exploring the use of illustrative methods & techniques for fantasy narratives

Consider the use of illustrative techniques when imagining characters, creatures and settings of a ďŹ ctional nature. look at the way dierent types of narratives are imagined through history and explore the use of those new technologies in relation to older narratives. create your own illustrated narrative using the skills you develop over the course of this module.

possible tasks & outcomes workshop/task ideas: - re-imagine an old narrative with with a new illustrative style - re-imagine a narrative in as many different illustrative styles as possible (One-a-day) - create concept art and for a new fantasy narrative (game, film, book etc) and show how it would be applied

possible outcomes: - an illustrated book, comic book, encyclopaedia, or collection of works - a portfolio website, encyclopaedic website or interactive website - posters, prints, merchandise, branding tests - animation (through use of cinema 4D or after effects) e.g scene tests

sources of Inspiration I am taking inspiration from my own love of fantasy narratives and concept art. I am really interested by the way franchises such as Star Wars are able to incorporate the use of and take advantage of new technologies while still keeping the aesthetic known to the cult following. My main interest is looking at the ways concept artists are able to create intire worlds from smaller narratives and the detail which goes into creating a fully immersive storyline.

Other inspirations include the work of Nicolas Francoeur, who re-imagined The Neverending Story, one of my favourite narratives in a new style of digital painting.

As well as this, Alice in Wonderland is an extremely well known narrative which has been imagined in many dierent ways over the years. I would like to explore the way each of these styles imacts the narrative itself.

research, methods & development plan I have 13 weeks left in which to complete the work for this module as well as work for the Professional Presentation module. I consider it extremely important that I stay up to date with this work and continue to make progress on it as often as possible.

- I will begin by researching dierent narratives and the ways in which they have been re-imagined. If I come across a narrative that has not been illustrated in a way I can imagine then I might use that as a starting point for a new smaller task - I will assign mysef smaller tasks throughout the 13 weeks such as the creation of a short narrative that can be re-imagined in many dierent illustrative styles (comic book illustrtion, 3D rendering, ink illustration, digital painting etc) - Through the development of these tasks and research, I will attempt to develop a theme of my own through which I can create a body of work for my ďŹ nal outcome

audience, reception & career oppertunities The main target audience for fantasy narratives would be young children and teenagers with young adults showing an interest in the more complex narratives.

However, certain narratives like Star Wars and Lord of The Rings are able to transcend most standard genre preferences to the point that most people you encounter will have seen and probably enjoyed at least one of those movies or books. Elements of these certain narratives are also so easily recogniseable that you can re-imagine the characters or elements in different styles and the narrative would still be apparent.

I do understand the competative and unreliable nature of being a professional illustrator, but it is something I really enjoy doing. Whether or not I end up in that field, this is what I would like to pursue for the last part of my education.

I believe these skills can be useful in many different areas of graphic design and visual arts as illustration can be usef for means of advertising, branding, concept art for game and film and many other areas.

Because of this I am confident I will develop usefull skills and a relevant body of work to lead me into a career after graduation.
