Our students attend Royal Television Society industry masterclasses and events, including the Yorkshire Centre Student Awards, where films by our students have regularly won awards judged by industry professionals. We also host an awards night for final year students attended and judged by industry practitioners.

For most of the last ten years, my research has revolved around transnational cinemas and particularly the global circulation of Japanese cult cinema outside Japan. The project I’ve been working on most recently has been about giant monsters movie (known in Japan as kaijū eiga). While these films seem less than serious, I think it’s important to treat popular culture as equal to that of high culture, and especially what it can teach socially, politically and culturally. As we live in a more connected world than ever before, I’ve always seen transnational cinema as the most vital expression of different aspects of globalisation. As my current study develops, we plan to integrate some data from primary studies, and students can get involved as researchers on the project. Our students always question the nature of what we do. Since I teach production, with an academic background in film studies, I always feel like I need to be on my toes, up to date with what’s going in film culture and industries to put knowledge into a relevant context. At its best, teaching is a dialogue, and when students question the nature of knowledge, it brings the best out of all of us. Dr Steve Rawle, Associate Professor in Media Production

REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE

Our students have visited the Camerimage film festival in Poland, enjoying sessions with big names such as David Lynch and Lana Wachowski. They have also explored the set of ITV’s Victoria at nearby Church Fenton. Selected students also take part in an annual NBCUniversal pitching competition in London by special invitation.

Our students frequently work on live projects – including filming Red Nose Day, reporting on Fashion City York events, and pitching to digital media agencies. Through our industry contacts, students have gained work placements at the BBC, Emmerdale, True North, Orillo Films and many other organisations. Our partnership with Screen Yorkshire also means you will be based right at the heart of the country’s fastest growing film and TV production hub.
