Taco Bell defends its mixture of seasoned meat
BY BOB JOHNSON ASSOCIATED PRESS MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Taco Bell officials on Tuesday rejected claims made in a lawsuit that the meat in their tacos, burritos and other products is not all beef. Taco Bell President Greg Creed said in a statement that the lawyers who filed the lawsuit got their facts wrong and that Taco Bell plans to take legal action against those making the allegations. He did not explain specifically what type of legal action Taco Bell might take. “At Taco Bell, we buy our beef
from the same trusted brands you find in the supermarket,” Creed said. “We start with 100 percent USDA-inspected beef. Then we simmer it in our proprietary blend of seasonings and spices to give our seasoned beef its signature Taco Bell taste and texture.” The class action lawsuit filed Friday in federal court in California by the Montgomery law firm Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles claims the Taco Bell meat mixture contains binders and fillers. An attorney for the law firm, Dee Miles, said Taco Bell saves

money by adding fillers because the beef is the most expensive part of their products. “It’s giving them a competitive edge. It’s an economic edge” over other companies that sell Mexicanstyle food, Miles said. Miles said he wasn’t concerned with Taco Bell’s threat of legal action. “We stand on the absolute facts as stated in the complaint filed in the Federal Court in California,” he said. Creed said Taco Bell is proud of the quality of its beef and identifies the seasoning and spice ingredients on its website. According to that Web site, ingredients used to season the Taco Bell meat include salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, oats, soy lecithin, sugar, soybean oil, garlic powder, yeast extract, citric acid and cocoa powder.

National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) conferees were welcomed to the mansion of U.S. Virgin Islands’ Gov. John P. de Jongh for the 2011 Mid-Winter Conference last week.
Black publishers receive international welcome from governor of Virgin Islands Equal access dominates discussions during Black newspaper publishers conference YUSSUF J. SIMMONDS, EDITOR, LOS ANGELES SENTINEL RICHETTE L. HAYWOOD, NNPA CONTRIBUTOR St. Thomas, Virgin Islands — Equal access. Those two words dominated discussions during the National Newspaper Publishers Association 2011 Mid-Winter Conference last week. Recognizing the need to grow its reach into federal and corporate arenas, the oldest and most influential Black newspaper association had
executives/consultants from the top 25 Fortune 500 companies and industry insiders present the publishers with concrete lessons learned and best practices to expand its penetration into those markets during the U.S. economic recovery. “We pride ourselves on being very on point. We focus on the influence that we have. And, we have a responsibility to enhance the quality of life for our Black brothers and sisters,” NNPA Chair Danny J. Bakewell, Sr. told the group.
Collectively, the association needs to implement a strategy to gain equal access to advertising revenue. Based on an audit of the United States’ Black-owned-and-operated newspapers, Chuck Morrison, executive vice president and general manager of Uniworld, pointed out that the Black press had no advertising reciprocity. Specifically, the companies that consistently spent advertising dollars with the Black press were: AT&T, Comcast, Ford, General Motors,
Home Depot and Macy’s. He also said that of the top 25 companies with a significant market share in the African-American community, some firms did no advertising with the Black press during the review period. The 13 worst entities were: Allstate, Anheuser-Busch, Chrysler, Coke, Kraft, Johnson & Johnson, Miller Coors, Nissan, Pepsi, Sony, Toyota, U.S. government and Walt Disney. AT&T was responsible for gathering the consultants via Kevin Parker’s Capital Consulting Group, which
included a panel on social media to help transform print media into multiplatform media with the ability to influence and attract consumers. Developing strategic approaches to position the Black press to gain equal access to federal and corporate advertising dollars was discussed during several workshops. Dennis Hunn, NNPA executive vice president of advertising and marketing, stressed, “ … We need to know where we are, define where we need to be, and, finally, develop a step-by-step plan to describe how we get there.” Marketing and special events were some of the strategies discussed to help the newspapers generate revenue. MLK daughter’s exit leaves SCLC’s future in doubt BY ERRIN HAINES ASSOCIATED PRESS
AP Photo/John Bazemore
In this Aug. 3, 2010, file photo, Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., speaks at a news conference in Atlanta. King said Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, that she will not assume the presidency of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the civil rights group co-founded by her father more than 50 years ago.
ATLANTA (AP) — The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, founded by the giants of the U.S. civil rights movement, has spent years in decline and power struggles. Now the once-proud organization faces what might be a final blow with the refusal of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter to take the helm. By Friday, following the recent indictment of a former national chairman on theft charges, King’s one-time lieutenants and his daughter had come to the conclusion that the group — which led the movement to end segregation in public facilities and open access to the ballot box for millions of Black Americans — might have run its course. “We should’ve closed it down years ago,” former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young, one of Martin Luther King Jr.’s closest advisers, said Friday after the Rev. Bernice King’s announcement. “I saw this as a lost cause a long time ago.” The Rev. Joseph Lowery, the SCLC’s longest-serving president and 2010 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work during the civil rights movement, said he spoke with Bernice King on Friday. “She and the board couldn’t find common ground, so I think she did the wise thing, rather than enter into a relationship with built-in turbu-
lence,” Lowery said, adding that he was saddened by what has happened to the organization. When King became the first woman elected SCLC president in 2009, she vowed to reinvigorate the organization by expanding the group’s reach to more women and a younger generation. Soon after, the SCLC’s chairman and treasurer were accused of financial mismanagement, and squabbling among the group’s leaders landed the splintered factions in a courtroom. She put off taking her oath as president of the landmark civil rights group co-founded by her father, remaining largely silent as the group’s troubles escalated over the past 16 months. King told The Associated Press that in the end, she and the group’s leaders didn’t agree on how to move forward. “In light of that, and attempts on several occasions to try to reach out and dialogue, this is where I’ve landed,” she said. “Essentially, I knew that I was not going to be merely a figurehead, so I had to make a critical decision. I look forward to continuing the legacies of my parents and establishing my own legacy.” Although she called the SCLC’s recent troubles unfortunate, King stopped short of saying the SCLC should disband. “They have chapters around the nation who hold the name SCLC and they are doing different kinds of work in their communities,”
King said. “They have an opportunity ... to decide and redefine how they want to be projected in the public.” King said she notified board leaders of her decision Jan. 20. Now, she said she is focusing on other endeavors. Last week, King launched a 100 Days of Nonviolence campaign at the Coretta Scott King Academy, named for her mother. The initiative is in response to the shootings in Tucson, Ariz., which claimed six lives and left Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords recovering from a gunshot wound to the head. King also plans to republish her mother’s book, “My Life with Martin Luther King Jr.,” and release the King matriarch’s never-beforepublished autobiography. Young, also a former Atlanta mayor, said Bernice King’s departure from the organization was “wonderful.” “I tried to get Bernice to see when she wanted to revive it that it wasn’t worth wasting her talents on, that we needed to let it go,” Young said. “That doesn’t mean that there’s not work to be done.” Founded by African-American ministers in Atlanta in 1957 following the successful Montgomery (Alabama) Bus Boycott to protest segregation in public transportation, the SCLC under Martin Luther King Jr. advocated nonviolent protest as it worked to bring equality to blacks, particularly in the South.

Black leadership overwhelmingly endorses LaMotte for school board As a veteran educator who has worked at all levels of the school district, Marguerite P. LaMotte is uniquely qualified to continue to fight for quality education for all children. BY YUSSUF J. SIMMONDS CO-MANAGING EDITOR Since Marguerite P. LaMotte has been a member of the school board for the Los Angeles Unified School District No. 1, the percentage of the district’s students considered to be proficient in English and Math has increased — from one-third to 40 percent. Not only is she not satisfied with that increase, but she also is committed to continue the fight for a quality education for all the children of the school district. LaMotte has stated that our schools have taken a pounding as a result of the state budget crisis, but she is committed to do more with less. And that is why the community, including the Black leadership, is standing firmly in support of her re-election, so that she may continue to educate the children who are the future leaders of the country. Taking a page from President

Obama’s State of the Union speech, we must treat teachers with respect, LaMotte, as the “teachers’ ” and community’s choice is in lock step with the President’s program as he articulated, “… When a child walks into a classroom, it should be a place of high expectations and high performance. But too many schools don’t meet this test. That’s why instead of just pouring money into a system that’s not working, we launched a competition called Race to the Top. To all 50 states, we said, ‘If you show us the most innovative plans to improve teacher quality and student achievement, we’ll show you the money.’ ” LaMotte’s approach coincides squarely with President Obama’s vision for education. It is important that we continue the growth in the overall proficiency in our schools, she said, and have parents and the community involved instead of pointing fingers at the teachers and the

school board. Both the parents and the community are equally responsible, as well as the teachers and the school board, LaMotte said. And the quality of her commitment is equally matched by the support and the endorsements she has received. As stated on her margueriteforkids.com, LaMotte has been endorsed by: Congressmembers Maxine Waters and Laura Richardson and former Congresswoman Diane Watson; L.A. County Supervisor Mark RidleyThomas and former supervisor Yvonne Burke; State Sen. Rod Wright; Assemblymembers Steve Bradford, Wilmer Amina Carter, and former Assemblymembers Gwen Moore and Mervyn Dymally; and L.A. City Councilmembers Jan Perry, Herb Wesson and Tom LaBonge. James Butts is Inglewood’s new mayor-elect. The former Santa Monica police chief beat out his opponent, Danny Tabor: 3,776 voters chose Butts, while about 3,000 picked Tabor to be Inglewood’s mayor. The special runoff election was held Jan. 11, but votes were still being counted afterward. The city clerk’s office recently confirmed the final election results, according to news reports. Last year, on Nov. 2, Tabor needed 50 percent of votes plus one, but he didn’t get enough. As a result, he competed in another mayoral run-off election against Butts on Jan. 11. The most recent election is the city’s fourth since June 2010. The first was held in June after former Mayor Roosevelt Dorn left a vacancy for the mayoral office — he resigned after pleading guilty to a public corruption charge. Tabor and Butts were the top vote-getters in that election. Tabor, a former city councilman and a community organizer for the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, had about 26 percent of the vote while Butts received nearly 24 percent in June. That led to a run-off election in August, which Tabor won, becoming mayor. That special August run-off election was required by the city’s charter. Then there was the November election, as well as the election this month. Information from labeez.org.

L.A. Watts Times WEEKENDER
By Ben Feller AP White House Correspondent
WASHINGTON — Pleading for unity in a newly divided government, President Barack Obama implored Democratic and Republican lawmakers to rally behind his vision of economic revival for an anxious nation, declaring in his State of the Union address Tuesday night: “We will move forward together or not at all.” The president unveiled an agenda of carefully balanced political goals: a burst of spending on education, research, technology and transportation to make the nation more competitive, alongside pledges, in the strongest terms of his presidency, to cut the deficit and smack down spending deemed wasteful to America. Yet he never explained how he’d pull that off or what specifically would be cut. Obama spoke to a television audience in the millions and a Congress sobered by the assassination attempt against one if its own members, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Her seat sat empty, and many lawmakers of competing parties sat together in a show of support and civility. Yet differences were still evident, as when Democrats stood to applaud his comments on health care and tax cuts while Republicans next to them sat mute. In his best chance of the year to connect with the country, Obama devoted most of his hour-long prime-time address to the economy, the issue that dominates concern in a nation still reeling from a monster recession — and the one that will shape his own political fortunes in the 2012 election. Eager to show some budget toughness, Obama pledged to veto any bill with earmarks, the term used for lawmakers’ pet projects. House Speaker John Boehner and other Republicans applauded. But Obama’s promise drew a rebuke from his own party even before he spoke, as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the president had enough power and that plans to ban earmarks were “a lot of pretty talk.” Obama’s proposals Tuesday night ranged across the scope of government: cutting the corporate tax, providing wireless services for almost the whole nation, consolidating government agencies and freezing most discretionary federal spending for the next five years. In the overarching theme of his speech, the president told the lawmakers: “The future is ours to win.” In essence, Obama reset his agenda as he heads toward a re-election bid with less clout and limited time before the campaign consumes more attention. Yet Republicans have dismissed his “investment” proposals as merely new spending. Republican Rep.
Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, giving the GOP’s response, said the nation was at “a tipping point” leading to a dire future if federal deficits aren’t trimmed. The Senate’s Republican leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said the president had gotten the message from the November midterm elections and “changed the tone and the rhetoric from the first two years.” Obama entered the House chamber to prolonged applause and to the unusual sight of Republicans and Democrats seated next to one another rather than on different sides of the center aisle. And he began with a political grace note, taking a moment to congratulate Boehner, the new Republican speaker of the House. Calling for a new day of cooperation, Obama said: “What comes of this moment will be determined not by whether we can sit together tonight but whether we can work together tomorrow.” On a night typically known for its political theater, the lawmakers sometimes seemed subdued, as if still in the shadow of the Arizona shootings. Many in both parties wore black-and-white lapel ribbons, signifying the deaths in Tucson and the hopes of the survivors. Giffords’ husband was watching the speech from her bedside, as he held her hand. At times,
Obama delivered lighter comments, seeming to surprise his audience with the way he lampooned what he suggested was the government’s illogical regulation of salmon. Halfway through his term, Obama stepped into this moment on the upswing, with a series of recent legislative wins in his pocket and praise from all corners for the way he responded to the shooting rampage in Arizona. But he confronts the political reality that he must lead a divided government for the first time, with more than half of all Americans disapproving of the way he is handling the economy. Over his shoulder, a reminder of the shift in power on Capitol Hill: Boehner, in the seat that had been held by Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Obama conceded that everything he asked for would prompt more partisan disputes. “It will take time,” he said. “And it will be harder because we will argue about everything. The cost. The details. The letter of every law.” Obama used the stories of some of the guests sitting with his wife, Michelle, to illustrate his points, including a s m a l l busi-
ness owner who, in the tradition of American ingenuity, designed a drilling technology that helped rescue the Chilean miners. Flanking Mrs. Obama in the gallery: Brianna Mast, the wife of a soldier seriously injured in Afghanistan, and Roxanna Green, mother of the 9-year-old girl killed in the Tucson shooting. The president cast the challenges facing the United States as bigger than either party. He said the nation was facing a new “Sputnik” moment, and he urged efforts to create a wave of innovation to create jobs and a vibrant economic future, just as the nation vigorously responded to the Soviets beating the U.S. into space a half century ago. There was less of the see-saw applause typical of State of the Union speeches in years past, where Democrats stood to applaud certain lines and Republicans embraced others. Members of the two parties found plenty of lines worthy of bipartisan applause. Yet as reaction flowed in, there was immediate blowback from all corners of the Democratic base. Environmentalists, trial lawyers, gay rights activists, labor leaders and Latino-rights groups all released statements, ranging from tepid to angry, complaining about everything from Obama’s proposed spending freeze to his definition of clean energy. In a speech with little focus on national security, Obama appeared to close the door on keeping any significant U.S. military presence in Iraq beyond the end of the year. “This year, our civilians will forge a lasting partnership with the Iraqi people while we finish the job of bringing our troops out of Iraq,” the president said. The president reiterated his call for a comprehensive immigration bill, although there appears little appetite for it Congress. Another big Obama priority that stalled and died in the last Congress, a broad effort to address global climate change, did not get a mention in the State of the Union. Nor did gun control or the struggling effort to secure peace in the Middle East. Obama worked in a bipartisan shout-out to Vice President Joe Biden and Boehner as two achievers emblematic of the American dream, the former a working-class guy from Scranton, Pa., the latter once a kid who swept floors in his father’s Cincinnati bar. Biden and Boehner shook hands over that, and Boehner, clearly moved, flashed a thumbs-up. After dispensing with all the policy, the president ended in a sweeping fashion. “We do big things,” the president said. “The idea of America endures.” Associated Press writers Nancy Benac, Jim Kuhnhenn, Erica Werner and Darlene Superville contributed to this report.

PHILADELPHIA — Michael Vick is back pitching products. Vick has signed his first paid endorsement contract since his release from prison. The Philadelphia Eagles’ Pro Bowl quarterback inked a two-year contract with Unequal Technologies, a provider of the football pads Vick wore most of last season. The deal will be announced on Thursday. “We’re real excited about it, chief executive officer Rob Vito said Tuesday. “Michael is good people. He paid his dues. President Obama reached out to him. He deserves an opportunity. This is what makes America so great. He’s moved forward. He’s a whole other person. Vito said Vick is the company’s first corporate spokesman. Terms of his deal weren’t disclosed. But Vito said it’s a “sizable contract. “We believe it was worth it, he said, “because of Michael Vick and how he can shed light on the technology of our products. Unequal Technologies makes several shock-blocking sports pads. When Vick returned after missing three games with a rib injury, he wore a vest designed by Unequal. He later wore shoulder pads and thigh pads made by the company. “The Unequal technology is a part of my game now and I won’t play without my Unequal, Vick said in a statement acquired by The Associated Press. “Unequal’s protective power gives me a whole new level of confidence in my game. It makes me feel invincible. Vick was once the NFL’s highest-paid player and he endorsed many
products during his six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. But Vick lost everything following his 2007 arrest and later conviction on dogfighting charges, for which he served 18 months in federal prison. He returned to the NFL in 2009 with the Eagles, and worked his way from a seldom-used third-string quarterback to the key cog on a divisionwinning team. He will start for the NFC in the Pro Bowl this weekend. Vick appeared in a television commercial for a car dealership last month. However, he didn’t get paid for it. He was compensated by having use of a Nissan sport utility vehicle.
Economically, the agreement with the company will generate $50 million in revenue this year and is projected to triple within in the next six years. The Honorable John P. de Jongh, Jr., governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, welcomed Bakewell, the publishers and their guests. He also commended the NNPA for the tremendous help in securing Diageo USVI, the Virgin Islands’ newest rum distillery in St. Croix. During the closing night salute dinner, award-winning actress and
author Victoria Rowell thanked the membership for its coverage of the ongoing challenge faced by Blacks to gain equal access to jobs in the entertainment industry. She commended the association for its support that recently resulted in the hiring of the first African-American writer on the popular daytime soap opera “Young and the Restless, where she appeared for 17 years. “This is only step one, said Rowell, referring to the three-timeaward-winning writer hired on a sixweek-trial basis for the show. “None of this could have been expedited had it not been for you. The Black press has always been good to us. We have a long way to go in Hollywood. But, none of this could have happened, the way it happened, had it not been for the Black press. We need access. And, this is what the fight is about.

Bakewell told the publishers the association’s support of the U.S. Virgin Islands’ 30-year agreement with the owners of locally produced Cruzan Rum was the right thing to do. Jackson’s doc pleads not guilty in star’s death
AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes
Conrad Murray BY LINDA DEUTSCH AP SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson’s doctor pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the pop superstar’s death as the case moved rapidly toward a trial that will likely be televised. “Your honor, I am an innocent man,” Dr. Conrad Murray told Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor in a soft voice. “I definitely plead not guilty.” Lawyers for Murray, who is accused of giving Jackson a lethal dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol and other sedatives, said they would be ready to go to trial within the 60-day statutory time limit, which would make for an unusually speedy trial. Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said the prosecution would be ready to go as well for the trial he estimated would last six weeks. The judge scheduled the trial to begin March 28 and set a pretrial hearing for Feb. 7. “Dr. Murray is looking forward to finally telling his side of the story,” defense attorney Ed Chernoff said outside court. Asked why the defense wants to begin the trial so quickly, Chernoff said, “Dr. Murray has been waiting 22 months for his opportunity to do this. It’s the first chance we have to force the issue.” Pastor said he was inclined to allow television coverage of the trial and will hear attorneys’ views on that and other issues at a Feb. 7 hearing. District attorney’s spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said outside court that her office has a policy of not opposing cameras in court. Cameras were allowed at the hearing Tuesday for the first time, marking a shift in Pastor’s previous ban. One of Murray’s lawyers said earlier he would not seek a plea bargain, and the defense had no qualms about going to trial in spite of strong prosecution evidence at a preliminary hearing aiming to prove the doctor’s
gross negligence killed Jackson. “We’re going to go to trial,” defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan said in an interview. “I think our case is really solid. We were very pleased with the way the evidence went at the preliminary hearing ... This should result in an acquittal.” Gibbons declined to comment on whether a plea bargain had been discussed saying it would be unethical to address such a matter. Defense attorneys not connected to the case said Murray would be well advised to plea bargain. “If I were advising him, I would be talking to the district attorney to see what they would be willing to accept,” said criminal defense attorney Steve Cron. An offer of probation with community service and temporary suspension of Murray’s medical license would be worth considering if it were proposed, he said. Pastor has suspended Murray’s license to practice in California pending trial. Legal experts said several defenses are available to Murray. Among them is the suggestion by his lawyers that Jackson, desperate for sleep, self-administered a fatal dose of propofol while Murray was out of the room. That theory would mean Jackson either injected propofol into an IV line or swallowed the drug, which is meant to be administered intravenously during surgery. Prosecution experts are likely to challenge that scenario. They also could say Murray was negligent in leaving the drug on a night stand where Jackson could reach it. “They’ve got to explain why Dr. Murray was giving him propofol in the first place, in a setting where it is not normally given,” said Cron, who has been watching the case. Murray may have to testify in his own defense to provide the answers, Cron said. Chernoff said the defense has not yet made a decision on that possibility. “My guess is he will have to explain some of these things and present his persona to the jury as a reasonable, competent doctor,” Cron said. If convicted, Murray could face a maximum of four years in prison. In a six-day preliminary hearing, a portrait emerged of a doctor trying to help his famous client overcome debilitating insomnia with propofol, which is not intended for home use. Jackson had used it before and demanded it, calling it his “milk.” A coroner testified that Jackson, 50, died of a propofol overdose in combination with other drugs on June 25, 2009. His death was classified as a homicide. Murray’s behavior before and
after Jackson stopped breathing was detailed by household staff and paramedics. It was backed up with phone records, e-mails and, most importantly, a transcript of Murray’s nearly three-hour interview with police. Murray said he gave Jackson a low dose of propofol after spending 10 hours trying to get him to sleep using other drugs. When the star appeared to doze off, Murray said he left the room for two minutes to go to the bathroom then returned to find Jackson not breathing. He delayed calling 911 for between 25 minutes and an hour while he tried to revive him, testimony showed.

The SCLC played a major role in the March on Washington, as well as civil rights campaigns in Birmingham and Selma, Ala. The group’s efforts helped lead to the end of segregation and the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The SCLC also spoke out against poverty, racism and war. “It did its work well,” Young said. “But it was never any law that said we all had to stay together for the rest of our lives. I don’t believe in keeping organizations alive just for the sake of the name.” SCLC Chairwoman Sylvia Tucker said she was stunned by King’s decision. “We have to continue to move forward, because there’s such a need out there,” Tucker said. “Having a president doesn’t determine what our mission is, to really take care of the least of these.” Tucker said she was not sure when a new president might be elected. As its president from 1957 until his assassination in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was the face of the SCLC for the major

Flav’s Fried Chicken opened Monday in Clinton, Iowa. Flav has been there preparing for the launch and told the Clinton Herald he’ll visit often for promotions and even work the fryer. Flav says it’s the first in a chain that stemmed from the 99 cent wings he served at Mama Cimino in Las Vegas. His business partner is the brother of that restaurant’s owner. Flavor Flav, whose real name William Drayton Jr., founded hip-hop group Public Enemy in the ’80s. He found fame anew in 2004 on the third season of VH1’s “The Surreal Life.” He also starred in the network’s “Flavor of Love.” He has a culinary degree and restaurant experience. Ralph Abernathy, who served from 1968 until 1977, and then Lowery from 1977 until 1997. Lowery then turned the organization over to Martin Luther King III, who headed it from 1998 to 2003. “It has so many problems,” said Lowery, the president emeritus of SCLC. “Fighting without, fighting within ... Unless they find a grip on reality soon, I think outside forces will determine their fate and the organization won’t have to do anything about it at all.” At a press conference after her election, Bernice King said she was
eager to rejuvenate the group. But the news weeks later that the SCLC was looking into allegations that its chairman and treasurer had mismanaged funds threw its board of directors into chaos as members chose sides. By the spring, the dispute over who controlled the SCLC was headed to court. The group had split into two factions, both claiming to be in charge and making decisions on behalf of the entire organization. Bernice King led a prayer for unity within the group in August, calling for an end to the hard feelings. In September, a judge ruled that the directors siding with King were the group’s legitimate leaders.

West Angeles CDC to Bryan Monroe, former Ebony VP, celebrate leadership named editor of CNNPolitics.com transition with groundbreaking ceremony Person of the Week
(Target Market News) — Award-winning journalist Bryan Monroe has joined CNN as editor of CNNPolitics.com, it was announced today by Meredith Artley, vice president and managing editor of CNN.com. In this newly created role, Monroe will lead the editorial planning and content strategy for CNN’s online and mobile political coverage from the network’s DC Bureau. “Bryan is an outstanding addition to the talented CNNPolitics.com team, and also to CNN’s DC bureau, including Sam Feist, Edith Chapin and their teams,” said Artley. “His experience and leadership will expand and deepen our political reporting across CNN.com, The Political Ticker and all of our mobile products.” Most recently, Monroe was a visiting professor at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, and is a former president of NABJ, the National Association of Black Journalists. Also, while at Knight-Ridder in 2005, he helped lead the team in Biloxi, Miss., that won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for their coverage of Hurricane Katrina. “I am thrilled to be joining CNN and the nation’s best political team, particularly at a time when political coverage is at the front and center of the national conversation,” said Monroe. “Helping extend those conversations across the Bryan Monroe Web and mobile devices is an exciting challenge.” Prior to his professorship at Northwestern, Monroe served as vice president and editorial director at Ebony and Jet magazines in Chicago. At the magazines, he led the coverage of the 2008 presidential elections and conducted the first interview with then President-elect Barack Obama following his November victory; and also had the last major interview with pop star Michael Jackson before his death in 2007.

Founding CEO Lula Ballton to pass torch to new executive director, Tunua Thrash
Bishop Charles E. Blake Bishop Charles E. Blake, pastor of West Angeles Church of God in Christ, and founder of West Angeles Community Development Corp. (CDC), will lead community residents, business leaders, government officials and others in a groundbreaking ceremony for a new commercial office and retail center on the corner of Crenshaw and Jefferson boulevards on Feb. 10 at 9 a.m. The 45,000-square-foot West Angeles Plaza, directly across from the North Campus of West Angeles Church, will feature a new Union Bank branch and Fresh & Easy market. Partially financed with federal stimulus funds, The Plaza will create 150 jobs while reinforcing Crenshaw Boulevard as the principal mercantile street in South Los Angeles. “This is exactly what we envisioned when the CDC was conceived … an entity that could translate the neighborhood’s desire for safe, attractive venues that offer quality goods and services into reality,” says Blake. Bishop Blake founded West Angeles CDC a year after the civil unrest in 1992 to provide a link between a thriving church and a community in need of revitalization. Today, West Angeles CDC is considered one of leading faithbased community development organizations in the country. “I can’t think of a better way to pass the reigns onto my successor than this,” says Lula Ballton, CEO of West Angeles Community Development Corp. Tunua Thrash, executive director of West Angeles CDC, will succeed Dr.
Ballton on March 1. “I appreciate the great foundation Dr. Lula Ballton has established and look forward to more successful groundbreakings that build on the community’s assets,” says Thrash. Ms. Thrash grew up in South Los Angeles and went to UC Berkeley and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she received a master’s in urban planning. Prior to becoming executive director, Thrash was a principal at Green Door Advisors and previously served as director of economic development at West Angeles CDC. Thrash will be formerly introduced at West Angeles CDC’s Annual Unity Awards Banquet on Feb. 3 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The annual gala event traditionally marks the beginning of Black History Month while bringing together parishioners, community and business leaders and other supporters. The Unity Award for Man of the Year is actor and comedian Chris Tucker. Other awardees include Pierre R. Habis, senior executive vice president of Union Bank, who receive the Unity Award for Outstanding Corporate Citizen; and Laphonza Butler, president of United Long-Term Care Workers Union-SEIU who will receive the Unity Award for Outstanding Community Citizen. The mission of West Angeles Community Development Corporation is to increase social and economic justice, demonstrate compassion and eradicate poverty as a tangible expression of the kingdom of God through the vehicle of community development.

Trust Black Women — Keep the billboards up BY LA VERNE TOLBERT, PH.D. The toomanyaborted.com billboard campaign is an educational tool to inform the black community about the ravages of abortion on our population. Throughout Los Angeles, 70 billboards proclaim these simple facts: “Black children are an endangered species,” and “Black is beautiful.” Viewers are directed to the website for more information. Our timing for the campaign was strategic … to coincide with the celebration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and in protest of the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion. Why? Planned Parenthood and abortion proponents specifically target Black women. To date, more than 20 million Black babies have died, and that’s too many! Janette Robinson Flint, who wrote “Trust Black women — take the billboards down” in the L.A. Watts Times last week, has complained because the billboards were along the route of the King parade and visible to the community and its leaders. This was our goal. The message, designed by African Americans, is for African Americans. Ryan Bomberger, whose mother chose to put him up for adoption rather than abort, is the genius behind this marketing strategy. The L.A. campaign is being sponsored by the Rev. Walter Hoye, president of the Issues4Life Foundation, and supported by those of us who serve on his board and advisory board. Additionally, throughout the country, the Black pro-life movement supports these efforts because, frankly, enough is enough. We plan to bring this campaign to as many inner cities as possible. We’re not sure which source Flint is relying upon, but her information is somewhat faulty. The Radiance Foundation’s TooManyAborted.com campaign has yet to appear in Illinois or Florida, but prayerfully, we’re on our way. Flint accuses the campaign of being a “racist and divisive campaign
that objectifies Black children [and] charges Black women with genocide.” How can Black women — the victims of abortion — be charged with genocide? Where is that message? Such empty rhetoric has been
La Verne Tolbert used for nearly 40 years to convince Black women to exercise their right to have their babies aborted. Think about this. Why is abortion more necessary for Black women than for other women? Why is this right so religiously defended by those who tout the reasons of economic disparity? Here’s why: The Department of Health and Human Services hired Planned Parenthood in 1970 to establish abortion clinics in the Black community to limit the growth of the Black population. Ever wonder why you don’t find abortion clinics lining the streets of other communities? During the ’50s and ’60s, Black women traditionally had large families. They were identified as “particularly fecund” or fertile by the government, so a plan was implemented: Hire Planned Parenthood to establish free-standing, low-cost, non-medical family-plan-
ning facilities in the Black community and put birth-control clinics in their children’s schools. The Family Planning Services and Population Research Act of 1970 (Title X) designated $400 million each year for these services. By law, monies are not to be used for programs that provide abortions. But it seems that Planned Parenthood does so regardless. Flint noted that Black children are not comparable to bald eagles, blue whales, and California condors. This is unfortunate, because if they were, killing them would at least be a crime. Black children are more endangered by abortion — 3 times more than the majority population — than any other racial demographic in America. Statistically, for every 1.3 live births in the Black community, 1 child is aborted. This is not liberation. This is elimination. We simply want the killing of our children to stop now. What Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would never stand for is the taking of innocent unborn lives. He would be appalled at the deterioration of the Black family in the aftermath of abortion — a barbaric practice that lies to women and dehumanizes us all. Once upon a time, 78 percent of all Black households were headed by two married parents. Today, our communities barely boast 30 percent intact families. The biggest determinant of poverty is single parenting. Abortion is never the answer to poverty. Abstinence education, which has been denied to the children and teens in Los Angeles (nearly $8 million in abstinence education funds was rejected by our state legislators) must be taught in our churches and schools. Instead, there are more than 140 school-based or school-linked health clinics in urban middle and high schools encouraging boys and girls to have sexual intercourse. They are given low-dose birthcontrol pills and cheap condoms, so pregnancy is inevitable for those who become sexually active. No problem! School staff and “health” workers are eager to transport minors off campus to a local Planned Parenthood clinic for abortions and even sterilization without parental notification or consent. Parents come home from work and have no idea that their child has had a major surgery. Something is wrong with this picture. Abortion is never the answer to an unplanned pregnancy. How can it be that the death of black unborn See TOLBERT, page 15
China: New opportunities for African-American businesses BY DR. BENJAMIN F. CHAVIS JR. NNPA COLUMNIST In the wake of the tremendous White House welcome and state visit of President Hu Jintao of China to Washington, D.C., and Chicago, President Barack Obama was successful in continuing to improve the overall relations between the United States and China. It is strategically important for African-American business leaders to explore ways and means to develop and expand economic ties with China. Timing is important. We should not take for granted what is happening throughout the world in 2011 when it comes to doing business with China. In particular, the Black American business community should always be seeking new opportunities to expand and grow. If we are ever going to get the majority of African Americans out of poverty, it will be through education and economic empowerment. The world is changing to enhance international trade and commerce. African-American spending power as consumers is about a trillion dollars annually. We buy a massive amount of products that are made in China. It is past time for us to see our situation differently from an economic perspective. The truth is Chinese business leaders are eager and interested in developing joint business ventures with African-American business leaders. Beyond being consumers, we should be ready to move more to be in the productive side of the U.S. and global economy. What better place in the world would it be for African Americans and other minorities to do business than in one of the world’s rising economic powers? Today, China is also the leading trading partner for all of Africa. African business owners are finding profitable success through numerous joint ventures with their Chinese counterparts. I encourage many of the existing African American Chambers of Commerce in Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, New York, Georgia, Florida and in other cities across the United States to accelerate their outreach to China. President Obama has opened the business development door wider than ever before for new business proposals and ventures to be established with Chinese business leaders. It is urgent, therefore, for
Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. African Americans to be at the forefront in seeking out these real opportunities. In all of the leading economies in Africa, China has emerged as a reliable and substantial business partner. South Africa’s first Black billionaire is Patrice Tihopane Motsepe, whose business interests span a wide array of diverse ventures, including African Rainbow Minerals that has done extremely well in gold, ferrous metals, base metals, and platinum. Chinese business leaders have reached out to Motsepe on a number of ventures in South Africa and throughout other regions of the continent of Africa. Champion Motors International Inc. (Chamotor) is headquartered in Sunrise, Fla., and led by Philippe Lenoir. Chamotor has regional offices in South Africa and China. Chamotor China has manufacturing plants in six different provinces of China. Chamotor is now a global business and is a leading manufacturer and distributor of high quality mass transit vehicles and industrial equipment. Dr. Willie Wilson, owner of Chicago’s Omar Medical Supplies company, is another success model of how an African-American business man in the United States established a multimillion-dollar business venture with China. I know Wilson personally and he is a visionary business leader who has a genius for entrepreneurship. Wilson is role model not only for business success, See CHAVIS, page 15
