KNOCKNACARRA’S LOCAL TD

DEREK NOLAN TD Working with Cllr. Niall McNelis EMBARGO LIFTED FOR KNOCKNACARRA COMMUNITY CENTRE The public service recruitment cap was lifted for Knocknacarra Community Centre after a meeting between myself, Cllr. Niall McNelis, Minister Alan Kelly and the City Manager. The embargo lifting allows the City Council to hire local staff. This is a fantastic community facility so I am delighted it can be resourced properly and that it has a community led management structure.

€450,000 FOR CAPPAGH PARK AND KNOCKNACARRA FC A total of €450,000 in funding has been granted for the development of all-weather pitches, lighting and cages for Knocknacarra FC and wider community use. This money needs to be drawn down so that the project can start in 2016. It will be a top class amenity for everyone in the local community, and I hope the teams have lots of success on it!

ROAD IMPROVEMENTS IN THE AREA Cllr Niall McNeils and I are working on reducing speed on the Clybaun Road by looking for a 30km speed limit. We have also made representations for funding from the NTA to have pedestrian crossing along the Western Distributor Road. In the meantime we have requested that works start to make this road safe for pedestrians.

JUNCTION AT TAYLORS HILL A ban on right turns is in place at the Kingston Road junction when coming from Taylors Hill. This is on a 3month trial basis and is to help ease traffic on the way to Knocknacarra. Results of the trial will determine whether it continues.

NEW HOUSING FOR FAMILIES 14 new housing units that will provide homes for families have gotten the green light in Knocknacarra. I am confident of funding for a further 55 units for the Ballymoneen Road site. Galway City Council is working with the voluntary sector in providing new homes and we have highlighted where improvements in existing stock needs to be repaired.

TWO NEW PRIMARY SCHOOLS Educate Together and the Steiner School have both opened successfully and been allocated funding for school buildings as part of a large school buildings announcement recently. These new facilities will offer a better learning environment for the children.

GAELSCOIL MHIC AMHLAIGH The new school for Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh is making good progress. The new building will be brand new and cater for 50% more pupils. It will act as a feeder school for Coláiste na Coiribe. The Council re-zoned land to allow for the development and planning matters are almost finalised.

COLÁISTE NA COIRIBE OPENS ITS DOORS Great to see the new school open its doors to the students for the first time recently! I wish the students, teachers all the best in their new school building.

The free GP care for children under 6 is now going to be rolled out to all children under 12. This will ease some of the financial pressure of GP visits for parents in Galway and is a very welcome measure.
