Keeping in Touch WORKING FOR THE ARTANE BEAUMONT AREA Aodhán Ó Ríordáin TD Summer 2013

NANIKEN RIVER FLOOD FORUM Your local Labour team has been working hard over recent months to find a long term solution to the flooding problems caused by the Naniken River in Ardmore-Montrose and Maryfield Crescent. There have been discussions with Dublin City Council and the Office of Public Works over the last few months which are now intensifying. After a public consultation meeting with residents on the 7th of May, a sample representative group has been formed who are determined to work with us to find an amenable solution to this on-going problem. The City Council have also committed to establish their own ‘Flood Forum’ for the Naniken area which we will engage with but we are determined to ensure that the OPW and Dublin City Council live up to their responsibilities to the residents. The latest development since that meeting has been the tabling of a motion by Cllr Paddy Bourke at the special May meeting of Dublin City Council demanding that the City Council undertake a hydraulic analysis of the Naniken River. The motion was passed unanimously: MOTION 70. COUNCILLOR PADDY BOURKE That the City Council provides a sum of €50,000 in the 2012 Estimates to commission a Hydraulic Survey of the Naniken River, to determine what works are needed to prevent flooding in the catchment area. A number of houses have been refused insurance cover as a result of this river flooding.

ARTANE - BEAUMONT FC SITE

BEAUMONT HOSPITAL FORUM

The derelict tennis courts in Rockfield Park have been an eye-sore for many years. I am now working closely with local residents, Artane-Beaumont FC and Dublin City Council with a view to developing that site into a community facility that would be of sustainable benefit to the local area.

A number of controversial developments relating to Beaumont Hospital have caused concern for neighbouring residents:

BEAUMONT WOODS PLANNING APPLICATION

The disgraceful construction of an elevated roadway to the rear of Ardmore Drive

The proposed ring-road affecting Beaumont Woods

As residents of Beaumont Woods will be aware, Cllr Andrew Montague, Cllr Paddy Bourke and myself were very active in tackling a recent application to realign a ring road which would have adversely affected the Beaumont Woods estate.

The on-going parking problems associated with the hospital for residents in Kilmore West

After a number of public meetings were organised, I and my colleagues lodged objections and I was glad to see the City Council request more information from the Developer before making a decision. The developer has until mid-October to respond to the Council’s request and after that, the City Council has one month to make a decision. I will be monitoring the situation closely and I hope the hospital will withdraw its plans and listen to the concerns of the residents.

I believe it is time that the hospital starts to work with residents instead of against them, which is why I am working to establish a ‘Beaumont Hospital Forum’ where residents, Gardaí, Dublin City Council public representatives and senior hospital officials could meet on a regular basis to work on matters of local concern. I believe that this would help avoid confusion and difficulties which have developed from the hospital’s poor communication strategy as of late. If you have an interest in being part of such a forum, please do not hesitate to contact my office. I hope to start this process in September.

Artane-Beaumont FC provides a fantastic service to the local community and we have begun a process with Dublin City Council to investigate ways in which the existing facility could be upgraded.

‘CONVENTION IN YOUR CLASSROOM’ PROJECT IN LOCAL SCHOOLS I was delighted to bring my ‘Convention in Your Classroom’ project to local secondary schools over the last number of months. Based on the Constitutional Convention which is discussing possible amendments to the Constitution, my project gave transition year students the chance to air their views, and to visit the Dáil to discuss the issues with politicians from all political parties. Twelve Northside secondary schools took part in the project and the young people in all schools were very impressive.

SANTRY KILMORE WHITEHALL EDUCATE TOGETHER SCHOOL

MARINO TEACHER ACCESS PROGRAMME I have developed a programme with Northside Partnership and Marino Institute of Education to proactively encourage students from Northside disadvantaged schools into the primary teaching profession. Over 20 students from 9 DEIS secondary schools been taking part in the course which will focus on improving their Irish standards as Higher Level Irish is a requirement for entry into Primary School Teacher Training. I am delighted to be in a position to assist these students in achieving their ambitions.

Parents in the Santry Whitehall, Kilmore and Beaumont areas were surveyed in November of 2012 to ascertain their views on the choice of School Patronage that was available in their area. This was done as part of the ‘Forum on Patronage and Pluralism’, which is trying to provide more choice for parents. The results of the survey indicated that there is sufficient interest in the establishment of an Educate Together school. The Department are now engaging with the Archdiocese to see how best the wishes of parents in these areas can be satisfied.

ST DAVID’S CBS HELP WITH SUAS LITERACY PROJECT

ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR FORUM When issues of anti-social behaviour arise in a community, it is important to work constructively to find positive solutions, without drawing unnecessary negative attention to a particular estate or area. I have been working closely with a number of residents associations and Community Gardaí in Clontarf Garda station to try to resolve a recurring problem of anti-social behaviour which is of particular concern to a number of residents. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any policing or anti-social behaviour concerns.

I was delighted to assist Scoil Chiaráin Primary school in Donnycarney in establishing a literacy intitiative with ‘SUAS’ Educational Development Programmes. Transition Year students worked one-to-one with individual children to encourage them with their reading skills, four days a week for six weeks. This was an extremely intensive intervention and the St David’s lads acted as very positive role-models for their young learners. A big thanks to the principals of both schools for supporting this initiative
