Cllr Henry Upton

Fitness & Sport news

Slí na Sláinte shows off Crumlin hidden treasures I want to thank Dublin City Council Officials and the Irish Heart Foundation for agreeing to my request to establish a Slí na Sláinte for the Crumlin area. The Slí na Sláinte, meaning “path to health”, will be launched over the summer months and will be marked by bright colourful signposts at 1km intervals. As you can see from the map, the walk starts at the Dublin City Council Area Office in Crumlin Village and proceeds towards St Mary’s Road taking a 3.0 Km loop around the village. You can also do shorter loops, around the block containing St. Agnes’s Church (1.8 Km) or around the block containing Stannaway Park (2.1 Km). Crumlin is full of historical buildings and sites, some dating back to Norman times. On the walk look out for Saint Mary’s Church with Norman Tower, a protected structure and site of archaeological importance. Also of interest are Glebe House (1791) and Looceville House (1796) with adjoining shop. Both houses have a date plaque erected by the Crumlin Historical Society. Other protected structures include Melville

House (19th century) and Crumlin National School(1914) now the well known Youth Club, Brú Crumlin. The 2.1 Km route goes around Stannaway Park which is a hidden treasure in Crumlin. It is a beautifully maintained park that is under-used. Since I was elected to Dublin City Council, I have continually asked Council officials to install seats in this park so that people from the area can rest while they enjoy this beautiful amenity. The reason I am refused is because seats will attract antisocial behaviour. Let me know if you have any ideas on how to tackle this problem.
