INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS & POLITICS

POLITICS Politics at York St John University is about more than the sound and fury of the daily headlines. It examines the points where power, principle and policy intersect and gets to grips with the practical implications of some of the most pressing questions of our time. How should the state respond to the challenge of planetary climate change? How are new communications technologies changing the way we engage with politics? What are the new horizons for social justice? And how might we imagine ‘the good society’ in an era of globalisation? These questions, along with many more, are addressed on these degree programmes. Our Politics degrees cover a wide range of themes and approaches which will be examined with increasing depth as you progress through the programme. You will learn the skills of political analysis, exploring complex and contested definitions and develop a rich understanding of political issues through interdisciplinary explorations. You will develop a fundamental understanding of the institutions and processes of both democratic and non-democratic modern states. This will include a focus on the domestic government and politics of the UK whilst an international exploration will provide a comparative perspective. Going beyond local and national level analysis, you will explore politics from a global perspective. AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT A defining element of International Relations and Politics at York St John is our focus on authentic assessment. Our aim is to assess students in a way that is a) developmental – feeding forward rather than just testing knowledge at a given point – and b) grounded in real-world work contexts that graduates may find themselves in, while also keeping it relevant to the academic subject. This means that students may find themselves writing party manifestos, ministerial briefing papers, biographies, academic blogs, designing and delivering live and recorded presentations, as well as more tradition essay-style assessments. Exams are a thing of the past!
