They work across a variety of specialisms, including the statutory health and social care services, voluntary, charitable, independent and private organisations.

FUNDING Health Education England will continue to fund all placement and travel costs for each student. There will be a £300 payment upfront to the student and additional expenses can then be claimed back from Health Education England. Your Uniform and DBS checks will be funded by the University.

COMPULSORY PRACTICE PLACEMENT Occupational Therapy students are required to complete a minimum of 1,000 hours of practice placement during their training. We have partnerships that facilitate practice placements in a variety of clinical settings across the NHS, social care, private and voluntary sectors. The geographical location of these placements also vary; from the Yorkshire and Humber region to international placements in countries such as Australia, Uganda, Malta, France and Portugal. We also support ‘Role Emerging’ placements, where students work in non-traditional occupational therapy settings. Throughout all practice placements support is provided by the practice placement educator and Occupational Therapy lecturers.
I graduated in 2017 and now work as an Outreach Occupational Therapist in for Tunaweza Children’s Centre in Uganda, dealing with children with autism. My greatest ambition is to open my own rehabilitation centres in Uganda and Kenya that provides all therapies to children, but also raises awareness of the different learning disabilities that can affect people. York St John gave me a platform to explore occupational therapy on a wider scale. I had the opportunity to interact with our brilliant lecturers that have so much expertise. Our assignments prepared me to critically analyse cases in my workplace and to implement an outreach programme focused on occupational therapy in mainstream schools. Tunaweza is currently one of the only centres in Uganda to have this implemented; and I used one of my third year models to help achieve this.
