athletics We take pride in designing spaces that bring community members together and promote healthy lifestyles. Our facilities allow families, teams, bands, and organizations to congregate over a shared interest. Our design approach is comprehensive and focuses on the big picture. We work closely with all stakeholders on a project to make sure the facility meets the needs of users. We work with your team to establish patterns of usage so that our design allows for the most effective use of the space. Whether it’s indoor or outdoor, we’ve got your athletic needs covered. Our team has over 15 years of experience in all areas of athletics and community spaces.

outdoor facilities Outdoor athletic facilities host more than just athletes. Bands, families, special organizations and the like will all use these facilities for a variety of community activities over time. Our team can take any project from concept to completion. No matter the scale of your program, whether it’s one field or an entire complex, we will make sure you have top-notch facilities. We look at your project comprehensively, taking into account safety, maintenance, costs, and regulations to optimize the game for athletes, fans, and staff alike.

Fields, tracks, and courts are the most common outdoor facilities that we design. We work within the available site to make the most out of your space. Sometimes, that will call for multipurpose fields, which allow many sports to be played on a single field. With the right design, multipurpose fields will take up less space, allow for multiple sports to play, and cost less than having many traditional separate fields. Our team has designed fields that can fit many or all of these sports into one central location.

There are many options for field surfaces. Whether it’s a synthetic turf field or a sand-based natural grass field, we have the expertise to help you determine the optimal surfacing for your facility.

We use spatial planning to layout the variety and number of field events with consideration for maintenance, participants, and spectators. In addition, our team can assist with phasing to make sure you always have a place to play during construction.

The longevity of your facilities matters. Taking in to account rest periods, scheduling, maintenance, and critical input from staff, we will design your field for optimal efficiency. Your entire program is important. We see the whole picture: parking, lighting, accessibility, spectator seating, drainage, track crossings, gates into the field, water availability, scoreboards, convenience outlets for timing and scoreboard controls, and distance between parking, play, and seating. These are all small yet important parts of a project, and we make sure that they work for you. We can customize your experience so your facilities will be useful for years to come.

Our projects often include tennis, pickleball, and outdoor basketball courts. Practice walls are a common addition for court sports, and we can permanently fix them to the site, or integrate them into the site’s topography.

indoor facilities

We have designed facilities for various YMCAs, municipalities, K-12 districts, and colleges.

Our indoor facilities portfolio includes pools, weight rooms, locker rooms, indoor track & field, spectator seating, indoor turf fields, athletic training rooms and program space, and volleyball, tennis, and basketball courts. While designing these facilities, we strive to promote an understanding of the cultural history, campus context, and future development goals that identify with your mission.

LaBella’s team specializes in the design of energy efficient, high performance athletic facilities.

Inclusiveness It’s important to us that everyone can participate. At LaBella, ADA standards are considered a minumum set of standards. We have integrated our designs with specialized programs such as the Special Olympics and utilize a universal design approach for accessibility. Recently, we designed a collegiate training center that will host events for the Special Olympics.

Ancillary facilities Whether indoor or outdoor, athletic facilities do not function alone. There are several additional features that make your complex functional for athletes, fans, and staff. These ancillary facilities can include storage buildings, ticket booths, plazas, bleachers, grandstands, concessions, restrooms, and press boxes. At LaBella, our full service capabilities allow us to provide all of these facilities for your project. There are many amenities available and we stay up to date with the costs, designs, and functions of all of them.

LaBella Associates was presented with the Harley Hill Excellence in Lighting Award, Exterior Category, by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) of Rochester for the sports lighting design at Thornell Farm Park in the Town of Pittsford, New York.

In just one year, we designed over 90,000 cubic feet of stormwater treatment practices for athletic facilities - that’s enough to fill an Olympic size swimming pool!
