Author’s Book Tells Story of ‘Hellhound’ on MLK’s Trail BY CHRIS TALBOTT AP ENTERTAINMENT WRITER

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Author Hampton Sides was not sure about the guy who said he had an interesting archive all about the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Amateur archivist Vince Hughes, the man with the documentation, thought Sides might be just another one of those nuts with a conspiracy

theory to shop. Sides already was well into his research for a book, using all the usual historical sources, when he finally called Hughes. He found an astounding collection that helped turn his new book, “Hellhound on His Trail,” into something special. Though King’s life and death are well-tilled soil for historians, Sides took a new approach, crafting a compelling and unique narrative history of the stalking of King and the ensuing manhunt for his killer. It is as much thriller as history book, and the compulsive story races along like a fugitive on the lam. The book is rapidly climbing best-seller lists. Hughes’ collection was a mostly unmined vein of historical detail that truly brought his book and the petty-criminal-turned-assassin James Earl Ray to life. Take, for example, the roll of film Hughes had from the evening of April 4, 1968, the day King, the most powerful figure in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, was shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn. The iconic picture of King’s entourage pointing in the direction of where the bullet came from is memorable, but the rest of the roll had never been published. The first picture shot by a South African photographer covering King’s visit was of the Nobel Peace Prize winner and civil rights leader as he steps onto the balcony. The next 12 minutes play out frame by frame. “Then, finally, you get to the picture of all the guys pointing,” Sides said. “So you can almost reconstruct the narrative of what was going on. You can see firemen coming in from the fire station, jumping

Aurtisha Jackson is a 30-yearold, occasionally homeless, unemployed single mother of three — with two of her kids currently under a doctor’s care. Twice a week, her son, 11-yearold JoDariyen, walks into the doctor’s office at White Memorial Medical Center to undergo immuno therapy, receiving a shot in each arm to combat his many allergies, including allergies to trees, grass, mold and dust mites. The fifth-grader, who has had the condition since he was 5, has to participate in the same medical procedure for up to five years, his mother said. Prior to his diagnosis, JD, as he’s called, was often in and out of the emergency room every three or four months with red eyes, a swollen throat and labored breathing. Turns out he also has asthma. His 2-year-old sister, Maliya, is on a daily antibiotic and awaiting an operation to correct an abnormality involving her kidneys. Their 6-yearold sister, Christina, is in good health. When the family was homeless and the kids needed a doctor, or JD had to receive treatment, Jackson would either catch a bus, walk to a hospital, or, during emergencies, get a taxi voucher from the shelter to get there quickly. Some trips could take up to three hours, minus the stint at the hospital. While it sounds laborious, that was only a small part of Jackson’s homeless reality. But she doesn’t complain. Jackson didn’t let the fact that she was homeless stop her from getting her children’s needs met. She did research, found out about MediCal, found a shelter and mapped out routes for buses, walks and taxis.

CANDIDATE PROFILE: CALIFORNIA ATTORNEY GENERAL San Francisco District Attorney Kamala D. Harris is a candidate California Attorney General. When Harris won election as San Francisco’s District Attorney in 2003, she became the first African American female to ever hold the post of District Attorney in the history of California. If elected to the office of California Attorney General, Harris would become the first woman and the first African American in California to hold the post. Kamala D. Harris From the day she took office as district attorney, Harris had a new vision for law enforcement, aiming to ensure consequences for those who commit crime in our communities. In addition, she has created new prosecution units focused on child assault, public integrity and environmental crimes. THE USUAL — Eleven-year-old JoDariyen gets a shot in his arm recently. The fifth-grader undergoes immuno therapy for his many allergies. His mother, Aurtisha Jackson, has been homeless in the past and has to take care of another daughter with a health issue. When the family was homeless and the kids needed a doctor, Jackson would either catch a bus, walk to a hospital, or, during emergencies, get a taxi voucher from the shelter to get there quickly.

“When your child is sick, you don’t think about the steps you need to take to get them to a doctor,” said Jackson, who last month was given the use of a car by her father. “You don’t think about it. You just do it. You’re just thankful your children have health care and can see a doctor.” With President Obama’s health care reform law often in the news, as well as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposed state budget cuts, Jackson, who had a hysterectomy last year and has had three blood transfusions in the last five years, is grateful she and her children have Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal, which is a vital link for children who have no other access to affordable health coverage, insures millions of children in California. The number of California children who were uninsured all or part of the year rose from 1.1 million in 2007 to about 1.5 million in 2009, the UCLA Center for Health Policy

Research reports. “I don’t know all the numbers,” said Jackson, who until May 2009 lived in the Lydia House at the Long Beach Rescue Mission and currently lives in Torrance. “But I know things are bad. I’m just grateful. When I was in the shelter, I always kept my faith. I’m a firm believer. He (God) said He would meet our needs and I believe him. I do know that if anything changes, I could be stuck.” Jackson, who doesn’t work because of the hectic doctor’s appointments for her two children, said she often doesn’t have two pennies to rub together. She counts health care coverage as a priority and a blessing because she knows her circumstances could be worse. The St. Louis native knows she’s doing better than the thousands of others who are part of Los Angeles County’s homeless statistics. NEWS IN BRIEF THE SOUTHLAND City Council Approves $6.7 Billion Budget (AP) — The Los Angeles City Council has approved a $6.7 billion budget for the 2010-11 fiscal year that eliminates 761 jobs, unless concessions are made by the city’s unions. The council voted 11-4 on May 17 for the budget that cuts childcare workers’ positions, shortens library hours, increases the cost of parking tickets, and institutes 26 furlough days for city workers. The council kept an animal shelter in the San Fernando Valley open and restored $1.3 million in funding for parks and gang intervention programs. The cuts are scheduled to go into effect July 1. If the city finds more revenue from leasing its parking garages, fining banks that don’t keep up

foreclosed homes, and increasing transfer taxes, there will be fewer layoffs. But without more revenue, more layoffs could come in October.

Outcry as Council Holds Off on Rent Hike Ban (AP) — The Los Angeles City Council has voted to send an emergency rent control ordinance back to com<None>mittee, and the move brought a series of outbursts and scuffles with police from angry activists. The 10-5 vote on May 21 made it unlikely that the proposed four-month ban on increases in many of the city’s rent-controlled buildings will go into effect by its intended date of July 1. Currently landlords in rent-controlled buildings can raise rent by 3 percent in July. City officials say two men and

OPINION The Media and the Race Trips up Rand Paul Too Murder of Aiyana Jones EARL OFARI HUTCHINSON

BY SIKIVU HUTCHINSON

Kentucky GOP Senate candidate Rand Paul may or may not learn what his father Ron learned. And that is: When you pop off on the always-thorny issue of race, there’s a consequence. The horrid thing is that the consequence might not be the same for Rand as it was for dad. The senior Paul and his backers went apoplectic during presidential campaign 2008 when it was amply and correctly pointed out that Ron Paul’s official newsletter was stuffed with unabashed racial jibes and barbs. The newsletter bashed Martin Luther King Jr. as a “pro-communist philanderer.” It declared that the 1992 L.A. rebellion petered out “when it came time for the blacks to pick up their welfare checks.” And it branded black males as “the criminals who terrorize our cities — in riots and on every non-riot day.” And then it assured the reason for that is they were genetically engineered “to hate whites and to steal and loot as much money from the white enemy as possible.” An outraged Ron Paul vehemently denied that he uttered the vile racial slurs and claimed that he did not know they were said or written by him or anyone else in his camp. The colossal problem with his denial was that the racial bile appeared in his officially approved newsletters. There wasn’t evidence then or later that he wrote a correction, clar-

ification, or publicly disavowed or fired anyone who had written that content in the newsletter — if that was even the case, as he hinted. Ron Paul had to denounce the racially loaded quips in 2008 because for a brief moment he was deliriously embraced by thousands as the populist alternative to the supposedly hopelessly corrupt, boughtand-paid-for, corporate-interest Democrat and Republican presidential candidates. Paul’s fanatic backers’ mix of blind adulation and desperation meant more media and public scrutiny than he had ever gotten. That, in turn, meant that his past, or alleged past words, were now wide open for public dissection and accountability. The senior Paul knew that he had to indignantly deny he wrote or uttered anything that could be construed as fanning racial bigotry. The issue quickly faded mostly because Paul’s presidential candidacy quickly faded. Things may be different with Rand Paul. There’s his widely quoted smoking-gun interview with The Courier-Journal in which he blew off the 1964 Civil Rights Act as a slap against private businesses’ right to racially discriminate. He had a second and third chance to eat his words in two separate interviews after his primary win. He blew both. He did the obligatory disavowal of racism, but did not back away from his belief that the

Civil Rights Act went way too far in telling private businesses they couldn’t racially discriminate. Junior Paul, unlike dad, is suddenly a national figure and counted on by legions of revved-up Tea Party activists to carry the party flag into battle against President Obama. Rand hasn’t disappointed. He made it clear that he’ll pound Obama and his agenda at every turn. Even if Rand, as his dad, didn’t trash the Civil Rights Act, his odd mish-mash of ultraconservatism and libertarian pronouncements would mark him as racially suspect. A cornerstone of the jumble is his view of government and what it should or should not do about civil rights. Rand, as Ron, holds that government should have minimal or, better still, no role in civil rights laws and enforcement. The government passed and enforced civil rights laws, did nothing to solve the country’s racial ills, and worse, fueled even more racial polarization, he says. That old, worn and thoroughly discredited view warms the hearts of the packs of closet bigots who pine for the old days when racial and gender discrimination were American norms and government did little to protect black and gay rights. Rand pretty much said the same thing in The Courier-Journal interview. Any other time and place in See HUTCHINSON, page 4

Immigration Reform Will Bring Economic Recovery for All Americans BY ELIAS FEGHALI

Fixing our broken immigration system is vital to America’s economic recovery. As our economy shrinks, state governments are desperate for revenue. Without additional sources of funds, they are increasingly making the decision to cut important social services, raise taxes, or even worse, lay off hard-working state employees. Recently, Tennessee laid off 850 workers (the Department of Intellectual Disabilities took the biggest hit, along with children’s services). Gov. Phil Bredesen called these cuts “unfortunate, but necessary” to keep Tennessee afloat. Although there is no silver bullet for our economic troubles, an important source of revenue and economic growth is available to states across the nation if we have the foresight and resolve to reform our immigration system now. It is no secret that there is an underground labor force in this country. For more than 20 years, the immigration system has grown increasingly out of sync with the needs of a healthy economy, and immigrant workers have been lured here through an immigration system designed to fail. The government sends these workers mixed messages, making it

dangerous and expensive to cross the border, yet issuing taxpayer numbers and collecting taxes once they get here. The vast majority of these immigrants come to work honest jobs and create a better future for their families. Instead, they are often exploited by bad-apple employers and left without a pathway to citizenship. Rather than continuing to enforce policies that aren’t working, what if we gave these folks a chance to get on the right side of the law, while securing our borders and reforming our laws so that this doesn’t happen again? Imagine the economic impact of millions of immigrants paying their back taxes and a fine to register with the government. Imagine the new revenue generated when these immigrants can finally buy insurance, earn a driver’s license and purchase a car. Imagine the benefit for American workers when bad-apple employers can no longer exploit these immigrants to bring down wages. Every day we delay reforming our immigration system, we suffer economically. According to University of California, Los Angeles researcher Raul Hinojosa-Ojeda, legalizing immigrant workers would contribute $1.5 trillion to the nation’s produc-

tivity over 10 years, as more tax revenues are collected, wages increase for U.S.-born and foreign-born workers alike, and immigrants spend more in our economy. There are some who would argue that reforming our immigration system is unnecessary. To them, all we need to do is enforce the law, deport millions of immigrant workers, and hope our unemployment numbers shrink as a result. Unfortunately, there are two main problems with this plan. First, unemployment is a critical problem facing our nation. Millions of Americans are out of work and struggling to keep their families afloat. That’s why we shouldn’t take it lightly by suggesting that mass deportations would solve our problems. It is unrealistic to think that unemployed GM workers from Smyrna, Tenn., can pack up their families, take a bus to Georgia, and harvest crops as migrant farm workers. What we need are real middleclass jobs. We need better opportunities for everyone. We need stabilization in the economy, and immigration reform is a huge part of that. Second, we have tried the enforcement-only approach. That See FEGHALI, page 4

When a little white girl goes missing, online news, supermarket tabloids and cable network stations bombard us with up-to-the-minute dispatches on the crime, the victim, her shattered family and anguished community. When a little black girl is murdered in cold blood by a big city police department, it’s up to the community and those who care about social justice to ensure that the case doesn’t fade into the national obscurity that is usually reserved for the lives of people of color. The recent killing of 7-yearold Aiyana Jones by the Detroit Police Department during a raid while she was sleeping in her home is the kind of atrocity that makes many people of color view the police as an occupying army. According to news reports, Detroit police were conducting a raid that was being filmed by an A&E reality show. Neighbors informed the police that there were children in the home, but their pleas were ignored. Searching for a suspect who lived in another apartment unit, officers fired into the home from outside, then lobbed a grenade into the house, killing Aiyana. By exercising a so-called “noknock” policy in the city’s poorest neighborhoods, the Detroit police’s criminal disregard for human life and the civil liberties of people of color have kept the community under siege. According to Ron Scott of the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, Detroit police have been under a federal consent decree but continue to use military-style raids that terrorize black citizens. Tragically, Aiyana’s murder also comes on the heels of a recent CNN study about the impact of skin-color bias on young children.

CNN presented the findings of Margaret Beale Spencer, a psychologist who utilized the same “doll-test” technique as that of psychol- Sikivu Hutchinson ogists Kenneth and Mamie Clark in 1947. The Clarks’ research documented the destructive impact of racism on black children’s selfimage and was used in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case. Spencer asked black and white children to identify the child they believed had negative traits in a drawing featuring children of different skin colors. The majority of both black and white children found the darker-skinned child to be the “dumb,” “bad” and “unattractive” one, and identified the lightest child as possessing the most desirable traits. The association of whiteness with normalcy, power, attractiveness, worth and desirability is reinforced by mainstream media, the dominant culture, families and children’s peers. Because there is often little in their home lives, school curricula or peer networks to counter this message, some children of color and most white children receive the constant message that whiteness is superior. White parents who claim that they are raising their children to be “colorblind,” and reflexively dismiss focusing on racial or cultural differences as “promoting racism,” simply reinforce the dominant culture’s racist inscription of whiteness as the unspoken norm. Adults who ignore the very real and damaging overvaluation given to white or lighter skin in marketing and advertisements — as well as in film, video and TV See SIKIVU, page 11

BUSINESS Top Reasons to do Estate Planning BY ATTORNEY WILLIAM K. HAYES

People have many different reasons to do estate planning. Some people plan diligently and well in advance of any urgent need. Other people procrastinate and plan only when things are thrust upon them. What are you waiting for? Here are some of the top reasons estate planning attorneys say motivate their clients to plan or update their existing plan: • Vacations. People want to relax without worrying about “what ifs.” But you don’t need to wait for a vacation to get rid of this worry. • Weddings. When a couple is starting a new life together, they want to start off right and make sure the other is taken care of. • Divorce. Most people no longer wish to benefit their exspouse after a divorce. • Births and adoptions. A new child is a joyous occasion. People want to make sure there is a solid foundation for their new bundle of joy. Even if they already have a plan, they want to make sure that the plan is suitable now that their family has grown. • Funerals. The death of a close friend or relative can make people realize their own death

will eventually happen, and they would rather it happen on their own terms. Often, people see firsthand the anguish caused by poor planning and want to make sure they don’t leave behind an emotional and financial mess. • Inheritances. When people inherit money, it often changes their estate plan. They consider how to divide the newfound wealth and what they want to leave as their legacy. • Health changes. A significant deterioration in health often makes a person’s mortality more “real.” They want to make sure their loved ones are taken care of in case their health further declines. Of course, planning in advance would remove that worry and focus their energy on spending time with loved ones. • Law changes. Changes in the law can affect what would happen to the estate. New opportunities appear from time to time, while other opportunities disappear. People update their plans periodically to take advantage of these opportunities while they can. The bottom line is that people do estate planning to take care of their loved ones and to ensure the legacy they envision will come to pass. When you die, will your

Jury Acquits Man in Killing of Rapper (AP) — A jury acquitted a man of killing up-and-coming Atlanta rapper Dolla during a shooting last year at a crowded, upscale Los Angeles mall. Jurors on May 21 rejected prosecutors’ contentions that the killing of Dolla, whose real name was Roderick Anthony Burton II, was a callous act of apparent revenge. Burton and his accused shooter, Aubrey Louis Berry, had been involved in a fight at an Atlanta club less than two weeks before the shooting last May. Berry’s attorney had contended the shooting was an act of selfdefense, emphasizing that Burton — a protégé of hip-hop artist Akon — glorified a violent gangster lifestyle in his rap lyrics and online videos. Berry, who has remained jailed since the May 18, 2009, shooting, hugged his attorney but was otherwise unemotional after the verdict. Burton’s mother, Dayna Robinson, sobbed.

FEGHALI Continued from page 2 has basically been the strategy of every president since Ronald Reagan. In that time period, we’ve increased the dollars spent on immigration enforcement. Yet the number of undocumented workers has increased every year. It is unrealistic to suggest that we could or should devote our limited resources to trying to identify and deport more than 10 million people, while leaving some of their children and spouses alone to fend for themselves. If the anti-reform lobby has its way, we will spend hundreds of billions of dollars trying to do just that. Worse yet, if successful, this policy would shock local economies, resulting in $1.8 trillion in annual lost spending, $651.5 billion in annual

HUTCHINSON Continued from page 2 recent American politics would instantly make him unfit to hold any state or national office. And those who defend his view would be branded as bigots and crackpots. But this is not any other time or place. Rand, unlike Ron, has the most inviting and vulnerable target in Obama to level his fire. He has the cheers and backing of untold numbers who share his belief that the president is leading the country to social and financial ruin. They will do everything they can to drive him from the White House. If Rand and company have to reach back nearly half a century and dredge up a monumental piece of legislation that totally remade the racial map in America to fire up the faithful, then so be it. After all, why let a little thing

Deputy District Attorney Bobby Grace painted Berry as a killer who methodically aimed at Burton during the shooting, then ordered a valet to retrieve his rented sport utility vehicle while still clutching his gun. Defense Attorney Howard Price, however, painted a very different picture of Berry, who is college-educated, said he worked in commercial marketing, and “never killed anything” growing up. Price said Berry opened fire because Burton threatened to kill him and he feared he had a gun. The jury on May 21 found Berry not guilty of first-degree murder and all other charges, including assault with a firearm.

Attorney Denies Suge Knight Threatened Man (AP) — An attorney for Marion “Suge” Knight is denying allegations that the former rap mogul pulled a gun on a man in South Los Angeles. Knight was arrested in suburban Gardena on May 20. Police say his Cadillac Escalade was stopped after a man claimed Knight pointed a gun at him. Knight was booked for assault with a deadly weapon and on a warrant claiming he drove with a suspended license. He was released on $65,000 bail the same day. Knight’s attorney, Marc Brumer, denied May 21 that a confrontation ever happened. He says Knight pulled into a gas station and was surrounded by a crowd of admirers but See BRIEFS, page 5

In a time of economic turmoil, we can’t afford to waste our money on unrealistic policies that would hurt American workers and families. Blind enforcement of our broken immigration policies is the businessas-usual approach. What we need are workable solutions that uphold our values and move us forward together. As Congress prepares to address the most important problem facing our nation — the economy — we should hope lawmakers realize that reforming our broken immigration system is an essential part of the solution. Federal Reserve more room to keep interest rates at historic lows to aid the economy. That’s good news for borrowers, but not for savers. Record-low rates help borrowers who qualify for loans and want to take on more debt. The prime lending rate, used to set rates on some credit cards and consumer loans, is at its lowest point in decades. But low rates hurt savers. They’re especially hard for people on fixed incomes who earn scant returns on their savings. California already allows medicinal use of marijuana but would become the first state to legalize recreational use if voters approve the initiative. The poll found that Democrats and independents are far more likely to support the initiative than Republicans. Support also is higher in the San Francisco Bay area, while Los Angeles and the Central Valley remain split.

The pair eventually agreed that the author would continue writing his book at his home in Santa Fe, N.M., and call Hughes for help along the way. When Sides needed more information about Ray’s attempts to secure a false identity while on the run in Toronto, he asked Hughes, “Do you have anything on that?” And Hughes replied: “Have I ever! Here’s the picture that was taken at this photographic studio. Here’s the other photograph that wasn’t used. Look at what he’s wearing. Look at those glasses. Those are fake glasses, those horn-rimmed glasses. He’s trying out a new look.’ ” Hughes said Sides took all those loose details and turned them into something that feels real. “He actually takes you and puts you in the middle of it,” Hughes said. “When you’re reading the book you’re there. ... You really feel as though it’s surrounding you. I’m kind of proud some of that material came from my collection. I take a little sense of pride.” King’s life is among the most examined. The life of Ray, however, remains murky. Ray lied a lot, Sides said, and enjoyed leading authorities down false trails. Sides’ goal was to put aside opinion and tell the story of how Ray arrived at that rooming house across from King’s balcony, then how he eluded one of the largest manhunts surrounding a single crime in U.S. history. “The King assassination literature tends to be dominated by books that

either advance or try to debunk various conspiracy theories,” Sides said. “I think that’s the trap that much of the literature falls into. Did he do it? Did he not do it? Was the FBI involved? Just kind of sifting the charges and the countercharges. But there are no pure narratives about what happened with James Earl Ray and this event that I know of. You’re just telling the story.” It was a story Sides knew well. The assassination of King and the aftermath was one of Sides’ most prominent childhood memories growing up in Memphis. His father was a lawyer at the firm that repreLA_Watts_Times_8x5_Eng_BW.ai sented King in his fight to stage a

march in support of the city’s striking garbage workers. During a recent interview near the Lorraine on South Main Street, the busy road Ray used to make his getaway, Sides pointed out historical spots in the neighborhood and talked about a city he clearly loves. It was a dark time, and even at 6, Sides could feel the fear in Memphis. “I do remember this feeling that the city might rip apart,” Sides said. “So as a historian, someone who’s become a narrative historian, it was only natural that I would want to come back to this time and this place where I first became aware of history.” 5/5/10 4:21:40 PM Hughes also experienced that his-

tory. He was a Memphis Police Department dispatcher on duty when King was killed. He kept a copy of the radio tape from that night as a curio. In time, he decided to transfer it to CD to preserve it. A friend heard about what he was doing. “He gave me what he had, and I started crawling through people’s attics and going down to locations here, there and yon, gathering all sorts of documents and trying to bring all the investigative material to one place,” Hughes said. He has a set of the nearly unredacted FBI case file, as well as those for investigations by Scotland Yard and the Royal Canadian Mounted

Using the Bible as source material, King argues that there is only one race, the race of people, and that all differences are merely superficial ones. She believes that black people have not received sufficient recognition in American history because of prejudice, and she aims to set the record straight. Some of the inventions and contributions of blacks highlighted by King include the discovery of blood plasma and the creation of peanut butter, traffic lights and more. The author’s message in “The Legacy” is also that all groups of people have originated from just two, Adam and Eve, and all have shared in discoveries and inventions. Lawyer Airs Unpublished Intro to Malcolm X Classic BY JENNIFER PELTZ AP WRITER

NEW YORK (AP) — Decrying American race relations as a nearwar, civil rights leader Malcolm X expressed hope that his tumultuous life story could help blacks and whites, according to a never-published introduction to his best-selling autobiography. The introduction, read publicly for the first time May 19, underscores the ambition, power and foreboding of “The Autobiography of Malcolm X,” published shortly after he was assassinated in 1965. “I’m writing this book for the best interests of the Negro and the white man in America,” begins the introduction, read by a Detroit lawyer who bought it from the estate of the autobiography’s collaborator, Alex Haley. “Most sincerely I want my life story to do as much good for America and for both races as it possibly can. ... I give my life to be used to benefit America and humanity, that America will learn that the

Negro’s problem is a challenge to America’s consciousness and that the Negro is America’s problem.” The existence of the introduction, and three other unpublished chapters apparently intended for the 19-chapter political classic, has been known since entertainment attorney Gregory J. Reed bought them at a 1992 auction of Haley’s estate. Some pages have been exhibited in a Detroit museum. But Reed on May 19 read it publicly for the first time, to an audience of hundreds at the Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center. The organization was founded by the civil rights leader’s late widow and housed in the building where he was killed. It’s unclear why the introduction or the other chapters weren’t in the book, said Morgan Entrekin, who heads the autobiography’s original publisher, Grove Press. Now called Grove/Atlantic Inc., the publisher is talking with Reed about possibly releasing the unpublished sections. The introduction echoes the themes of the book, which traces Malcolm X’s evolution from a child who lost his parents to violence and mental illness, to a teenager lured into ghetto vice and crime, to a burglary convict drawn to a burgeoning black Muslim movement, and finally to a fiery voice for black empowerment. Portraying his experience as a reflection of racial oppression, Malcolm X says he aims “to end the white man’s enslavement of the black man’s mind.” Apparently written in 1964, it describes the state of American race relations as “just this side of war.” It also reflects Malcolm X’s sense that his life was at risk. “Today I have not the time to write a book merely with the ambition to excite or stimulate some readers’ minds,” he observes, foreshadowing haunting predictions of his violent death. Reed said he bought the unseen autobiography chapters, as well as the manuscript of the published book, to ensure their conservation. He spent more than $120,000, “a lot of money for me, but at the same time, it was really a steal for mankind,” he said in an interview. He has occasionally given talks about some of the material, including an unpublished chapter setting out a 13-point plan for blacks to achieve economic, social and cultural independence as a prelude to “true integration.” See MALCOLM X, page 15

THE PULSE Dramatic Surge Seen in Kids Hospitalized With MRSA

Wal-Mart Pulls Jewelry Over Cadmium

CHICAGO (AP) — The number of children hospitalized with dangerous drug-resistant staph infections surged 10-fold in recent years, a study published in the journal Pediatrics found. Disease incidence increased from two cases to 21 cases per 1,000 hospital admissions from 1999 to 2008. Most infections were caught in the community, not in the hospital. The study involved methicillin-resistant staph infections, called MRSA. These used to occur mostly in hospitals and nursing homes, but they are increasingly showing up in other settings in children and adults. The study involved 25 children’s hospitals; the 10-fold increase in hospitalizations likely occurred nationwide, said Dr. Jason Newland, the lead author and an infectious disease physician at Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics and the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Almost 30,000 children were hospitalized with MRSA infections at the hospitals studied during the 10-year period. Most had skin or muscle infections, and 374 youngsters with MRSA died. While Newland said it isn’t clear if MRSA caused those deaths, it can be deadly and is blamed for more than 18,000 deaths in children and adults nationwide each year. MRSA often begins as a pimple or boil on the skin. It can also spread to other parts of the body, including the bones or lungs, where it can cause pneumonia. (AP) — Wal-Mart said May 19 it is pulling Miley Cyrus-brand necklaces and bracelets from its shelves after tests performed for The Associated Press found the jewelry contained high levels of the toxic metal cadmium. In a statement, Wal-Mart said it would remove the jewelry while it investigates. The company issued the statement along with Cyrus and Max Azria, the designer who developed the jewelry. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. had learned of cadmium in the Miley Cyrus jewelry, as well as in an unrelated line of bracelet charms, in February, based on an earlier round of testing, but had continued selling the items. It said as recently as last month that it would be too difficult to test products already on its shelves. In its statement, Wal-Mart did not say whether it would also remove the bracelet charms. Exactly how many of the items have been sold was unclear. The charms — also available exclusively at Wal-Mart stores — were sold under the name “Fashion Accessories,” though Wal-Mart has not said when they began appearing on shelves. The Miley Cyrus jewelry hit stores in December. Long-term exposure to cadmium can lead to bone softening and kidney failure. It is also a known carcinogen, and research suggests that it can, like lead, hinder brain development in children. Cadmium in jewelry is not known to be dangerous if the items are simply worn. Concerns come when youngsters bite or suck on the jewelry.

Continued from page 1 of the year and roughly 82,000 people are homeless on any given night, according to the Institute for the Study of Homelessness and Poverty at the Weingart Center. African Americans make up about half of the county’s homeless population — disproportionately high compared to the percentage of African Americans in the county overall (about 9 percent). About 33 to 50 percent are female with 20 to 43 percent being families, typically headed by single mothers. Looking like a teenager with her hair in a ponytail and dressed in blue jeans and sneakers, Jackson, whose petite, narrow frame belies her age, says she can only focus on the day-to-day health and well-being of her children. To understand what Jackson goes through on a daily basis, you’d have to walk a mile or more in her shoes — literally. For almost a year, while living in a shelter, she frequently walked up to six hours a day to handle everyday business, which included getting JD to the hospital twice a week, then back to school, Christina to school and Maliya to day care. Then, she’d have to go about her daily business, before reversing the routine to get her children back to the shelter each night. While some would crumble at the seriousness of her reality, Jackson, whose hair at one time fell out due to stress, has proven to be a fighter and survivor. “I count it all joy and keep going,” said Jackson, who has lived with several relatives over the years, some of whom lost their homes. “When I get upset about the situation, I just get moving. The hard part comes when you complain about your circumstance. I just get up and do it. Make it happen.” When asked if she understands President Obama’s health care reform law or the full implications of Schwarzenegger’s proposed budget cuts, Jackson admits she doesn’t. “I’m too busy focusing on my kids’ health,” she said. “I haven’t had the time to get in tune with any of it. I’m very interested in learning about it. When I get a minute, I’ll try to focus.” On May 14, in an effort to close a $19 billion budget deficit, Schwarzenegger released a revised state budget proposal that would eliminate California’s welfare-to-work program, a move that would affect 1.4 million people, most of them children. The budget includes major cuts to health and welfare programs for the poor and needy. Previous benefits that were cut in recent years include dental and vision care for Medi-Cal patients. However, a new federal law requires that vision coverage be restored. If he doesn’t receive $6.9 billion in new federal funds he says the state is owed, Schwarzenegger also proposes ending the Healthy Families program, serving 900,000 low-income children. The program is low-cost insurance for children and teens. It provides health, dental and vision coverage to children who do not have insurance and do not qualify for free Medi-Cal. “As Democrats, our response was we were puzzled,” said Assemblyman Dave Jones (D-Sacramento). “We didn’t think it was very productive of the governor of one of the largest states in the union to be threatening the president and threatening the Congress. However, it is true to say that California gets less than its fair share of federal funding.” To many, including other Democratic leaders, it looks as if programs benefiting the poor received the brunt of the governor’s drastic cuts. Jones, who chairs the health committee, said the Democrats are poised to fight Schwarzenegger’s plans. He would like to see a single-parent universal health care program. To that end, Jones is backing AB 2578, a health insurance rate regulation bill, as well as AB 1383, a hospital provider fee that could

raise $1.8 billion. He also co-authored, alongside Sen. Mark Leno and others, SB 810, a Universal Health Care Act, which guarantees comprehensive health care benefits to every California resident. “I’m passionate about the health care situation in California because I went to law school to represent low-income families and individuals,” Jones said. “I’ve seen first hand how families played by the rules and worked really hard in this state and still couldn’t get ahead. You know they put their kids to bed at night, and if the child gets sick, they don’t know how they’re going to get health care for that child. That’s why I care.” When asked if she was surprised the governor’s proposed budget cuts were topheavy with programs affecting the poor, Kelly Hardy, director of health policy with Children Now, said, “I’m not at all surprised.” “That’s often where the cuts fall,” .she said. “Poor people and children don’t have as much (of) a lobbying presence in Sacramento.” And while the cuts don’t directly affect her organization, Hardy said it does make her advocacy work harder because she has to “play defense against the budget cuts rather than work on proactively making things better for children.” Hardy pointed out that in 2009, there were about 1.5 million uninsured children in California. She added that there are 900,000 children currently eligible for existing public programs but aren’t enrolled. “Children’s health care coverage in the state of California has reached a turning point,” said Robert Phillips, Health & Human Services Director of The California Endowment. “California has more uninsured children than when we started our investment 10 years ago. “Many of the recent gains we’ve made in the last five to six years have eroded. The number of children with employer-sponsored insurance decreased in the last five years from 52 percent to now under 47 percent. Most families are losing employer-based coverage.” Jones said he doesn’t understand why this nation has yet to come up with a way to provide universal health care. “All other Western industrialized nations and some non-Western nations have figured out how to provide health care to their population at a fraction of the cost of what we’re doing,” Jones said. “We have some people without health care at all — and it’s just outrageous!” Today, Jackson awaits word on when her daughter will be scheduled for an operation. In the meantime, she’s learned that a paperwork snafu may find her homeless once again. But Jackson is taking the news in stride. “I can’t worry about it right now,” she said. “It’s one day at a time for me. I have to take care of my kids. I just want them to be healthy. I believe He will work it out.” Darlene Donloe was awarded a fellowship from The David and Lucile Packard Foundation and New America Media to research and report on children’s health issues. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

SPORTS MEMORIAL DAY Continued from page 1 In the weeks after the Civil War ended, it was, some said, “a city of the dead. On a Monday morning that spring, nearly 10,000 former slaves marched onto the grounds of the old Washington Race Course, where wealthy Charleston planters and socialites had gathered in old times. During the final year of the war, the track had been turned into a prison camp. Hundreds of Union soldiers died there. For two weeks in April, former slaves had worked to bury the soldiers. Now they would give them a proper funeral. The procession began at 9 a.m. as 2,800 black school children marched by their graves, softly singing “John Brown’s Body. Soon, their voices would give way to the sermons of preachers, then prayer and — later — picnics. It was May 1, 1865, but they called it Decoration Day. On that day, former Charleston slaves started a tradition that would come to be known as Memorial Day. History Discovered For years, the ceremony was largely forgotten. It had been mentioned in some history books, including Robert Rosen’s “Confederate Charleston, but the story gained national attention when David W. Blight, a professor of American history at Yale, took interest. He discovered a mention of the first Decoration Day in the uncataloged writings of a Union soldier at a Harvard University library. He contacted the Avery Research Center in Charleston, which helped him find the first newspaper account of the event. An article about the “Martyrs of the Race Course had appeared in the Charleston Daily Courier the day after the ceremony. Blight was intrigued and did more research. He published an account of the day in his book, “Race and Reunion. Soon he gave lectures on the event around the country. “What’s interesting to me is how the memory of this got lost, Blight said. “It is, in effect, the first Memorial Day and it was primarily led by former slaves in Charleston. While talking about the Decoration Day event on National Public Radio, Blight caught the attention of Judith Hines, a member of the Charleston Horticultural Society. She was amazed to hear a story about her hometown that she did not know. “I grew up in Charleston and I never learned about the Union prison camp, Hines said. “These former slaves decided the people who died for their emancipation should be honored. Hines eventually wrote a history of Hampton Park — the site of the former Race Course — as part of the society’s “Layers of the Landscape series, and included the story. Since then, she has advocated public recognition of the event. It is a story, she said, that needs to be told. Songs for the Martyrs The cemetery had been built on the grounds of the Race Course by two dozen men, groups that identified themselves as the “Friends of the Martyrs and the “Patriotic Association of Colored Men. On the track’s infield, they built a 10-foot fence and dug 257 graves. Most of the soldiers who died at the Race Course prison had been mal-

nourished or exposed to the elements too long to survive. They had been buried together in shallow graves, without coffins, behind the judge’s stand. The efforts to bury them were coordinated by freed slaves and missionaries and teachers working with the freedmen’s relief associations, primarily a Scot James Redpath. They did all the work in 10 days, and called these dead soldiers “The Martyrs of the Race Course. The exercise on May 1, the Charleston Daily Courier reported, began with the reading of a Psalm. The crowd sang a hymn, then prayed. Everyone in the procession carried a bouquet of flowers. The children strew flowers on the graves as they walked past. After “John Brown’s Body, they sang “The Star Spangled Banner, “America and “Rally Round the Flag. By the end, the graves looked like a massive mound of rose petals. These former slaves were joined by several Union regiments, including the 104th and 35th “colored regiments, as well as the famous 54th Massachusetts. These companies marched around the graves in solemn salute. After the picnic, the crowd drifted away at dusk. They had spent the entire day at the new cemetery. Marking the Past A year later, Waterloo, N.Y., celebrated what has been credited as the first Decoration Day. Soldiers were honored, their graves decorated with flowers, much like what had occurred in Charleston. A tradition began. Within 20 years, the name of this holiday would be changed to Memorial Day. In 1868, Confederate Memorial Day got its start. The two holidays were kept separate, allegedly because Southerners did not want to celebrate a holiday to honor Union soldiers. Blight said the tradition of remembering soldiers and decorating their graves likely began during the war, when women visited battlefields after the fighting had ended. For the rest of the 19th century, Decoration Day and Confederate Memorial Day existed as separate holidays, perhaps a symbol of the country’s lingering divide. The two holidays were combined and designated a federal holiday in the 20th century. By then, the martyrs of the Race Course were gone. Their graves were moved to Beaufort National Cemetery in the 1880s, and remain there today. A few years ago, the city of Charleston and the state approved plans for a historical marker in Hampton Park to honor the first Dedication Day. Blight has said the site is perhaps even worthy of National Park status. Harlan Greene, director of archival and reference services at Avery, said the time is right; Charleston has begun to recognize its AfricanAmerican history. “We’re approaching a tipping point, Greene said. “The irony of the story is that Charleston is the cradle of the Confederacy, but the memorial was for Union soldiers. It shows the richness of Charleston history. So far, no plaque has been set, but Hines continues to push for it. Maybe next May 1, she said. Matt Kemp, Russell Martin, James Looney, et al., have been among the Dodgers’ offensive sparkplugs. As of May 24, the Dodgers were 16-5 for the month — tops in Major League Baseball. Ex-Angel slugger Vladimir Guerrero, now of the Texas Rangers, could be coming home to Anaheim on July 13 for the All-Star Game. On May 19, two black man-

Former Pittsburgh Pirates Manager Lloyd McClendon is the Tigers’ hitting coach. And the beat continues‌ The Williams sisters — Venus and Serena — entered the French Open 1-2 for the first time since 2003. Both won their first-round matches. The Williams sisters have been described by USA Today’s Douglas Robson as “healthy, hungry and legitimate contenders for the title.â€? Tiger Woods will be back in action in several major tournaments. Presently on his schedule are the British Open (July 15 to 18), U.S. Open (June 17 to 20), and AT&T National (July 1 to 4). But first Woods is expected to play in Memorial (June 3 to 6). Counter-programming children of color to believe they are beautiful, capable, powerful and intelligent requires specific emphasis on the cultural capital of people of color. It requires school curricula that actively incorporate the contributions of people of color to every aspect of American social history, literature, science and mathematics. It requires that conscious white parents have conversations with their children about how race does confer social advantage onto whites. And it requires that we continue to tear down the regime of white supremacy that fetishizes little white girls as the national ideal of innocence while disposing of little black girls as ghetto expendables. He famously urged blacks to claim civil rights “by any means necessary” and referred to whites as “devils.” But after breaking with the Nation of Islam in 1964 and making an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, he espoused a more internationalist approach to human rights and began

emphasizing that he didn’t view all whites as racists. He also took the name El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. He was shot to death on Feb. 21, 1965, as he began a speech at Harlem’s Audubon Ballroom, now the Shabazz center. He was 39. The only man ever to admit involvement in the assassination, Thomas Hagan, 69, was paroled last month from a prison work-release program. Two men convicted with him — who he said were not among his four accomplices — were paroled in the 1980s. No one else has ever been charged. Hagan has said the assassins acted out of rage at Malcolm X’s criticism of the Nation of Islam’s then-

leader, Elijah Muhammad. Often branded a demagogue and extremist during his lifetime, Malcolm X was celebrated with a postage stamp a quarter-century after his death. The autobiography and Spike Lee’s 1992 film, “Malcolm X,” helped build his stature as an agent of social change. Ilyasah Shabazz, one of Malcolm X’s daughters, and William Alex Haley, the author’s son, said at the May 19 reading they appreciated Reed’s efforts to preserve the civil rights leader’s legacy.
