PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE The development of Fairview Bridge earlier this year was welcome and adds both an aesthetic and practical asset to the area. The government made €500,000 available for this redevelopment which was badly needed. In adding to that, we should also acknowledge those who have brought pride to Fairview over the last several decades, which is why we called for a local plebiscite on a new name for the bridge. Suggestions have already included the Maureen Potter or Bram Stoker Bridge.

FAIRVIEW PLAYGROUND MARINO / FAIRVIEW SENIOR CITIZENS FORUM

Following years of campaigning which local residents will be aware of, we were delighted that last year finally saw the redevelopment of the Fairview Park Playground. The park is a truly magnificent amenity and is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when local communities, public representatives and Dublin City Council work together.

The Calderwood / Grace Park Community Policing Forum is an on-going project which we have been working on with Clontarf Garda Station. The forum provides an opportunity for local residents to address their policing concerns directly with the Gardaí and their local community policing unit. Issues which have so far been addressed at the forum include burglaries, anti-social behaviour and advice on home safety improvements. The next Calderwood / Grace Park Community Policing Forum will take place on Monday February 18th in the Goose Tavern at 8pm.

The Marino / Fairview Senior Citizens Forum is a local community based forum for senior citizens that is coordinated by my office. We try to arrange these forums once every quarter and past issues that have been discussed include the digital switchover and Dublin bus routes. In the past we have also arranged a Dáil Tour for those interested and if there was sufficient interest we would be happy to do so again. The next Marino / Fairview Senior Citizens Forum will take place on Friday, 15th February at 2pm in the Carleton Hall. Both Marino Home Help and the Casino Community Forum are providing excellent services for the elderly in the extended Faiview Marino Area. Protecting the Marino Home Help service was extremely important and the threat of closure of the service that occurred at the end of last year must never be repeated.

EDUCATE TOGETHER NC

DUBLIN BIKES FOR MARINO

The campaign for an Educate Together school for the Dublin North Central area was started in Fairview and now has support from surrounding areas including Marino and Drumcondra. The recently announced results of the Whitehall patronage survey have shown a desire within this community for a choice of schooling for local children. We are working hard with the committee to maximise the potential of Minister Quinn’s Patronage and Pluralism Forum. Please contact Educate Together North Central at info@educatetogethernc.com and www.educatetogethernc.com

GATHERING PROPOSAL FOR FAIRVIEW MARINO The 2013 Gathering initiative is aimed at promoting tourism nationally to give this important economic engine a boost. It is also crucial that local communities re-ignite their own sense of pride to encourage friends, family and visitors from outside and overseas to visit this area. As a result we will shortly be publishing a ‘Gathering Booklet’ for Fairview / Marino to promote this area as a tourist attraction, to promote local pride, and to hopefully boost economic activity for local business. More details will be available shortly.

FAIRVIEW CREDIT UNION Aodhán met with members of the Fairview Credit Union recently about their concerns with the upcoming Credit Union Bill and on the concept of volunteerism. The Bill passed through the Houses of the Oireachtas in December and a lot of feedback on the 2012 Bill was taken into account when it was at committee stage with the Minister for Finance accepting a number of amendments. The new Registrar for Credit Unions was appointed late last year and we are hoping to meet with her in the coming weeks to address some of the concerns about the future of the Credit Union movement in Ireland.

Dublin City Council have announced that the Dublin Bike scheme will be extended to Fairview / Marino area in the coming years. It will provide a crucial linkage with the city centre and encourage extra business for local employers. Residents with suggestions as to the best locations for DublinBike stations should contact Cllr Jane Horgan-Jones at horganjones.jane@gmail.com.

‘CONVENTION IN YOUR CLASSROOM’ IN LOCAL SCHOOLS Inspired by the Constitutional Convention which met for the first time last December, Aodhán’s ‘Convention in Your Classroom’ project has been rolled out in local schools including Mount Temple and Jane’s former school Dominican College Griffith Avenue. The concept in based on giving students a voice in the deliberations that are taking place in the convention, and the reaction of local students was extremely positive. More information on the convention can be seen at www.facebook.com/classconv.
