BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE, REDUCING UNEMPLOYMENT A Chara The Live Register in Mallow has fallen by 24% since the Government took office in 2011. The Government has exceeded the target of 100,000 new jobs which it set for itself when entering office. My target for Mallow has always been to create jobs and attract companies, such as Magni Industries, to the region. Employment through construction of local school projects are just as important as foreign companies setting up here. The success of indigenous companies, such as EPS, play a major role in ensuring the recovery is felt locally as well as nationally. The next step includes the South West Action Plan for jobs which, further specifies the sectors where towns such as Mallow can thrive. Plans like this become reality through the vision and hard work of organisations like the Mallow Development Partnership which, has a tangible effect on the town and the surrounding areas. If you have any query you would like to discuss with me, please don't hesitate to contact me at the office or online.

A NEW CHAPTER AT SCOIL GHOBNATAN I was delighted to officially open the new extension at Scoil Ghobnatan before the summer holidays. This is a vital piece of infrastructure for the school community on the Southside of Mallow and one I have championed since entering Government.

OVER €4.5 MILLION INVESTED IN MALLOW PRIMARY SCHOOLS TO DATE

I will continue to prioritise investment in bricks and mortar for our local schools so that our children across Mallow can learn and grow in a safe environment.

The investment of €4,742,779 in Mallow primary schools during my time in Government underpins my commitment since I entered Government to ringfence capital works in education locally. This investment has been spent locally and ensures a roadmap for all our schools for the future. I was delighted to recently confirm planning permission at the Davis College Campus and Gaelscoil Thomais Daibhis that will allow those school communities grow further. This is not just about securing educational facilities, it also creates jobs directly and indirectly for our community.

MDP SETS VISION FOR MALLOW

SUPPORTING NEW JOBS IN MALLOW The 50 new jobs at EPS are supported by Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland. EPS is a strong, intergenerational family company. They have shown major resilience through tough economic times. The Government is strongly supporting companies that have strong export potential in product and services. EPS has shown itself to be a strong leader in the water services sector. This jobs announcement comes on the back of a strong relationship with the IDA and Enterprise Ireland. I was delighted to partner with EPS on a recent Trade Mission to London where the company is seeking to expand its operations in the UK market.

Minister Seán Sherlock launching the new Mallow Development Partnership

I am very much involved with Mallow Development Partnership. It seeks to ensure economic sustainability and social progress for the town through a variety of projects. The success of the Maths & Science was underpinned by the excellent year long project commemorating Thomas Davis, amongst other projects. Structures are now in place that will streamline and focus the partnership for the future and assist job creation. I am looking forward to continuing to work with the Partnership and Mallow Chamber. This is a team effort, involving Mallow people working voluntarily for the future of the town.

I am in constant contact with the IDA on a number of developments related to the Mallow area, including supporting Magni Industries in Quartertown. I am confident of North Cork’s prime position within the IDA in the South West Region. IDA supported industries assist 491 jobs in the Mallow area – a significant number.

MALLOW RELIEF ROAD CAN DELIVER RESULTS

Minister Seán Sherlock with other members of the Mallow Representative Group meeting with Minister for Transport Paschal Donohue

I led a delegation this month from Mallow to Dublin to discuss the importance of a relief road for the town. The Mallow Representative Group carried out an independent assessment to further the case to re-activate the planning and development process to complete the relief road for Mallow. As the local Minister I was delighted to initiate this meeting with my Ministerial colleague, Paschal Donohue. This report makes the strong business case for the relief road, a road that is vital to the continued advancement of the town of Mallow. This report allows the opportunity to make the national economic gains viable for the people of Mallow. Business and civil society working in tandem have made a strong case and it is one I fully support. A report was submitted to the Group by Indecon International Economic Consultants, which outlined that the project would deliver overall user benefits in the order of €90 million for Mallow.

FREE GP CARE FOR MALLOW UNDER 6S There has been a 93% uptake by North Cork GPs and parents can still register by logging onto www.gpvisitcard.ie. The online system is easy-to-use and is as simple as booking a flight. Anyone who has any queries or questions can contact my office where we’d be happy to show people through the sign-up process. I am delighted to finally see this initiative being rolled out across the country, because it will ease the pressure on working families, and give peace of mind to parents of sick children. It means that no parent of young children will ever be in a position again where money becomes an obstacle to bringing their child to a GP. Without Labour in Government, this simply would not have happened. It is perhaps the single most important development in primary care in the history of the State, and my colleague, Primary Care Minister Kathleen Lynch, played a crucial in getting it across the line.

CHARTERING ROADMAPS FOR NEW BUSINESSES The past year has seen impressive results for the Cork North and West Local Enterprise Office. A total of 164 jobs have been created in LEO assisted companies and numbers employed in these projects now stands at over 1300 people. The success of the LEO in Cork North and West cannot be underestimated. Aside from financial assistance, the key support that many entrepreneurs look for is mentoring and guidance, something that the LEO system has proven expertise at. I look forward to these results being improved on and growing even further. Ensuring that entrepreneurs have the tailor made support they need for their business prospects is crucial to the economic recovery. The LEO delivers a full range of training and development programmes and during the past year over 1,200 people have participated in these core programmes. Seminars and Networking are a key feature of the LEO offerings and these range from Womens Networking events to Export Opportunities and Speednetworking for small business. Over 58% of those attending core training are women, in line with the LEO objective of encouraging more women to enter business. LOCAL SUPPORT, GLOBAL TARGETS FOR MALLOW HANDBALL I was honoured to officially open the new Mallow Handball Alley recently, which we secured using Sports Capital Funding of €110,000. Mallow Handball is a crucial community facility in Mallow. Mallow Handball Club has produced many All-Ireland and World champions. I wish them the best of luck in their quest to compete at the World Championships in Canada this year.

WINNING BACK MAIN STREET Traffic lights in Mallow are causing a serious problem to commuters and traders. I have engaged with Cork County Council to turn off the lights completely until a proper solution is found. I welcome the half hour free parking but I do believe that clarity is needed on the operation of the system. There is confusion as to how the first half hour operates.

SUPPORTING COPE, BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY

A great afternoon was had by residents, staff and community supporters as they celebrated reaching the national standards fopr people with intellectual disabilities who live in a residential setting. COPE provides excellent care and support. People in Glen Lodge and Bellevue of COPE foundation Mallow had a vision which is now a reality through hard work.

GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS, LOCAL IMPACT In my role as Minister in the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade I engage with many organisations like Trocaire, Concern and GOAL, along with missionaries led by nuns and priests. I have led four trade missions in 2015 to markets in the European Union including the United Kingdom, France and Estonia. These trade missions have included North Cork companies looking to scale up and create jobs locally. My role as Trade Promotion Minister is to assist companies looking to export to our nearest markets and our exports underpin the economic recovery. My role also funds the work of agencies such as Trócaire, which have a long, proud track record in helping those overseas. Minister Seán Sherlock with United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki Moon
