DRUMCONDRA & GLASNEVIN Constituency Boundary Changes Dear Resident, I am writing to introduce myself and to inform you of how the recent report of the Constituency Commission affects your area. The Constituency Commission has recommended that four electoral districts in the Drumcondra/Glasnevin area be transferred to the Dublin North West Constituency from the next general election. The area shaded in orange in the map to the right shows the areas transferring from the current Dublin Central Constituency to the three seat Dublin North West Constituency. This area is to the north of the Finglas Road and Withworth Road and to the West of Drumcondra Road Lower. As a Dáil Deputy for the Constituency of Dublin North West, I intend to work closely with your Labour representatives Joe Costello TD and Councillor Aine Clancy on issues affecting your area. I am also available to speak with you on any issues of concern and I can be contacted at 01 618 3280 or john.lyons@oir.ie Thank you for your time and I look forward to speaking with you in the future. With best wishes, “John Lyons is a hard working and principled politician and I will be working closely with him to represent the communities of Drumcondra and Glasnevin.” Minister Joe Costello TD

JOHN LYONS TD - AN INTRODUCTION I was born and raised in Ballymun and my educational background involves studying in NUI Maynooth and Trinity College Dublin. Prior to the 2011 General Election I worked for over 11 years as a teacher in St. Vincent’s Secondary School on the Finglas Road and was acting Vice Principal before the election. During this time I was also very active in a number of community organisations including the Na Fianna Summer Camps for over seven years. I entered politics as a City Councillor in 2008 to address issues of social justice, educational disadvantage and a desire to put right the economic challenges we face. In the 2011 general election, I was elected to the Dáil to represent the people of Dublin North West which currently encompasses Finglas, Glasnevin, Santry, Ballymun, Charlestown, and Beaumount.

JOHN LYONS WORKING ON YOUTH AND LONG TERM UNEMPLOYMENT I know how important every job in the county is and to rebuild our economy we need to create more jobs and opportunities in Ireland. I believe that the best thing you can do to help someone in life is to give them a job. This is why since being elected, I have been putting forward ideas to the Government on how to create more jobs and how to prepare people for work. So far I have: ■ ■ ■ ■

Worked to introduce a ‘Youth Guarantee’ to give every unemployed person under 25 a training or education place Published a ‘Social Clause’ Bill for all public tenders and procurements so local communities and businesses benefit from public projects Worked on policies to develop better education and training options for the unemployed Called for Investment in jobs from building new schools and other infrastructure

With our new €2.25 billion stimulus package and other policies, progress is being made on these ideas but more can be done. This is why as Vice Chair of the Jobs Committee, I organised for the Dáil Committee on Jobs to hold meetings with unions, community groups and some of the country’s largest employers to get ideas on what should be done to create more jobs. A report is soon to issue with recommendations to Government and I will want to see action on foot of the report. I would also welcome any ideas you have on how to get people back into jobs, to help build on our recovery. If you would like to speak with me about this work or any other issue, please feel free to get in touch on 618 3280 or john.lyons@oir.ie

THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION I am honoured to have been elected by my Labour Party colleagues to participate in the Constitutional Convention. This Convention provides us with an excellent opportunity to discuss the social changes that are taking place in our society and how we respond to them. I intend to engage positively on the issues for consideration such as our current electoral system, same-sex marriage and the removal of blasphemy from the constitution, amongst others. I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you on any of the topics for consideration at the Constitutional Convention or by contacting me at 618 3280 or john.lyons@oir.ie. DEAL ON TOXIC BANK DEBT CLOSE In June last year, the Government secured a breakthrough in getting a European agreement, in principle, to break the link between bank debt and national debt. This was a big shift in our favour. Discussions have been underway since then to work out our banking problems which are holding us back. I know the strength of public feeling on this issue and as a Labour Party Deputy I am keen to support the Government’s work to secure a deal on our bank debt. Remember, it was Labour, alone, which stood against placing the private debt of the banks onto the country in the first place. And it was Labour which first committed itself to renegotiating that debt burden. When others said it couldn't be done, Labour disagreed. And, in Government, through sheer grit, and a determination to put - and keep - Ireland's interests on the table, we have been proven right. We have some road left to travel on that deal, and to close the hole in our public finances, but there is no doubt that, this deal was a breakthrough. We are using our Presidency of the European Union to fight for a deal on this bank debt which could help us to say goodbye to the Troika for good.
