LA CALA NEWS

WELCOME

Dear Members, Residents and Guests, Welcome to the latest edition of our resort newsletter. This is a very special year for us as we celebrate the 1989 opening of Campo Asia. Inside, you will find details of the many events that have been held to mark the 20th anniversary. In particular, your attention is drawn to the report on the gala night which was attended by representatives of the owners, members, management, business partners and the most significant regional authorities. It was pleasing to hear first hand that the authorities hold La Cala as the example for residential golf resorts to follow in the future. Special mention was reserved for the continued support and involvement of the resort’s promoter FBD Holdings plc, the publicly quoted Irish Insurance Company. The commemorative publication that was distributed on the night includes some unique articles and photos from the early years and can be viewed by clicking on the Celebrating 20 years logo on the home page of www.lacala.com. So much has happened in the last twenty years that it is difficult to pick out the highlights on the road to becoming the largest golf complex in Spain. We are very proud of the important development in facilities such as the three courses, clubhouse, hotel, spa and other amenities. We are also delighted to have hosted many major national and international tournaments - both professional and amateur. However, in a way, our greatest achievement is the ongoing development of a real, vibrant community of owners with over 17 nationalities now represented. It is a great compliment for the resort that so many people choose to spend all or a large part of their lives here. They are La Cala’s greatest ambassadors with many having introduced friends and family members to the resort; people who in turn have been so impressed that they have subsequently purchased here also. In the centrepiece of this newsletter, we are including a special section on the lifestyle in the resort as seen through the eyes of a number of our residents. They have been attracted by the peace and tranquillity, the amazing views, the golf courses and other facilities and the location near the coast, airport, towns, etc. With major infrastructural changes underway in the region, such as the new airport terminal, the coastal railway extension and the sailing port for Mijas, the future looks very bright for the resort. Finally, a special welcome is extended to our newest residents in our Monte Alto and Real Altavista Golf developments. Our special offers on golf membership when buying directly from the promoter continue as does the Privilege Card Scheme which allows owners to avail of a number of advantages at the various resort facilities. Whether you are here full-time or visit the resort for your holidays or celebrations, don’t forget that you can stay in touch with all the news and offers through our website, www.lacala.com. Thank you for choosing La Cala.

La Cala Resort is example for other businesses to follow

a Cala Resort is an example for other golf and tourism businesses to follow if the Costa del Sol is to maintain its position as the leading golf destination in Europe and its important position in world golf as a quality destination. This is according to the Managing Director of the Costa del Sol Tourism Board, Ana Gómez. Speaking at a night of celebration to mark the 20 th anniversary of the resort, Ana Gómez added: “We in the Tourism Board are extremely proud of La Cala Resort and the quality of its facilities and staff and we recognise the great work it is doing in the promotion of golf in the Costa del Sol. Everyone is aware that we are experiencing an international credit crisis at the moment and we are working to motivate everyone so that when this crisis ends we will still be the acknowledged leaders. To achieve this we need cooperation between public institutions and private enterprise and La Cala is a great example of such cooperation. This is why we are so proud to have a complex such as La Cala Resort, Spain’s largest golf complex, to maintain our position in world golf.”

The Deputy Mayor of Mijas, Ana Román, echoed this view. “We are very proud to have this magnificent complex here in Mijas. It has become an example to follow and is renowned at world level. In addition it has given much good employment at a local level and has been an important driver in the Mijas economy. We would like to thank the owners of La Cala for choosing Mijas as the location for this fantastic resort.” The President of the Golf Federation of Andalusia, Ángel de la Riva, added that his organisation was also very proud of La Cala and praised its willingness to stage all types of golf events, from the local amateur competitions to international tournaments. Ramón Dávila, the President of Promotur, the Promoters Association of Residential Tourism and Sports in Andalusia, said: “We are very proud to have a member such as La Cala Resort. It is the biggest and most important resort in Spain and it’s important that other investors follow its example. Twenty years of hard work has transformed agricultural land into an extraordinary resort, both for Andalucía and for Spain.”

LA CALA NEWS

La Cala’s Director of Leisure, José Navas, said the complex was at the vanguard of golf at a national level and was a point of reference for the sport at European level. He pointed out some of its most recent achievements such as setting a Guinness World Record for the most players to play in a one-day competition, having surpassed one million green fees and the staging of important international professional tournaments. Referring to the credit crisis, he pointed out that with the backing of its owners, the Irish insurance company, FBD Holdings plc, the resort had seen and survived a similar crisis in the 1990s and there was no doubt it would continue to be a world leader when the current crisis abates.

to reach the complex. He said he was delighted to still be involved with the resort and hoped to witness many more positive changes in the future.

The addresses were delivered at the start of an evening of celebrations held in the resort’s clubhouse. Invited guests enjoyed food and drinks on the clubhouse terrace while images of the development of the resort were displayed. There was a special 20 th anniversary competition on the following day, Saturday, July 18 th on Campo Asia. Although it was a perfect day for scoring, only one player managed to beat his handicap. Former La Cala Captain, Francisco Cervilla shot 39 points off 6 handicap to win the overall award and the men’s category by three from Torsten Berg, one of the original shareholders in the resort. La Cala’s current captain, Mike Fisher, was third on 34. The ladies section went to Sylvia Robbins with 36 points. She won by three from Ritva Hagglund and Sonya Foster was third on the same score. A special press prize went to Chris McCarthy on 36 points. Francisco Cervilla said he had played all his golf since he took up the sport in 1995 at La Cala Resort. He stated that the resort was so good he decided to stay as a member and he is very happy that he did so. Torsten Berg also recalled the early days when you had to cross a river bed Ana Román, Deputy Mayor of Mijas, making a presentation to La Cala Resort’s José Navas.

Golf Challenge at La Cala Resort raises €150,000

T

Bobby Davro, Billy Murray, Max Clifford and Des O Connor.

he Max Clifford Celebrity Golf Challenge held in June for the UK-based charity, the Rhys Daniels Trust, was a huge success, raising €150,000. Max Clifford is the most famous publicist in the U.K. and the charity has held a golf competition on the Costa del Sol for the past nine years raising a total of almost a million euros. The event consisted of two days of team golf on Campo Asia and Campo America. A charity auction was then held in Marbella with large sums being paid for the

wide range of special auction items including a day with the Sky sports football commentary team at any Premier league match.

The Rhys Daniels Trust provides dedicated accommodation close to regional hospitals around the UK for families to use free of charge whilst their child is receiving life saving treatment a long way from home. Founder and chairman of the charity, Barry Daniels, experienced the need for this service when his son Rhys was undergoing a bone marrow transplant in Bristol. Barry said he was once again delighted with the event and confirmed it would return to La Cala next year. The proceedings were filmed for Sky Sports and were shown on all four sports channels in a 90 minute programme. The radio station Talk Radio Europe also broadcast a live programme from the welcome dinner, interviewing many of the celebrities. Amongst those who took part were: Des O’ Connor, Andy Gray, Ray Wilkins, Gary McAllister, Jean-Christophe Novelli, Bobby Davro, Paul Jewell, Ian St. John, John Gregory, Dave Beasant, Dennis Taylor, Steve Sedgley, Stan Boardman, Kenny Lynch, Billy Murray and European Tour winner Philip Golding.

Marbella Golf Cup

T

he Marbella Golf Cup was held on the last weekend in August. Promoted by the Barcelona-based Sota Par magazine and Golf Travel & Events, the competition, which is part of a circuit, was run in a number of clubs in Marbella and surrounding areas over the summer months. The idea is to promote golf tourism in the area during the months of July and August. The final two days of the Cup were played on Campo Europa and Campo America. The Marbella Golf Cup organiser is Nuria Puig. “Every aspect of the competition has been perfect here in La Cala. The organisation over the weekend and the condition of the courses were really great.” Nuria confirmed that the finals of the circuit will be held in the resort next year.

GAA Legends’ Golf Spectacular is Great Success

T

he GAA Legend’s golf spectacular held over three days in May raised over €50,000 for various charities. The event pits teams of former inter-county players from the Republic of Ireland’s 32 counties against each other with the proceeds going to charity.

The event was won by the team from Tipperary who raised €25,000 for their preferred charity, Tipperary Hospice and Friends. The four provincial winners and three daily winners also each raised €26,000 for their selected charities. Famous names who competed this year included: Eoin (Bomber) Liston, Mike Sheehy and legendary Munster rugby forward Mick Galwey (Kerry), Eddie Keher (Kilkenny), Jack Sheedy (Dublin), Michael Cleary (Tipperary), Denis Allen (Cork), Paul Flynn (Waterford), David Beggy (Meath), Liam Griffin (Wexford) and Euro Tour player Paul McGinley’s father, Michael, who represented Donegal. The chairperson of the organising committee is former Meath inter-county player and TV analyst Bernard Flynn: “This event is about a group of past players coming together in a competitive environment with one goal in mind, to raise much needed funds for the charity of their choice. There has been a great bond between players when they retire,

especially on the golf course. It has been the common denominator in cementing many of those friendships thus leading to this unique event. We are delighted to have been able to stage it at La Cala Resort, an Irish-owned resort and it turned out to be a great event. All the players have been loud in their praise of the resort and the organisation of the competition. We look forward to coming back to La Cala next year.”

ccompanied by manager Joe Dooley, eight members of the Offaly senior hurling squad from Ireland played Campo America in late April. They were on a midseason training break in Benalmádena. Dooley hurled with the Offaly senior intercounty team from 1982 until 2000. He is the only Offaly player to have played in six senior all-Ireland finals winning three AllIreland medals. This was not his first visit to La Cala. “I have played here many times before and I love it. It really is a fabulous resort,” he commented. The Offaly players with Joe Dooley, third from right.

England U-21s train at the resort before European Championships

T

he England U-21 squad spent five days in a training camp at the resort before the start of the European Championship in Sweden in June. The team lost out in the final of the competition to Germany. The 19-man squad and 14 backroom staff held training sessions every day on the full-size pitch and also used the gymnasium and Caracala Spa. A number of the players and manager Stuart Pearce also took the opportunity to play on the three golf courses. Pearce said he was delighted with the La Cala Resort facilities. “It is absolutely fantastic here. The hotel is lovely and the pitch is perfect. It really is great for us to come here and prepare for the finals. Its also very quiet and tranquil for us. I’m not surprised you get so many teams using the facilities. Three of the squad members could not come but all the rest are here and we are looking forward to a successful campaign in Sweden.” Stuart Pearce’s role in the England set-up was extended in January 2008 when new manager Fabio Capello appointed him as a coach for the senior England team in addition to his Under-21 duties. As a player, Pearce had a long and distinguished career, becoming one of the most highly regarded defenders his country has ever produced, best remembered for his time at Nottingham Forest and his England international duties.

12

West Ham United‘s James Tomkins commented: “We’re training in the mornings and then have a bit of spare time in the afternoons. It gives us a chance to to relax and get ready for what we have to come. A few of us have had a couple of games of golf. I’m playing off around 20, but hopefully I can bring it down. It’s just nice to play in good weather as it doesn’t happen so much when we’re in England. But it’s beautiful out here and we’re able to relax as a team.” After the conclusion of the tournament, The FA’s Operations’ Manager, Carol Day said: “The team spoke many times during the final tournament about what a fantastic time all staff and players had at La Cala and we are sure that our training camp at your resort was instrumental in our success in reaching the final of the tournament. We could not have asked for better facilities, pitch and service for our tournament preparations. “From a personal point of view I would also like to thank you for all your support during our planning of the event and throughout our stay. It was an absolute pleasure to work with you and I hope that we will work together again in the future. I would not hesitate to recommend your facilities and I am sure we will be back with another England Team in the future.”

FC Porto & Atlante FC both stay at the resort

B

oth FC Porto and Atlante FC stayed at the resort as the prestigious Peace Cup tournament reached its conclusion in July. The Peace Cup is a tournament for club teams, currently held every two years, and is contested by clubs from several continents. Atlante used the resort as their base throughout the competition, while Porto arrived in preparation for their semi-final clash against eventual winners, Aston Villa. Portuguese champions, FC Porto, have a proud domestic and international record, being crowned champions of Europe in 1987 and 2004. Atlante FC, who play in the Mexican First Division League, are the current champions of the CONCACAF’s Champions League and will be representing the region at the next FIFA Club World Cup. Both teams expressed their complete satisfaction with their preparations at La Cala. FC Porto team manager, Acacio Valentim, said they were very pleased with their short stay at the resort in preparation for the semi-final, adding that everything had been ideal for them. “The staff of the hotel did everything in order to respond to our needs and made us comfortable. The most important thing that we aim for is to make every player comfortable, relaxed and one hundred per cent focussed during training. FC Porto reached that goal in Mijas.” Atlante Vice-president Oscar Nicastro: “The resort had everything we needed to prepare for the tournament. The micro climate is very similar to our home base in Cancun. We were very well treated here. Everything was excellent, from the pitch, the spa and the other facilities to the food, accommodation and the service. We had a great opportunity to progress further in the competition but it wasn’t to be. The English team (Aston Villa) that defeated us were very strong but it was very worthwhile coming to Spain to take part in the competition.”

and coach, José Guadalupe, presented the councillors with a club pennant signed by all the squad members. The councillors, meanwhile, presented the team with a reproduction of the facade of the Town Hall building. Raimundo Palacios said they decided to stay at La Cala Resort because of its “excellent facilities and the tranquillity it offers as well as having a football pitch within the complex, which enables us to prepare for the matches.” Francisco Marín said the council was very proud that a team of the quality of Atlante had chosen to stay in Mijas and he wished them good luck in their remaining matches. La Cala Resort’s Director of Leisure, José Navas, said the resort has hosted many international football and cycling teams of the highest level. “Although the resort is mainly concentrated on golf, we offer football teams the possibility of training on a grass pitch and therefore teams such as Atlante can choose us as their base for training or competitions.”

Twelve teams took part in the competition this year, with matches being held in Madrid and Andalucía: The participating teams were: Real Madrid, Aston Villa, Málaga, Lyon, Sevilla FC, Juventus, FC Porto, Besiktas, Liga de Quito, Al-Ittihad, Seongnam and Atlante. Meanwhile, a municipal delegation from Mijas Town Hall greeted the visiting Mexican team. The delegation was led by the councillor in charge of sports, Franscisco Marín. oca-Cola Championship side Peterborough United F.C. returned to La Cala Resort for a week-long training camp in June. The club have used the resort as a training base for the last two years, when they

gained promotion from League Two and then from League One. Their manager is Darren Ferguson, the ex-Manchester United striker and son of Sir Alex Ferguson. He said La Cala has been a lucky training base for the club. “La Cala has been perfect for us for the last two years and gave us a great start to both seasons. It is hard to gain promotion to the Premier League after two successful campaigns but we will be giving it a good go. The chairman has not sold any of our good players so that is even better than making new signings. It is a hard league but we are all looking forward to it. “La Cala is ideal for us. The surface of the pitch is fantastic at a time when many pitches in the U.K. are hard and can cause injuries. The hotel and the staff are great and all the training facilities are excellent. Everyone has been very helpful and all our needs are attended to immediately, so it’s top-class service. We get very well looked after here. It is important for the players to bond and this gives the new signings a chance to get to know the rest of the squad.” Peterborough United’s links with the Costa del Sol have been forged by their chairman, Darragh MacAnthony of MRI Overseas Property, based in Marbella. “La Cala ticks all the boxes as far as I’m concerned. It has all the facilities we need,” he commented.

oca-Cola Championship side Barnsley F.C. spent a week in training at the resort in mid-July. This was the club’s first visit to the resort after being in Portugal for the previous two pre-seasons. Manager Simon Davey says

they were delighted with the change to Spain and La Cala Resort. “Everything has been great for us here and hopefully it will help us to have a good start in the league campaign. The pitch is in very good condition and it’s nice and soft, which reduces the chances of injuries. Everything here is on-site and that is a huge advantage. The players love the hydrotherapy pool in the spa and the gym and we are also playing some golf. Warm weather training can be very beneficial in raising fitness levels. We are up in the hills here so they have to contend with that as well as the heat so all the training has a greater intensity and will be very beneficial to them ahead of the new season. We will certainly be back.” Barnsley have spent more seasons in the second tier of English football than any other club in history. Barnsley secured their status in the Coca-Cola Championship on the last day of the 2008-2009 season with a 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle.

La Cala & You Summer Challenge

T

he La Cala & You Summer Challenge took place in July for the members of the resort’s affinity programme. The event consisted of three days of golf and accommodation. After an opening practice round, the better-ball, stableford competition was held over two days with the eventual winners being Alistair Marshall and Philip Flaxman. There was a wide range of nationalities represented with players from Spain, the UK, Ireland, Germany and Norway competing.

The general reaction of the competitors was extremely positive, not only to the competition format and organisation, but also to the concept of the club members having the opportunity to meet and develop friendships that can be renewed on an annual basis at subsequent events. There were many new faces in addition to regular visitors with men, ladies and juniors competing. Many of the players stayed in Hotel La Cala where they get preferential rates. In addition to the prizes all the entrants received a bottle of wine from Domecq Bodegas. Earlier in the year over 50 players took part in the La Cala & You Open, held in April. There are now almost 1,300 members of the La Cala & You scheme that was launched in May of 2007. In total, 24 countries are represented. The scheme offers a range of discounts on the resort’s facilities, including green fee, spa and accommodation offers, vouchers for complimentary buggies and special competitions, such as the Summer Challenge. There is no joining fee for the La Cala & You scheme. For more information e-mail: you@lacala.com or visit www. lacala.com.

Andalucía Golf Circuit - La Cala Resort Trophy

A

t the halfway stage in the inaugural Andalucia Golf - La Cala Resort Circuit the men’s section was a very close thing at the top of the table with only two points separating the leading two pairs. After the third event in the six-competition, fourball series, Hugo Crozier and Cristobal Jaime lead by only 2 points from Aurelio José Barriuso and José Diaz. There is then 10 points to the third placed pair, Adam Ford

and Guillermo Elias Moreno. The ladies section is being led by Ritva Hagglund and Carol Rees while Isabella Muller and Mike Robbins lead the mixed category. The third round was played at the end of July on Campo Europa and produced some very good scoring. Judi Lentelink and Kate Bradley scored an amazing 48 points to win the ladies section by nine points. Aurelio José Barriuso and José Diaz returned 44 points to take the men’s category while Isabella Muller and Mike Robbins won the mixed with 43 points. The circuit is in recognition of La Cala being voted the Best Golf Resort in Andalucía in 2008 in the first awards ceremony organised by the prestigious magazine Andalucía Golf. The final will be held on 12th December (Campo America). The qualifiers for the final will be decided on a ranking basis with the first three in the ranking, from each category, invited to play the final and stay one night in Hotel La Cala. The final competition is also open. The entry fee for all the qualifying competitions is €49 per player, which includes the green fee, a shared buggy, snacks and refreshments. There is also a special rate in Hotel La Cala for participants. For further details visit www.lacala.com. Isabella Muller & Mike Robbins, halfway leaders of the Mixed Category.

Europe play America in Ryder Cup-style Matches

T

wo Ryder Cup-style matches between English and American teams took place at the resort in April. The Cyder Cup has been played between a team from Gateway Golf & Country Club in Florida and the Star society from England since 1999. This was the first year the event took place in Spain and the U.S. captain, Tom Rybar, said it was really enjoyable and a great competition at La Cala. “This was the first time we had played in Spain and we found the courses to be very challenging and really enjoyable. We play the exact same format as the Ryder Cup with foursomes, fourballs and singles and we also had a practice day.” Organiser, Mike Smith, agreed that it has been a complete success. “I’d like to thank La Cala for the superb organisation of the competition. All the players thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as did our WAGS (Wives and Girlfriends) or Ciderettes, as the Americans call them. La Cala was recommended by some of our members who knew the complex and we are very happy we came here.”

They were founded 11 years ago and the annual match has previously visited: Ireland, England, Portugal and the US. As with the Ryder Cup proper, the matches alternate between the U.S. and Europe. This was the first trip to Spain and organisers Guy Marsh and Tim Le Sage said they thoroughly enjoyed the resort. “We prefer a venue with at least two courses in excellent condition and La Cala was perfect. Some of us had previously been to La Cala and recommended it to friends. Recently opened direct flights from New York to Málaga made the trip more acceptable and affordable. It was good value and we would like to thank the staff and club members for making the trip a truly memorable event.”

Timbo`s Tonkers & GFARS

Meanwhile, just a couple of weeks earlier there was a similar encounter when Timbo´s Tonkers took on the GFARS. Timbo´s Tonkers was founded 26 years ago in London as a hockey team that switched to cricket before finally graduating to golf. The U.S. team, Guys From A Real Country (GFARS), hail from Fairmount Country Club in New Jersey.

Twentieth Anniversary Pro-Am

A

th

20 Anniversary Pro-Am was held in glorious sunshine this summer on Campo Europa. The professionals played with teams of three amateurs and also played a separate individual competition. This was won with a fine 2-under par 69 by Nick Lane, with Juan Rosa second on 71 and Ivo José ParejaObregon third on 72. The team competition went to the team of Carlos Alberto Ruiz, Juan Carlos Parada, José Antonio Moreno and José Nicolás López.

Nick Lane was delighted with his round, especially as it was the first time he had played Campo Europa. “I have played Campo Asia and Campo America many times and enjoyed them. As this was the first time I played Campo Europa my course management could have been a problem but it worked out for me. The course was in great condition and I take off my hat to the greenkeepers and management for having the three courses in such a great condition. There are a few scary tee shots and you have to be able to shape the ball left and right. I live in Calahonda and I also love using Caracala Spa in the resort’s hotel. I go there with my wife at least once a month.” Cristobal Jaime was another professional who was very happy with the competition. “It was a magnificent day and the course is very good. You have to play well to score and the greens are very true. There are many slopes to negotiate and that makes it difficult.” Mark Sibley agreed, “Campo Europa is in incredible condition. It is very well maintained with true, fast greens. The day was extremely well organised.” Francisco Mariscal Del Saz-Orozco added, “The greens are large and very fast with a lot of slopes. It was a very enjoyable day and a course you have to know. I’m looking forward to playing it again.”

The top three professionals: Juan Rosa, Nick Lane & Ivo José Pareja-Obregon with Gabriel De la Rosa of La Cala Resort.

Living the Dream

Property Lifestyle Section by Pedro Negrette - La Cala Resort General Manager & Property Director Over the past 20 years, La Cala Resort has established itself as one of the real success stories of the property market in southern Spain. Since 1989 the continual investment in quality developments and facilities has resulted in a large demand for properties from both local and foreign investors. We really have so many advantages here for the investor, be it for holidays or a permanent residence. This is a stunning location with some of the best views imaginable. It offers a real alternative to the hustle and bustle of the coast, yet is just minutes from the coast with its many beaches and tourist attractions. We are the largest golf resort in Spain and the popularity of the courses can be evidenced by the tens of thousands of players who return year after year. Many of our property owners first came to play golf and were so impressed they decided to buy. Likewise with many hotel guests who came for a holiday and now have homes here. For the non-golfer, other attractions include the luxury Caracala Spa, rated as one of the best in the area, tennis and squash courts and a gymnasium. Resorts that can offer the range of after-sales services such as ours are not common. We have a dedicated after-sales department that can help the buyer with almost any task imaginable, from preparing your apartment before your arrival, to helping you to deal with government departments. We have a 24-hour security service for your peace of mind and of course we are only about half an hour from Malaga’s international airport, putting us within easy reach of almost any destination in the world. A property in La Cala Resort represents one of the most secure investments you can make. The complex is owned by

one of the longest-established and biggest Irish insurance companies, FBD Holdings plc, listed on the Dublin stock market. It has been developed with the intention of becoming one of the best residential and tourist complexes in southern Europe. As you can read elsewhere in this newsletter, many of our owners feel we may already have achieved this. Over 20 years we have seen market ‘crises’ before. Because we are owned by such a financially solid company as FBD, La Cala Resort has been able to continue investing and developing and has therefore always been in a position to offer purchasers high quality properties in an everimproving location. As this current crisis bottoms out, we know that the wise investor will see the huge advantage offered by this economic downturn and the possibility to secure quality properties at real value for money prices, prices that will not be repeated in the future. This year we have already seen growing interest in our properties from a range of nationalities with sales requests now increasing on a monthly basis. The current market conditions definitely favour the buyer and after many years of involvement with the real estate sector on the Costa del Sol, I can honestly say that there has never been a better time to invest. Regardless of where you decide to invest, all potential buyers should spare no effort to contract a law firm to make sure the property has all its licenses. You can rest assured that all our properties have all the necessary licenses and permissions and a development such as La Cala offers an excellent long-term investment opportunity and, equally importantly, peace of mind. Quality will always hold its price and the property investment mantra of the absolute importance of ‘location, location, location’ was never truer than in the case of La Cala Resort. However, we believe investors should look for even more and ‘location, licenses, quality’ certainly describes an investment in our resort.

James Reid & Sonya Foster

L

a Cala’s incoming captain, James Reid, together with his partner Sonya Foster took possession of an apartment in the Los Altos development in 2004 to use as a holiday home. They were so impressed with life in the resort that they also bought a house in Las Colinas del Golf the following year. James, who was a director of an international public company that provided computer services and software, explains they originally bought the apartment as a holiday home and then decided to live permanently in the complex. “I had been in La Cala many times playing golf as my mother had a holiday home in Calahonda. I always thought it was a beautiful place and when I retired I decided to buy a holiday home myself in the area. I viewed many other developments but none compared to La Cala. I bought the Los Altos apartment off-plan and was the first person to reserve in the development in 2000. I really liked the resort and decided to retire here and looked at the showhouse in the Las Colinas development. I thought there was no point in buying a place like that if you’re not going to live there. We still have the apartment but we wanted a garden and a bit more space. We are very happy with move, it has worked out very well and it is also nice to have the apartment for family.”

Sonya says there are many attractions to living in La Cala. “Of course the climate is great and here in the resort there are fantastic views and three good golf courses. It is also nice and quiet but still near the beach and the airport. I run a hair and beauty clinic in London and only have to return every three months or so as I can stay in contact by internet. I had been here on holidays before and now I love living here.” James and Sonya are keen golfers and James will be the next captain of the golf club. He says golf plays a big part in their lives. “The big advantage of playing golf is you build up a wide circle of friends. This is one of the most active clubs along the coast and we get more people playing in the weekly members’ competitions than others. Additionally, there are fewer members returning to their home countries in the summer so we have at least two club competitions a week throughout the year. There is a great social element and new members are also very welcome. We are here to stay. A lot of people don’t like living in Gordon Brown’s Britain and we have absolutely no regrets in moving here and have no plans to return.”

The Goorhuis Family

O

ne family definitely happy with life in La Cala is the Goorhuis family from Holland. Eight years ago Herman and Thea stayed in Hotel La Cala on a golfing and sun trip. They loved the holiday so much they decided to buy a semidetached holiday home in Las Terrazas del Golf. Six happy years later they decided that as they were going to spend many more years in the resort, they would move to a larger property and have now spent the past two years in an imposing villa overlooking the 10 th hole of Campo Asia. Herman explains: “Terrazas was a very nice house but we needed more space. We were very happy there but the new house is even better as we come here for two weeks at a time about eight times a year. Our adult children also use it and our friends also come to visit.” Herman is a businessman with a number of commercial interests. He says spending time in

La Cala offers him the opportunity to relax. “It is such a pleasure to come here. In Holland everyone is always rushing around and there is no time for anything, even to eat. In the resort people are always smiling and you can really switch off. People in Andalucía are more relaxed than at home. It is great to have the choice of three courses and we are only eight minutes from the beach. In addition, living in the resort offers us a greater level of security, particularly as we are not here all year round.” Being from the Twente area of Holland, Herman says that La Cala Resort is well known. “Our two biggest football teams, FC Twente and Heracles Almelo, held training camps in the resort, so people know about it. Additionally, many Dutch golfers have played in La Cala and they always talk about how good and exciting it is to play here and how much they enjoyed it.”

The Widegrens

I

t is certainly a sign of the never-ending revolution in communications that La Cala has sold its first property to a couple who never visited the apartment before purchasing it. In May this year Thomas and Helena Widegren bought a fantastic three-bedroom penthouse in Real Altavista Golf through the internet. Thomas is the Regional Manager and Executive Chairman in the Middle East for Cavotec, a €150 million business with 37 companies around the globe. They electrify every third container crane in the world and are also involved in such diverse areas as mining equipment and tunnelling, airport systems and air-conditioning. Now based in Dubai, on Thomas’ retirement the Wildgrens plan to move back to their native Sweden and use their La Cala apartment as a holiday home. Thomas explains how they decided to invest in La Cala: “At the beginning we were looking in the south of France. But the winters are cold there and we decided to look further south. It was mentioned to me that the Swedish Golf Federation had been involved with la Cala Resort from the very beginning and we had also heard a lot of good things about La Cala from other Swedish people that we know. Connection-wise it is great. There are three different

airlines flying out of Malaga to Copenhagen and there are also links to everywhere in the world. We looked it up on the internet and received more information and photos from the Property Sales office. Our bank manager is based on the Costa del Sol and he visited the property and reported very favourably on it. There was a special offer on the apartment and we decided to buy before visiting the resort. We were also very well-treated by the sales staff. When we eventually saw it for the first time we were delighted. It was even better than in the photos.” Helena takes up the story: “It is magnificent. When we saw it, it was more impressive than what we expected. When I saw the view with the sea, mountains and valleys, I was enchanted. As we are both golfers, it was a big attraction to have three courses. In addition, it is not too near the sea, which gets too busy when all the tourists arrive in summer. We have quite a number of friends who live in the area and our two daughters and grandchildren can use it in summer. The quality of the apartment is similar to Dubai and it is well-run and operated. We are really looking forward to making great use of it and are so happy we decided to buy in La Cala Resort.”

We enjoy very much playing golf at la Cala and t he many associated social activities organised by the club as well as many new friendships amongst the growing community of residents.”

It is the friendliest Golf Club we have ever belonged to. Very, very pleased to have bought here.”

The Property Sales Staff Elena Montes lena was born in the UK, but from the age of four months she has lived in Marbella. With a Spanish father and an English mother, she is completely bilingual. After working in bathroom fittings sales in El Corte Inglés in Puerto Banús, Elena joined the Property Sales division at La Cala in 2004. She says she really enjoys the work: “After almost six years in La Cala I’m still very happy. There is a nice combination of office work and public relations. It is not difficult to sell a property here, it’s a matter of matching the right client to the right property. There is a normally a very positive reaction from the customers to everything about the resort. The views and the facilities they will probably have seen before they inquire about buying a property. Then when we show them what we have to offer, they are amazed by the quality of the finish and the fittings.”

E

Elena has worked during the peak selling years and during the recent market downturn. “When I first started in 2004 sales were quite high. There were also a lot of agencies active at that time. Then things started to quieten and now it looks like it’s picking up again. Golf is the main selling point and most of our clients are golfers. Getting family golf membership with the purchase is a great attraction. However, many people who don’t play golf also buy. They are attracted by the views and the golf courses. More and more, we find people who want to sell coastal properties and move to the resort for the tranquillity and lifestyle it offers.” Nicole Kniesel icole, who hails from Austria, has been working in Property Sales at La Cala Resort since 2007. She previously worked for Sotheby’s and Christie’s Real Estate. Nicole has a background in tourism and while working in the USA selling skiing holidays in Europe she decided to spend a summer in Spain and while studying Spanish in Málaga she fell in love with her teacher. When they decided to marry in 2006 they toured Málaga

N

looking for a suitable location and that is how Nicole first arrived at La Cala Resort. She loved it so much, she not only decided to have her wedding in the resort but then applied for a job. “I thought it would be a great company to work for. I liked the setting and the business so much. I was delighted when they called me a few months afterwards about a position and I then got the job in Property Sales. We are always very busy and have just completed a number of campaigns with the Marketing Department. There are always people coming in and inquiring about properties and we have been welcoming new owners from Scandinavia and Central Europe.” Yolanda Millez olanda is the newest member of the property sales team. Although born and raised in France, her parents are Spanish. She worked as the director of a large national construction company in France and came to the Costa del Sol seven years ago. She opened her own real estate business in Alhaurín de la Torre before recently joining the La Cala sales team.

Y

“I was surprised by the size of the complex when I first came here. I had heard positive things about Caracala Spa but had never been in the resort. The location and views are very impressive and the build quality of the properties is also very good. It is a superb location for golfers,” Yolanda comments. Yolanda is fluent in English, Spanish, French and Italian. She is working on developing relationships with estate agencies and golf organisations in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy as well as the Middle East. Beatriz Recari uses La Cala as a pre-season training base

O

ne of Spain’s promising tour players used the resort as a training base to prepare for the start of the European season. Beatriz Recari, who is from Pamplona, played all three 18-hole courses in the resort and also used the practice facilities at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy. She described the facilities in the resort as excellent. “The facilities are the best in the area. The three courses are fantastic. All three are challenging and you need to be thinking all the time about how to play each shot. The greens have plenty of borrows and are small so accuracy is very important. The driving range at the academy is also fantastic. I am very happy to be able to train at the resort and make use of the facilities. I think the quality of the courses in La Cala can be seen in that only two of the girls who gained their tour cards on Campo America four years ago failed to keep their place on tour. That shows

it was a very good test of golf and succeeded in identifying the better players.” Beatriz gained her tour card in La Cala in 2005, the same year as Tania Elosegui, who was part of the European team that played the USA in the Solheim Cup this year. This summer Beatriz had her best finish as a professional when she won the Finnair Masters in Helsinki, Finland. When she was in Australia in February preparing for the ANZ Masters in Brisbane she met scratch player Alastair Saunders at a driving range. Alastair is the son of La Cala’s Director of Golf, Alan Saunders. He emigrated to Brisbane with his wife and family last November. When Beatriz told him she was planning to spend Easter in Puerto Banús with her family, Alastair put her in contact with his father and Beatriz used La Cala as a training base. Beatriz says her main goal this season is to win a tour event. “After coming third in Finland I know I can win a tournament. I have been working hard in the gym to increase my distances and have added 10 metres to my drives. I want to add five more. I noticed when I was practising on Campo America that I was a couple of clubs longer than when I played the Q-school. I would also like to gain my card for the LPGA tour in the United States. I missed the cut in their Q-school last year but I learned a lot from the experience and have a better idea of what I need to improve on. I have made some swing changes as well as the gym work and now I’m seeing the benefits. I’ve also been working on my biomechanics with Jan Stromsrud of the Titleist Performance Institute in Norway.”

Famous Dutch footballer returns to La Cala

F

ootball coach and former Dutch international player, Danny Blind, was a return visitor to the resort this year. Now retired, he was a defender for top sides, including Sparta Rotterdam, Ajax Amsterdam and the Dutch national team. With Ajax he won all three European trophies (UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987, the UEFA Cup in 1992 and the UEFA Champions League in 1995). In addition, Blind was head coach at Ajax between 2005 and 2006 and is now the club’s Technical Director. This was his second visit to La Cala, having first visited the resort two years ago. He was on a week-long golfing break with his wife and friends and spoke to us after playing Campo America. “We go on foreign golfing trips twice a year but this is my second time in La Cala. I’m very, very impressed with the quality of the course and the stunning scenery. Last time I played Campo Asia and it was such a beautiful course that I promised myself that I would come back. The total package here is great. It is so relaxing to play and eat and have a drink after. I find that it really clears my head and as the Technical Director with a club as big as Ajax, I find that it can be difficult to switch off. We will seriously consider La Cala as a winter training destination for Ajax next year. I know that the resort has hosted many top teams and it is something we will look into.”

Danish International wins Second TaylorMade Junior Championship

T

he second TaylorMade Junior Championship, which took place at La Cala at the end of June, was a huge success with 114 players taking part. Limited to under-22s, the main competition was played over 18 holes on Campo Asia while the under-10s played a 12-hole competition on the resort’s par 3 course. The standard was very high with the scratch winner, Danish international Frederik Hammer, shooting a brilliant 5-under 67 to win by one shot from Min Sung Kim with Haiko Dana in third place on level par 72. Frederik won the British Open Junior Championships for under 14s last year and also represented Denmark in the European Young Masters in France. Frederik practises a lot at La Cala where his grandparents have an apartment and he also receives instruction at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy. The boys’ section for handicaps up to 16 went to Jordan Abbasciano De Marco with 68 off 9 handicap. The girls’ category up to 16 handicap category was won by Ana Pelaez with 80 off 7 handicap. Other section winners were: Tess

Melkert, Francisco José Mateo, Carlos Carrillo Del Olmo, Susana Gomez and Juan Aguera. This was one of the most successful junior events run at the resort and apart from the high number of participants, there was a great atmosphere with all the players and their parents happy with the organisation of the event. TaylorMade is one of the largest golf equipment manufacturers in the world. It is part of the Adidas group and in late 2005 it officially became the number 1 driver in golf. TaylorMade-adidas Golf had its first 1 billion dollar revenue year in 2006, marking only the second time a golf brand has achieved this in the history of the industry. Company spokesman Marco Cuevas said “We are proud to have sponsored this fantastic junior event at La Cala this year. Our aim is to help encourage and develop Junior Golf on the Costa del Sol. We will be privileged to sponsor this event for many years to come.” In addition to TaylorMade, the other sponsors were: The David Leadbetter Golf Academy, Fuengirola Adventure Golf, Funny Beach, Excel Golf and Hotel La Cala.

Parent & Child Competitions

T

he sixth annual Parent & Child competition held over the Easter period in April attracted a big number of entries this year with 30 pairings taking part. This is a fun event that gives parents and children the chance to play together and emphasises the family aspect of golf. There was a surprise for the competitors when one of Spain’s professional players on the Ladies European Tour (LET), Beatriz Recari, presented the prizes. The greensomes competition was played on Campo Asia, with the first prize going to Antonio Gonzalez Gonzalez and his eightyear old son Oscar Gonzalez Smith on 46 points. Alan Jewett and Sean Jewett were second on 43, with Bernard and Billy Flynn third on 40. Meanwhile, the second Parent & Child competition to be held during the summer took place in early August. It was decided to add a summer staging in addition to Easter due to a large number of requests from golfing families who thoroughly enjoy the format, as it offers the chance for two generations to play together. Thirty four pairings battled it out for the title. Played on Campo Europa, the format used was greensomes. Given the difficult format, where the players take every second shot, there were some very good results. The winners, Jorge Beltran

Daniel and Laureano Beltran Pinotti, managed 45 points. During the presentation of prizes, La Cala’s Golf Operations Manager, Gabriel De la Rosa, pointed out that in this age of internet and computer games it was great to see families enjoying a healthy sport in the open-air. The competitors were very pleased with the running of the competition with many already asking when the next competition will be held.

Maggie wins second Philip Fitzsimons Memorial Cup

T

he second Philip Fitzsimons Memorial Cup was won in late June by Maggie Coombes with an astounding 46 points on Campo Asia. The cup was inaugurated in memory of the former chief executive of FBD, who passed away in 2008 and is the prize for the annual past captains’ competition. Maggie’s husband, Merv, then proceeded to win the guest’s section with 38 points. This was not only a great family achievement but coincidentally reflected the result of the inaugural competition last year when the Cup was won by the 2005 captain Campbell McGarvie, while his wife, Sylvia, won the guest’s prize. This year Campbell could only manage second with 39 points, two more than the 37 that won him the cup last year. Judi Lentelink was third on 38.

Peugeot Challenge Cup

C

ongratulations to María del Carmen Noguero Aguililla who won the national final of the Peugeot Challenge Cup, played in Madrid, after also leading the qualification competition held at La Cala last April. Eighty four players took part in the La Cala event, played in testy, windy conditions on Campo Europa. María del Carmen’s 75 off 14 was the leading return by a lady, while Francisco Lozano Ruíz shot a nett 65 off 28 handicap to record the best men’s score. The best scratch score of the day was a 78 gross by Francisco Cervilla who won the low handicap category for men. In the national finals, Francisco came fifth, while María del Carmen will represent Spain in the international final in Paris. In fact,

this will be the second time she has qualified for the international final of the competition. The competition was organised in conjunction with the Fuengirola/Mijas Peugeot dealership, Bugar Motor. Managing Director, Pedro Narváez Martín said he was delighted with the organisation and staging of the event. “I’m very happy with how the day went. The feedback I have received from the players is that everyone is very satisfied. The great organisation here at La Cala makes it easy to organise the event. Although there was rain forecast the day remained dry and the only problems people had were in mastering Campo Europa.”

The winners: (L to R) Francisco Lozano Ruíz, Francisco Cervilla and María del Carmen Noguero Aguililla with Pedro Narváez Martín.

Top German coach holds training camp at La Cala Resort

O

The group of students with Martin Hasenbein, far right.

ne of the top German golf coaches, Martin Hasenbein, brought a group of 10 golfers for an eight-day long training camp in late April. Martin is the Head of Education with

the PGA of Germany and is Head-Coach of Golf Team Germany, an elite group of German professionals who play on various tours. Hasenbein says the idea behind the training trip to La Cala was for the students to practice like professionals. There was individual player analysis over two days and a lot of targeted practice sessions using Trackman and Sam Lab technology. He also held theoretical courses to improve strategy and technical aspects. He said he chose La Cala because of the practice facilities and was very complimentary about the level of organisation as many of his requests for his practice sessions were unique and they were all fulfilled to his satisfaction. Although La Cala is Spain’s largest golf resort with a total of 60 holes, Hasenbein said the group didn’t play much as it was a much more practiceorientated visit. “The players practised for four to six hours a day and then played nine holes. We identified early on the areas of their games that needed improvement and each student concentrated on those areas during the eight days. The reaction from all the group members was very positive and we hope to return to La Cala next year.”

The VI Promotur Circuit took place during August. The Promoters Association of Residential Tourism and Sports in Andalusia (PROMOTUR) is a non-profit business association which represents the main Andalusian companies involved in residential

tourism and sports. Association President Ramón Dávila, said it was an honour to have a complex such as La Cala as a member. He said that La Cala with its impressive range of sporting and leisure facilities encapsulates everything that Promotur stands for. He also announced that in recognition of the magnificence of the resort and to mark its 20th anniversary last July, that La Cala’s Managing Director, Denis Foley, had been made an honorary member of Promotur. The best score was recorded by 14-year old Adam Ford Gaspar who had 37 points off 11 handicap. As Adam fell below the age limit for qualification for the final to be held in Valle Romano in November, second-placed Mario Alberto Rueda Velasco will take his place. Third was Pablo Martin Kieliger, with the top-placed lady being Jill Davies in fourth. The day ended with a cocktail and a prizegiving ceremony in the resort clubhouse. The event was covered by two television stations, Costasur TV and 340 Television.

Eleventh staging of La Cala Resort Co-op Day

T

he eleventh La Cala Resort Co-op Day was held at the end of May. The day is organised as a mark of appreciation to all the agents and tour operators who collaborate with the resort throughout the year. Representatives of the largest operators on the coast as well as officials from the Costa del Sol’s Tourism Board attended the event. The day was divided between a 9-hole competition on Campo America, putting and chipping competitions, golf lessons and a tour of the facilities at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy. The day was completed by lunch on the clubhouse terrace.

tourism market. It was noted that the complex last year received the award as the Best Golf Resort in Andalucía, from the prestigious publication, Andalucia Golf. The long-term success of La Cala is seen as an example to other courses of how to survive economic downturns and subsequently avail of improvements in the international and local economies.

This event has now become a fixture on the golf calendar for the tour operators who are looking forward to another successful season. They were lavish in their praise for La Cala and the general opinion was that the resort has a range of top quality facilities and services that enable it to act as a point of reference in the golf-

Teams of four journalists from: Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, England, Italy and Ireland competed for the title, which was won by Ireland. The winning Irish team and the England team visited La Cala Resort in Mijas, Málaga on the day preceding the competition where they played Campo Europa, practice that obviously came in useful in the case of the Irish. The journalists all work with leading golf magazines and travel guides. It is hoped that the event will help increase the profile of the Costa del Sol as a leading golf destination. The reaction from the scribes to the La Cala complex and Campo Europa was totally positive with many planning a return visit.

Feria La Cala de Mijas Trophy

T

he 13th Feria La Cala de Mijas trophy played in July was a big success with almost 90 players taking part. The competition was played on Campo America in perfect conditions. This was reflected with some good scoring on slope adjusted handicaps. The competition was divided into three sections. The scratch to 11.4 handicap section went to Liam Power (6) with 35 points, while the 11.5 to 20.4 section was won by Pedro Escribano (17) with 39 points. The 20.5 to 36.4 handicap section went to Sonja Dietzel with 41 points. The winner of Category 1, Liam Power, commented that he has played competitions in many countries but had never played in such a well-organised event. He complemented the resort on the condition of the course and the excellent lunch and commented on the generosity of the sponsors who provided an excellent range of prizes.

AESGOLF Summer Circuit final

T

he final of the AESGOLF summer circuit was held at the end of August. The association is for men over 55 and women over 50. Over a hundred players entered the event, played on Campo America, one of three 18-hole courses in the resort, which is Spain’s largest golf complex. The participants came from all over Spain with a number of international entries and the level of interest was so high that there was a large waiting list in operation. The competition was followed by lunch and the prize-giving in the La Cala clubhouse where the association’s regional delegate, Edmundo Sánchez del Río, said the events that AESGOLF hold at La Cala are “the best organised” of any of the clubs they visit on the Costa del Sol. He added that the course was in magnificent condition and the reaction from all the players had been very positive.

Although the day was hot, being in the mountains, there was a lovely breeze and it was very pleasant. A circuit like this is very important in not only getting people to come and play on the Costa del Sol, but also in getting them to stay longer or return to compete in more of the events.”

Only one player managed to beat his handicap. Guillermo Hombravella not only won his category on the day but also won the category for handicaps up to 16 for the summer circuit. He pointed out that it was the first time he had played the circuit and was delighted with the organisation of all eight events, but the La Cala organisation had been the best of all. He also commented favourably on the large number of women playing in the event and described the course as “very demanding but magnificent.” One of the sponsors who played was Luís de la Maza, the Co-President of one of Spain’s largest banks, Cajamar.
