COMMITMENT TO KNOCKNACARRA SCHOOL PLACES Significant increased demand for school places in Knocknacarra is forecast for the coming years. To cater for this demand, a new primary school facility will be built in Knocknacarra. Work on the new facility is scheduled to begin in September 2013 and the location currently earmarked for the project is adjacent to the new permanent site for Coláiste na Coiribe in Knocknacarra. The school will facilitate the growing number of pupils in the area and prevent a crisis in school places similar to that seen in Dublin some years ago.

GAELSCOIL MHIC AMHLAIGH I have been working with management and parents at Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh in the campaign to secure a new extension for the school. I arranged a meeting between the schools principal and chairman with Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn to discuss the issue. The meeting allowed the school to put forward the views of the pupils and parents directly to the Minister. I have had several meetings with the Minister and his advisors regarding the scheme. On my side, I impressed on the Minister the huge effort the school had put into fundraising, the real success of the Naíonra project and the fact that the plan was shovel ready and is able to go to tender at a moment’s notice. I will continue to work with the school on this important issue.

COMMUNITY CENTRE DEVELOPMENT CONTINUES The continued progress on the state of the art community centre at Cappagh Park is a great source of positive news for the area. The new building will accommodate local sports organisations but also incorporate space for performance and musical arts. The building itself include passive ventilation and energy efficient systems including solar panels. Purcell Construction commenced work on the project on May 8 and the centre is expected to be completed by May 2013, which is very welcome news.

LOCAL NEWS

THONABRUCKY RESERVOIR

■ Policing of the Knockncarra area is high on my agenda. Speeding and more community policing have been raised at Joint Policing Council Meetings by Cllr Niall McNelis and also with the local Superintendent.

This service is essential to provide a high quality water supply for the west of the city, including Knocknacarra, Rahoon and Westside. This region has experienced considerable population growth and this funding will permit construction to commence without delay.

■ I and my Labour councillor colleague Cllr Niall McNelis have been trying to get derelict building sites improved visually and to make them access safe from children. We are working to bring this up with the Galway City Council and relevant developers.

Galway County Council will soon proceed with the Tonabrucky reservoir project, following the provision of €800,000 in funding.

WIDENING OF THE BALLYMONEEN ROAD The long-awaited widening of the Ballymoneen Road recently took a step forward with the news that major progress has been made by Galway City Council with the land purchase for the project. The works will see the Ballymoneen Road widened north of the roundabout and south of the Slí Gheal estate, making it safer for both road users and pedestrians. The Labour Party had campaigned to have this dangerous stretch of road widened and the necessary footpaths and public lighting installed. Negotiations have been taking place for some time in relation to purchasing a necessary piece of land to accommodate the widening of the road although the process was delayed. The funding for the works was included in Galway City Council’s annual budget for 2012 and the Council is waiting for the transfer of the land to fully complete before they undertake the works.

■ Labour is working to get more road works included in next year’s city budget for Upper Clybaun Road junction that leads on to Rahoon Road. We are seeking new footpaths and street lights for such targeted areas. ■ Bottle bank and recycling facility on Western Distributor Road have been a major success story and now have the highest level of usage in the country. The introduction of CCTV has also reduced dumping enormously, with a large number of fines issued for those that continue to dump.
