HISTORY , WAR AND AMERICAN STUDIES UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS

We offer courses in these subject areas: American Studies | History | War Studies

Our department consists of three separate disciplines.

Choose American Studies for an interdisciplinary study of the history, literature, politics, and culture of the United States. You can develop your own pathway through the degree by choosing modules which fit your interests and correspond to our research specialisms. These include the American presidency, US crime culture, women’s writing and African American history. War Studies offers a range of theoretical approaches to war, including historical, political, international, sociological and philosophical. We will help you build a sophisticated understanding of war and global relations, both as subjects worthy of study and as preparation for a variety of career options. Our research and teaching areas range from Ancient Rome, through to the Napoleonic Wars, the Cold War and the War on Terror. On our History course you will explore a broad range of periods, places and peoples, from antiquity to the twenty-first century. You can develop your own specialism focusing on the periods, themes or locations you are interested in, while studying in one of the UK’s most historic cities. Specialist modules, such as History, Community and Culture, incorporate work placements at sites like York Explore Library, York Museums Trust, The National Railway Museum and Yorkshire Film Archive. Our joint honours options mean you can broaden your knowledge and study across two subject areas you feel passionate about. Students on all of these courses have the opportunity to study abroad for either a semester or a year in Europe or the USA. This amazing opportunity to independently experience another culture will offer a valuable new perspective on your subject and prove impressive to future employers.
