The insightful doc-style amalgamation features clever dialogues that serve as a cautionary tale of, essentially, what not to do. Shapiro’s interviews manage to be both articulate and stylistically cohesive despite the sizable spectrum of the subject’s perspectives, leaving the audience hopeful in the least self-helpy way possible. since their first release, 2006's Waiter, You Vultures!, a vaguely experimental take on indie pop characterized by lead singer John Gourley's distinctive warble and an adherence to moody, minor-key thematics. "When we started out, I didn't know how to play guitar," says Gourley, "I just really loved music." That considered, it was an auspicious debut by a band from a small town in Alaska.

text VI NGUYEN Los Angeles may be known for its glitz and glamour, but our fair city is good for more than snooty bouncers, exorbitant ticket prices, and arbitrary dress codes. Might we direct you to the places and parties which dwellers of the underground embrace? In contrast to the recent meteoric rise of commercial electronic dance music, left-field dance music has had a home here for over two decades, starting out in clandestine warehouse parties and eventually finding itself in the mix with slightly more established venues and parties. With the proliferation of the internet and its social media megaverse, we’re not sure that anything is truly underground anymore, but let’s give it up for some of the movers and shakers of the scene still imparting the underground spirit of techno, house, and drum’n’bass.

This techno collective started out when founders Vidal, Vangelis, and Mohamed put down the Super Nintendo and picked up a drum machine, laptops, and records, birthing what’s grown to become a label, production collective, blog, and events organizer. More importantly, the collective has helped redefine LA’s identity in the global landscape of electronic music, being recognized as a legitimate hub for techno and other left-field producers. Look out for their Interface events which meld techno together with innovative audio/visual elements to produce an immersive multi-media experience.
This female-run label and collective is all about blurred lines and connecting “the sound with the sensory.” With its foundation as a record label, Futra seeks out artists whose music can’t clearly be defined by genre, although admittedly, founder Tara LaPlante’s curatorial expertise is rooted in techno. Still, the collective embraces and actively seeks out ambiguity, organizing events that fuse together arts, design, and of course, music. In July, they held a hypnotic, polymedia shopping slash arts and music event, and their club nights have played host to Berlin-based Objekt, Romania’s Cosmin TRG, and the UK’s Dark Sky.
Quite possibly the longest-running drum’n’bass event in Los Angeles, Respect has been around since 1999. Each Thursday at The Dragonfly in Hollywood, Respect brings out a veritable lineup of leading international drum’n’bass DJs hailing from places like New Zealand and the Netherlands, although UK talent is in heaviest rotation. In a region where drum’n’bass events are rare to find, we’re especially thankful for the crew at Respect.

Melbostad has recently been named the new creative director of Diesel Black Gold, following last year’s announcement that Sophia Kokosalaki was leaving her three-year stint at the label. The Norwegian-born Melbostad, now the reigning creative czar of both Diesel Men’s and Women’s, has been assigned the epic mission of coordinating a global image for the iconic brand. His definitive men’s collection will debut this January during New York Fashion Week for the Autumn-Winter 2014 season.

expanded his sartorial credentials at heavyweight design houses like Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein, and Nina Ricci, giving up his latest position as a consulting designer at Roberto Cavalli to spearhead the most progressive line under Diesel’s umbrella. While his impressive resume would excite even the most casual laymen, for fashion heads, Melbostad’s most illustrious work to date was from his tenure as the former Creative Director of cult-adored, ready-to-wear line, Phi. Throughout Andreas’ time at the New York-based line, he explored his ability to make interesting shapes out of unexpected materials, cultivating a hard-edged, 80’s vibe for punks and party girls alike. Unfortunately, the economic downturn eradicated the brilliant label in 2009, but it’s muchtoo-brief run left the industry wanting more from the sartorial laureate. He was just too good to be out of the job. Fortunately for us, in 2012, Melbostad caught the eye of Renzo Rosso, president of Diesel and OTB, and the rest was history. A rep for Diesel raves, “Since joining the company, Andreas has been praised for his sophisticated style and cosmopolitan aesthetic, both of which support the brand’s contemporary premium DNA.” We sat down to chat with Melbostad about his plans for the powerhouse brand, his take on gender, and his penchant for iconic symbols. DIRECTOR OF BOTH MEN’S AND WOMENSWEAR AT DIESEL BLACK GOLD. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR PAST EXPERIENCES WITH MENSWEAR? This is my first venture into menswear. I have not previously worked with men’s, but menswear has always been an inspiration for my womenswear. I like the sense of wardrobe and structure that men’s gives. When I cut a jacket, shirt, or pants, it is often informed by men’s technique, cut, shape, and utility. At the same time, I enjoy the freedom that womenswear gives. The exploration of silhouette is much freer and the range of materials and techniques is much wider.Working on both men’s and women’s is an opportunity for me to further develop both aspects within the collection with the goal to give a singular identity across both. I love an attitude of irreverence and I love to think of my clients as individuals with a great sense of self and an unafraid drive to express themselves. This is what informs my overall approach. I want to give strength and confidence to the person that wears the clothes. My approach to men’s will be very similar to the women’s; the attitude is the same.

It was important for me to carry forward the codes established by Diesel Black Gold and it was also important to me to infuse the brand with my own sensitivity and vision. I have followed a very intuitive approach. Bringing myself into the collection has come very naturally and I have been very inspired by the DNA of the brand. The denim research and innovation is at the core of the identity and it has helped inform the attitude across all the other classification in the collection. Whether it is denim or not, it always comes back to a person that loves and wears jeans, so everything in the collection builds around this aspect. WE’RE GETTING A LITTLE AHEAD OF OURSELVES HERE, BUT YOUR RESORT COLLECTION FEATURING THE BANDANA WAS, IN OUR OPINION, BRILLIANT. IT EFFECTIVELY MARRIED THE BAROQUE PAISLEY PATTERN OF A BANDANA WITH ITS ICONIC AGGRESSION. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR DECISION BEHIND THAT? I love to work with iconic inspirations. I like pieces that have an almost cult recognition attached to them. I like when something is both timeless and irreverent; like a biker jacket or a bandana print. It is interesting for me to explore these iconic references and re-proportion or re-position them. I like bringing another context to them while keeping the authentic emotion that they signal. HOW MANY EXPENSIVE LEATHER JACKETS SHOULD A PERSON BUY IN A LIFETIME? WHY WILL THEY NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE? Hard to say. I know I have bought many over the years myself and I continue to be attracted to new ones. At Diesel Black Gold we view the biker jacket as an icon and we are looking to reinvent it every season.

WATCHING CHEFS PERFORM ON TELEVISION WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO FULLY EXPERIENCE THEIR WORK? That’s a really interesting one and I ask myself the same question from time to time. The thing about great food is that we went through a period where we had to learn to cook from our parents and our grandparents. We had family traditions in our homes. Then we sort of moved into an era where everybody was working so hard, two people from every household were at work, and there was less and less culture around food in the home. I think, eventually, you get to the place where you have your own family and kids and you actually want what you had, which is walking in and getting that home cooked meal, smelling something delicious, and wondering what they’ve made for you. I think that fascination with food is because that skill has been a little lost in the household, and it’s an interesting way that people fake it, which I am not complaining about!
ON A MORE PERSONAL NOTE, YOU WERE MARRIED THIS YEAR. CONGRATULATIONS ON THE WEDDING! BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, HOW WAS THE FOOD? Well, my guys cooked it, so it was delicious! I took my whole team over to Spain, and we did a seven-course menu for the actual wedding night. Lindsey’s favorite cake in the world is carrot cake, so I decided to try my hand at making a wedding cake. So I actually made the cake myself. It was good fun.

HOLLYWOOD O TROIS MEC In an unassuming Hollywood strip mall lies Trois Mec, pop-up master Ludo Lefebvre’s collaboration with Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo, the dudes who brought us the pork-centric eaterie, Animal. Here, reservations are taboo, but limited slots to dine are available for purchase. If you’re willing to overlook the stringent ticket system, you’ll be rewarded with some seriously inventive cuisine. WHAT TO GET: The menu’s contents aren’t public but a sampling of previous dishes include Potato Pulp, a creative use of the humble spud, cooked with bonito, brown butter, and onion soubise. MID-CITY O RED MEDICINE This ambitious restaurant made its mark with bold dishes drawing inspiration from Vietnamese cuisine. More recently, however, the menu has switched gears with a more naturalist approach, with many dishes incorporating foraged finds and produce from local farmers. The result is a menu of visually-arresting dishes, appearring as though they’ve emerged out of an enchanted forest. WHAT TO GET: The desserts are the way to roll here. The unassuming restaurant houses some of the most inventive and tasty cuisine to pop up on Beverly Hills’ “Restaurant Row.” True to its name, everything is made from scratch here, and menu items are listed with only slight clues to the Scratch Bar’s creative concoctions. WHAT TO GET: The Smoking Goat’s Milk Cheese arrives under a glass box, smoked with Timothy hay and is topped with tapenade and pickled vegetables for some necessary crunch and acidity. There’s a sacred ratio in the world of cocktail wizardry: approximately two parts alcohol, one part sweet, one part sour. Whatever your cocktail loyalty, their foundation is this tried-and-true ratio employed by bartenders worldwide. Brandyn Tepper, bartender-mixologist at Hinoki & The Bird, tells us, this ratio is the key to the consistency in the cocktail menu’s quality at Chef David Myers’ much acclaimed dining destination. Though whimsically named, the experts at Hinoki & The Bird don’t play around. While the restaurant is most famed for its culinary creativity (an innocuously labeled lobster roll is served on a ink-colored charcoal bun), the selection of carefully crafted cocktails has garnered acclaim of its own under the guidance of seasoned mixologist Sam Ross (Milk + Honey, Attaboy). Under Ross’ “18A” Cocktails program, the sacred ratio is a Rosetta Stone of sorts, or, as Tepper jokes, “It’s like a Mr. Potato Head. There’s a foundation, a magic ratio of drinks, but mix and match and you have a magic lineup of dazzling drinks.” By breaking classic cocktails into families and studying their formulas, 18A is arguably an institution in which prominent mixologists like Julian Cox have gained their footing. With such strict tenets in place, how does a bar program like Hinoki’s evolve? “It’s going to be the norm,” Tepper responds. “As bartenders, we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. We’re just helping it spin and deliver better than the last person.” Intrigued, we slide up to the bar to try the Griffith Park Swizzle prepared for us today. But before we taste, let’s take a moment to appreciate the magnificent hues of this splendid drink. Crushed ice ripples with brilliant color: a vibrant mint green base is topped with the golden tinge of bourbon, lime, and absinthe, while dashes of Angostura and Peychaud bitters make the drink’s scarlet crown. Clearly, this concoction is made to dazzle. As you lean down and lead your lips to the straw, a strategically placed mint sprig delivers a burst of freshness to the senses. Sip and a melange of flavors will treat your tastebuds: bitters and absinthe deliver heady floral and herbal notes, and combined with the bourbon, they make for an intense first taste. Meanwhile mint, lime, and a hint of sweet temper and invite. Absolutely beguiled, we ponder: if this is the way of the future, we can’t wait to grow old.
RECIPE 2 OZ. BOURBON
In a small tin combine sugar cube, mint leaves, lime

NO REST FOR THE WICKED COVER ILLUSTRATOR ERIC YAHNKER TALKS MAGIC BEANS, SLACKTIVISM, AND POLITICALLY CORRECT SNACK FOODS
You’re going to get the joke right away. If not, you’ll still smile. Relish in that smirk, you should be proud of yourself for “getting it,” so quickly, and good for you, you “it getter.” But before you reward yourself with that dutch wrap and fro-yo, take a closer look at that illustration, be caught off guard by the astonishing skill required in immortalizing those buttholes in that Indian headdress (see. Chiefy Chief 5 Bunghole Hat). For a man who had expected us humans to be extinct by now, satirist and graphite guru, Eric Yahnker is having one hell of a time capitalizing on the accumulative laughability of our western pop and political cultures. Yahnker’s idiosyncratic strain of lowbrow, fine art is brimming with irreverence, familiar characters, punch lines, and, of course, all those diner condiments. MAGIC BEANS . . . MYTH OR BREAKFAST? More like a prescription. DO YOU PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS? Pass me the ball and you’re probably not getting it back. WHAT KIND OF BIRD ARE YOU? Ivory-billed woodpecker. HISTORICAL CRUSH? Col. Sanders.
