A solicitor with almost 20 years’ experience in the area of litigation, Mia is the partner of one of the Gold Coast largest corporate and family law firms and is a highly regarded litigation lawyer within the legal sector and among her peers. A third generation Gold Coaster, Mia is no stranger to the Law, following in the footsteps of both her mother and father who were also well-known Gold Coast legal practitioners. Her ties to the law are ingrained and Mia is married to Ron Behlau, who is a respected Gold Coast Criminal Lawyer. Mia provides her clients, typically small to medium sized businesses, company directors or liquidators in the areas of corporate or commercial disputes, debt recovery or insolvency issues, focussing her expertise on realistic and commercial outcomes. Throughout her career, Mia has practised exclusively in the area of Commercial Litigation, Construction and Insolvency. She has worked in boutique litigation firms in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast. More recently, she led the Dispute Resolution team in a top tier International law firm. “My approach to the law is different from many litigators because I am focussed on resolving disputes commercially instead of running every matter towards a judge. Many lawyers get caught up in the ‘fight and lose sight of the reason why their client came to see them in the first place - to sort out their problem. “Problems aren’t sorted out in a court room, they’re sorted by application of common sense and a big picture approach.” Mia attended Bond University Law School on the Gold Coast and now raises her three children with the same ethics and commitment to the community. Mia has built strong relationships within the legal sector and her community where she sits on several boards and community groups. She is passionate about giving back to the community. For many years, Mia was the Vice President of the Women of Influence Group and now sits on advisory committees with the Queensland Law Society. She is the President of the Gold Coast District Law Association and holds a position as director on the Boards of Gold Coast Basketball and St Hilda’s Foundation. “Balancing work and home life is all about good time management,” she says. “It is also very important to be present and focussed whether at home or work. I typically work hard while I am at work and tend to focus only on my family when at home. This said, I am always available for my clients no matter what hour of the day.”
