LAWRENCE AVE.

68 RAILSIDE | is a project marked by its unique considerations for construction phases. Located in an industrial/ commercial area, the site negotiates a proposed programme of luxury automotive showroom, offices and retail, with existing warehouse and leased office spaces that are to undergo partial demolition and renovation. Classified as a hybrid, the project straddles the use of heavy gage steel and concrete structural systems; which allowed for the exterior face and massing design to blend with the existing built character, while the creating opportunity for a refined interior design palette. Completing the project has been a team effort, where I have run point on the production of construction drawings after the initial design phase was concluded.

DONE entirely within a BIM environment, using Revit to model, produce drawings, coordinate, and run analysis to collect building performance data has kept the project from exceeding it scope, budget and allotted time. The design review and consultant coordination process has remained iterative as the project progressed through site plan approval, building permit submission and bid submission. 68 Railside is currently in contract administration, as I provide further site clarifications and responses to information requests, to support the construction team. I have either created in full or contributed in part, to every drawing and graphic from the 68 Railside project, that is included in this portfolio.

A NOD TO THE CANNON: HorseManShip alludes to the design influences and context in which it exists. The project attempts to address equine welfare, recreation and showcasing. The project also addresses man, meaning here society in its entirety- the citizens of Windsor, and the Annapolis Valley- by preserving their agricultural way of life and traditions. Lastly, the project also addresses the construction context of using a wood structural system, similar to shipbuilding, a theme in the Minas Basin area. The site masterplan, especially in relation to the equine quadrant, is designed with the idea of the North American farmstead in mind. The masterplan celebrates a Hack Trail feature, which rings the exhibition grounds, and touches each quadrant of the development. It is intended for public recreation use, as a nature and riding trail. It allows for equine education, an appreciate for the local ecology, and acts as a supplementary circulation circuit on the site. The project focused on putting forth an Education Center. The 9000 sq. ft (835m2) design integrates classroom learning, seminar holding, library access and equine laboratory testing, through a collaborative interchange between students of all ages and riding abilities, equine professionals, guest clinicians, and community members. The central spine -nave- of the design holds a gallery space for the West Hants Agricultural/ Historical Society to display material. The design breaks from the traditional barn-like form when the angled curtain wall glazing slices open the massing to expose the interior wood structure, and to take advantage of the views into the adjacent pastures and stables beyond. Additionally, stables, run-ins and an indoor dessage schooling arena are designed -broadly- to explore concepts of equine welfare through architecture.

Within a mainland fjord, located in Nuxulk territory and along the northern edge of the Bella Coola River, this project- Cedar Site, celebrates the shaded atmosphere of Western Red Cedar groves; the homes and buildings could be “temples in half-light”. Basked in sun coming from the south side of the valley, yet shaded by the old growth forests and established steep lands. Lean-to outfitting cabins can be built in initial project phases to support the larger proposal. Cedar site nestles into Four Mile Mt., gaining views over the valley, while maintaining safety and longevity of infrastructure. Wood is an archive of the environment in which the tree has lived; its growth rings, knots, and grain bear witness to the geological and physical past of the forest. Even in decay, cedar trees hold stories. Everything is connected in cyclical nature. Gravel roadways could lay the groundwork for creating accessible home sites, and connecting infrastructure services back to Four Mile and Bella Coola proper. Homes could be clustered to create micro neighborhoods, in which the built homes are like arrows piercing the forest. At its peak, some 800 people could be provided a home.

Designs accommodate families, young couples and elderly needs. Temporary or seasonal residents are designed for as well. Outside activities and food preparation is encouraged by a system of wood decks, boardwalks and footpaths- connecting to workshops, smokehouses, gardens, community spaces and commercial areas. Drawing inspiration from cedar leaf scales, the site negotiates mountainous terrain by following naturally occurring contour shelfs and clustering home neighborhoods. Cedar site addresses a desire to reclaim and develop traditional Nuxulk territory. While keeping in mind a changing landscape. Where the River water levels are in flux from climate change as well as wildfire followed by flooding events. The site anticipates the completion of the 6000 year old traditional ooligan grease trail by Nuxulk trail builders, and seeks to place new educational and community facilities in close proximity. Home construction can utilise a façade design that recalls traditional cedar plank siding, historically harvested and crafted by the Nuxulk. A contemporary rendition can keep in with proportions while innovating a connection technique.

Our design incorporated accessibility to the sites with a minimal intervention approach, and was based on a strong understanding of the area’s cultural landscape attributes. The proposed interpretive centre and museum would introduce a meaningful visitor experience and provide an expanded local public education program on the history of the WW2 Homefront in Canada’s Maritimes.
