SPORT

SPORT At York St John University we believe sport should be a vehicle for positive social change. Our approach will be apparent to you in everything we do – what we teach, what we research and how we practise sport. We are interested in helping athletes perform better, recover faster and train more effectively. However, we are also interested in how we can use sport to challenge social inequality and prejudice, and how we can ensure that everyone benefits from sport regardless of their background. We are looking for students who share our values and aspire to change both the world and their community through sport. If this is you, we very much look forward to work with you. Professor Andrew Hill

I chose my course because I am a huge fan of sport and I would really love to become a PE teacher when I finish university. My course focuses directly on what I need to learn in order to become a successful PE teacher and gives me the skills needed for this career. The course also provides me with work experience within schools, allowing me to build my confidence in the field. So far I am really enjoying the physiology aspect of the course. This is an area I find very interesting and I would love to teach this aspect of physical education to younger children who share my passion for sport. I feel very comfortable at York St John because I feel like I can approach my lecturers and tutors whenever I need to, and they are always happy to steer me in the right direction. OUR COURSES — Sport & Exercise Science BSc (Hons)

— Physical Education & Sports Coaching BA (Hons)

Sport and exercise scientists work with athletes to improve performance. In particular, they focus on the physiological, biomechanical and psychological aspects of human performance. On this programme you will study each of these areas and examine how they are combined to keep athletes healthy and performing at their peak.

Coaches and physical education teachers inspire people of all ages to get involved in sport and get the most they can out of it. This course is ideal if you want to change lives and communities through sport. We focus less on pushing elite athletes to be the best and more on promoting healthy, enjoyable participation in sport for all.

— Sport & Exercise Therapy BSc (Hons) Sport therapists work with everyone from elite athletes recovering from injury to older people keeping active through exercise. Our approach to sport prioritises the development and wellbeing of an athlete over their performance. You will develop as a responsible, skilled practitioner informed by our commitment to putting health first.

EXCELLENT FACILITIES At our Nestlé Rowntree Park Sports Campus we are spending around two million pounds on providing new cutting-edge facilities, including a large human performance lab and a new research lab for cardiovascular health. We have also created a purpose-built sport and exercise therapy clinic to accompany our strength and conditioning suite. The existing sport facilities at our 57-acre site include 3G pitches, netball courts, a sports barn and a sprint track. The sport facilities are there to provide a fantastic array of opportunities within your course and are also used by student sports clubs and the wider community. You will have the chance to work with a variety of people on this campus, ranging from people using exercise for rehabilitation, people with dementia and cardiovascular problems through to professional sports people.

PART OF THE COMMUNITY We have longstanding links with various sports organisations and clubs across the region including: – York City Knights – York City Football Club – Wakefield Wildcats – Harrogate Town Football Club – York City Tier One Regional Talent Club These links provide opportunities for students to engage in voluntary work, shadow sport science support staff, assist with research projects when athletes visit the campus and work with the clubs on dissertation projects.

You will be taught by staff members who conduct research at the forefront of their subjects. This means that the curriculum remains contemporary and you can learn about the most up-to-date issues in your areas of interest. The Motivation, Performance and Well-Being (MPaW) research group is among the largest and most productive in the world examining the consequences of being perfectionistic in sport, exercise and health. We also have a newly established Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Health (PatCH) research group that has already begun to establish itself nationally and internationally. Other exciting research in the school includes examining clinical aspects of biomechanics, gambling in professional football and bullying in Physical Education (PE). We are proud to say that much of our Sport research was identified as “internationally excellent” and “world-leading” in the last assessment of the quality of research in UK higher education institutions (REF 2014).
