World Rural Landscape initiative: aim and outputs
The International Scientific Committee on Cultural Landscapes ICOMOS-IFLA (ISCCL) has decided to promote a Document on Rural Landscapes (ISCCL Meeting in Fontainebleau. 26th October-2nd November 2011) and has launched in 2012 the World Rural Landscape Initiative, that is aimed in promoting worldwide cooperation in the protection, understanding and management of rural landscapes, starting from the awareness that rural landscapes are a cultural heritage around all the world. Outputs of the Initiative: ✓ A Principles’ text: it encompasses:definitions of rural landscape and its values, action principles to ensure understanding, protection, sustainable management and transmission of rural landscapes (endorsed by ICOMOS and IFLA). ✓ A series of Appendices to the Principles’ text (under construction): 1. An Atlas of Rural landscapes in the World; 2. A Glossary of key terms; 3. An International Bibliography. ✓ A Website for collaboration and dissemination of the Initiative, that will be associated with a web workspace, and a collaborative network (the website is under updating).

Rural landscape & estates. Web-conference, 22nd March 2018
The web-meeting on "Rural landscapes & Estates" on 22nd March 2018 is aimed to be the first occasion to discuss about the relationships between villas-estates and rural landscapes all over the World, as a case study to improve Atlas structure e methods.
During the congress on Capability Brown (Bath 2016) and the Annual Meeting of ICOMOS-IFLA International Scientific Committee on Cultural Landscapes- ISCCL (Bath 2016), a small group of scholars agreed to the opportunity to highlight in historic gardens studies (more than today) the systems of relationships between villas/palaces-gardens and their agricultural land and activities (estates). As history of gardens stresses, villas usually have been the centres of huge rural productive landscapes (estates): villagarden/rural landscape is a functional and formal historical rural system, not only limited to the "villa-garden" unit. Aim of the web-meeting is to collect and document examples of this type of rural landscape systems around the world. The web conference want to be a first basis for larger and deeper studies. Some examples of Rural landscape systems of villas/estates as unit: • can be found in Italy, for example in Tuscany (most of them Medici villas) or in Veneto. • could be found in other European Countries (Germany, France, UK) and there are even small examples, such as the “manorial landscapes” in Scandinavia or in Eastern Europe. • can be found in other Continents (English estates in Australia, or huge estates in North America, both realized mainly since XVII-XIX century).
System of systems: in many cases, villa/palace, together with its garden and rural land, is not a single complex, but it can be seen as part of a larger scale system, involving other villas-estates belonging to the same place and creating an articulated complex. Protection and management use: reading rural landscape and estates using a systemic approach can help to develop a better protection of this type of property, defining landscape units and its level of integrity.

The Landscape system approach stresses the system of relationships among the landscape components and helps to define: • landscape unit; • landscape integrity level; • landscape protection.

Sometimes, legal protection is only for the formal area of historic gardens
