Magic Johnson Theatres Closes as Renovation of Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza Gets Underway BY CHICO C. NORWOOD STAFF WRITER

The Magic Johnson Theatres at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, a longtime community fixture to many in South Los Angeles, closed June 14. “I am deeply saddened to learn of AMC’s decision to close the Magic Johnson Theatre at Crenshaw Baldwin Hills Mall,” Johnson said in a statement. “AMC purchased the Magic Johnson Theatres several years ago. This was my first (theater), so a piece of me will definitely close with it. I want to thank the community for their support and loyalty over the years. The (theater) has truly been the heartbeat of that community.” AMC’s lease terminates June 30. The theaters will open up again at the end of 2010, according to Ken Lombard, a partner and president of Capri Urban Investors LLC, owners of the mall. There will be a new operator, and the theaters will have a new name. Lombard estimated a new operator for the theaters will be announced in coming weeks. “We are committed to bringing a first-class theater with all of the bells and whistles you would find in the newest theaters,” Lombard said. The plans are to have wideranging changes, including 3-D screens and stadium seating. The closure and remodeling of the theater is part of the first phase in a $30 million renovation of the mall.

Lee Wesley Gibson, Oldest Pullman Porter Alive, Celebrates 100 Years BY DARLENE DONLOE CONTRIBUTING WRITER

At 100, Lee Wesley Gibson has lived, loved and learned. One of his daughters, Gloria Gibson, 65, and a grandson, Loratious Presley III, 45, both call him a “miracle.” “I watch him, and I’m amazed,” Presley said. “He’s an optimist. He’s the most positive person I’ve ever met. He’s in good health. He’s just a miracle.” He’s been labeled a “miracle”

because the centenarian, with the twinkle in his eye and slightly mischievous grin, is incredibly spry and alert. He has no ailments, doesn’t wear glasses, takes no medication, still drives his own car and even has a girlfriend, Evelyn Dotson, 83. He’s been dating her for six years. He’s a man of few words, but what he does say speaks volumes. “I’ve had a good life,” he said during a recent interview. “I had a good job and I raised my family, which is what I wanted to do.”

A GOOD LIFE — These photos show a matured and young Lee Wesley Gibson, who is now 100 and is the oldest living Pullman Porter, according to the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum in Chicago. Gibson recently celebrated his 100th birthday on May 21.

Born May 21, 1910, in Keatchie, La., Gibson, the oldest living Pullman Porter, according to the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum in Chicago, has been around for every president since William Howard Taft, since Jackie Robinson broke the baseball color barrier, and when man landed on the moon. He lived through the Civil Rights Movement and has lived through the inventions of many things from the traffic light to the iPad. He seems slightly embarrassed about the fanfare he received recently at a Black History Month celebration in Hanford, Calif., celebrating the contributions of the legendary Pullman Porters. “I don’t know if it’s significant,” Gibson said. “They say I am the oldest (porter). I don’t know. I guess it is.” At his recent birthday party, May 21, at The Proud Bird Restaurant in Los Angeles, Gibson, who said he is still “celebrating,” was feted by more than 200 of his family members and friends. He received gifts and plaques from California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, AARP, Los Angeles County See PULLMAN, page 14

NEW ERA — A rendering of a planned food court for the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. The mall’s Magic Johnson Theatres was recently closed, and is part of a larger, $30 million renovation set to be complete in 2011 holiday season.

The renovation is expected to take one-and-a-half years, and will include 42 acres covering outside the shopping center, where Albertsons and Macy’s are (on the north side of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard), to Stocker Street. Plans include a new community room, concierge services, improved landscaping and more. “The mall is a 30-plus-year-old

mall. The work will include everything including flooring … lighting. There is some significant work that we’re anticipating like bringing the food court up to today’s standards,” Lombard said. “There are a number of very extensive refurbishment activities that are going to take place. It will have an entirely new look. It’s a pretty extensive redo.” See RENOVATION, page 7

NEWS IN BRIEF THE SOUTHLAND Witness: Man Shot at Calif. Station Didn’t Resist (AP) — A woman who recorded video of an unarmed black man’s shooting by a former transit officer said June 11 that she didn’t see the man resist or fight with police before the gun was fired. Testifying in Los Angeles Superior Court, Karina Vargas said she watched as officers tried to control a group of young men, including Oscar Grant, on a Bay Area Rapid Transit platform in Oakland on New Year’s Day 2009. Vargas said she stood about 10 to 15 feet away and recorded officer Johannes Mehserle as he tried to handcuff Grant. “To me, it looked like he was cooperating from where I was standing,” Vargas testified. Defense attorney Michael

Rains has said his client struggled to handcuff Grant for 12 seconds before the shooting. When Mehserle was unable to handcuff Grant, he told fellow BART officer Tony Pirone, “I’m going to tase him,” Rains said. Videos recorded by several people aboard the train that chronicle the events leading up to the shooting are being used by attorneys on both sides. During opening arguments June 11, prosecutors said the tapes show Mehserle, who is white, losing his calm amid the chaos, while a defense attorney argued Mehserle made a tragic mistake by pulling out his gun instead of a Taser. Mehserle, 28, is accused of killing Grant, 22, while he was lying on the ground. Mehserle has pleaded not guilty to murder.

Greene is America’s Much- The Good, Bad & Ugly of Oil and Gas Barons Needed Political Rocky BY KAIA NIAMBI SHIVERS

Alvin Greene is America’s much-needed political Rocky, tainted though he may be. The line American school kids hear in class is that one day they can be president. Most school kids long before they stop becoming school kids know it’s just a line; they can’t and won’t be president. Now enter Alvin Greene. Here’s a guy with no job, no degree, no name recognition, no campaign organization, no website, and for all practical purposes, no party (he never attended a Democratic Party function). And to top it off, he’s facing felony obscenity charges. Yet Greene gets 100,000 South Carolina voters to punch his name on the Democratic senatorial ballot. The deep suspicion is that Greene is a GOP cropper; that is, that he’s a bought-and-paid-for plant by the party to make fools of the Democrats and ensure a cakewalk victory for GOP Senate incumbent Jim DeMint. The GOP has been accused in the past of secretly bankrolling plants, shills and croppers. And

given the notorious cartoon antics of South Carolina politics, this can’t be totally discounted. Greene had to plop down $10,400 to get his name on the ballot. That’s a lot for a working stiff to pay out of pocket, let alone for someone unemployed. But while it’s plausible to be suspicious, for a GOP dirty trickster to prop up Greene as a straw man would be too blatant. The GOP would be more likely to put money behind someone with some political involvement and name recognition. Money inevitably leaves a paper trail, and if the trail led back to a GOP clandestine operative, the scandal could blow the party out of the water. If Democratic voters suspected hanky panky with Greene, they could have easily ignored him and voted for his chief rival, Vic Rawl, a judge who served on several state commissions and was a fourterm state legislator. He was the Democratic Party favorite. But voters overwhelmingly picked Greene. Republicans outnumber Democrats three to one in the state, and

no Democratic presidential candidate has won South Carolina since Jimmy Carter in 1976. The chance of DeMint being toppled by a Democrat, especially one such as Rawl, who’s just as much a party fixture — even with the fierce antiincumbent mood — was unlikely. Greene makes even more sense with even a cursory look at the Gallup poll released a week before the June 8 primaries. It found that 60 percent of voters, and nearly 70 percent of self-described independents, said they would rather vote for a candidate who has never before served in Congress. Greene then is the perfect field of dreams for countless numbers of voters. He’s the anti-candidate candidate who got on the ballot with conviction and a vague desire to make change. Then without spending a king’s ransom, without the backing of an armada of companies, unions and other special interests greasing their campaign wheels, and without cutting endless backroom deals, he actually won. Growing Up Alone — A Look at the Dilemma of Black Youth and Young Adults BY KOKAYI KWA JITAHIDI

For nearly 30 years, there has been an uncomfortable and persistent conversation within the black community concerning the condition and behaviors of black youth and young adults. As a people whose expectations for success were increased by the Civil Rights/Black Power Movement, the youth and young adults that came of age in the 1980s through the new millennium were supposed to have it easier and realize the dream of Martin Luther King Jr. However, suffering through the realities of the crack cocaine epidemic and street gang wars that claimed thousands of black lives, many of our people — particularly some elders and the black elite — became disenchanted with their own kids and grandchildren and bought into the mainstream narrative that black youth and young adults, in particular, had largely become a group of disrespectful, violent savages. With every news report of another gang-related murder or music lyrics laced with the Nword, this problematic perception grew in the hearts and minds of many of our own people, which resulted in collective behaviors that further isolated and damaged a vulnerable group of young people beset by the impacts of white supremacy, Reaganomics and police brutality. While there were elders, community leaders and members of the black elite that understood the

changing and complex landscape impacting blacks born in the waning decades of the 20th century, too many still defaulted to simplistic and useless explanations to the rise of gang membership, poverty and political apathy among the youth. Some of their theories centered on the evils of hip-hop music or lack of prayer allowed in schools. As convenient and appealing as these explanations may be, they fail to hold the white power structure accountable or expose the divisive dynamics within our community. Below are two scenarios that became prominent within the last 30 years, which highlight the dilemmas of our young people. Enrolling Black Children in Schools Outside of the Black Community Desperate to keep their children away from the so-called “riffraff” youth found in our community’s public schools and emboldened by the integrationist leanings of the Civil Rights Movement, many black parents — particularly the middle and elite classes — began enrolling their sons and daughters in schools in predominately white areas. While their actions were in many respects understandable, this decision by a critical mass created additional problems for their own children who had to struggle for support, credibility and acceptance within a white-dominated, racist learning environment that did not and could not affirm the self-worth and identity of a black child. Furthermore, since school is

where many lifelong social practices are honed and developed, the scenario described above effectively prevented many black youth from relating to and Kokayi Kwa learning to work Jitahidi with their black peers, who still went to school in the ’hood. Since many of the highest-achieving black students began attending public or private schools in white areas, talented, yet lowperforming black students who suffered from a plethora of familial and socio-economic distractions were isolated to underfunded or neglected schools in the black community. In short, the educational conditions and practices within our community have worked together to create divisions within the younger generations and ineffective leaders who have grown up relatively separated from the masses of black people. While the recent development of charter schools and magnet programs in our community have kept some black youth from heading to Santa Monica or the West Valley for school, these models have still reinforced, in many respects, the self-destructive pattern of dividing the talented blacks from the struggling masses. Lack of Response to the Crack Epidemic by Black Leadership For many in black leadership, the post-civil rights era was supposed See KOKAYI, page 19

Let me tell you a little story about oil drills and political coffers. Oil and gas barons rule the free trade world . . . until the unpredictability of life stops political and economic brutes such as BP in their tracks — well, at least for now. This story is not new, and sadly, but truthfully, President Obama is entangled in an unsavory political relationship that has him squirming between his genuine acts of concern regarding the Gulf oil spill fiasco and the oil and gas industrialists who don’t care. From liberal camps to rightwingers, they are seizing the opportunity to take advantage of Obama’s questionable actions. Now, I am convinced that if Obama does not put on a Superman suit and swim to the bottom of the ocean and plug up the hole himself, none of his critics will be satisfied. Simultaneously, those same folks who broke camp and ran far away from Obama after the spill are not being honest about the multiheaded culpability of this man-made public and private disaster that BP attempted to play down in the initial moments of the rig explosion. Nevertheless, Obama is learning a hard lesson in reneging on pledges that could have changed the face and awareness of clean energy in North America. Before I go into the moral lesson, let’s back up to the promises made by Obama during the presidential campaign. Then, he pushed for green jobs and more environmentally friendly natural resources and extraction processes. Intentions were good until after the election.

Obama understood that the small contributions of the masses were great, but most of his puppet strings were pulled by greedy palms that are Kaia Niambi stained by greasy Shivers petroleum. In the midst of ugly health care battles, Obama did what politicians always do: make ugly trade-offs that spit in the face of some of his supporters. In March of this year, Obama agreed to lift the ban on offshore drilling on the East Coast of the United States and establish gas explorations. Republicans and oil/gas folk, of course, were happy. Companies such as BP began making arrangements to dig in areas they salivated to explore for many years. On the other hand, environmentalists were beyond disappointed, they were utterly pissed off. Obama’s bedfellows became some of the most disturbing monsters and thugs in the free-trade world today. Oil and gas mega corporatists carry a history of shutting down alternative energy resources through a bevy of refined business strategies ranging from manipulating political policy to buying out research companies that threaten the domination of petroleum and methane. Oil companies in general, and BP in particular, have long, notorious reputations for participating in disgusting acts of oppression, exploitation and the de-evolution of countries all over the globe. Audit: L.A. DWP Misled City Council on Finances (AP) — A city audit has found the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power wrongly told city officials it was cash-strapped in the run-up to a rate increase vote. City Controller Wendy Greuel says the utility had no reason for withholding $73.5 million from the city, because it had $752 million in its coffers at the time. Councilwoman Janice Hahn called the DWP’s move a “low blow” to a city already faced with a massive budget deficit. Councilman Bernard Parks called it “extortion.” DWP traditionally gives 8 percent of its surplus revenue from electricity operations to the city, but in March utility officials said they couldn’t make the multi-million dollar payment. The City Council agreed to increase electricity rates by an average of 4.8 percent in April.

How to Keep Your Best Employees on Board BY TALI ARBEL AP BUSINESS WRITER

Money is nice. But attention, recognition and the chance to learn new skills are the key to keeping top performers on board as the job market improves, experts say. More people are quitting their jobs voluntarily than getting laid off now. Human resources experts say employers can take several steps to keep employees from leaving, even when a competitor offers a higher salary. Americans remain nervous about job stability, while the stillrecovering economy means companies are largely not doling out lavish salary increases, said Harry Osle, a principal in consultancy Hackett Group Inc.’s human resources practice. So what’ll do the trick? Go personal and communicate. Employees “will be more hesitant to make a jump if they feel like they’re part of a family, an organization that’s investing in them,” Osle said. • Make sure employees know what company goals are during the recovery from the recession, said Sayed Sadjady, who works on talent management for PricewaterhouseCoopers. New projects, a quest to regain lost market share —

these “bring excitement.” • Mentoring and coaching relationships are also crucial, especially if mentors traveled a similar career path, Sadjady said. Isolated employees can feel they have no prospects with the company. • Employees need to learn new skills. Even if a promotion is not available, challenge high potential workers with projects that will enable them to learn new skills and take on a new role, said Tim Schoonover, the chairman of career consulting firm OI Partners. Otherwise, top performers will leave, he said. • Recognition. “People want to be appreciated. Give them attention,” Schoonover said. • Flexible work schedules are also important, Sadjady said.

BRIEFS Continued from page 1

Budget Cuts Mean Fewer Fingerprints for L.A. Sheriff (AP) — The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is collecting fewer fingerprints because of budget cuts. Sheriff Lee Baca cut overtime expenses in March for 59 fingerprint specialists in an effort to help fill a $128 million budget gap, The Los Angeles Times reported June 13. As a result, more than 65 homicide probes have been held up and potential leads in a number of other crimes have been destroyed. There’s now a backlog of more than 100 prints waiting to be analyzed. Burglary victims have had to stay away from parts of their homes or temporarily close their businesses to avoid smudging prints and destroying evidence, according to the Times.

DA Rejects Assault Charges Against Suge Knight (AP) — Los Angeles prosecutors have declined to file assault charges against Marion “Suge” Knight but are asking police to

investigate further. Police had sought assault with a deadly weapon charges against the former rap mogul after Knight’s May 20 arrest for allegedly pointing a gun at a man. Knight was released hours after his arrest after posting $65,000 bail. The district attorney’s spokeswoman Jane Robison said prosecutors rejected filing the charges June 10. An after-hours message left for Knight’s attorney, Marc Brumer, was not immediately returned. Brumer had denied a confrontation ever happened or that Knight was carrying a gun.

L.A. Votes to Side with Coalition Against Ariz. Law (AP) — Los Angeles leaders have voted to file a friend of the court brief siding with a coalition that wants to overturn Arizona’s new illegal immigration law. The City Council voted 8-2 on June 8 to file documents with the plaintiffs who say Arizona Senate Bill 1070 interferes with federal power and authority over immigration matters. Council President Eric Garcetti proposed the friend of the court brief. Plaintiffs in the case are the Service Employees International Union, United Food and Commercial Workers International, and the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The Arizona law requires police enforcing other laws to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are in the country illegally.

OAKLAND (AP) — Bay Area Rapid Transit police officers are getting their stun guns back after the agency updated its policies and retrained officers on how to use the devices. BART suspended Taser use in April after two court rulings limited use of the device. The suspension also came after a BART officer fired a Taser at a teenage suspect on April 1. The suspect was not hit and no See BRIEFS, page 5

BART spokesman Linton Johnson said officers who choose to use the stun guns will now have to carry them on their weak or nondominant side. THE NATION Guilty Plea Expected in Mass. Black Church Arson BOSTON (AP) — One of the three white men who allegedly torched a predominantly black church in western Massachusetts because they were angry with President Barack Obama’s election has agreed to plead guilty, a person familiar with the investigation says. B e n ja min H a s k el l , 23, of Springfield, had previously pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges. A person informed of the plea change told The Associated Press that Haskell will plead guilty. The person asked not to be named. Haskell was one of three men charged in connection with the fire that destroyed the Macedonia Church of God in Christ in Springfield in the early morning hours of Nov. 5, 2008, just hours after the presidential election. The church was under construction at the time, but almost complete. It had about 300 members, 90 percent of whom were black, according to federal authorities. Thomas Gleason Jr., 22, and Michael Jacques, 25, have pleaded not guilty to charges of violating civil rights, damaging religious property because of race, color or ethnic characteristics, and using fire to commit a felony. According to an FBI affidavit, investigators were led to the suspects by an informant they allegedly told they set the fire. They were arrested in mid-January. When the informant asked Haskell why they did it, Haskell said “because it was a black church,” according to the affidavit. Haskell also allegedly said he thought Obama would be assassinated.

Ex-Neb. Black Panther Files New Federal Appeal OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A former Black Panther convicted nearly four decades ago in the bombing death of an Omaha police officer has filed a new federal appeal. Edward Poindexter, who’s serving a life sentence at the state penitentiary, is seeking either release or a new trial. Attorney Robert Bartle said in the June 8 appeal that Poindexter’s right to a fair trial was violated, his lawyers were ineffective, and prosecutors withheld information about a 911 call. Poindexter and a fellow Black Panther was convicted in Douglas County for the death of officer Larry Minard. Authorities say the pair, in 1970, lured police to a house with a 911 call and then detonated a homemade bomb that killed Minard. A spokesman for the Nebraska Attorney General’s office declined to comment on the appeal.

THE DIASPORA Explosions Kill 5, Wound 75 at Kenya Rally NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Two explosions ripped through a park in Kenya’s capital during a packed political rally June 13, killing five people and wounding 75, officials said.

The rally was held to protest a draft constitution the country will vote on in August. The country’s president and prime minister support it, but several prominent political leaders do not. Prime Minister Raila Odinga said officials don’t yet know the cause of the blasts, but that they wounded 75 people. Dr. Charles

Kabetu of Kenya’s national hospital said five people had died. “I want to say clearly that the government will do everything possible to get to the root of this incident. We must condemn this,” Odinga said. The campaign against the draft constitution opposes a clause that

would allow abortion to save a mother’s life. Opponents also don’t like a clause that would recognize informal courts used by Kenya’s Islamic community. The blast took place in Uhuru Park, a wide expanse of green space in the middle of downtown Nairobi. Hundreds of people attended the rally.

Poll: Money is a Huge Consideration in Pet Care BY SUE MANNING AP WRITER

(AP) — When a vet told Nancy Gates that her dog Arabella had heart problems, needed surgery and it would cost $500, she had no choice but to put her pet down. “It was pretty straightforward because I had four young children to feed. The vet said surgery was my only option. I did not want my dog to suffer,” she said. Gates, 41, of Cotati, about 50 miles north of San Francisco, made that decision 11 years ago but said nothing has changed. She still couldn’t afford high-priced health care for her current pets, an 11-year-old cat, Cocoa, and a 9-year-old golden retriever, Sadie. And Gates isn’t alone. Money is a consideration for the majority of people when dealing with the cost of health care for animals, according to an Associated Press-Petside.com poll conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media. While most pet owners, 62 percent, would likely get vet care if the bill was $500, the percentage drops below half when the cost hits $1,000. The number drops to 35 percent if the cost is $2,000 and to 22 percent if it reaches $5,000. Only at the $500 level are dog owners (74 percent) more likely than cat owners (46 percent) to say they would likely seek treatment. In the

higher price ranges, the two are about equally likely to seek vet care. “Grief gets complicated when we can’t do everything we would have liked to do for our animal,” said veterinarian Jane Shaw, director of the Argus Institute in the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo. That’s especially true in hard economic times, when spending money you don’t have on an animal can have a lasting impact on children, the mortgage, grocery bills, heating bills. “Euthanasia is always sad but when finances have to be considered, when you feel there is a possibility you didn’t or couldn’t do the right thing, you feel guilty,” Shaw said. “We are at a point where we are talking about basic life needs or survival needs.” About one in four people, or 27 percent, said pet insurance is a good way to save money on vet bills, though that’s five times the number who actually carry insurance on their pets. Diego Negrete, 26, of Austin, Texas, has insurance on his 4-yearold fox terrier, Roxy, and his 2-yearold cat, Charley, but he’s in the minority. Ninety-five percent of those polled said they didn’t have insurance.

“It’s a nice cushion to have,” he said of the policy that covers all yearly shots and checkups for about half what they would normally cost. It also pays for part of the costs of different problems, he said, although he didn’t know all the details. But Negrete doesn’t fear vet bills. “I’m not worried at all because the insurance would cover part of it and I am financially capable of covering whatever it costs,” he said.

However, if you are looking upward of $5,000, “something must be seriously wrong,” Negrete said. He would have to look at how much the animal would suffer through the problem, and how the recovery could go. And he would want some assurance the pet would have a good life later. The AP-Petside.com Poll was conducted April 7 to 12, 2010, and involved landline and cell phone

interviews with 1,112 pet owners nationwide. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points. Associated Press Polling Director Trevor Tompson, AP News Survey Specialist Dennis Junius and AP Writer Alan Fram contributed to this report from Washington. first slaves liberated after Lincoln issued his preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Such photos were circulated in the North by abolitionists to garner support for the Union during the Civil War, said Harold Holzer, an author of several books about Lincoln. Holzer works as an administrator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Most of the photos depicted adult slaves who had been beaten or whipped, he said. The photo of the two boys is more subtle, Holzer said, which may be why it wasn’t widely circulated and remained unpublished for so long. “To me, it’s such a moving and astonishing picture,” he said. Ron Soodalter, an author and member of the board of directors at the Abraham Lincoln Institute in

Washington, D.C., said the photo depicts the reality of slavery. “I think this picture shows that the institution of slavery didn’t pick or choose,” said Soodalter, who has written several books on historic and modern slavery. “This was a generic horror. It victimized the old, the young.” For now, Morgan said, he is keeping the photo in his personal collection, but he said he has had an inquiry to sell the photo to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He said he is considering participating in the creation of a video documentary about John. “This kid was abused and mistreated and people forgot about him,” Morgan said. “He doesn’t even exist in history. And to know that there were a million children who were like him. I’ve never seen another photo like that that speaks so much for children.”

Continued from page 1 be a descendant of John. A portrait of slave children is rare, Morgan said. “I buy stuff all the time, but this shocked me,” he said. What makes the picture an even more compelling find is that several art experts said it was created by the photography studio of Mathew Brady, a famous 19th-century photographer known for his portraits of historical figures such as President Abraham Lincoln and Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Stapp said the photo was probably not taken by Brady himself but by Timothy O’Sullivan, one of Brady’s apprentices. O’Sullivan took a multitude of photos depicting the carnage of the Civil War. In 1862, O’Sullivan famously photographed a group of some of the

RENOVATION Continued from page 1 New tenants are also being recruited, including Buffalo Wild Wings and a “signature restaurant” next to the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. “We want to do everything that we can to try to make the mall an attractive place for all types of tenants,” Lombard said. “Part of the first step in being able to persuade them is to get through this refurbishment and start the conversations in a way that they are looking at an A-level mall as a possibility. There are a lot of tenants on our list that fall in the category of taking the existing tenant mix to a higher level.” Lombard estimates the renovation will generate between 1,000 to 2,000 jobs during the construction phase. More jobs should also be generated with the addition of more mall tenants, he added. Because of agreements with the anchor tenants, renovations to the inside of the mall will not get underway until after the holiday season, he said. The $30 million renovation is expected to be completed before the 2011 holiday season. Capri has been working closely with the Community Redevelopment Agency, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and city council offices on the project and has

SHIVERS Continued from page 2 Ironically, the spill is shifting the power brokers of energy. First, the generations of unsafe and unethical practices by oil and gas companies are being exposed. Decades of bullying and exploitation of its workers are being illuminated. And finally, folks are listening and responding. Also, viable small businesses that have sustained local economies such as the fishing industries of the Gulf show that small business is the core of these communities rather than large conglomerates that are prone to strip communities of power by making them dependent on enter-

won support of Villaraigosa and City Councilman Bernard Parks. “The plans to upgrade Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza represent a tremendous investment in the community at a time when it really counts,” Parks said in press release. “I am thrilled that the team is not only making an immediate investment to boost the mall to Class-A status, but also continuing to move forward with their long-term plans to transform the mall into a community center for the Crenshaw District.” Cheryl Tyus, a hair stylist with Hair Architects, a venue in the mall, grew up in the area and remembers when the property was an outdoor shopping center that was home to Newberry’s, Lindberg Nutrition and other businesses. Tyus said her mother opened a clothing boutique in the mall when it first opened. She called the proposed renovations “a wonderful thing.” “I think it’s great. Now we just need to get the people to come in here and do what they need to do,” Tyus said. “Not only are they going to have to renovate the mall, they are going to have to renovate the minds of the community as well. “The people in the community were so used to going outside the community to shop, going west to Fox Hills, going to Nordstrom; it was hard to get them to come into the mall. But I think the renovations are great. We deserve it.”

Additionally, staunch drill supporters before the Gulf oil spill are recanting their “Drill, Baby, Drill” cries while the yells of alternative, green energy sources are gaining momentum. And hopefully, as Obama licks his proverbial wounds during this fiasco, he understands that change is needed, but for change to come about, some excruciating lessons must be learned. ‘Karate Kid’ Opens at No. 1 with $56 Million Kick BY DAVID GERMAIN AP MOVIE WRITER

(AP) — “The Karate Kid” has won a 1980s showdown at the box office against “The A-Team.” Sony’s remake of 1984’s “The Karate Kid” debuted at No. 1 for the weekend with a whopping $56 million, according to studio estimates June 13. The big-screen adaptation of the 1980s TV series “The ATeam” came in at less than half that, the 20th Century Fox release opening in second place with $26 million. With a relatively modest production budget of $40 million, “The Karate Kid” far exceeded the studio’s expectations. Early on, Sony executives would have been happy if the movie opened to half its $56 million debut weekend, said Rory Bruer, the studio’s head of distribution. Those expectations began to rise once the studio realized it had a crowd-pleaser on its hands, Bruer said. “It’s just an unmitigated grand slam hit,” said Bruer, who also worked on distribution for the 1984 version. “I loved the original ‘Karate Kid,’ but they took this beloved title, and they made it relevant, fresh and absolutely exciting.” “The Karate Kid” stars Jaden Smith as an American boy who moves with his mom to China, where he takes on a bully under the guidance of an unassuming martialarts master (Jackie Chan).

THE NEW KARATE KID — Jaden Smith (right) stars in “Karate Kid” with Jackie Chan. The movie debuted at No. 1 in the box office recently, taking in an estimated $56 million.

With his first lead role, 11year-old Smith had an opening weekend that stacked up well against the track record of his superstar father, Will Smith, who has had only two debuts bigger than “The Karate Kid” (“I Am Legend” at $77.2 million and “Hancock” at $62.6 million). Will Smith and wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, are producers of “The Karate Kid.” “It’s like, ‘Who’s the biggest star now, dad?’ ” said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. “It proves the boxoffice apple doesn’t fall far from the money tree in that household.”

1. “The Karate Kid,” $56 million. 2. “The A-Team,” $26 million. 3. “Shrek Forever After,” $15.8 million. 4. “Get Him to the Greek,” $10.1 million. 5. “Killers,” $8.2 million. 6. “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” $6.6 million. 7. “Marmaduke,” $6 million. 8. “Sex and the City 2,” $5.5 million. 9. “Iron Man 2,” $4.6 million. 10. “Splice,” $2.9 million. To “inspire, engage, educate and mobilize” was the mantra of the “A Knock at Midnight” HIV Prevention Summit held June 4 at Holman United Methodist Church. The purpose of the summit was to lay out a community-drafted plan and make recommendations for the next step in fighting HIV and AIDS in the African American community. A poster and media campaign targeting the youth is planned along with a women’s conference that will focus on getting women to advocate around the social and economic barriers to them being safe from not only HIV but also domestic violence and sexual assault. Also, people signed an “I promise to take action” pledge to get involved and engage the community by doing one or more of the following: • Coordinating a health fair featuring HIV/STD screenings at their church, business or other community events. • Distribute HIV prevention materials. • Recruit other community leaders into the HIV prevention and the health justice movement. • Actively participate in

strategic planning to address HIV/AIDS in their community. • Conduct community outreach through education and distribution of health literature. Information: (323) 965-9772.

No Los Angeles County Infants Diagnosed With HIV in 2009 (LACDPH) — A new report from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health finds that no infants were diagnosed with HIV in 2009 and finds that adults with confirmed HIV are living longer before developing AIDS. The report, titled “The 2009 Epidemiologic Profile of HIV and AIDS in Los Angeles County,” tracks the risk factors behind the spread of HIV/AIDS and any changes in those infected with HIV/AIDS in order to help guide efforts of treatment and prevention. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that weakens the body’s immune system and ultimately causes this system to fail. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the lifethreatening stage of HIV disease and is the medical diagnosis for someone whose immune system is so damaged that certain diseases, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis or cancers can develop and become fatal.

Dept. Issues Privacy Breach Fines to Five California Hospitals SACRAMENTO (CDPH) — The California Department of Public Health announced June 10 that five California hospitals have been assessed administrative penalties and fines totaling $675,000 after a determination that the facilities failed to prevent unauthorized access to confidential patient medical information. Among the hospitals fined was Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The hospital was assessed a $95,000 fine after the facility failed to prevent unauthorized access of one patient’s medical information by four employees. Other hospitals fined were in San Bernardino County, Butte County, Yuba County and Kern County. CDPH has assessed the penalties to these facilities under new legislation intended to protect the confidentiality of medical records. CDPH has determined that the hospitals failed to prevent unauthorized access to patient medical information, as required by

CVS Caremark to Cut Off Walgreen from Network NEW YORK (AP) — CVS Caremark Corp. said June 9 it will end rival Walgreen Co.’s participation in its retail pharmacy network starting next month. The move would mean that people whose prescription drug benefits are handled by Caremark would not be able to be reimbursed for prescriptions filled at Walgreen pharmacies. Walgreen recently said it expects most of its 7,500 stores to be out of Caremark’s commercial network in 30 days. Some Walgreen stores won’t be cut off as quickly because of state laws or client contracts. Walgreen, based in Deerfield, Ill., is the largest U.S. drugstore chain based on locations and revenue, slightly ahead of CVS Caremark. Caremark is one of the largest pharmacy benefits management networks. It negotiates contracts with employers and handles the drug benefit part of their health plans, paying pharmacies to fill

prescriptions. It saves money by negotiating volume discounts. Walgreen wants to be paid more for filling prescriptions, while Caremark makes money by reducing costs for plan members and sponsors. The companies had been in negotiations for months, although CVS now says Walgreen refused to negotiate in good faith. Walgreen said June 7 that it wants better prices and objects to policies that drive customers to CVS stores. Walgreen said it would honor any current contracts, however, so customers feel few effects until 2012.

Jackson’s Doctor Fights to Keep Medical License (AP) — A lawyer for Michael Jackson’s doctor filed papers June 11 fighting new efforts by California’s attorney general to suspend his license to practice medicine in the state. The lawyer for Dr. Conrad Murray accused prosecutors of renewing an old motion before a new judge in hopes of winning a different result. Another judge previously declined to suspend Murray’s license but ordered him not to administer anesthetics such as propofol, a drug that was implicated in Jackson’s death. Attorney Ed Chernoff argued that restriction is sufficient. See THE PULSE, page 13

Obama Faces Rare Defeat on Health Help for Jobless BY RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR AP WRITER

WASHINGTON (AP) — If Chuck Lacasse had gotten his pink slip four days earlier, Uncle Sam would have covered most of his family’s health insurance while he looked for a new job. But Congress allowed emergency health care assistance for unemployed workers to expire May 31, and seems unwilling to renew it despite pleas from President Barack Obama. Not three months after lawmakers passed his $1 trillion insurance overhaul, Obama is facing a rare defeat on health care at the hands of his own divided Democrats. Moderates have rebelled against adding billions more to the deficit in a treacherous election year. “The same Congress that spent all this political capital trying to get people health insurance is going to take a crucial benefit away from unemployed people,” said Andrew Stettner, deputy director of the National Employment Law Project, which advocates for the unemployed. On June 4, Lacasse lost his job as advertising director for a company that makes nutritional supplements. He’ll soon have to pay the entire $1,500 monthly premium to keep his family covered under his former employer’s health insurance plan. Until May 31, under Obama’s economic stimulus law, the government provided a 65 percent subsidy. That would have lowered his cost to $525. “This really isn’t about welfare,” said Lacasse, 40. “It’s about buying people some time. In a position as specialized as mine, it would have been nice to know that I had some time to look for the right job.” He lives near Green Bay, Wis., with his wife and two children. Democratic Sens. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Sherrod Brown of Ohio have introduced a measure that would allow the program to continue helping people who get laid off through Nov. 30. That would cover Lacasse. The lawmakers, who are seeking a vote

THE PULSE Continued from page 12 Chernoff said in his filing that a motion filed by Attorney General Jerry Brown’s office is the fourth identical effort filed on behalf of the state medical board. He said it has already been ruled upon and there are no changed circumstances in the case. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor took over the case after Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz set Murray’s bail at $75,000. It was Schwartz who refused to suspend Murray’s license and barred him from administering strong anesthetics.

Pharmacist, Associate Sentenced in Drug Abuse Case (AP) — A pharmacy owner and a pharmacist have been sentenced to prison for illegally distributing $8 million worth of powerful painkillers. The Drug Enforcement Administration announced the sentencing June 4 for Richard Lacson, the owner of pharmacies in Riverside and Los Angeles counties, and his former employee Cesar Cabrera. Authorities said that from 2007 to 2009, Cabrera ordered large quantities of hydrocodone, had the prescription drugs delivered to the pharmacies, then sold them to local street dealers. Cabrera pleaded guilty to distribution of hydrocodone and Lacson pleaded guilty to conspiracy and laundering narcotics proceeds. Both were ordered to serve two years in prison.

this week, want to attach their nearly $7 billion provision to must-pass legislation that would extend unemployment benefits and make changes in dozens of federal programs. But a similar proposal was dropped from the House-passed bill, and Senate Democratic leaders also omitted it from their version. “I’m concerned about it,” said Washington Sen. Patty Murray, a member of the Democratic leadership. “There will be people who fall through the cracks.” Under a 1980s law known as COBRA, laid-off workers generally can stay on their former employer’s health plan for up to 18 months, provided they pay the full premium plus a small administrative charge. But with family premiums averaging about $13,500, the cost is prohibitive for most people. That changed under the 2009 stimulus bill and subsequent expansions, which provided a 65 percent federal subsidy for up to 15 months. Workers laid off through May 31 can qualify for the benefit through their former employer. “It has been a significant program and it has helped many middle-class families to keep their health insurance at a time when maintaining health insurance was difficult because of the high rate of job loss,” said Alan Krueger, the Treasury Department’s chief economist. Official statistics on how many people were helped have yet to be compiled, but Krueger estimated that as many as one-third of eligible unemployed workers enrolled in subsidized coverage. Melanie Miller, 34, who suffers from debilitating neurological problems, said the COBRA program allowed her to maintain her independence after losing her ad agency job. “Without the subsidy, I probably would have had to move back and live in my mother’s house in the basement,” said Miller, an artist who lives in Philadelphia. With the unemployment rate hovering just under 10 percent and with 15 million people looking for work, advocates say it’s premature to withdraw assistance. “We’re recovering, but we haven’t recovered fully,” Casey said. “Now is not the time to pull up the ladder on people who are hanging on, in some cases to the last rung.” Some conservative Democrats, however, say they don’t understand why the government should subsidize workers who lose jobs with employer coverage and not others who are equally deserving — for example self-employed people priced out of the private market. “You’re paying 65 percent of (one) family’s health care costs, but the neighbor next door, there’s no help for,” said Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Calif. “So we’re picking and choosing. There’s an inequality there between our constituents.” Not to mention that Congress has treated the program as emergency spending, adding its cost to the deficit. In Marietta, Ohio, boiler operator Neil Davis is facing the loss of his job as the coalburning power plant he works at prepares to shut down for good. Davis, 33, has marketable skills but he’s unsure how quickly he’ll be able to find comparable work. His wife is a stay-at-home mom raising two elementary-age children. “Being able to have coverage at an affordable rate, we wouldn’t be afraid to take the kids to the doctor if they get sick,” Davis said. “The economy might be getting better some place, but I don’t know where at.” Associated Press writer Andrew Taylor contributed to this report. College Counselor Warns Parents Against Being Controlling College is costly, and mismanaged student loans and expenses can lead to a lifetime of financial problems. Still, parents shouldn’t get too involved in their children’s academic planning, says one author. There’s a difference between guidance and control, cautions Barbara Cooke, a college career counselor and author of the recently published book “Parent’s Guide to College and Careers: How to Help, Not Hover.” “Guidance is helping your child get firsthand information about the opportunities that are out there. Control is doing the research yourself,” Cooke said. “Guidance is saying, ‘I want you to talk to two engineers before you reject an engineering major.’ Control is saying, ‘I won’t pay for college unless you major in engineering.’ ” Cooke offers this advice to parents: • Discuss how much money

your child will be borrowing, a budget for living expenses while in college, and how student loans will be repaid. • Have a clear understanding of your own financial situation before you sign on for student loan debt, and complete your income tax forms as early as possible each year. Financial aid hinges on parental tax information. • Teach your children how to advocate for themselves in dealings with college personnel. Monitor their progress meeting administrative deadlines. • Encourage your child to watch for financial aid deadlines, seek academic support services, and do research before selecting a major. Meanwhile, educate yourself about important dates: the earliest date to enroll, the date fees are due, the last date to withdraw with a full refund, partial refund dates, and so on. • Stress the financial impact of losing a scholarship or financial aid eligibility because of poor grades or dropped classes.

1974. No one talked about it, but we knew.” Whenever he wasn’t working, Gibson said he stayed at home and took care of his wife and children. A remarkably agile centenarian, Gibson, who has three children — Gwendolyn Reed, Barbara Leverette and Gibson (his firstborn, Lee W. Gibson Jr., died in 1958) — six grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild, is a bit reluctant to discuss his life, the secret to his longevity, or to reflect on the things which move and motivate him as a human being. “You know too much already,” said Gibson, who retired from Union Pacific Railroad in 1974 after 38 years as a Pullman Porter and said he never missed a day of work. “There’s no secret. It’s living right, eating right and no doctor’s medicine. The last time I took medicine was seven or nine years ago. I felt worse when I was taking it. So, the last time I had medicine, I put it in the toilet. Now, I just take Vitamin C.” Gibson, whose wife (Beatrice A. Gibson) of 76 years died in 2004, is still an avid Dodgers fan. He watches every game unless it’s during the time he attends the church he’s been going to for 60 years, People’s Independent Church of Christ, where he was once a deacon. Gibson will tell you he’s had a full and happy life, which included moving to Los Angeles in 1935, working at the Darco Corp. as a purifying agent, owning Gibson Cleaners, working at H&R Block, starting his own tax company, working at a bar and becoming a personal tailor at the WJ Glover tailor shop. With all that he’s accomplished in his life, Gibson said nothing has

brought him more joy than one thing: “For me, nothing was more important than being a father,” Gibson said. “I had four children, and I’m crazy about them.” Gloria Gibson is the youngest of Gibson’s children. When she talks about her dad, she actually gushes. “He was wonderful and is still wonderful and very supportive,” she said. “He didn’t cuss, fuss or fight. If I was in anything at school, he would come. When I was a flag girl at Centennial High School, he made our uniforms. There were six of us on the team, and he made all of our uniforms. He would often make her clothes and went with her to pick her wedding dress, she said. He bought her first car. “When I got shot in 1991 by a double barrel shotgun, he was there,” she said. “As a family we always ate together in the kitchen. He was always there unless he was on the road.” Presley said it’s easy to talk about his grandfather. “The best thing about him is that there is this combination of God and being an optimist,” he said. “He’s simply the best. He taught me how to ride a bike. Took me to baseball games. Taught me how to count. His family orientation is God first, family second. Even as a kid I appreciated who he was.” This Sunday, June 20, is Father’s Day. Gibson said he plans to spend it doing what he loves. “I’ve had a marvelous life,” he said. “The best way for me to spend Father’s Day is at church with my children. There is nothing else I need to do. That’s all I need.”

PULLMAN Continued from page 1 Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and President Barack Obama. “I think his wife (Michelle Obama) sent it,” said Gibson. “It was great. I voted for him. I think he’s doing a good job. I never thought I’d see a Negro president. It was never on my mind that there would be one. Never even thought in those terms. When he won, I was so far out. I don’t know what I thought.” A lover of trains since he was a little boy, Gibson said he grew up

near railroad tracks, but never dreamed he would actually have a job working on the train. Being a porter was considered a “good job” for a black man, said Gibson, who worked about 240 hours a month, earning 36 cents an hour when he started. “The passengers would tip,” he recalled. “Most of the money was tips. The railroad put signs up in the cars saying, ‘No Tipping Allowed.’ But people tipped us anyway. “They didn’t tell, and we didn’t either. It wasn’t a lot of money, but it was enough for us to get by.”

His career began with him loading and unloading passengers, securing baggage, and taking care of the passenger cars. One of his trips would take him from Los Angeles to Caliente, Nev. Other trips took him to Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah; Omaha, Neb.; and Chicago. He remembers vividly his last day working as a porter in 1974. “I was working from Oakland to Chicago,” said Gibson, who understands the historical significance of his role as a Pullman Porter, but doesn’t dwell on it. “It was like any other day. We’d fly from here to Oakland and take a train to Chicago and reverse it. That happened every 18 days. Oakland to Chicago took 33 hours. In Chicago we’d stay overnight and take the train back the next day. Then 18 days later I would repeat it. “Sometimes we had to go in town and sleep in a rooming house,” said Gibson, who added he never experienced racism directly. “It was for coloreds only.” Gibson, who encountered celebrities such as Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong and Kate Smith during his travels, remembers getting nothing but respect from both white and black passengers. “They would call us porter,” said Gibson, who added he has no regrets about how he’s lived his life. “I was never disrespected during the time I worked on the trains.” However, Gibson revealed that until he retired in 1974, blacks continued to be assigned separate seats. After he retired things changed — a little. “Black people either got first seats or the last seats in the coaches,” Gibson said. “It was still like that in

HUTCHINSON Continued from page 2 The first and often the only question anyone who wants to run for office is asked is not what are your ideas and program, but how much money can and did you raise? Greene is the candidate who can honestly answer, “not a penny.” The question drives the polluted stream of American politics. The Center for Responsive Politics and Public Citizen, a Washington think tank which tracks election spending, estimates that spending in the 2010 congressional elections will total almost $4 billion. In Connecticut, $21 million was spent. California: $18 million. In Nevada, Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid spent $17 million. California GOP senatorial nominee Carly Fiorina spent nearly $6 million out of her own pocket to bag the party nomination. That’s just for this election. The Center for Public Integrity found that the Republican Senate leader, Mitch McConnell, has spent nearly $50 million over the past quarter century on campaigning. One political financial watchdog

KOKAYI Continued from page 2 to be about moving forward in new and expansive ways. We were inspired by the growth of black mayors and Jesse Jackson’s run for president. We were encouraged by the growth in the number and visibility of the black middle class. On television, “The Cosby Show” and “A Different World” showed that a black oasis within white America was on the brink. In the midst of the celebration, however, conditions were being created in the black community by the white power structure (i.e. Iran Contra Program) and other entities that introduced problems not yet seen. By the mid-1980s, a new form of drug called “crack” came onto the scene. While there had been drug epidemics before in our community, this was different in so many ways. Given the white power structure’s elimination of many domestic living-wage jobs and cuts in public services to the poor, crack became arguably the primary economic engine in many parts of the black community for more than a decade. It may be embarrassing to admit, but while many black people lost their lives to this drug, many also paid their rent, bought groceries or started businesses because of the crack game. This created a scenario where local drug dealers and gang leaders became the heroes of a large number of youth and young adults who were not being touched by more positive examples of black leadership. Furthermore, the aggressive behavior associated with crack addiction and the growth of street gang combat over the control and distribution of dope created heightened levels of murders, assaults and robberies. By the end of the 20th century, some black neighborhoods had lost thousands of lives to drug-related murders and addictions. Sadly, however, since the crack epidemic and gang violence were seen as “poor-black-people” problems, group flatly branded this obscene spending as legalized corruption. The mind-boggling runaway cost of elections has turned American politics into a rich person’s sport, demolished any semblance of a political level playing field, and mocks the notion that voters have a Democratic choice. The Supreme Court’s decision to rip away virtually all checks on corporate and labor-union spending and its fresh assault on public financing (the Arizona decision) will make political campaigning even more the playground of the super-rich. Greene didn’t simply beat these odds; he rewrote them. He is one antidote for those fed up with the stench of money and deal making in politics. Voters should take careful note of what Greene did in South Carolina. With a felony rap hanging over him, with no name, no money, and seemingly not a prayer of a chance to win, he triumphed. That’s what a Rocky can do, tainted though he may be.

many civil rights organizations — with their middle-class orientation — were inadequately prepared to respond. Churches witnessed the devastation among their members but couldn’t successfully solve the issue through their traditional means of prayer and preaching. In the meantime, the numbers of children in foster care skyrocketed and incarceration rates rose to record highs — thus creating an overwhelming sense of loss, grief and anger within many black youth and young adults that still haven’t gone away. The two preceding examples highlight the complexities of conditions impacting black youth and young adults. In the course of trying to fight back the impact of white supremacy, members of our own community made decisions, at times, that actually made the situation worse — particularly for our young people. Thankfully, we have the capacity to change mistakes made in the past. The issues of poor education, drug addiction and gang violence remain, and we have the opportunity to address these problems in more creative and dynamic ways. However, to do so we must do at least four things: 1. Embrace every black child as a member of our family through word and deed. 2. Teach black children about our fight for freedom and justice. 3. Challenge and eliminate any thoughts that reinforce division within our community (i.e. income, geography). 4. Get out into our community and organize. L.A. WATTS TIMES

Black Music Month Retrospective ALL THAT JAZZ — It’s one thing to listen to music, but for photographer Maxie Floyd, “it’s another thing to have a lasting image” of it. And for decades, Floyd has helped do just that: preserve the history of jazz and other music through photography. A self-described jazz historian, Floyd has been taking photos for nearly 60 years, many of which were spent shooting some of the biggest names in jazz, including Dizzy Gillespie, Nancy Wilson, Miles Davis and many more. In light of Black Music Month, the L.A. Watts Times is sharing photos of jazz greats, courtesy of Floyd, who says it is “really important to celebrate Black Music Month.” Jazz musicians from the ’40s and ’50s are dying, and “the photographs help carry on this history,” he says. Black music is part of African American history, going back to the days when slaves brought rhythms from Africa to the United States, when they could only sing in the fields and church, he adds. “It’s the only original American art form,” Floyd says. “And it’s an art form now that’s celebrated worldwide.” Pictured (clockwise): Miles Davis listens to musician Buddy Guy at the Monterey Jazz Festival in the early ’60s; Dizzy Gillespie, who Floyd says probably influenced most of the modern-day jazz musicians, plays the trumpet at the Monterey Jazz Fest; Ray Brown plays the bass — he’s the bass player all other jazz bass players look up to, says Floyd; pianist Oscar Peterson, who played in the Oscar Peterson Trio, on the piano; (left to right) jazz legends Gerry Mulligan, Dexter Gordon and Stan Getz, all saxophonists, and trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Gillespie at the Playboy Jazz Festival in Los Angeles (only two were held before this event); (left to right) noted bassist John Levy, who became the first black jazz manager, the legendary Heath brothers, Jimmy and Percy, veteran singer Nancy Wilson, Tootie Heath and his wife, Beverly Heath.
