American Studies and War Studies

• Broaden your learning by choosing one of our interdisciplinary joint honours options. On these courses, you’ll analyse American culture or War through the lens of several different academic areas, including History, Literature, Popular Culture, Sociology, Philosophy, Film, and Politics.

• Explore topics that showcase the diversity of American culture and society on an American Studies degree. We explore approaches to the US Civil War, African American culture and history, the significance of the West, Native American literature, colonial history, crime culture, women’s writing, Latinx works, and national identity.

• Consider war from a huge range of perspectives on a War Studies degree, covering everything from nuclear strategy to the social impact of war. Investigate why wars begin, military strategy, peace organisations, war in literature and media, and civilian experiences of war in society. Explore beyond the classroom with field trips and placements across the region, including York Army Museum and Eden Camp, a WWII Prisoner of War Camp.
