LAW LLB (HONS) This programme gives you the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of Anglo–Welsh law and the legal system, whilst also providing a range of opportunities to pursue specialist areas. You will be fully immersed in the discipline of law and its specific methodologies, such as statutory interpretation and legal reasoning. You will acquire the habits of mind associated with legal thinking, including critical thinking, analytical awareness and problem solving. The programme has been structured to provide you with a thorough grounding in the foundational areas of law, developing your confidence and ability to apply your knowledge to more specialist areas. In keeping with the mission of the University, York St John Law School is

rooted in the principles of social justice which underpin all teaching activity and research. You will study the classic foundations of legal knowledge, and those areas recognised as critical for functioning as a legal professional, such as contract and criminal law. The programme has also been specially designed with a wide variety of optional modules. For example, if you wish to pursue careers in the business or commercial fields, there are opportunities to study employment law and property law and practice. If you are interested the wider social impacts of law, you can focus on subjects such as cyberlaw.

Professional accreditations The LLB programme meets the requirements of a Qualifying Law Degree in England and Wales and has been accredited by the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority (SRA) and Bar Standards Board as a Qualifying Law Degree for the purposes of entry to the professions. This means you can proceed directly to the professional stages of training (currently the LPC for aspiring solicitors and BPTC for Barristers). Your career Many students of Law will go on to qualify as legal professionals: solicitors, barristers or legal executives. However, Law is also a well-respected academic discipline, widely recognised as a prestigious and rigorous degree, and provides an excellent foundation for a career in other areas. Other career routes that appeal to Law students include the civil service, human resource and business management, finance and teaching.
