SUCCESS STORIES

Some of our graduates tell us their highlights and achievements as they reflect on their time at York St John University. I am a traditional artist and illustrator, and my work is inspired by Yorkshire. I’ve developed my pieces into an extensive range of items, which are available in a growing number of independent stockists and galleries across the UK. I left York St John University as a confident, well-rounded individual, able to jump straight into working for myself and running my small creative business full time. York St John supported me to get there with the help of the wonderful teams and amazing illustration lecturers, as well as the general support from everyone across the University. Our medieval city walls are the best persevered in the country, the Shambles is one of the oldest shopping streets in Europe and whilst York is only a small city, it’s home to over 30 theatres, cinemas, halls and play houses. In fact, York has more attractions per square mile than any other city of its size. With independent shops, a thriving social scene and a uniquely friendly atmosphere, York has it all. The years you spend with us won’t feel like long enough to take in all that York has to offer.

Discovering Yorkshire

Exploring further

It could be said that the UK is made up of England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Yorkshire, such is the strength of self-identity and pride Yorkshire has. Yorkshire is the largest of the UK counties, stretching from the North Sea coast over the Pennine Mountains, and from the River Tees to the Humber. It is home to moorland, national parks, ancient towns, glorious seaside and vibrant cities rich with culture, shops and eateries.

York’s public transport is well connected to many major UK cities. London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Newcastle and Liverpool are all under 2.5hours away, whilst the famous Yorkshire countryside and coast is easy to get to by bus or train. If you would like to cross over to mainland Europe, a quick ferry from Hull or Newcastle or the Eurostar from London, will take you there with ease. There are also many inexpensive airlines that fly from nearby airports, including Manchester and Leeds Bradford, to many destinations across Europe.

Part of our local

COMMUNITY

We’re proud to work with individuals, charities, groups and schools that serve our local community. We believe we all have a role to play in improving lives in our region and beyond. Students across many different courses contribute to the various projects we’re involved with. Converge Converge is a unique collaboration between the NHS and York St John University. Through this scheme our students gain experience of teaching and give back to the community by delivering creative courses for mental health service users. yorksj.ac.uk/converge

Prison Partnership Project This is a partnership between York St John University, HMP New Hall and HMP Askham Grange, to provide weekly creative arts programmes in women’s prisons. Our theatre and music students can get involved in these initiatives as part of their course. yorksj.ac.uk/prisonpartnership

YSJActive The YSJActive team not only deliver sport and fitness services for the University, they also work with various groups in the local community. We stand

FOR CHANGE

Sustainability is as important to us as it is to you. We’re proud to be an actively eco-conscious university. Many of our courses offer modules focused on sustainability and the environment. You can also get involved with the Environmental Society and the Green Ambassador programme through the Students’ Union (see pages 28-29). We’re continually seeking opportunities to invest in sustainable energy systems on our sites. This includes solar panels and heat pumps on our campus and accommodation sites. Solar car ports have been installed at our sports campus, alongside battery storage to power the floodlights on sports pitches at night. In an effort to manage our impact on the environment, by 2030 we aim to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80%.

We’ve planted more than

1,000

trees on our sites in the past few years.

46

YORKSJ.AC.UK

Energy We were the first university in the UK to purchase the majority of our electricity from renewable energy generators. Other steps we have taken to improve energy efficiency include:

Biodiversity We’re proud to have a biodiverse campus. We’ve introduced tansy plants to support the endangered tansy beetle. These are only found around the River Ouse, which flows through York. Our campus also includes: • Habitats for hedgehogs

• The majority of our vehicles are now electric. • We’ve made our buildings more energy efficient by introducing triple glazing into new and refurbished buildings. • We’ve introduced LED lighting across campus to save energy. • We’ve changed our heating systems to reduce energy consumption.

• Bird boxes for kestrels and peregrine falcons • A wildlife pond • Beehives and bug hotels • Student and community allotments

Fairtrade food What we do as a University impacts you, which is why we choose our suppliers carefully. Throughout our campus we have made changes to our catering. For example: • All of our coffee at the University is Rainforest Alliance approved. • The hot chocolate we serve and the sugar in our main outlets are both Fairtrade. • 80% of our cakes are made in house, reducing the need for packaging. • We only use free range eggs.

Waste management • None of our waste has gone to landfill since 2016. The small amount that cannot be recycled is used to generate energy. • All of the green waste from our campus is recycled by our Grounds team through composting and used on our sites. • Our food waste is used to generate biogas for energy and low carbon fertiliser. 47
