasting the spread of disease, predicting pedestrian flow at gigs and festivals, designing user-friendly websites, or preventing insurance fraud - data science has the right tools and our graduates will have many doors open to them. If you like statistics, mathematics, computer science, creative problem solving and communication, then this is the course for you!

MATHEMATICS BSc (HONS) Mathematics is the global language that we use to describe the world. The reach of mathematics is enormous – it underpins all aspects of life, including transport, shopping, physics, architecture, insurance, music and ecology. Interdisciplinary applications of mathematics are the future. Mathematical scientists therefore find occupations in all walks of life, such as the financial sector, start-ups, industrially applied maths, logistics, teaching and government departments or charities. They are highly valued for their creativity, analytical and logical mindset, questioning of assumptions and ability to make robust logical predictions that can be tested. Mathematics broadly encompasses the traditional areas of analysis, algebra and statistics, and more recently has expanded to include complex systems modelling and big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence. We will cover all of these areas in our course, discussing pure and applied aspects. We will develop rigorous, robust and reproducible tools and techniques, and a lot of our activities will be hands-on and application-focused, preparing you perfectly for future employment by developing your independence alongside your mathematical and computational skills.

Some of the things I find really interesting may seem very different but are actually very related, such as virus structure and strange higher-dimensional geometry. Seeing the commonalities in the mathematical structures underneath often allows you to solve seemingly very different problems. Rather than just one thing at a time, growth happens in many directions simultaneously and our mathematical sciences courses are sprinkled with applications in biology, music, physics, sports science, fake news and medieval science!
