Compliance with Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) for GHS OSHA has revised its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to align it with GHS in order to improve the quality and consistency of hazard information, and to make it safer for workers to do their jobs and easier for employers to stay competitive. The update will provide a common and coherent approach to classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information on labels and safety data sheets affecting 43 million workers.

Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Requirements The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) requires chemical manufacturers, distributors or importers to provide safety data sheets (SDS) to communicate the hazards of hazardous chemical products. Employers must ensure that the SDS are readily accessible to employees. New SDS must be in a uniform format and include section numbers, headings and associated information under the headings.
Labeling Requirements Employers have flexibility regarding the type of system to be used in their workplaces. Employers may choose to label workplace containers either with the same label that would be on shipped containers for the chemical under the revised rule or with label alternatives that meet the requirements for the standard.
