English Literature

• Read beyond the traditional literary canon. Alongside classic texts by well known authors, you’ll explore literature from a huge range of voices from across the globe, throughout history, and from marginalised groups. We believe that reading literature from times, places and lives that are different from our own provides a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

• Prepare for your career. On our Literature at Work module, you’ll develop employable skills and hear from guest speakers about some of the industries you could go into when you graduate.

• Take part in workshops, writing sessions and readings with prominent literary figures through the annual York Literature Festival, which the University plays a big part in. In recent years, we’ve hosted workshops on the Gothic, crime writing, poetry, scriptwriting, eco-writing, and graphic novel production.
