PRIDE READING LIST
Growing up can be tough and reading is one way to make you realise that you are not the first person to feel the way you do. Here is a selection of fiction and non-fiction, which you may want to read if you are interested in LGBTQ+ issues and relationships. Most of this list has been compiled and written by a member of Pride. Except where indicated, all these books can be found in the OLDER READERS section of the TPS Library. There are many more books in the Library that feature LGBTQ+ characters and if you search the online catalogue you will find more titles than are listed here. Everyone is welcome to come to Pride which currently runs on a Wednesday at 1:45pm in Room 9.
Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli Simon is trying to find out who he is, and he begins emailing 'Blue', but one of these emails gets into the wrong hands.
Alex in Wonderland by Simon James Green The book follows a young man called Alex and his experience in his job at Wonderland, where he falls in love and tries to save the place from debt. It's about friends, family and falling in love.
Proud edited by Juno Dawson A collection of LGBTQ+ short stories, poems and art, including stories about an LGBTQ+ football team, coming out, and with artwork by LGBTQ+ artists accompanying each entry.
Noah Can't Even by Simon James Green Noah, desperate to survive school, hopes to become 'normal' by starting a relationship with Sophie, but his life becomes chaos when his best friend Harry kisses him at a party.

PRIDE READING LIST Noah Could Never by Simon James Green In this sequel to 'Noah Can't Even', Noah has a new set of problems thrown his way, not least by the sexy French exchange student Pierre Victoire arriving in town, who seems to have his eye on Harry.
Release by Patrick Ness Adam's struggle with his faith, and his identity as a young gay man, is contrasted with the paranormal story of a drowned girl who rises from the lake in this sensitively-told story that takes place over the course of a single day.
Boy Meets Hamster by Birdie Milano Dylan thinks his family's visit to Starcross Sands is sure to be dull, but when he sees the gorgeous Jayden-Lee it becomes a lot more exciting. But will a giant, furry hamster called Nibbles ruin his chances?
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
There is a sequel called 'Boy Meets Ghoul'.
by Benjamin Alire Sรกenz Ari has a boring summer ahead of him until he meets Dante. They eventually fall in love and explore the world around them, including identity, family and friendship.
Main fiction section
I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson Twins Noah and Jude are very close until a tragedy drives them apart. They both fall madly in love with people who some feel they are not supposed to.
The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater This is the true and gripping story of two young teens whose lives are turned upside down by a terrible crime: Sasha, an a-gender teen, and Richard, who sets fire to their skirt.

The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson This book shows the journeys of two teens: David, who wants to be a girl, and Leo, an unlikely friend who stands up for David against school bullies. It also shows the struggles faced by many LGBTQ teens.
Main fiction section
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller This is a heart-breakingly beautiful retelling of 'The Illiad'. "We see [Achilles] through Patroclus's eyes, growing from a privileged child to a sensitive teen to a young man struggling to balance his personal feelings with the expectations of an entire country." - Rick Riordan.
Classic and modern literary fiction section
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters There are so many twists and turns in this story set in 19th century London, and in a gloomy, oppressive country mansion, that it will keep you riveted until the end.
Proud: My Autobiography
by Gareth Thomas The story of the gay Welsh rugby player Gareth Thomas who, before he came out, had a wife and played a sport that had no openly-gay players. Non-fiction section
The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst Against the background of 1980s London, Nick Guest navigates his relationships with the beautiful, the rich and the powerful.
Classic and modern literary fiction section
Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson Dryly witty story of a girl growing up in a strictly religious household with a domineering mother whilst trying to come to terms with her sexuality. Classic and modern literary fiction section
