Senator Price hosts Sixth Annual “Tribute to SHeroes” ceremony Senator Curren D. Price, Jr. held his Sixth Annual “Tribute to SHeroes” Awards Ceremony on May 6, during which he honored 26 exemplary women from his district. The event was held at the Olympic Collection in West Lost Angeles. A “SHero” is a woman who has demonstrated leadership, pride, volunteerism and commitment to her community in a remarkable manner. Nominees are neighborhood activists, artists and community and business leaders: women who make a substantive difference in the lives of others but may not always be recognized for their contributions. At the awards ceremony, each SHero was escorted down an aisle to Senator Price, who presented each honoree with a certificate from the California State Senate and a red rose. Then each honoree was photographed with the senator. During the presentation, a mistress of ceremonies read a short biography on each SHero. This year’s mistress of ceremonies was KTLA’s Michaela Pereira, who has served as M.C. for four of the six SHero ceremonies. Natalie Cole, founder/CEO/ publisher of Our Weekly newspaper gave an inspirational speech, and Rev. John Cager from Second AME in Los Angeles delivered the invocation. There was also live entertainment provided by the Elegant Flair International Dance Company, and a violin trio performed during the luncheon, which drew more than 300 people. To arrive at his list of SHeroes, Senator Price solicits nominations from former SHeroes, local elected officials, chambers of commerce, neighborhood

councils, homeowners associations and the communities of his district at large. Senator Price also honored Maria Elena Durazo from the L.A. County Federation of Labor with the “Rose
Award” for her many years of public service. The Rose Award recognizes one special SHero who has made a remarkable difference in the Greater Los Angeles area.

Black frats form super Army replaces 1st female PAC to mobilize voters head of drill sgt school Ques and Nupes unite to support Obama’s re-election

1911 United leaders: Sinclair Skinner (Nupe) and Che Sayles (Que). Washington, D.C. – Members of the Kappa Alpha Psi (Nupes) and Omega Psi Phi (Ques) fraternities have united to campaign for the re-election of President Barack Obama. Both historically Black frats celebrated their centennials in 2011, which led to several members forming a separate organization, 1911 United. Unlike other super PACs, 1911 United’s mission does not include using funding support to exaggerate or expose negative images of other political parties but instead focuses on empowering, equipping and educating Black communities in the voting process to help re-elect President Barack Obama. A “super PAC” is a new kind of political action
committee (PAC), which was created in July 2010 following the outcome of two court decisions that held that government may not prohibit unions and corporations from making independent expenditures for political purposes. The decisions also held that contributions to groups that make only independent expenditures could not be limited in the size and source of contributions to the group. 1911 United is one of only two super PACs in support of President Barack Obama. However, by law, 1911 United cannot coordinate directly with President Obama. The group, which is based in Washington, D.C., See BLACK FRATERNITY, page 15
BY SUSANNE M. SCHAFER | ASSOCIATED PRESS COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The Army is replacing the first female commander of its prestigious drill sergeant school, it announced Wednesday, just days after it lifted her unexplained six-month suspension. Even so, Command Sgt. Maj. Teresa King says she will remain in the service and work to restore her reputation. The Army unit in charge of training said May 4 that King was reinstated after a sixmonth investigation, whose grounds were never revealed. Fort Jackson, the base near Columbia where the drill sergeant school is located, announced Wednesday there will be a change of command ceremony on Thursday. King last month filed a complaint that she was targeted because of sexism and racism. King, who is Black, will be replaced by a man. The Army named her successor as Command Sgt. Maj. Michael McCoy, who last served with an infantry battalion at Fort Benning, Ga. King said her Army superiors have turned aside her request to delay the change of command ceremony and denied her request to remain in the post for the six months she was suspended, she said. “Justice is going to happen,” King told The Associated Press this week. “It’s going to hurt, but it's going to happen.” The Army never explained what it was investigating when it suspended her Nov. 29, nor did it offer a full explanation when she was

Deputies: Fla. mom killed 4 kids, then herself BY KYLE HIGHTOWER | ASSOCIATED PRESS PORT ST. JOHN, Fla. (AP) — In the middle of the night, Tonya Thomas’ neighbors awoke to the sound of a gunshot and moments later heard a knock on their door. Three of Thomas’ four children were outside, including one who appeared to have been shot. Before the neighbors could offer help, Thomas came out of her house and called the children back home. They complied. The neighbors dialed 911 after hearing more gunshots. Brevard County Sheriff’s deputies found Thomas, 33, dead of an apparent self-inflicted wound and three of her children — Jaxs Johnson, 15; Jazzlyn Johnson, 13; and Joel Johnson, 12 — were fatally shot inside the house. A fourth child, Pebbles Johnson, 17, was found shot to death in the front yard of a neighbor’s house. Investigators said they didn’t know a motive for the shooting and weren’t sure why the children followed their mother’s orders to return to the house. “From what the neighbors said, she was very calm. She walked out and called them back. They turned around and walked back to the house,” said sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Tod Goodyear. Another neighbor told deputies Thomas sent a text message in the middle of the night saying she wanted to be cremated with her children. “He didn’t see the text until he woke up this morning,” Goodyear said. The shooting happened in Port St. John, about 15 miles west of Cape Canaveral in an area known as the “Space Coast” because it is the home of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, the location of numerous shuttle launches. Authorities went to Thomas’ house on three successive days last month, according to dispatch records released Tuesday. In the first visit, on Easter Sunday, Thomas

The next day, she called to report that her son had kicked and punched her when she tried to wake him up for school. The Department of Children and Families was following up on a report on a Johnson child who had been released from a detention facility and hadn't been picked up by a caretaker, DCF spokeswoman Carrie Hoeppner said in an email. President Barack Obama at Barnard College New York, NY – President Barack H. Obama delivered the keynote at Barnard College’s 120th Commencement ceremony, held on Columbia University’s South Lawn. Addressing approximately 600 members of the class of 2012, he said, “We know we are better off when women are treated fairly and equally in every aspect of American life — whether it’s the salary you earn or the health decisions you make. After decades of slow, steady, extraordinary progress, you are now poised to make this the century where women shape not only their own destiny but the destiny of this nation and this world. Now more than ever, America needs what you, the class of 2012, has to offer. America needs you to reach high and hope deeply.” “Clearly, Mr. President, you know
something that the 594 Barnard graduates seated proudly here before you are well on their way to discovering — that there is no opportunity they cannot embrace, no dream they cannot make real. You have demonstrated this truth through your own amazing story, your own compelling example, your own irrepressible spirit,” said Barnard President Debora L. Spar, in a speech presenting President Obama with the Barnard Medal of Distinction, the college’s highest honor, alongside Helene D. Gayle ’76, president and CEO of CARE USA; Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry; and Sally Chapman, Barnard professor of chemistry. Prof. Chapman, who was unable to attend, was represented by her sister Diana Chapman Walsh, former president of Wellesley College.

4th annual congressional art competition winners announced Compton and Watts take top honors in Congresswoman Laura Richardson’s 4th Annual Congressional Art Competition Washington – With art programs constantly under assault in school systems, the 2012 Congressional Art Competition stands in stark contrast to this national trend. The artwork received this year serves as a reminder that art programs are a necessity when it comes to educating today’s youth. Congresswoman Laura Richardson had the honor of judging the 4th annual 2012 Congressional Art Competition for the 37th district. Art work was submitted from, Compton, Watts, Long Beach and Carson. The winning entry was submitted by the Valedictorian of Compton High
School, 11th grader Alejandra Chavez. She submitted a painting of Frida Kahlo who was a Mexican painter and is perhaps best known for her self-portraits. June 20th Ms. Chavez will fly to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Congressional Arts reception at the U.S. Capitol where her artwork will be on display June 2012 – May 2013. “Receiving first place in the Congressional Art Competition has been the biggest honor in my life,” said Ms. Chavez. “This is the first time that anyone has ever given me recognition for my artwork. In high school no one ever takes my artwork serious. This win
Congresswoman Laura Richardson and district teachers who worked with all of the students to submit artwork to the Congressional competition proves that my artwork can take me wherever I want to go,” said Ms. Chavez. "I am proud to support the art program that represents so many in the communities that make up the 37th District," said Congresswoman Laura Richardson. “We were fortunate to partner with the Long Beach museum. Many of the student artists in attendance have never been to a museum or near the ocean which is less than 20 miles away. There attendance at the Congressional Arts reception to honor
their artwork is an achievement and stands as a testimony to the committed teachers and parents who brought their students to the reception,” said Congresswoman Richardson. “The quality of the artwork at the reception was amazing,” said Congresswoman Laura Richardson. “Given the fiscal crisis facing inner-city school districts, and arts programs being reduced or even eliminated, I applaud the teachers who thoughtfully worked with such talented young people to create these magnificent works of
art,” said Congresswoman Laura Richardson. The second place winner is Christopher Valencia from Watts. He attends Animo Locke Tech High School (Inner Circle Youth Program). His winning entry was Blue Sky with a Grand Cathedral and Park in View. This picture reflects Mr. Valencia’s view; freedom of religion in America (One Nation Under God) and will be on display in Congresswoman Richardson’s Congressional office in D.C. Kobe: I don’t take charges BY JEFF LATZKE | ASSOCIATED PRESS OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Lakers star Kobe Bryant says he doesn’t take charges, and he’s got a reason for it. Based on his own analysis of NBA greats from Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen to Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, Bryant believes there’s too much of a health risk to get run over by an opponent and go crashing to the floor repeatedly. “I learned from my predecessors, man,” Bryant said Tuesday. “Pippen had a (messed) up back taking charges. Bird had a (messed) up back taking charges. “I said, ‘I’m not taking charges.’ I figured that (stuff) out at an early age.” The five-time NBA champion says no one ever presented the theory to him that he could prolong his career if he didn't try to draw offensive fouls against his opponents. It was just his own observations. “I’ve seen them take charges and lay there with a messed-up back. I’ve seen Michael not take one ... charge and he's healthy his whole career, and the same thing with Magic,” Bryant said. “I might not be the smartest guy in the room but I can figure that (stuff) out.” The topic came up after the Lakers
forced only four Oklahoma City Thunder turnovers in a 119-90 blowout loss in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals. The NBA record for fewest turnovers in a game is three. Oklahoma City had averaged a league-worst 16.4 turnovers in the regular season, but Los Angeles had the fewest steals and forced the least turnovers. Bryant rejected the idea that the Lakers should try to extend their defense and disrupt Oklahoma City’s passes and said: “We’re not a passing-lanes kind of team. We’re a pack-it-in type of team.” Yet he also doesn’t AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki think Lakers are willing to stand in the way Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant believes it’s when opponents come too much of a health risk to get run over by an charging in. opponent and go crashing to the floor repeatedly. “We’ve got a couple guys that take charges, but for the most est in learning. ANTONIO ‘ MAGIC MAN’ TARVER
Above-par superstar flying under the radar BY KENNETH MILLER LA WATTS TIMES CORRESPONDENCE Move over Magic Johnson: Another ‘Magic Man’ cometh to the Southland for a world championship date on June 2 at the Home Depot Center. But unlike the Los Angeles icon, Antonio Tarver is flying under the radar. The 43-year-old Tarver hails from a Floridian inner-city, where he has overcome all of the negative elements that are staples in other American inner cities: son of a single mother, poverty and substance abuse. For the many just like him, there are usually just a few avenues to take: jails, institutions or sports, and Tarver discovered all of them before reaching his comfort zone in the sport of boxing. While scholarships in basketball as a 6' 2" shooting guard and fleet-footed quarterback on the football field were clear options, he took to the unscripted violence in the sport of boxing. After lacing up the gloves once and for all in 1979, a willful, albeit headstrong Tarver was inspired by the trophies many of the other neighborhood boys were coming home with from the Southwest Boys Club in Orlando. “The uniforms, the pretty robes they had … and all those trophies!” he told Sports Illustrated at the time. Tarver’s mother Gwendolyn subsequently moved the boy she called ‘Man’ from the strife and worsening neighborhood of Orlando to where he had options to play more traditional team sports, but boxing was in his blood by then. In 1996 Tarver was America’s best hope for a gold medal at the Olympics held in Atlanta but settled for bronze at the advanced age of 27. The year before, he went undefeated and won the prestigious Pan Am Games title, the U.S. Championship and the World Championship. There has never been a single fighter to achieve those accomplishments in American amateur boxing. So why then isn’t the name Antonio Tarver among the most recognizable fighters in the world today? Why doesn’t his name pop up with the likes of Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones Jr. or Floyd Mayweather? “When you look at my record, five-time world champion and the only fighters I lost to but didn’t avenge the defeat was Hopkins and Chad Dawson, how can you argue with that success?” Tarver told the L.A. Watts Times during an exclusive interview from his Tampa
training site this week. His comeback to boxing, following a starring role as Mason Dixon in the ‘Rocky’ film, was supposed to lift his brand and propel him into superstardom in the sport, but it did not. A dominating 9th round TKO over the once-heralded Danny Green during his latest comeback was downgraded when Green was KOed in the fight following Tarver. When he became the first fighter to KO Jones Jr., it also was downgraded when everyone Jones Jr. fought after Tarver seemingly knocked him out. If he were Floyd Mayweather, they’d say Jones. Jr.’s down fall was a direct result of what Tarver did to him, but the ‘Magic Man’ does get such respect. So on the first Saturday in June, Tarver is defending his IBO cruiserweight title against undefeated Nigerian slugger Lateef Kayode (18-0, 14 KO) to potentially add to his Hall of Fame resume. Tarver has more knockouts than Kayode has fights 20 and has compiled a 29-6 record after turning pro at the late age of 28. When the reporter suggested that because he started pro so late and has not endured the brutal wars in the ring as others that perhaps he might be the freshest 40-plus fighter in the game, he said: “I agree with you, but 43 is 43. I am old school. I have an 84-year-old trainer, Jimmy Williams, who is the best in the business and doesn’t get the respect that he deserves. A lot of fighters don’t know what I do. I don’t fight to get hurt, I fight to hurt people.” Sounds familiar? When I suggested that if I didn’t know it, I would feel as though I was interviewing Mayweather, he agreed — to a point. Both are outstanding defensive fighters, both are quick without one punch knockout power and both use their mental awareness as much as their skill set. “Floyd is a great business man and picks the rights fights, but I want to see him fight Manny Pacquaio while they are both still relatively in their prime. Then he would be considered one of the greatest fighters in history,” explained Tarver. See ANTONIO TARVER, page 14

get to the basket, and a clutch, coldblooded instinct in the fourth quarter — that separated him from the others. Cavs coach Byron Scott knew Irving was special long before he made his pro debut. “The day we brought him in for his individual workout before the draft, I thought he was definitely the best player that we had,” Scott said. Still, Irving’s first season, delayed because of the league’s labor lockout, began with some doubting whether he was deserving of the top pick or if Cleveland had made a mistake. Irving had played in just 11 games at Duke because of a toe injury. It didn’t take him long for him to show the Cavs made a perfect choice. “When they drafted me, there were a lot of questions about my toe and everything, would he live up to the hype or whatever,” he said. “I didn’t pay any attention to all that, just being in these closed doors helped me have a vision and be focused every single day. I wasn’t the most heralded No. 1 pick. I had my own goals and I had my own team goals.” Irving made spectacular moves and game-winning shots and earned MVP honors at the Rising Stars game during All-Star weekend in Orlando. But when asked what moment stood above all the others in a magical first season, Irving had a surprise answer. It came, of all places, in a huddle during a timeout at Indianapolis. With 4.4 seconds left and the Cavaliers tied 84-84 with the Pacers, Scott, who has formed a tight bond with his young star point guard, drew up a play for Irving to take the last shot even though he was playing just his third game as a pro. “I was surprised,” Irving said. “We kind of knew each other. CHICAGO (AP) — The doctor who operated on Derrick Rose’s knee insists the Chicago Bulls’ star can dominate again. It will take time, though. Rose faces a recovery of eight months to a year. The assessment by team physician Dr. Brian Cole on Tuesday means the point guard could return around midJanuary to early February, or miss next season. The doctor added there is a chance Rose could be back sooner, but “we’re not going to rush it.” The Bulls had already said Rose has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Cole said there were also two tears in his meniscus cartilage. He said Rose is “doing great,” that the surgery went “extremely well” and he can still be an explosive player. “It’s impossible to predict tomorrow,” Cole said during a news conference at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center. “Statistically, he should be that player and then some. That doesn't mean he's guaranteed. It’s a whole lot better than we were accustomed to years ago. The ligament is one thing and the meniscus is another. Getting all the things to heal appropriately is really our goal in the early phases. Then, it’s rehab, conditioning — getting his brain connected to his knee, basically.” General manager Gar Forman insisted the Bulls won’t rush Rose, that they are more focused on the long-term than the short-term hit they’ll take without him. The GM is “hopeful” and “optimistic” his franchise player will return next season but isn't sure he will. “In putting this team together, everything was looking at the big picture, long term,” Forman said. “I think it’s our job to stay focused on that and to continue to look at what we feel is a long window of opportunity to have success and that’s how we'll approach it.” Rose had surgery on Saturday after being injured two weeks earlier in Chicago’s playoff-opening win over Philadelphia, a major blow for a team eyeing its first championship since the Michael Jordan-Scottie Pippen era. The Bulls simply weren’t the same without their superstar point guard and bowed out in six games, making them the fifth top seed to lose to an eighth seed. See DERRICK ROSE, page 19

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) — Once Kyrie Irving finished cracking jokes, thanking Cleveland’s fans, his teammates and coaches, he looked down from the podium at the person who promised this would happen. He was the NBA’s Rookie of the Year. “This award is for us,” Irving said to his father, Dred, who raised his son after his wife, Elizabeth, died 15 years ago. “We’re bringing it back home and we’re going to put it right on the mantle and we’re going to put some flashing lights on it so it shines throughout the whole entire house.” This season, Irving shined brightest. The 20-year-old ran away in voting by a nationwide media panel that could have handed in ballots with two months left in the season. There was really no other choice. Irving received 117 of 120 possible first-place votes from writers and broadcasters and finished with 592 points, more than three times as many as Minnesota’s Ricky Rubio (170), who finished second despite missing most of the season with a knee injury. Denver’s Kenneth Faried (129) was a distant third. Faried, San Antonio’s Kawhi Leonard and New York’s Iman Shumpert received the other first-place votes, stopping Irving from joining Blake Griffin (2011), David Robinson (1990) and Ralph Sampson (1984) as the only players to win the award unanimously. Irving played beyond his years and above everyone’s expectations — including his own — this season when he routinely took over games in the fourth quarter and renewed the hopes of a Cleveland franchise still putting together the pieces after LeBron James left as a free agent two summers ago. Irving always felt the award was within his reach. “It was a goal of mine,” Irving said. “I kept it on the back burner. I knew as long as we won games and we beat great teams that it was going to come.” The first pick in last year’s draft, Irving led all rookies — and the Cavs — in scoring with 18.5 points per game. He also led first-year players in field-goal percentage (46.8), was second in assists (5.4) and became one of just six rookies in league history to average at least 18 points and five assists. However, it was the other elements of his game — a nasty crossover dribble, a fearless desire to

An Open Letter to President Obama Concerning Gay Marriage from Pastor Bobby Scott
With all due respect, Mr. President, your position to advocate redefining marriage is dangerously wrong. If I may, please let me, as carefully as I can, clarify my position so that I am not misunderstood as a hate-mongering bigot. The Bible teaches that God made male and female equal, in His likeness, and different by design so that a male and a female could unite in one flesh and procreate. Even atheists agree that any definition of marriage must include a male and female. Today, those affirming marriage between a male and female are not trying to discriminate against anyone’s rights. They are seeking valid compelling answers to the questions: why change the definition of marriage? and on what moral basis should it be changed? Contrary to the contention of the left, love alone is not enough to validate the radical position of overthrowing the God-given, ageless definition of marriage. If love is the sole criterion for marriage, then would the left call all Americans who oppose polygamy hatemongers who want to deny polygamists their right to happiness? All societies must place some boundaries around the definition of marriage, and no modern society has so radically sought to alter that definition as America today. Second, as an African American, I am stunned that you would cloak gay marriage with the heritage of
civil rights. The legal protection that homosexuals have today strongly argues against any need to classify homosexuals as a group that warrants the special legal attention granted to blacks through the civil rights movement. Yes, it is evil when homosexuals are bullied and attacked for being gay. BUT what court (for that matter job, school, media outlet etc.) in America would not prosecute such perpetrators of that bigotry with anything less than the full weight of the law? How does that remotely compare to the smiling-in-court, cigar smoking, celebrating murderers of Emmett Till who walked out of court FREE?! It is simply wrong-headed to try to equate the legal status of both groups. Finally, Mr. President, as a professing Christian, you should know from the Gospel that while Jesus loves all sinners (homosexuals & heterosexuals), He is also Holy and He does not allow sinners of any to sort define what is right in their own eyes. Jesus calls all sex outside of the monogamous covenant union of marriage between one man and one woman sin. Jesus’ loving response to sinners was to pay the debt that we never could and to give His righteousness to all who believe in Him as a gift of His grace. So any heterosexual or homosexual who turns from their sin to trust exclusively in Him, Jesus will save. Mr. President, I pray that you will see the error of your decision and reaffirm what you once said you believed and all the cultures of human history have affirmed—marriage is the covenant union designed (not evolved) by God between one man and one woman.

GAY MARRIAGE the debate continues
(New York, NY) - Reverend Al Sharpton, President of National Action Network, along with Julian Bond, Chairman Emeritus of NAACP, Melanie Campbell, President and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, and Reverend Dr. Joseph Lowery, Civil Rights Icon and President Emeritus of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, released an open letter today embracing President Obama’s position on equality for gay and lesbian individuals in this country. This followed several calls today between faith and civil rights leaders organized by Rev. Al Sharpton and NAN to encourage a civil debate on this issue and to encourage all individuals to keep all issues of import to our communities in mind in the days ahead. ------------------------------------------------------------------May 11, 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” As leaders in today’s Civil Rights Movement, we stand behind the President Obama’s belief that same sex couples should be allowed to join in civil marriages. eradicating poverty, all issues of deep and abiding concern for our communities. President Obama stated his view that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. This is a view that we concur with, because as civil rights leaders we cannot fight to gain rights for some and not for all. At the same time, we acknowledge that the President stated his personal opinion, which everyone is entitled to both those
who agree with him, like us, and those who disagree. The President made clear that his support is for civil marriage for same-sex couples, and he is fully committed to protecting the ability of religious institutions to make their own decisions about their own sacraments. There will be those who seek to use this issue to divide our community. As a people, we cannot afford such division. It is our hope that conversations on strengthening African American families continue in a civil and respectful way, on all sides, both with those who support the ability of same-sex couples to marry, and those who do not. We are glad that President Obama has joined Dr. Joseph Lowery, Dr. Julian Bond and so many others in full embrace of equality for gay and lesbian indi-
viduals in our country. We also welcome the civil debate on this issue that will surely spring. And we encourage all individuals to keep all issues of import to our communities in mind in the days ahead, and we seek to secure equal justice, opportunity and dignity for all God’s children. Lookin’ good: Jazz drum master Jack DeJohnette turns 70 BY JOY CHILDS Herbie Hancock reached the BIG 70 in 2010, Chick Corea last year, and this August, jazz drummer Jack De Johnette hits that milestone. Just like former band mates Hancock and Corea, reaching this milestone has in no way lessened his mastery of his primary instrument. (He’s also a gifted pianist.) In fact, this past January he was recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts as a 2012 Jazz Master recipient. It’s the nation’s highest honor in jazz and goes to living legends. DeJohnette is being recognized for his extraordinary contribution to advancing the jazz art form and for serving as a mentor for a new generation of young aspiring jazz musicians. He’s widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers in modern jazz for a wideranging style that confirms his superior abilities as a bandleader or a sideman. His collaborations are legendary.

Chuck Brown, pioneer of ‘go-go’ funk music, dies BY BRETT ZONGKER | ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON (AP) — Chuck Brown, who styled a unique mix of funk, soul and Latin party sounds to create go-go music in the nation’s capital, has died after suffering from pneumonia. He was 75. Brown died Wednesday at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. Hospital spokesman Gary Stephenson confirmed Brown had died after a hospital stay that began April 18. Thanks to Brown and his deep, gravelly voice, go-go music was uniquely identified with Washington. That’s where he continued to play the city’s club circuit to a loyal audience late in life. Mayor Vincent Gray said the city will be a different place without Brown. “Go-go is D.C.'s very own unique contribution to the world of pop music,” he said. “Today is a very sad day for music lovers the world over.” In 2007 Brown told The Associated Press that go-go was influenced by sounds and fast beats he heard early in life, growing up in North Carolina and Virginia, combined with his experience later, playing with a Latin band. “Go-go is a music that continues on

Go-go was heavy on percussion with drummers as lead players, accented by guitar riffs, keyboards and horns. Sometimes they would play for two or three hours without stopping. In between tunes, Brown would keep the
thunk of percussion going and talk to the crowd. Brown’s hit “Bustin’ Loose” with his group, the Soul Searchers, helped define go-go's sound. It spent several weeks atop the R&B chart in 1979. Rapper Nelly later sampled Brown’s “Bustin’ Loose” in 2002 for his massive See CHUCK BROWN, page 14

FEMALE DRILL SGT Continued from page 4 The decision to reinstate King came several days after she filed a legal complaint. The decision was made by Maj. Gen. Bradley May, the deputy commandant of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. May also told her this week she could not remain in her post, Smith said. Smith said he fears that the Army is going to force King to retire in August, when she becomes eligible after more than 30 years in the ranks. King was featured in national television reports and newspaper headlines in 2009 when she was tapped to head the Drill Sergeant School at Fort Jackson, the Army’s largest training installation. About 60,000 soldiers are trained annually at the post. That includes half the Army’s male soldiers and more than 60 percent of its female soldiers, increasing the need for female drill sergeant trainers. Just this week, the Army opened thousands of jobs to female soldiers by loosening restrictions meant to keep them away from the battlefield. Experience on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan showed women were fighting and dying alongside male soldiers anyway. King said she believes the complaints against her came from those who found her too rigid, when she was following instructions to hold drill sergeants to high standards. And criticism that she had never been deployed in combat is unfounded, she said, because she went where the Army sent her. Once, while posted at Fort Bragg with an airborne unit, she was held back from a combat deployment because she was a woman. Instead, she was sent to jobs in Europe and Washington, D.C. “I’m not afraid of combat, heck no. I just went where the Army told me,” she said. King and Smith said they intend to

I just knew that when he told me it was a high screen and roll, I was like, ‘I’m going to do my best to get to the basket.’ ” Irving’s left-handed layup rolled out, and the Cavs lost in overtime. But Irving knew that from that moment on that the Cavaliers were his team and that Scott expected him to lead them. “Just him having that confidence in me was a steppingstone for me,” he said. “It was a learning experience, and I needed it.” A month later in Boston, with his father sitting courtside, Irving made up for the miss at Indiana. With the Cavs down by one, Irving, ignoring his failure in the previous situation, drove to the basket, split two defenders and flipped in a left-handed layup to beat the Celtics. Irving arrived with none of the superstar trappings. There was no entourage or multimillion dollar shoe contract, no cameras chronicling his every move. He often tossed the praise on others and minimized his role in victories. “One of his biggest attributes — you can ask all of his teammates — he’s willing to give up a little bit of himself for the greater good of the team,” said general manager Chris Grant. “That’s truly what makes great leaders. That’s what makes great people and great players.”

A spokesman for the Training and Doctrine Command, which is in charge of the drill sergeant school, said the Army is still looking into King’s allegations but would not respond to them in detail in a public forum. “While the Army takes seriously any and all allegations of racism and sexism, Command Sgt. Maj. King’s
concerns are being carefully reviewed, and appropriate action will be taken if and as warranted,” said Harvey Perritt, spokesman at the Fort Eustis, Va., TRADOC headquarters. Asked about the change of command, Perritt pointed out that the Army “has determined that it is in the best interests of the Drill Sergeant School that she relinquish her duties as commandant this Thursday, May 17. This date reflects a normal tour length and is based on the arrival of the incoming commandant.”
Irving appears to be the major piece the Cavs can build around, and they plan to get him some help next month with three of the top 34 picks in the draft. “He’s great and the way he carries himself is really remarkable,” said Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, who opened his downtown casino Monday night. “He’s
20 years old. He can’t have a drink legally or come into our casino but he can do everything else.” Irving, too, is excited about the future in Cleveland. “I know what we’re building here is something special,” he said, “and I’m here for the long haul.”

Two years earlier, she filed a domestic violence complaint against Joe Johnson, but that was dismissed after a hearing. Jamie Hudson, whose mother lives two doors down from the family, said the boys in the family were known to shoot BBs at a home across the street and had threatened to set it on fire. “It has been an ongoing problem on our street with them,” Hudson said. Goodyear said Jaxs Johnson had recently been arrested on a domestic violence charge. He said he didn’t know if the boy had been accused of hitting his mother or causing damage at the house.
Austin Lewis, a 16-year-old classmate of Pebbles Johnson, said the family “had problems like everybody else but nothing that drastic.” He described Pebbles Johnson as “very loving and caring.” “Always with a smile,” Lewis said. “Didn’t let anything affect her. She was always in a good mood.” A pastor at the church the family attended described it as “normal stuff.” “I think he was punching some walls or something,” said Jarvis Wash, pastor of the Real Church in Rockledge, Fla. Wash said the family attended services last Sunday but had been absent for a few weeks before that. “I don’t know what could have happened in the past couple of days,” Wash said. “It’s a tragedy to the church and the community.”

CHUCK BROWN Continued from page 13 hit “Hot in Herre,” which won Nelly a Grammy. In 2007, rapper Eve sampled Brown’s song, “Blow Your Whistle,” in her hit single “Tambourine.” Brown told the AP he admired such artists. “Go-Go had some influence on rap because a lot of rap musicians come to my shows,” he said. “Some of them were students at Howard University. People like Puff Daddy — he’s been to see us when he was a young Howard University student.” Spike Lee, a fan of Brown’s, used go-go for his movie “School Daze.” “Chuck Brown Will Always Be ‘Bustin’ Loose’ — the Godfather of GoGo,” Lee said through a spokeswoman. When he was younger, Brown spent some time in jail. While behind bars, he traded five cartons of cigarettes for his first guitar. After he was freed in 1962, Brown played with several bands and then formed the Soul Searchers. To

comply with terms of his parole, they couldn’t play where alcohol was served, so they went to churches, recreation halls and youth centers. Brown’s daughter, Cherita Whiting, said he had died from complications with pneumonia and was gone too soon. “I just want to tell all his fans, thank you, for lovin’ our dad,” she said. “He had the best fans in the world.” During the crack epidemic of the 1980s, violence in some clubs affected go-go’s reputation. Brown said “we can’t blame the go-go for that,” though. More recently, he said he had seen more grandparents at his shows, with an audience ranging in age from 18 to 60. In 2005, he was named a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts. Washington was always his most loyal fan base, Brown told the AP, and he was happy to play here the rest of his life.
Ironically, Kayode called out Tarver after a Showtime telecast in which Tarver served as analyst. “I had the opportunity to comment on a few of his fights on Showtime. He’s definitely an up-and-coming champion, but he has loopholes in his game. I stated that on the air, but he took it personally and called me out for a fight. He’s got nothing to lose and everything to gain,” Tarver told L.A. Watts Times.

The elusive acclaim and respect that Tarver deserves is still haunting. One fight in one night may not obtain it for him. However, if you look at his complete body of work, the numbers are there for him to be considered among the elite fighters of his generation and, by and large, a Hall of Fame fighter. After all, it’s like we’re talking Mt. Rushmore here. That is where Tarver feels President Obama belongs. DEJOHNETTE Continued from page 13 groups to receive crossover attention, which also alerted the world to Keith Jarrett's skills. And if you’ve seen piano virtuoso Jarrett anywhere around L.A. over the last 25 years, then you’ve also caught DeJohnette keeping the beat going in the hugely popular Keith Jarrett/Gary Peacock/Jack DeJohnette Trio for all those years. The drummer is also known for his cutting-edge collaborations: his “Parallel Realities” CD, which led to a muchacclaimed tour with Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny. DeJohnette's drumming, though originally influenced by both predecessors and contemporaries — including Max Roach, Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Art Taylor, Rashied Ali, Paul Motian and Tony Williams — has long drawn from sources beyond “jazz.” In fact, for more than 30 years ago, DeJohnette was already describing his work as “multidirectional music.” He’s played with virtually all the jazz masters — including Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis. Dig out your Davis’ “Bitches’ Brew” album and you’ll see DeJohnette’s name on the album that changed the direction of jazz forever, even causing Davis to say in his autobiography, “Jack DeJohnette gave me a deep groove that I just loved to play over.” DeJohnette himself says that working with Davis led to collaborations with Chick Corea. In honor of his 70th birthday, he’s heading a trio composed of Corea and Stanley Clarke at Catalina Bar and Grill through Sunday night — one he himself deemed a “special trio.” For more information, call Catalina Bar and Grill at 323-466-2210.

to fall in the first round. Rose averaged 21.8 points and 7.9 assists but had trouble staying healthy after capturing the MVP a year ago. He missed 27 games because of groin, back, toe, foot and ankle problems that the team does not think led to the ACL tear. “This could be anything from a completely random event — which in a non-contact injury, most of the time that’s what it is — to maybe conditioning, Cole said. “We’ll never know with certainty. My feeling is it's more likely than not a very random even that happened. If you watch the video, you can see ... the forces are just right to tear the ligament. He also pointed out that Rose did not tear the medial collateral ligament,
making the preparation for the surgery easier. Cole said patients generally start running about three months after surgery, and trainer Fred Tedeschi said players start shooting around that time. From there, they progress to cutting activities and increase the workload from there. Whether Rose spends part of his offseason working out in Los Angeles as he usually does or stays in Chicago, Tedeschi said the Bulls will have someone with him monitoring his rehab. Cole also said Rose should play once he’s ready, that he doesn’t necessarily recommend sitting out the season as a precaution. “There’s a lot of benefit to playing when he’s safe, DERRICK ROSE Continued from page 9 Chicago was closing out a 103-91 victory in Game 1 and Rose was showing his MVP form when everything changed. He came to a jump stop in the lane with about 1:20 left and his leg buckled. He went up again and passed to Carlos Boozer in midair before crashing to the court, sending a chill through the arena. That certainly wasn’t what the Bulls envisioned after capturing home-court advantage throughout the playoffs for the second straight season despite a long list of injuries. They were eyeing another big run after losing to Miami in the Eastern Conference finals last season, but with their leading scorer sidelined, they made an early exit, becoming the second No. 1 seed in two years
he has to go 40 minutes, that's a different story. Just getting out there and playing when he’s able, that’s when his exponential growth is going to come. Lots of athletes go back and play at a very high level but not necessarily initially at the level they were pre-injury. The Bulls were a different team in the playoffs once Rose went down, after going 18-9 without him in the regular season. Making matters worse, they lost center Joakim Noah to a sprained left ankle in Game 3 and fell into a 3-1 hole before injecting some drama back into the series. Besides the injuries to Rose, they were without Richard Hamilton for most of the year because of a variety of ailments.
Then, there’s All-Star Luol Deng. He played a significant portion of the season with a torn ligament in his left wrist and has said several times that he plans to represent Britain at the Olympics in London. Forman basically sidestepped questions about that, saying, “We want to sit down with him and have that conversation with him and our medical staff. I think it would be premature to speculate on anything until we’ve had a chance to sit down with him. Obviously, we know it's very, very important to him and we want to support our players. The biggest thing is Luol's health. Forman also said the Bulls will exercise their contract option for next season on coach Tom Thibodeau and will try to negotiate a new deal.
