The Fearless Four German quartet Salut Salon brings its unconventional and musically-adventurous style to the NCPA. By Ela Das
ngelika [Bachmann] and I got to know one another, in school, when we were 11 years old,” says Iris Siegfried, one of the two founding members of the quartet, Salut Salon. “We were sitting next to each other in the school orchestra and shared the same sense of humour. From then on, we loved making music together and playing the double concerto of Bach. Through our years in university, we shared a flat and financed a trip around the world busking. Back home, every last Friday of the month, we played together and with other friends at a private soiree, a so-called salon in Hamburg, mixing classical music with songs we liked, and adding bits and pieces of acrobatic ideas. That was the beginning of Salut Salon. Our cellist, Frederike [Dany] joined us four years ago and Olga is our [Shkrygunova] new Russian pianist.” Salut Salon, a quartet from Hamburg, founded by two childhood companions and violinists, Iris Siegfried and Angelika Bachmann, has been a constant box office sell-out around the world with concerts comprising brilliantly arranged medleys and solo interpretations, humorous musical cabaret and poetic puppet shows. As well as cruelly satirical chanson and sizzling tango, interwoven so masterfully that the usually cool, respectable Hamburgers are swept with excitement.

In a concert hall, where the atmosphere is usually stiff, the audience gets a refreshing change with their idiosyncratic acts (such as an acrobatic performance of competitive instrument playing), which are a real hoot, but clearly require strong teamwork and precise timing – you will be left simultaneously roaring with laughter and holding your breath in awe. KILL YOUR DARLINGS The quartet likes to keep their creative process simple. “Our idea of making music is easy – we want to have fun. All the arrangements are made by us and we only present and play pieces of music we love to hear ourselves. If one of us has an idea for a new song or piece we could play onstage, we work on it and decide its performance together. Of course, four women have at least five different opinions, but there’s always one rule – we only stop working and practising on an arrangement or a song when all four of us are really happy with the result. Sadly, sometimes along the way, we have to kill our darlings even though a tune is brilliant, yet doesn’t seem performable,” says Siegfried. The four have managed to come up with somewhat of a winning idea for what works onstage and what their audiences want as recordings of their performances have broken the social media with phenomenal reviews. While promoting the fourth instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean, this Spanish beauty presented a sea change from her on-screen pirate persona. For a photo call, she wowed the crowds by leaving her lustrous tresses long and sleek, which were complemented by her natural hair volume. In contrast, on the red carpet, she pulled her hair back into a high, thick ponytail and added a fringe, short enough to accentuate her perfect features and sweet almond eyes.

The former Victoria’s Secret supermodel also changed her look from sleek and chic to old Hollywood glamour. Wearing a striking black cut-out gown, she tied her hair in a long, straight ponytail, enhancing her cheekbones and smoky eye make-up. By evening, she played out the red carpet glamour quotient with a short curly bob parted to the side, which beautifully framed her face and rose-coloured lips.

La Villa
Pondicherry, India Along the Coromandel Coast, where streets bear names such as Rue de la Campaigne and Rue Labourdonnais, Pondicherry is a palmfringed town, graced with tree-lined boulevards and houses with long verandahs and elegant compound walls, reminiscent of Frenchcolonial India. Sylvaine Ségiyane Paquiry, moved back to his hometown in 2006 to open a midrange boutique hotel, La Villa Shanti, and now, it’s luxury cousin, La Villa. Originally a 19thcentury home called Villa Notre Dame de la Garde, the intimate, six-bedroom hotel combines a respect for the building’s heritage with a clear-eyed approach to contemporary design, preserving the original features of the structure, wherever possible. Officially opening on August 1, La Villa boasts of a rooftop swimming pool, 12-table graden resturant (serving simple cuisine inspired by ingredients produced nearby – the proximity of the organic farms and cheesemakers make for an unusually broad selection) and a small boutique selling items sourced locally. lavillapondicherry.com
BLANK CANVAS
! ! Perhaps the piece that most caught everyone’s attention at the February round of London Fashion Week was Burberry’s poncho-drape blanket coat. Inspired by the Burberry Heritage archive, which revealed outerwear capes designed by the brand dating back to the 1880s! A constant on the shoulders of Cara Delevinge and Olivia Palermo, you can now order your own monogrammed one. Monogramming services will be available in store and online, at burberry.com this September onwards.
BAKE STATION
!
A new bakery in Los Altos — Voyageur du Temps — offers high-end artisanal pastries.
A downtown building, formerly serving as a stop along the Southern Pacific Railroad, has reopened its doors as a bakery cafe. Inspired by time travel, Voyageur du Temps (time traveller in French), gets its logo from the roman numeral 5, from a French clock, to jump out and make a statement. The bakery staff is trained to use traditional Parisian-style methods to create madefrom-scratch breads and pastries, creating the perfect croissant! With an open kitchen, which allows customers to see the pastry chefs at work, the bakery offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The owner, Rie Rubin, is originally from Japan. She’s brought in two chefs from Tokyo, who’ve studied in Paris. As a result, the menu has a combination of Japanese and French breads and pastries — think green tea croissants, shokupan, and chocolate cubes.
