PART VI. DESIGN
CHAPTER 1. MASTERPLAN DESIGN
Design Stratage 1 —— Adding a part of space to improve the Building
Design Stratage 1 The main idea of the "Design Stratage1" is to add space all around the existing building to not only solve the problem of the long and monotonous corridors but also to improve the living quality of the whole complex. First of all, demolishing the outdoor staircases and adding new ones with lefts, merging into the additional space. Secondly, adding Service function like Launday, Resturant and so on on each floor along the existing corridors. Last but the most important, the main part of the additional space will become Pravite Terrace on the floors which have no corridor. While on the floors with corridors, the additional space will become corridors, instead the formal corridors will be transformed into the Entrance Terrace for the apartment around

Design Stratage 2 The main idea of the "Design Stratage 2" is to creat space at both part of the building for pedestrian from the city for passing through courtyard of the building, which can bring the whole complex more city functions. First of all, not only the people living in the building, but also people from the city can enter the courtyard or walk through it. Secondly, the courtyard can be transformed into a city garden. Thirdly, the entrance of the building can be organized around the courtyard, which can lead people in the building use more frequently the courtyard.

Design Stratage 3 —— Adding Community Function in the Courtyard
Design Stratage 3
Organizing the Ground Floor
Sections
The main idea of the "Design Stratage 3" is to add community function like relexing and entertainment space for the youth or the care center for the elderly, even kindergarden for the children for the family living around. First of all, creating a platform like space which contains more public funcation. While at the same time lefting up the volume with courtyard, to avoid not covering so much the ground floor. Secondly, making the link bridges or platform from the main building to the community funcation volume for better service the people living in the complex Covering the ramp for the car

Specific Design 1 —— Transform the Vertical Transportation Space
Location Map
Space can not be used in the Vertical Transportation Space Make the lefts reach every floor of the building
The left can not reach the 3rd and 5th floor
Using the useless space, and create corridor on all the floors The out door staircase can not reach the 3rd and 5th floor as well, and the size is very big
Rebuild the out door space, Reduce its size and merge it into the additional space of the building
The out door staircase and the indoor space for staircase/left are separated on the ground floor Staircase Left Corridor Space can not use
Staircase Left Corridor
Specific Design 2 —— Transform the Apartments next to the Vertical Transportation Space Location Map
All the roof space are closed, however part of it can be better used
Open the roof for creating more using sapce
Big technology space separtes the interior space of the apartments
Break part of the technology space for better interior space
The opening window of the inner facade is very limited
Create more opening windows on the inner facade Add more space on the orginal facade to creat open terrace or corridors
Ground floor is a waste space, which is blocked by iron fence
Free the ground floor for the public space Technology Space Windows (Opening) Space not Well Used Iron Fence

Surface Solution 4 (Interface)
More Open Interface
Better Acoustic and Insulation Materials
Using the transparent material like glass as the interface around the more public living space for the elderly, which can weaken the architectural boundary.
Inserting better acoustic and insulation material for all the walls and partitions, in order to create better physical environment for the elderly.
Strategy

Using more transparent material
Using better acoustic and insulation material
Surface Solution 5 (Certain Space)
Partition Solution 1
Warm/Transparent Interface for Certain Space
Central Toilet
The bedroom and the “inner terrace are the spaces elderly will spend most of their times so it is important to use material like wood and partly glass. Because wood is good for relaxing and manufacturing quiet atmosphere, while the transparent interface can make space so closed.
Toilet, as the main servant space is put in between the living space and the bedroom, which is more efficient and distinguishable for the elderly.
Strategy

Sliding Doors / Walls
Designing a piece of “furniture wall in the middle of the whole dwelling, which contains shared kitchen, the washbasin, the wardrobe and other storage furniture for the elderly. While it also act as a boundary of the living space for the elderly.
Using sliding doors as the separation of different functional spaces for elderly, and even introducing sliding walls and screen wall to create more flexible space.

Thresholds Solution 2
Accessibility Solution 1
Avoid Height Different between Materials
Passing-through Toilet
Different parts of the spaces have different material of pavement, which may bring some height difference. Avoiding the difference by using small slope can be help for the elderly.
Entrances from both public space and bedroom is good to fit the frenquence urinates of elderly, and the passing-through toilet can help to create better space.

Accessibility Solution 2
Lighting Solution 1
Space of Rotary
Adequate Lightings in Most Space
Leaving the space of rotary in the each of the funcational space like living room, toilet and the bedroom which can give elderly people a buffer for their activity.
For the most of elderly living space, the lighting should be adequate lightings, which can eliminate shadeowy areas with no disturbing flashes and reflections.

Furnitures Solution 1
Spotlight in Certain Space
Handrails allover Space
In some certain space like bedroom, spotlight is designed to be the light source. Also it is good to have different kind of lights in space like terrace.
Designing handrails in all the activity space for the elderly. It can help them to solve the problems related to the progressive difficlulties in daily life, such as the difficulties of movement with the consequent need for handrails and supports to increase the grip and the stability, getting up and sitting down.
