The event started at 9:00 a.m. with a walking tour of several community organizations, beginning at the Watts Labor and Community Action Committee (WLCAC). General manager and renowned community leader Tina Watkins welcomed participants and provided a tour of the WLCAC facilities and the Cecil Fergerson Gallery. Community activists from the East Side Riders Bike Club also demonstrated bike tricks for children and their families. The walking tour concluded at Ted Watkins Park, where another 40 organizations were on hand to talk with participants about critically important services and resources that are available in Watts-Willowbrook and across South Los Angeles. These organizations included Shields for Families, Watts Health Corporation, California WIC, Cedars-Sinai’s COACH for Kids and Kaiser Watts Counseling and Learning Center. Entertainment included the LA County Arts Commission, which hosted J.A.M. Samba Dance Party sessions; Hoop it UP, which held hula hoop lessons for children and parents; cooking demos and face painting with the Watts Healthy Farmers Market and a performance by the Watts Village Theatre. residents out and moving, while linking families to important and valuable resources located right in the neighborhood. Watts-Willowbrook is home to dozens of resource organizations and Best Start Watts-Willowbrook wants the community to know about them. The parents and residents who make up the Best Start Watts-Willowbrook Partnership—and volunteered their time—are committed to improving the lives of their children and the future of Watts. Best Start is an effort of First 5 LA, a child advocacy organization created by California voters to invest tobacco tax revenue in programs that improve the lives of children ages 0-5 in Los Angeles County. Best Start focuses its efforts on children ages 0-5 because studies show that 90 percent of brain development occurs in the first few years of a child’s life. NBA Hall of Famer and entrepreneur “Magic” Johnson shares path to business success BY STARLA MUHAMMAD SPECIAL TO THE NNPA FROM THE FINAL CALL COLUMBUS, Ohio - Earvin “Magic” Johnson is easily considered one of the greatest basketball players in history. But it’s his strategic business moves off the court that have made the five-time NBA champion and Hall of Famer a force to be reckoned with and widened his impact. His wise investments and partnerships have elevated him toward all-star status in another arena. Just as noteworthy, is Mr. Johnson’s track record of opening businesses in predominately Black neighborhoods, providing jobs in the community. As a youth, his goal was to play professional basketball, but it was not his sole focus, Mr. Johnson told a gathering of Black business owners and entrepreneurs, at the Black Enterprise Conference and Expo held recently in Columbus, Ohio. Former college and NBA player, current collegiate basketball TV analyst Clark Kellogg conducted a one-on-one “fireside” chat with the basketball legend on the first day of the conference, in which Mr. Johnson talked about his start in business and shared keys for success. “Even as a young man who was thinking
about playing in the NBA, I was still dreaming about being a businessman because I’m a big believer if you can’t dream it, you can’t become it. So, when I got my first job at 16, it was 7 floors that I had to clean, you know, an office building,” he told the audience. “I would get to that seventh floor and I would bust in like I was Earl Graves, Sr., you know like I was the CEO,” said Mr. Johnson flashing his trademark smile. Earl Graves, Sr., is the renowned founder and publisher of Black Enterprise magazine, longtime businessman and philanthropist. Mr. Johnson credited two Black businesses men, Greg Eaton and Joel Ferguson in his hometown of Lansing, Mich., as examples of Blacks owning buildings, car dealerships and other businesses. They were his childhood examples of what could be accomplished, he explained. It is important that Blacks mentor and help one another in business, he added. Mr. Johnson, CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises is part-owner of the LA Dodgers major league baseball team and has several enterprises including Magic Workforce Solutions, Sodexo Magic Food Service, Magic Airport Holdings, ASPiRE and other entities. He began fact-finding, researching and reaching out to people early in his playing career to set the stage for the growth and development of his own business portfolio.

About 140 people have been arrested during the latest weekly demonstration led by the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP against the state's Republican-led General Assembly. Police estimate that roughly 1,000 people attended a rally late Monday afternoon behind the Legislative Building. Hundreds later entered the building, with those intending to get arrested wearing green wrist bands.
Those arrested were taken away in plastic bindings. They bring the total arrested in the weekly demonstrations to about 300. The rallies have taken place nearly every Monday since April. Hundreds more waited outside to cheer on those arrested as they were transported to a detention facility. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has spearheaded demonstrations to protest cuts to social programs, changes to voting laws and other issues championed by the GOP.

‘Magic’ Johnson {Continued from page 3} that?, he asked, giving audience members something to think about. “A lot of people looked at me as a dumb jock. I could play basketball but I couldn’t run a business,” he said. Mr. Johnson said he was repeatedly turned down by investors and potential business partners that did not share his vision or think that he was business savvy. And the fact he wanted to invest in the so-called ghettos and ‘hoods around the country was a vision, few shared. “We have to get into … proving people wrong. Everybody told me I couldn’t do it in urban America. They said there was no money to be made in urban America,” explained Mr. Johnson. “I wanted to impact Urban America. I wanted to show people. Here we are, African Americans about a trillion dollars spending power. Latinos about a trillion dollars spending power. That’s a lot of disposable income. We love to shop; we love to do things but the problem is, a lot of retail is not in our community. We’ve got to drive outside of our communities and spend our money,” he said. Mr. Johnson said knowing demand for products, goods and services was present in the inner cities prompted him to open Magic Johnson Theaters in 1994 in South Central L.A., in a joint venture with Sony Pictures Entertainment. Through the years, he has formed business partnerships with Starbuck’s, T.G.I. Friday’s and 24 Hour Fitness And it has certainly paid off as Mr. Johnson’s net worth, estimated to be $700 million makes him one of the country’s wealthiest Black Americans. Forming strategic partnerships is important stressed Mr. Johnson. “A lot of times we want it all for ourselves, we want 100 percent. And that becomes a problem,” he continued. “Look, if I can get 50 percent of something, I’m good. That check is still good. So you get somebody that don’t have the expertise that you have and then you guys come together and you build something very powerful and build a successful business.” Different knowledge bases and skill sets are part of the formula for his success, he continued. “I know what I know and hopefully my partner knows something else and then we come together and make a lot of money and then we put people in our community to work. And that’s what I did to build my business,” said Mr. Johnson. The same work ethic displayed on the basketball court is what he brings to the board room he shared.
“If you’re going to be in business, you better be a competitor. A competitor will do their homework, research, bring their passion and fire, will be disciplined. You know it’s really important to stay focused on the prize,” he said. Mr. Johnson shared how he disregarded naysayers and could not wait to prove them wrong and told the crowd they must do the same. He also said hiring the right personnel is critical. “The number one failure of minority-owned business is either finance number one, number two, you done hired the wrong people and most of the time it’s your family. I paid mine to stay away!” he laughed. Another key Mr. Johnson told participants to make sure they wrote down is that it is important in a business to exceed expectations. When the opportunity is there, “you’ve got to over deliver,” but don’t take on more than you can manage, he cautioned. Building a track record of success and brand building are also important he said, adding, “Your brand, your reputation is everything.” Commenting on the grim fact that Blacks, Latinos and other minorities have been unable to pass down wealth to future generations, Mr. Johnson said parents must teach their children early about business, citing Mr. Graves Sr. as an example. His son Earl “Butch” Graves, Jr. is now President and CEO of Black Enterprise after being prepared by his father. Mr. Johnson said he is doing the same with his oldest son, Andre. Although he is now a multimillionaire, Mr. Johnson told the crowd he has not forgotten his roots, growing up poor in Lansing. The youngest of 9 children, Mr. Johnson’s mother and father worked hard to provide for their children. Giving back is something Mr. Johnson said is important. His Magic Johnson Foundation formed not long after he made his 1992 announcement that he was HIV positive, awards student scholarships, hosts job and health fairs, HIV/AIDS education and a host of other community services. “God blessed us to be able to do what we do and then somebody helped us along the way to achieve what we are achieving at that time. Those two African American men helped me to become what I am today. That’s why I’m standing here talking to everybody,” said Mr. Johnson. “So it’s my job to reach back and to give back, too. And so I really believe that you can do good and do well at the same time; That you can give back and still be successful at the same time. We should always be about giving back while we’re trying to also build our own success.”

BY GEORGE E. CURRY NNPA EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ATLANTA (NNPA) – Sacramento, Calif. Mayor Kevin Johnson, the newly-elected president of the National Conference of Black Mayors (NCBM), told his colleagues that if they don’t improve the lives of their constituents, they don’t deserve to remain in office. “We got these good seats, we’ve been elected and we get honored and esteemed everywhere we go,” Johnson said at a luncheon here at the group’s 39th annual convention. “It’s not just for us. It’s for the communities that we represent. Our obligation is to bring more and more people along. Because if we don’t do that, then we’re not fit for the seats that PHOTO COURTESY OF PASSKEY CHOICE we hold.” ENTERTAINMENT & DIGITAL MEDIA Johnson, a former star NCBM President Kevin Johnson NBA point guard for the Phoenix Suns, cited the enormous growth of the mayors’ group. He noted that the NCBM began as a small, Southern organization in 1974 and now is a national force with nearly 700 mayors in the U.S., representing 48 million people or 15 percent of the U.S. population. In recent years, it has expanded its international reach and now has more than 26,000 mayors on its roll, including many from Nigeria, Senegal, Uganda, Columbia and throughout the Caribbean. “In terms of [population served], we’re bigger than Spain, Canada and Australia,” Johnson said. “Think about that. If we come together in numbers, we have that type of strength as an organization to do some remarkable things.” He continued, “The question we all have to ask ourselves is this: As African-American mayors, are our cities better off because we’re elected? Are the people we represent better off because we hold the seats that we hold?” In too many cases, Johnson said, the answer is no. “Any category that’s bad, Black folks are at the top,” Johnson said. “Any category that’s good, Blacks folks, we’re at the bottom. That’s hard to do. We have somehow managed to do that. “If you think about obesity, which is bad, we’re at the top. If you’re talking about unemployment, which is not good for us, we’re at the top. If you’re talking about dropping out, we’re at the top. If you’re talking about teenage pregnancy, we’re at the top. If you’re talking about being a renter instead of a homeowner, we’re at the top. Come on now.” Because mayors work so closely to people, they are in position to bring about some fundamental change. “We’re where the rubber meets the road,” Johnson explained. “Don’t expect Washington to solve our problems. That’s what this organization is all about.” He said, “I’m just saying to us today, we have an opportunity to do something really special. And it’s not only about talk, it’s about us holding ourselves up and banding together as one unit and making sure our voices are heard, that we have a seat at the table “We don’t just want a seat at the table, we want more than one seat at the table. And when you’re at the table, we need to be able to make decisions at the table and give some solutions and problem-solving ideas.” Johnson was passionate as he discussed the future of the organization. “The National Conference of Black Mayors – that name needs to mean something,” Johnson stated. “Every decision that we make going forward needs to be in the best interest of this organization. It’s not about one individual, it’s not about our cities, it’s not about any staff or mayor. It’s about what’s in the best interest of this organization. And that’s the commitment we’re all making here.” He also said, “There are many people who counted us out. They said over and over, this organization can’t last. And we’re standing here after 39 years and the best days are ahead.”
Calif. foreclosure victims will get $1,500 checks Checks for nearly $1,500 going to 200K Californians as part of national foreclosure settlement SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -More than 200,000 Californians will each receive checks worth nearly $1,500 this month as part of the national mortgage settlement, the state attorney general's office said Tuesday. The money is going to homeowners who successfully filed claims saying they were the victims of wrongful foreclosures. Attorney general spokesman Nick Pacilio said that the national settlement administrator, Rust Consulting, will mail checks of about $1,480 starting next week to about 207,000 Californians who lost their homes. That amounts to more than $307 million in settlement money statewide, and is part of the $1.5 billion in settlement checks that will be sent to nearly 1 million borrowers nationwide. Those who were eligible for the checks had their mortgage serviced by one of the settlement's five major banks and lost their homes to foreclosure between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2011. The five participating banks are Ally Financial Inc., Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Wells Fargo & Co. The borrowers filed claims that they were the victims of misconduct by the lenders in the servicing of their mortgages. That primarily involved complaints that lenders lost their refinancing applications or that the borrowers were victims of what are known as "dual-track foreclosures," a practice that is now illegal in California where lenders filed notices of default while they also considered alternatives to foreclosures. The money is part of the $42 billion national settlement, which is

In life it is not always where you start, but more importantly where you finish and the commitment one makes to both family and community. There isn’t a better example of life’s evolving journey than Bank of America Western Region Senior Vice President Barry Simmons. For Simmons that journey which nurtured his character, honed his determination and inspired his spirit for diversity and many of life lessons began on a high school football field in New Orleans. He was a teammate of Cooper Manning, the elder brother of NFL super star quarterback Peyton Manning, who was a young unpolished quarterback during that time. A line backer on the field, Simmons went on to play at the University of Virginia and probably could have been one of the prestigious 1500 members National Football League club, but he’s among an even more elite group now. His responsibility today carries more weight than a football player chasing down a running back or quarterback and puts him in a position to make life-changing decisions for families and individuals across Los Angeles. “Everyone I touch, I want to make their lives better, financially or otherwise. I want to leave an imprint in business and the communities I serve.” For Simmons, it started 17 years ago in the management development program for the credit card company, Legacy MBNA. During his time there he was allowed to rotate through all of the entry-level positions. Simmons started at telesales, outbound calls and collections then moved on to customer service and grave-yard shifts and the experience taught him to understand the people who he would eventually lead in his position at Bank of America. Powerful endorsements fuel Dotson City Council run in Inglewood
Rice named to National Security Advisor post WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Barack Obama’s top national security adviser is resigning and will be replaced by Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. who has been a lightning rod for Republican criticism over faulty explanations for the attack that killed four Americans in Benghazi, Libya. Tom Donilon has been a key foreign policy adviser to President Barack Obama. But the 58-year-old had been expected to depart sometime this year, with Rice seen as the likely candidate to replace him. Rice’s selection was greeted by a muted response from some Republicans who had earlier accused her of being part of an administration cover-up in the Benghazi attacks. Arizona Sen. John McCain, one of Rice's harshest critics, wrote on Twitter Wednesday that he disagreed with her appointment but would “make every effort” to work with her on important matters. And Tennessee Sen. Relying on talking points from the intelligence community, Rice said in television interviews that the attacks were likely spontaneous, which was later proven incorrect. Obama considered nominating Rice as his second-term secretary of state, but she withdrew amid the GOP criticism, saying she didn’t want her confirmation fight to be a distraction for the White House. The president instead nominated John Kerry, who easily won confirmation from his former Senate colleagues. Rice's new post as national security adviser does not require Senate confirmation. L.A. Football Icon Enjoyed Every Moment of Life
T BY KENNETH MILLER | ASSISTANT MANAGING EDITOR Greg Pinto, the 48-year old stepson of legendary football player Deacon Jones, says that if the master could have the final say at his funeral; “He would enjoy seeing all of the people, point to the ceiling and say I gave it everything I had.” The Hall of Fame defensive end credited with terming the word sack for how he knocked down quarterbacks died of natural causes on June 3. He was 74. His wife of more than three decades Elizabeth Jones and stepson Greg Pinto survive him. Jones was the colorful and outspoken leader of the L.A. Rams Fearsome Foursome unit from 1961-71 and called Jones the “greatest defensive end of modern football,” by his coach George Allen. The Allen family had Jones present George Allen for his Hall of Fame induction in 2002. His unoƥcial 159½ sacks for them and 173½ for his career – propelled him to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980. A 14th-round draft pick in 1961 out of Mississippi Valley State, Jones was one of the most durable players, missing just five games in his 14 pro seasons. He once said: “Coming from a poor, inner-city neighborhood myself, I have

an intimate knowledge of all of the problems people face there. It's not just the inability to aơord a good education that is a problem. Inner-city kids have to be prepared for college in every sense. For instance, kids from Beverly Hills grow up hearing about the stock market and real estate deals over the dinner table. When kids from the ghetto enter college and the workplace, they don't know a thing about what they hear. And they are never told exactly what their commitment to their own neighborhoods must be.” He established a non-profit organization in his name The Deacon Jones Foundation in Los Angeles in 1997 to assist young people and the communities in which they live with a comprehensive program that includes education, mentoring, corporate internship, and community service. Pinto told the Sentinel that the foundation was idle for the past year due to the failing health of Jones and is not certain what the future of the organization holds. In the NFL he was a giver, of tremendous pain as a defensive lineman who is known for inventing the now outlawed head slap he utilized to get to the
Jones played for the Los Angeles Rams from 1961-1971, as a San Diego Charger from 1972-1973, and finished his career in 1974 as a Washington Redskin. In the world of football, Deacon is most well known as the man who coined the term ‘sack.’ He was named the “Secretary of Defense” by Los Angeles fans, the “Most Valuable Ram of All Time,” by the Los Angeles Times, and has been recently named as “Defensive End of the Century” by Sports Illustrated. He was unanimously voted to the NFL's 75 Year All Time Team and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. As a personality in both radio and television, Deacon is almost as well known for his humor, candor, charisma, and interesting and knowledgeable assessment of the game. He tells it like it is. Deacon's media and broadcasting credentials are numerous and include a range of venues, from countless television appearances on shows like “Up Close”, ''Hardcore Football”, “Monday Night Live”, and “Pro Magazine”, to being a member of the Los
quarterback. But, in life he was a generous soul who never forgot where he came from and although not a native here, he fit right in after his playing career was done. Jones also had several small acting roles both during and after his playing career. He was a guest star on a handful of television shows -- including episodes of “Bewitched,” “The Brady Bunch” and “The Odd Couple” -- and appeared in the 1978 Warren Beatty film “Heaven Can Wait.” “He was honest and some of his comments were outrageous but also true. He was very confident and thoughtful. I can’t think of a bad memory about him,” said Pinto. “Deacon Jones was one of the greatest players in NFL history. Oơ the field, he was a true giant,” said Redskins general manager Bruce Allen, whose father, George, coached Jones with the Los Angeles Rams. “His passion and spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him. He was a cherished member of the Allen family and I will always consider him my big brother.” “Deacon Jones has been the most inspirational person in my football career,” said former teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Jack Youngblood. Jones made the Pro Bowl every year from 1964-70 and played in eight overall. He combined with fellow Hall of Famer Merlin Olsen, Rosey Grier and Lamar Lundy on a defensive line that at times was unblockable. Olsen died in March 2010 at age 69 and Lundy died in February 2007 at 71. Grier, who is 80, is the only surviving member of the Fearsome Foursome.
Angeles Rams broadcast team as color analyst and personality on Fox Sports Network's “NFL This Morning.” Football fans love the intimacy and behindthe-scenes insight that Deacon brings to the game. He has appeared on virtually every television and radio sports talk show in both the U.S. and Canada. Marketing, corporate imaging, and public relations have been Deacon's forte since he left the game. He has worked for companies as diverse as the Miller Brewing Company, Hagar Slacks, Pacific Coast Medical Enterprises, and Epson America, and represented the NFL and Champion Products as spokesman for their Throwback campaigns. He was in constant demand as a motivational speaker at corporate sales meetings and special events. Deacon was chairman for AstraiZeneca Pharmaceuticals in their national hypertension awareness program, “State of the Heart,” represented the NFL with their licensees and advertisers, and is a favored guest on all television and radio stations. Deacon's recent trip to Iraq to visit the troops has added another dimension to what he does and where his interests lie. He has agreed to join forces with General Franks in an eơort to pay homage and lend support to the families of the military men and women who have been either killed or wounded in action. Deacon has received numerous awards for community work, in particular, his work with youngsters and youth organizations.

Is the recovery ‘Redskins’ name is ‘Not something to be made sport of ’ stumbling or soaring? BY LARRY BUFORD LAWT CONTRIBUTING WRITER Before the late Washington Redskins owner George Preston Marshall died in 1969, he reportedly vowed the team name would never be changed. Thirty years later a 1999 court decision to change the Washington Redskin’s name was overturned. Now ten members of Congress have signed onto a letter requesting again the name change. The letter written to team owner Dan Snyder reads in part, “For decades now, Native American leaders and organizations have been advocating an end to the use of “Redskin” as your organization’s “brand” because it is derogatory, demeaning and offensive.” In a news segment on MSNBC, Native American Suzan Harjo – President and Executive Director of Morning Star Institute – said of the letter, “It gives everyone an idea that the last word does not come from
signees – nine of which are democrats and one a republican – critics say Congress is over-stepping and there are more important things they should be doing. They also say that a name change would only open a floodgate to name changes for other professional teams such as the Cleveland Indians. Additionally, in the letter the representatives argued, “Native Americans throughout the country consider the ‘R-word’ a racial, derogatory slur akin to the ‘N-word’ among African Americans or the ‘W-word’ among Latinos.” The representatives sent similar letters to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and FedEx President and CEO Frederick Smith, as well as to the owners of the NFL’s 31 other franchises. There is the question of whether the issue even matters to the majority of Native Americans. A 2004 University of Pennsylvania National Annenberg Election Survey found that only nine percent (9%) of

Many people are tired of the racist name in the Washington D.C. area…it’s associated with the nation’s capitol, and how awful to have a racial slur against us here.” A statement from team owner Dan Snyder read “We’ll never change the name. It’s that simple. NEVER!” In the same MSNBC segment Dave Zirin of Edgeofsports. com – when asked how a name change might affect the team – said, “It’s not the money because I think if they change the name the merchandise rewards they would receive would be immense. And if you ask Dan Snyder, be prepared for an ugly answer because [he] is a rather loathsome human being…his popularity in D.C. is only slightly below that of plague. Although the overall unemployment rate still exceeds 7 percent, and the official Black unemployment rate is greater than 13 percent, there are some who insist that there is a robust economic recovery in progress. Ex-Auburn player indicted Rumors of ‘Money’ Mayweather’s big bet in point-shaving scheme MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -Former Auburn point guard Varez Ward has been arrested for allegedly trying to fix games and offering money to teammates to help during the 2011-12 season. U.S. Attorney George Beck Jr. said that Ward was arrested Monday on counts of bribery relating to a sports contest and conspiracy for allegedly trying to fix the point spread for the Tigers’ game against Arkansas on Jan. 25, 2012. A federal grand jury indictment last week of Ward was unsealed Tuesday. The one-page document did not list alleged co-conspirators but said the scheme continued after that game. Beck said Ward offered to pay teammates to participate in the point-shaving scheme, which was investigated by the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service. No attorney for Ward was included in the filing, and the number at the address listed for the player was disconnected. Clark Morris, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney’s office, said Ward was released Tuesday on $2,500 unsecured bond and had his arraignment set for Thursday in Montgomery. Ward came off the bench in the 56-53 loss to Arkansas but crumpled to the floor after playing only 19 seconds with an apparent leg injury. Auburn coach Tony Barbee later said Ward took a knee to the right leg he had injured early in his sophomore season with Texas, when he ruptured his quadriceps tendon on a dunk during pregame warm-ups. Auburn still covered the 9 1/2-point spread, but prosecutors said “Ward’s scheme was to make sure that Auburn ultimately lost the basketball game.” Ward could face up to five years

Fixing games not only hurts teammates, but hurts the fans and all viewing public.” Ward was suspended before a Feb. 25, 2012 game, also against Arkansas, and didn’t play for the Tigers again. He was averaging 9.0 points a game and leading the Tigers in assists. “It is obviously an extremely seri-
ous situation anytime allegations of point shaving are made,” Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said in a statement. “When this matter was brought to our attention in 2012, Auburn immediately reported what we knew to the FBI, the NCAA and the SEC. Since this matter is a pending criminal case, it is not appropriate for us to make any further comments.” In a 68-50 loss to Alabama on Feb. 7, Ward scored three points and had six turnovers while playing 17 minutes. Vegas Insider said Alabama was favored by five points. Ward was hot in a three-game stretch in between when he scored 53 points, including 24 against Mississippi State.
Brian Shaw in high demand by Clippers and Nets LAWT NEWS SERVICE Now that the Pacers’ season is finally over, associate head coach Brian Shaw is about to become very popular. With head coaching vacancies still in a few different places, Shaw's name has been popping up with regularity. He hasn’t been able to interview for any job, though, because the Pacers were competing in the Eastern Conference finals. As we mentioned a couple of days ago, Shaw’s name sits atop the Clippers’ wish list and according to ESPN.com, he remains their target. Shaw is going to have choices, though. According to Yahoo Sports the Nets have received permission to speak with Shaw as he's emerged

as their primary target as well. Ken Berger of CBSSports.com confirms the Pacers permitting Shaw to speak with the Nets. The Clippers are also said to be focusing on Jeff Van Gundy, Alvin Gentry, Byron Scott and possibly Lionel Hollins. For the Nets, along with Shaw names like Van Gundy, Hollins and even Larry Brown have popped up. Shaw has come up short on a couple of head coaching jobs, most notably the Lakers, but it would seem that he’ll be in charge of a team by the time this offseason ends. The Clippers decided not to retain Vinny Del Negro after the season with his contract expiring and the team making a disappointing first-round exit.
Las Vegas sports book directors are notoriously tight-lipped about their customers’ wagers, and rightly so. They’re particularly circumspect when it comes to reports of big-money wagers made by celebrities. So there is no way of telling whether the otherwise innocuous tweet posted on Twitter by @Pregame_Steam that superstar boxer Floyd Mayweather bet more than $5.9 million on the Miami Heat minus-7 to defeat the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 is true. Yahoo! Sports was unable to reach Mayweather or Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, to verify the report. Mayweather frequently tweets photos of his betting slips. Usually, but not always, the tweets are of winning tickets. In a fascinating Sept. 12, 2012, story on Grantland. com, writer Dermot Hunt noted that between August 2010 and February 2012, Mayweather tweeted photos of 46 betting slips totaling nearly $3.9 million in wagers. According to Hunt’s recordkeeping, Mayweather won all 46, making a profit of $3,938,722.87. If Mayweather did make the bet on the Heat and he won, he'd earn a profit of $6.49 million. [Related: Here’s one career gamble Floyd Mayweather Jr. should take] Several persons connected with Las Vegas sports books who did not want their names used said they think it unlikely Mayweather made such a monster wager. Significantly, though, none of them would completely rule it out as a fabrication. Lorenzo Fertitta, whose family owns Station Casinos in Las Vegas, wouldn’t totally rule out the large wager. “That would surprise me [he got down such a big bet in Las Vegas], but you never know,” Fertitta told Yahoo! Sports. One Las Vegas sports book director, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he doubted Mayweather’s ability to bet that much on one game in the city. “I don’t [think it’s true],” the

Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather bookmaker said of the huge bet. “The only place that gave him sizeable wagers was Cantor [Gaming] and I’ve heard they cut many players way back. I don’t think if he bet that at every book in town he could get that much, and we haven’t taken anything here.” The beneficiary here, clearly, is Mayweather. He’s worked hard over the last eight years to develop the ‘Money’ persona that has made him rich and famous beyond his wildest dreams. Being associated with making an almost-$6 million bet further enhances that image he's worked so long to build and burnish. If the Heat win by eight or more points tonight, it would be work checking Mayweather’s Twitter feed to see if he posts a winning ticket. I’ll choose to be skeptical until there is proof. There were multiple reports in 2008 that Mayweather made $20 million to appear in Wrestlemania, though veteran reporter and industry insider Dave Meltzer said he believes the real payment was less than $3 million. The point is, Mayweather is masterful at crafting the image of himself as essentially the Warren Buffet or Bill Gates of boxing, but how much of it is true is never easy to discern. With Mayweather, though, you never know for sure. And that’s why he’s a winner whether the story is true or not. It simply adds to and builds the legend.

Kirk Franklin headlines Attorney: Paris Jackson hospitalized but OK Sunday Best at BET Experience BY ANTHONY MCCARTNEY ASSOCIATED PRESS
Franklin Brings ‘Church’ to BET Experience
Kirk Franklin BY CORA JACKSON-FOSSETT LAWT RELIGION EDITOR The musical genius of recording artist Kirk Franklin headlines the Sunday Best Stage at the BET Experience at L.A. Live on June 30 at 12 noon. Entitled ‘Kirk Franklin & Friends,’ the concert features Grammy winners Donnie McClurkin and Karen ClarkSheard along with her daughter, Kierra ‘Kiki’ Sheard of The Sheards. In addition, rising stars Amber Bullock, Joshua Rogers and Le’Andria Johnson will perform. All three were past gospel competition winners on BET’s Sunday Best TV show and recently released chart-topping albums. The L.A. Sentinel will also participate in the BET Experience by presenting ‘A Taste of the Taste of Soul’ that will showcase a wide range of vendors. “I was excited to be a part of this. It will be an inspirational morning of good music and celebration,” said Franklin, who serves as host and co-executive producer of ‘Sunday Best’ and participates in BET’s annual ‘Celebration of Gospel’ program. “To me, it’s a great concept that they [BET] are doing, to create a weekend of festivities for people to get a whole taste of the culture of Black entertainment,” he said. Urging the greater Los Angeles community to attend, Franklin noted, “I think that anytime we, as people of color, can get together and do something positive, that uplifts, a genre of a particular art form that we don’t get to see all the time, then we should celebrate and support it because it’s ours, something that belongs to us. “When you look at a lot of art forms, they were originated by our people, for our people, to celebrate
our people. Not only does it make sense, but it can also make dollars. “It’s something that will continue to show companies, sponsors and just the culture that entertainment from our people is alive and well and it’s something that can be invested in.” Investing in gospel music has certainly been fruitful for Franklin, who began his professional recording career in 1992. Over the years, he’s garnered multiple Dove, Stellar, and BET Awards as well as nine Grammys. Franklin has also sold-out venues during tours with his choirs and with leading gospel artists such as Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, Cece Winans, Trinitee 5:7, TobyMac, Souljahz, and Mary Mary. Last year, he joined with McClurkin, Marvin Sapp, and Israel Houghton for ‘The King's Men Tour’ that packed concert halls across the country. Achieving such incredible fame may lead some performers to have elevated opinions of themselves, but Franklin remains humble and focused on Christ. “The legacy to the gospel music industry that I hope to leave is that ‘he was a nice guy and he lived what he sang and wrote about. He wasn’t one way in front of the people and another way when nobody was looking.’ I hope that’s what people see,” he said. Franklin’s legacy will definitely include the tremendous catalog of songs he’s written and performed that are now standards in the Black Church. Initially, his music was labeled ‘Christian hip hop’ or ‘urban contemporary,’ however Franklin discourages categorizations of his music. “To be honest, I don’t really try to even describe it. I just try to do music that talks about my love for Jesus and try to encourage people. {See KIRK FRANKLIN, Pg. 14}
The 15-year-old daughter of Michael Jackson is physically fine after being taken to a hospital early Wednesday, an attorney for Jackson’s mother said. Perry Sanders Jr. wrote in a statement to The Associated Press that Paris Jackson is getting appropriate medical attention and the family is seeking privacy. “Being a sensitive 15 year old is difficult no matter who you are,” he wrote. “It is especially difficult when you lose the person closest to you. Paris is physically fine and is getting appropriate medical attention. Please respect her privacy and the family’s privacy.” Sanders declined further comment on Paris' condition or the circumstances that led to her hospitalization. Fire and sheriff’s officials confirmed they transported someone from a home in Paris’ suburban Calabasas neighborhood for a possible overdose but did not release any identifying information or additional details. Paris frequently posts messages about her life on Twitter, where she has more than a million followers. One of her most recent posts was from the Beatles’ song “Yesterday”: “yesterday, all my troubles

seemed so far away now it looks as though they’re here to stay.” Another post included the question, “I wonder why tears are salty?” A 20-minute video of the teen applying makeup was posted to YouTube last week. Paris says on Twitter she doesn’t know how the video, in which she repeatedly asserts, “I am so weird,” ended up on the site. “I hope you guys liked it tho and didn’t think i’m too crazy,” she wrote. “i get weird when i’m not around people lol.”
Katherine Jackson shares guardianship of her son’s three children — Paris and her brothers Prince, 16, and Blanket, 11 — with the singer's nephew, TJ Jackson. Messages left for TJ Jackson’s attorney were not immediately returned. “We appreciate everyone’s thoughts for Paris at this time and their respect for the family’s privacy,” said a statement from Eric George, an attorney for Debbie Rowe, Paris’ biological mother. Paris’ uncles Tito, Marlon and Jackie echoed that sentiment in their statement Wednesday: “Thank you for the outpouring of concern and support for Paris — she is safe and doing fine. We truly appreciate you respecting our family’s privacy at this time.” Michael Jackson kept his children out of the spotlight during his lifetime. After his death from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol in June 2009, the children took on a more public life, beginning with their father’s memorial service, which included Paris’ tearful goodbye to her father. She has expressed interest in starting a singing career, has plans to star in a movie, and has been featured in different magazines. Her older brother Prince was a guest correspondent earlier this year for “Entertainment Tonight.” {See PARIS JACKSON, Pg. 15}

AEG Live CEO: Jackson lawsuit is extortion attempt

The head of AEG Live told a jury on Monday that he believes a lawsuit filed by Michael Jackson's mother against the concert promotion company was a baseless extortion attempt. CEO Randy Phillips also said the company bears no responsibility for Jackson's 2009 death, as his mother contends. Katherine Jackson is suing AEG Live LLC, claiming it failed to properly investigate the doctor who was later convicted of her son's death. AEG denies wrongdoing. Phillips said he agreed with statements attributed to him and defense attorney Marvin S. Putnam that the case was a shakedown. “Yes or no, answer? Yes,” Phillips said in response to a question by Katherine Jackson's attorney Brian Panish. Phillips is the highest-ranking AEG executive to testify in the case, now in its sixth week. He will likely be asked about numerous emails he sent and received {See JACKSON LAWSUIT, Pg. 15}

Workmen sweep in front of a new mural honoring The Roots, Friday, May 31, 2013, in Philadelphia. As a teen growing up in Philadelphia, Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter got busted for graffiti and was ordered by a judge to clean up such vandalism by painting murals. Now, Trotter and his Grammy-winning band The Roots are scheduled to attend Friday the unveiling of a city-sanctioned mural in their honor. BY KATHY MATHESON ASSOCIATED PRESS (AP) — The Roots are officially living large in their hometown. Members of the house band for NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” in New York returned to their roots in Philadelphia on Friday for the dedication of a multistory mural in their honor. The massive artwork occupies the back wall of a charter school on the street where the Grammy Award-winning band once busked for change after its founding in 1992. “This is an amazing turnaround that on South Street we’re getting immortalized some 21 years later,” Roots drummer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson said. The mural, titled “Legendary,” is a colorful collage of images including portraits, cassette tapes and musical instruments that traces the history of the hip-hop group. It's one of more than 3,600 pieces of art created by the city’s Mural Arts Program. The project’s unveiling came a day before The Roots Picnic, an annual music festival in the city hosted and curated by the band. In a few weeks, Thompson’s memoir

“Mo’ Meta Blues” will be released. Mural Arts Program executive director Jane Golden praised the project's paint and design team, which persevered through numerous complications. The original location, about eight blocks away on the same street, fell through. “What you see behind me right now is beautiful,” Golden said. “We think and we hope that we captured the wonderful spirit of The Roots.” When plans for the mural were first announced in November 2011, Roots co-founder Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter noted how he once got busted for graffiti as a teenager and a judge ordered him to clean up such vandalism by painting murals. Trotter called the punishment “scrub time.” On Friday, he said it was great to see his life come full circle. “It hits close to home for me that this is in south Philadelphia. This is my part of town,” Trotter said. “It’s an honor and a blessing.” Thompson, too, said he was proud. “This is one of the greatest moments of our career,” he said. “I’ve forever driven the streets of Philadelphia wondering, when are we getting our mural?” ily together in the midst of 20 years of doing music. That’s a very major thing to be celebrated. A lot of marriages don’t survive this business,” observed Franklin, who cites his favorite scripture as Romans 8:28. “To be able to still have a beautiful wife and kids who still call me ‘Daddy’ and see me as a part of their fabric, that’s the most successful thing I think I’ve ever accomplished.” For more information and to purchase BET Experience concert tickets, visit BETExperience.com.

CITY OF LOS ANGELES
{Continued from page 6} opportunity to understand how to lead by making an emotional connection instead of by authority. “That helped me become a better leader over time as I was able to adapt and realize that diversity is key in leadership. It makes you a stronger leader. And, at the end of the day it’s all about making your people better, being able to have resources, answering questions for your people, providing the connections for people so they can improve, then your team is going to get that much better overall…” Simmons main focus is how Bank of America can stay connected to its customers. While some see Bank of America as a large corporation, Barry works with his team to ensure that customers build relationships with the financial advisors at the banking centers to ensure that our community is aware of the variety of product offerings at the bank. This is especially important as banking becomes more digitized. Barry and his team are focused on customer service and have continued to add key specialists to help customers through life’s major financial decisions. Simmons’ unique approach to an automated dominated industry that can lack a personal connection, has been instrumental in BOA increasing its share of customers in Los Angeles’ diverse communities. Simmons works with his team to foster a sense of connectivity. He has made it a point to get down to the ground floor and out to the different banking centers every week for at least three days a week to make sure that his team is delivering to customers what they want and need. His teams also hold customer feedback sessions in bank centers monthly. “We bring customers into a conference room and we just talk about their experiences, real life experiences that they’ve had with Bank of America, whether it is banking center specifically or any other experiences,” he said. “Customers are not shy and I love it. They will tell you exactly what is on their minds and they will tell you the truth. We’ve had customers come in and say, ‘I love your banking center, etc. but I need someone to help me with more complex needs.’” “And that’s what my group is focused on. Those are the obstacles that I’m trying to say, ‘yes we can.’ We just need to make sure our associates are empowered to escalate that to the right people.” Besides making life better for the bank’s customer, Simmons says Bank of America is also committed to financial literacy throughout Los Angeles. The bank recently launched www.BetterMoneyHabits.com to help consumers develop tools to help manage their personal finances. “We’re focusing on a non biased financial education that can benefit anyone. We’ve partnered with the Khan Academy, a leading educational non-profit, to develop BetterMoneyHabits.com. We encourage our consumers, non customers and customers alike to visit this site because they have educational videos from anything like how to build savings, how
to manage credit, how to budget, which we think are going to be a tremendous value to all consumers.” Bank of America has partnered with the National Foundation of Credit Counseling to hold financial seminars in select banking centers throughout Los Angeles. The seminars will be hosted after hours and the content will be focused on helping consumers to better simplify and manage their finances. There are upcoming financial seminars at Brotherhood Crusade on June 12th, and at banking centers on MLK/Western and in Compton on June 11th and 13th. “Because when you think about the educational environment in general we know that is a major need. And, it is a specialty of ours. It’s our corporate responsibility to give back and really invest in financial education. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling’s 2013 Financial Literacy Survey found that consumers gave themselves grades of C, D or F when asked about their knowledge of personal finance. We’ve got to make sure that we’re focused on delivering that knowledge to the community.” “We want customers from the time they get their first savings account, to their first job, to retirement… the life cycle. That’s the kind of relationship we want,” Simmons said.
Paris Jackson {Continued from page 13} In recent months, Paris has reconnected with her mother, with whom she has had little contact for most of her life. The children are listed as plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed by their grandmother against concert giant AEG Live LLC, who she claims is responsible for her son’s death. Katherine Jackson’s lawsuit claims AEG failed to properly investigate the doctor convicted of causing the singer’s death, and pushed the superstar to rehearse and perform a planned series of 50 comeback shows titled “This Is It.” Paris and Prince are listed as potential witnesses in the case, which is in its sixth week of trial. Katherine Jackson's trial attorney, Brian Panish, declined comment Wednesday morning on Paris Jackson's condition. Her hospitalization came hours after AEG Live’s CEO Randy Phillips told a jury that he believed the lawsuit was a shake-
