NOTED KEEPING CONTENT Among the seemingly endless abyss of pinterest boards and regurgitated Tumblr feeds, lies our newest cyber obsession: The Great Discontent. Finally, a truly inspiring blog we can get behind with genuinely original and fresh content. Aside from the incredibly responsive and all-around striking design of the site itself, The Great Discontent is a weekly journal focusing on creativity, risk, and what connects us as artists. Published by Ryan & Tina Essmaker of No Little Plans creative studio, the blog has become one of our favorite destinations for inspirational interviews with people in the creative industry. Step off, Tumblr. We got real shit to read now. THEGREATDISCONTENT.COM // NOLITTLEPLANS.IS

STREET STYLE Recently, Kanye made a cameo at Pusha-T’s listening party and began spontaneously speedbagging about the state of streetwear, citing his experience at MAGIC in Vegas—pause—as proof of the fashion genre’s inauthentic use of sports jerseys, camo and the general bastardization of Pyrex Vision. Anyways, ‘Ye has a point, and while couture jerseys are clearly trending, shouts to UPXUNDR for staying on their chic James Perse shit. Basic palettes and lux fabric choices sans digits and wacky prints keep the hyped new line pretty neo-Dada, giving our retinas a well-deserved vacation. Can we get a rosy hue for Cam though? INTERNET FAMOUS If there’s anything we love more than exquisite texture and free parking, it’s clever, self-aware, girly rappers who lace astute pop culture references over syrupy beats. Kitty Pryde rose to Internet fame via her YouTube single “Ok Cupid” and is now opening for gap-toothed, rap-nerd favorite Danny Brown. Verses like, “That asshole said he can’t stand me on YouTube wearing some dumb Slayer band tee/ Have fun dealing with my 6 fans/ Saying I copied Odd Future, what the fuck is wrong with you? I’m just a little girl, stop picking on me on the Internet/ Telling people to be mean to me on Last FM, OK?/ I’m telling on you,” make us miss our AIM profiles. KITTYDOTHEDISHES.TUMBLR.COM

THE BACHELOR Before you amend your irreverent OkCupid profile or go on that second Tinder date, let’s take a look inward, shall we? Much like solid abs, the secret to attaining a sustainable romantic relationship is about as mysterious as eating healthy and working out. Oscar-nominated filmmaker (Muderball), former Spin Magazine editor and serial monogamist Dana Shapiro, went on a cross-country mission in search of ripostes and amorous insight for his latest book, You Can Be Right, (Or You Can Be Married). Turns out, a nuanced combination of chemistry and effort is the elusive alchemy for a solid partnership. The insightful doc-style amalgamation features clever dialogues that serve as a cautionary tale of, essentially, what not to do. Shapiro’s interviews manage to be both articulate and stylistically cohesive despite the sizable spectrum of the subject’s perspectives, leaving the audience hopeful in the least self-helpy way possible. As a 98-year-old Pauline sums it up, “You have to be sexually compatible. That’s very important. If anyone tells you differently, they’re nuts.” Hear, hear. DANAADAMSHAPIRO.COM

PORTUGAL. THE MAN HAVE BEEN FLIRTING WITH MAINSTREAM RECOGNITION

since their first release, 2006's Waiter, You Vultures!, a vaguely experimental take on indie pop characterized by lead singer John Gourley's distinctive warble and an adherence to moody, minor-key thematics. "When we started out, I didn't know how to play guitar," says Gourley, "I just really loved music." That considered, it was an auspicious debut by a band from a small town in Alaska.

NOBODY LISTENS TO TECHNO

21

O

text VI NGUYEN Los Angeles may be known for its glitz and glamour, but our fair city is good for more than snooty bouncers, exorbitant ticket prices, and arbitrary dress codes. Might we direct you to the places and parties which dwellers of the underground embrace? In contrast to the recent meteoric rise of commercial electronic dance music, left-field dance music has had a home here for over two decades, starting out in clandestine warehouse parties and eventually finding itself in the mix with slightly more established venues and parties. With the proliferation of the internet and its social media megaverse, we’re not sure that anything is truly underground anymore, but let’s give it up for some of the movers and shakers of the scene still imparting the underground spirit of techno, house, and drum’n’bass.

DROID BEHAVIOR

FUTRA

RESPECT

This techno collective started out when founders Vidal, Vangelis, and Mohamed put down the Super Nintendo and picked up a drum machine, laptops, and records, birthing what’s grown to become a label, production collective, blog, and events organizer. More importantly, the collective has helped redefine LA’s identity in the global landscape of electronic music, being recognized as a legitimate hub for techno and other left-field producers. Look out for their Interface events which meld techno together with innovative audio/visual elements to produce an immersive multi-media experience.

This female-run label and collective is all about blurred lines and connecting “the sound with the sensory.” With its foundation as a record label, Futra seeks out artists whose music can’t clearly be defined by genre, although admittedly, founder Tara LaPlante’s curatorial expertise is rooted in techno. Still, the collective embraces and actively seeks out ambiguity, organizing events that fuse together arts, design, and of course, music. In July, they held a hypnotic, polymedia shopping slash arts and music event, and their club nights have played host to Berlin-based Objekt, Romania’s Cosmin TRG, and the UK’s Dark Sky.

Quite possibly the longest-running drum’n’bass event in Los Angeles, Respect has been around since 1999. Each Thursday at The Dragonfly in Hollywood, Respect brings out a veritable lineup of leading international drum’n’bass DJs hailing from places like New Zealand and the Netherlands, although UK talent is in heaviest rotation. In a region where drum’n’bass events are rare to find, we’re especially thankful for the crew at Respect.

Falsetto vocals, bouncy synth-pop beats, and a fusion of retro and futuristic dance tracks make Mystery Skulls a force to be reckoned with, a funky fusion of Chromeo, Yeasayer, and Daft Punk all rolled into one. GALLERY OPENINGS RICHARD AVEDON: WOMEN Gagosian Gallery November 1st – December 21st Opening Reception: Friday, November 1st, 6 pm Photographs by the legendary photographer Richard Avedon will be exhibited in an all-encompassing display at Gagosian Beverly Hills. The exhibition will feature some of Avedon’s famous photographs of models in motion—household names like Ingrid Boulting, Gisele Bündchen, and Twiggy, along with other stunning black and white imagery of the female form. gagosian.com JOEL OTTERSON: CHANDELIER QUEER Maloney Fine Art November 1st – December 21st Opening Reception: Friday, November 1st, 6 pm This exhibition will load the ceiling with three fetishized chandeliers made of hundreds of goblets from the 50s, 60s, and 70s that mimic the silhouette of a Baccarat chandelier. Otterson attempts to demonstrate that pop art remains vibrant as it continues to undermine authoritative definitions of what constitutes aesthetic value. maloneyfineart.com MICHAEL BRUNSWICK: 79TH ORGAN GUSFORD | los angeles November 8th – December 21st Opening Reception: Friday, November 8th, 7 pm For his first solo show with the gallery, Brunswick will reveal a new series of paintings, exemplifying a distinctive technique that he has been developing for the past decade. 79th Organ focuses on largescale abstract works, in color and black and white, and characterized by slick, iridescent surfaces of illusory movement and depth. Pools of paint mix and mingle on the surface of the canvas, evoking the microscopic, the cosmic, and the corporal. gusfordgallery.com ERIC WHITE Martha Otero Gallery November 9th – December 21st Opening Reception: Saturday, November 9th, 8 pm In his first solo show with Martha Otero Gallery, Eric White presents three masterpieces along with a curated collection of semi-surreal portraits, rich with nostalgia and meticulously executed. His greatest work, Endogene Depression, originally exhibited in 1980, investigates themes of history and technology, of ritual and ruin. Twenty television sets in various states of disrepair are arranged in a roughly circular formation while chunks of rubble are strewn about intensifying the notion of creation and destruction. theboxla.com MATTHEW BRANNON David Kordansky Gallery November 16th – January 18th, 2014 Opening Reception: Saturday, November 16th, 6 pm Brannon’s images depict contemporary, metropolitan life, ranging from a conventional, everyday viewpoint to a more rarefied and luxurious one. Quasi-poetic phrases are incorporated into seemingly innocuous images and sculptures, suggesting darker undertones and allowing the visitor to decipher its “true” meaning. davidkordanskygallery.com DAVID LYNCH: NAMING Kayne Griffin Corcoran November 23rd – January 11th, 2014 Opening Reception: Saturday, November 23rd, 6 pm In a new installment of paintings, Lynch plays with surface, combining multiple mediums to a single canvas to create texture and depth. Andreas

Melbostad has recently been named the new creative director of Diesel Black Gold, following last year’s announcement that Sophia Kokosalaki was leaving her three-year stint at the label. The Norwegian-born Melbostad, now the reigning creative czar of both Diesel Men’s and Women’s, has been assigned the epic mission of coordinating a global image for the iconic brand. His definitive men’s collection will debut this January during New York Fashion Week for the Autumn-Winter 2014 season.

expanded his sartorial credentials at heavyweight design houses like Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein, and Nina Ricci, giving up his latest position as a consulting designer at Roberto Cavalli to spearhead the most progressive line under Diesel’s umbrella. While his impressive resume would excite even the most casual laymen, for fashion heads, Melbostad’s most illustrious work to date was from his tenure as the former Creative Director of cult-adored, ready-to-wear line, Phi. Throughout Andreas’ time at the New York-based line, he explored his ability to make interesting shapes out of unexpected materials, cultivating a hard-edged, 80’s vibe for punks and party girls alike. Unfortunately, the economic downturn eradicated the brilliant label in 2009, but it’s muchtoo-brief run left the industry wanting more from the sartorial laureate. He was just too good to be out of the job. Fortunately for us, in 2012, Melbostad caught the eye of Renzo Rosso, president of Diesel and OTB, and the rest was history. A rep for Diesel raves, “Since joining the company, Andreas has been praised for his sophisticated style and cosmopolitan aesthetic, both of which support the brand’s contemporary premium DNA.” We sat down to chat with Melbostad about his plans for the powerhouse brand, his take on gender, and his penchant for iconic symbols. CREATIVE

DIRECTOR OF BOTH MEN’S AND WOMENSWEAR AT DIESEL BLACK GOLD. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR PAST EXPERIENCES WITH MENSWEAR? This is my first venture into menswear. I have not previously worked with men’s, but menswear has always been an inspiration for my womenswear. I like the sense of wardrobe and structure that men’s gives. When I cut a jacket, shirt, or pants, it is often informed by men’s technique, cut, shape, and utility. At the same time, I enjoy the freedom that womenswear gives. The exploration of silhouette is much freer and the range of materials and techniques is much wider.Working on both men’s and women’s is an opportunity for me to further develop both aspects within the collection with the goal to give a singular identity across both. THERE SEEM TO BE SOME DISTINCT SIMILARITIES BETWEEN DIESEL BLACK GOLD AND THE REGRETTABLY EXTINCT, PHI. INTERESTING TEXTURE, PROGRESSIVE YET VERY WEARABLE SLEEK

CELEBRATED REBELLIOUS CHIC BEFORE THE REST OF THE SARTORIAL HERD, LEADING THE “COOL” 80S RENAISSANCE. WHAT DOES “COOL” MEAN TO YOU? DOES IT HAVE DIFFERENT DEFINITIONS FOR EACH GENDER? I love an attitude of irreverence and I love to think of my clients as individuals with a great sense of self and an unafraid drive to express themselves. This is what informs my overall approach. I want to give strength and confidence to the person that wears the clothes. My approach to men’s will be very similar to the women’s; the attitude is the same.

49

DIESEL BLACK GOLD HAS SUCH AN ESTABLISHED AESTHETIC. HAS IT BEEN DIFFICULT TO TRY AND FURTHER THE VOICE WHILE KEEPING THE COLLECTIONS COHESIVE? TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT DANCE. It was important for me to carry forward the codes established by Diesel Black Gold and it was also important to me to infuse the brand with my own sensitivity and vision. I have followed a very intuitive approach. Bringing myself into the collection has come very naturally and I have been very inspired by the DNA of the brand. The denim research and innovation is at the core of the identity and it has helped inform the attitude across all the other classification in the collection. Whether it is denim or not, it always comes back to a person that loves and wears jeans, so everything in the collection builds around this aspect. WE’RE GETTING A LITTLE AHEAD OF OURSELVES HERE, BUT YOUR RESORT COLLECTION FEATURING THE BANDANA WAS, IN OUR OPINION, BRILLIANT. IT EFFECTIVELY MARRIED THE BAROQUE PAISLEY PATTERN OF A BANDANA WITH ITS ICONIC AGGRESSION. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR DECISION BEHIND THAT? I love to work with iconic inspirations. I like pieces that have an almost cult recognition attached to them. I like when something is both timeless and irreverent; like a biker jacket or a bandana print. It is interesting for me to explore these iconic references and re-proportion or re-position them. I like bringing another context to them while keeping the authentic emotion that they signal. HOW MANY EXPENSIVE LEATHER JACKETS SHOULD A PERSON BUY IN A LIFETIME? WHY WILL THEY NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE? Hard to say. I know I have bought many over the years myself and I continue to be attracted to new ones. At Diesel Black Gold we view the biker jacket as an icon and we are looking to reinvent it every season.

CHARLIE MCDOWELL LIVES BELOW YOU Usually the trolls live under the bridge. In Charlie McDowell’s case, he lives under the trolls. A lesser man might have relocated, but McDowell, an AFI alum and, like, really good listener, tolerated the girls upstairs—and luckily for us, documented them as well. Their profound discourses about Bravo, sideboob and The Cheesecake Factory mused for his hilarious blog turned book Dear Girls Above Me. Evidently unsatisfied with just writing credits under his belt, Mcdowell recently added filmmaker to his multihyphenate resume, directing his first feature The One I Love. The psychological Jonzeian dramedy stars Mark Duplass and Elizabeth Moss as a couple in pursuit of their better selves; an amusing and authentic take on the nuanced complexities of a relationship. Perhaps that involuntary eavesdropping served as insight into the feminine mystique for the introspective director? Regardless, there’s no doubt that The One I Love will be one to watch as it makes festival rounds, as McDowell has found his voice with this one. DEARGIRLSABOVEME.COM

DOUG EMMETT: THE SUNDANCE KID For an East Coast transplant, Doug Emmett is having no trouble making friends in LA. Emmett’s cinematography has graced the screens of independent theatres and major cinemas alike, earning him an elusive cocktail of simultaneous commercial and critical acclaim. Last year’s Sundance proved to be an overwhelming success for the DP, with both The Bachelorette and 28 Hotel Rooms showing at the distinguished festival. This year, the profitability and attendance of both Paranormal Activity 4 and The To Do List showcased his aesthetic range and, for those familiar to the filmmaking process, his considerable resourcefulness. The juggernaut’s well-rounded style is big and beautiful, ascertaining that beauty can be attained under any circumstance. Predictably his 2013 efforts mirror Emmett’s foregoing indie/commercial dichotomy, with the unreleased Sony thriller The Remaining, Sundance hopeful The Untitled Chris Messina Project and MTV show, Faking It promising to make our 2014 down time significantly more scenic. STONE’S THROW AWAY CHEF CURTIS STONE IS LEAVING YOUR LIVING ROOM FOR THE RESTAURANT AROUND THE CORNER

79 EVER SAT GLUED TO YOUR TELEVISION ANGUISHED OVER YOUR INEXPLICABLE decision to flip to the Food Network or Top Chef Masters when you were just lamenting the pitiful state of your empty fridge? If so, chances are you’ve spotted culinary, multi hyphenate Curtis Stone on the screen, doing everything from cooking to judging and hosting. We caught up with the prolific cookbook author and host of Top Chef Masters as he dishes on his new restaurant Maude, the LA culinary scene, food-obsessed television, and his recent nuptials.

EVERYONE IS EXCITED ABOUT YOUR NEW RESTAURANT PURCHASE IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT IT AND WHAT INSPIRED THE NEW VENTURE? I am really excited about it too. It has been a dream of mine for quite a few years to have a tiny, little restaurant that I could just

THE ABILITY TO DO SO REMARKABLY WELL ON TELEVISION WHEN THE VIEWER IS UNABLE TO TASTE, SMELL, OR TOUCH WHAT IS BEING PRESENTED HAS ALWAYS INTRIGUED US.

WHY DO YOU THINK WE ARE SO ENTHRALLED WITH

WATCHING CHEFS PERFORM ON TELEVISION WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO FULLY EXPERIENCE THEIR WORK? That’s a really interesting one and I ask myself the same question from time to time. The thing about great food is that we went through a period where we had to learn to cook from our parents and our grandparents. We had family traditions in our homes. Then we sort of moved into an era where everybody was working so hard, two people from every household were at work, and there was less and less culture around food in the home. I think, eventually, you get to the place where you have your own family and kids and you actually want what you had, which is walking in and getting that home cooked meal, smelling something delicious, and wondering what they’ve made for you. I think that fascination with food is because that skill has been a little lost in the household, and it’s an interesting way that people fake it, which I am not complaining about!

ON A MORE PERSONAL NOTE, YOU WERE MARRIED THIS YEAR. CONGRATULATIONS ON THE WEDDING! BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, HOW WAS THE FOOD? Well, my guys cooked it, so it was delicious! I took my whole team over to Spain, and we did a seven-course menu for the actual wedding night. Lindsey’s favorite cake in the world is carrot cake, so I decided to try my hand at making a wedding cake. So I actually made the cake myself. It was good fun.

LOVE BEING IN A SMALL KITCHEN WITH A GROUP OF PASSIONATE AND COMMITTED GUYS WHO WORK REALLY HARD TO PRODUCE BEAUTIFUL FOOD. THAT’S PROBABLY BEEN THE BIGGEST PART OF MY CAREER AND WHY I AM GOING BACK TO IT—CERTAINLY NOT FOR THE MONEY.

EPICUREAN GEEKERY If your culinary skills are limited to scrambling eggs and microwaving MSG, you may need some cooking inspiration on a grander scale. Thankfully, Los Angeles is full of kitchen maestros who’ve got the fine art of satiating bellies and igniting the senses down to a science. Some call it molecular gastronomy, while others call it avant garde or modernist cuisine. Whatever it is, if creations like dragon’s breath popcorn and smoking goat’s milk cheese spark your gastronomic curiosity, peruse our list for the scoop on restaurants whose epic creations are the stuff of culinary magic. MID-CITY O SAAM / THE BAZAAR For one of the most exciting and entertaining dining experiences in the city, visit SAAM, Jose Andres’ “Chef’s Tasting Room” at the SLS Hotel. Essentially a restaurant within a restaurant, SAAM is a 40 seat dining space offering a set tasting menu of 20+ dishes for $120 a head. WHAT TO GET: A dinner and a show are in store when you visit SAAM. Dragon’s Breath Popcorn is a fun, bite-sized, caramel-corn morsel which, when eaten, allows one to breathe liquid nitrogen “smoke” through the nose. Other recent dishes have included a Peking Dumpling, made of a cotton candy wrapper and stuffed with chicharron and hoisin sauce. thebazaar.com/beverly-hills-saam

HOLLYWOOD O TROIS MEC In an unassuming Hollywood strip mall lies Trois Mec, pop-up master Ludo Lefebvre’s collaboration with Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo, the dudes who brought us the pork-centric eaterie, Animal. Here, reservations are taboo, but limited slots to dine are available for purchase. If you’re willing to overlook the stringent ticket system, you’ll be rewarded with some seriously inventive cuisine. WHAT TO GET: The menu’s contents aren’t public but a sampling of previous dishes include Potato Pulp, a creative use of the humble spud, cooked with bonito, brown butter, and onion soubise. Past winners are the avocado with sushi rice and salt cod creme, and the buckwheat “popcorn.” troicmec.com

MID-CITY O RED MEDICINE This ambitious restaurant made its mark with bold dishes drawing inspiration from Vietnamese cuisine. More recently, however, the menu has switched gears with a more naturalist approach, with many dishes incorporating foraged finds and produce from local farmers. The result is a menu of visually-arresting dishes, appearring as though they’ve emerged out of an enchanted forest. WHAT TO GET: The desserts are the way to roll here. Try their Shaved Ice of Redwood Stems, topped with sour red currant berries and jelly, crème chiboust flavored with jasmine flowers, crispy rice crackers, verbena bubbles, and roasted almond praline. Feeling guilty tapping into this gorgeous dessert? Dont, you won’t regret it. redmedicinela.com

BEVERLY HILLS O SCRATCH BAR The term gastropub is often casually thrown about, and in the case of Scratch Bar, its categorization is as innocuous as ever. The unassuming restaurant houses some of the most inventive and tasty cuisine to pop up on Beverly Hills’ “Restaurant Row.” True to its name, everything is made from scratch here, and menu items are listed with only slight clues to the Scratch Bar’s creative concoctions. WHAT TO GET: The Smoking Goat’s Milk Cheese arrives under a glass box, smoked with Timothy hay and is topped with tapenade and pickled vegetables for some necessary crunch and acidity. Also try the Pork Belly and Raw Oyster roll for a slick convergence of textures, topped with fragrant coconut-chamomile foam. scratchbarla.com

WEST HOLLYWOOD O INK. Chef Michael Voltaggio’s first formal restaurant, Ink. is home to some of the most cutting-edge cuisine in the city, with the tattooed chef bringing with him a bevy of respected experience, including time at the aforementioned SAAM and a win on season six of Top Chef. Expect exciting cuisine which integrates a bevy of modern techniques and unusual combinations in textures and produce. WHAT TO GET: We’re oh-so intrigued with recent dishes like Asparagus cooked with hay and served with goat’s milk ice and Medjool dates, along with the Egg Yolk Gnocchi with mushroom brown butter and hen-of-the-woods. For dessert, try the apple with creme caramel, walnut and burnt wood semi freddo. pizzeriailfico.com

HINOKI & THE BIRD’S BARTENDER BRANDYN TEPPER TALKS SACRED RATIOS text VI NGUYEN photo RACHEL MANY Have you heard? There’s a sacred ratio in the world of cocktail wizardry: approximately two parts alcohol, one part sweet, one part sour. Whatever your cocktail loyalty, their foundation is this tried-and-true ratio employed by bartenders worldwide. Brandyn Tepper, bartender-mixologist at Hinoki & The Bird, tells us, this ratio is the key to the consistency in the cocktail menu’s quality at Chef David Myers’ much acclaimed dining destination. Though whimsically named, the experts at Hinoki & The Bird don’t play around. While the restaurant is most famed for its culinary creativity (an innocuously labeled lobster roll is served on a ink-colored charcoal bun), the selection of carefully crafted cocktails has garnered acclaim of its own under the guidance of seasoned mixologist Sam Ross (Milk + Honey, Attaboy). Under Ross’ “18A” Cocktails program, the sacred ratio is a Rosetta Stone of sorts, or, as Tepper jokes, “It’s like a Mr. Potato Head. There’s a foundation, a magic ratio of drinks, but mix and match and you have a magic lineup of dazzling drinks.” By breaking classic cocktails into families and studying their formulas, 18A is arguably an institution in which prominent mixologists like Julian Cox have gained their footing. With such strict tenets in place, how does a bar program like Hinoki’s evolve? “It’s going to be the norm,” Tepper responds. “As bartenders, we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. We’re just helping it spin and deliver better than the last person.” Intrigued, we slide up to the bar to try the Griffith Park Swizzle prepared for us today. But before we taste, let’s take a moment to appreciate the magnificent hues of this splendid drink. Crushed ice ripples with brilliant color: a vibrant mint green base is topped with the golden tinge of bourbon, lime, and absinthe, while dashes of Angostura and Peychaud bitters make the drink’s scarlet crown. Clearly, this concoction is made to dazzle. As you lean down and lead your lips to the straw, a strategically placed mint sprig delivers a burst of freshness to the senses. Sip and a melange of flavors will treat your tastebuds: bitters and absinthe deliver heady floral and herbal notes, and combined with the bourbon, they make for an intense first taste. Meanwhile mint, lime, and a hint of sweet temper and invite. Absolutely beguiled, we ponder: if this is the way of the future, we can’t wait to grow old.

O LAST LOOK

NO REST FOR THE WICKED COVER ILLUSTRATOR ERIC YAHNKER TALKS MAGIC BEANS, SLACKTIVISM, AND POLITICALLY CORRECT SNACK FOODS

You’re going to get the joke right away. If not, you’ll still smile. Relish in that smirk, you should be proud of yourself for “getting it,” so quickly, and good for you, you “it getter.” But before you reward yourself with that dutch wrap and fro-yo, take a closer look at that illustration, be caught off guard by the astonishing skill required in immortalizing those buttholes in that Indian headdress (see. Chiefy Chief 5 Bunghole Hat). For a man who had expected us humans to be extinct by now, satirist and graphite guru, Eric Yahnker is having one hell of a time capitalizing on the accumulative laughability of our western pop and political cultures. Yahnker’s idiosyncratic strain of lowbrow, fine art is brimming with irreverence, familiar characters, punch lines, and, of course, all those diner condiments. MAGIC BEANS . . . MYTH OR BREAKFAST? More like a prescription. DO YOU PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS? Pass me the ball and you’re probably not getting it back. WHAT KIND OF BIRD ARE YOU? Ivory-billed woodpecker. HISTORICAL CRUSH? Col. Sanders. CLINT EASTWOOD OR JOHN WAYNE? That’s like choosing which one of my nuts to lop off. Way too difficult. TITS OR ASS? Ass cheeks with nipples. SHOULD WE BOMB SYRIA? Probably not bomb them, but definitely take away their phone and texting privileges. WHERE DO YOU HANG OUT IN LA? Mostly on the Eastside and Little Tokyo, where the beer is cold and the karaoke’s hot. YOU RUN INTO YOUR 16-YEAR-OLD SELF, DOES HE THINK YOU’RE COOL? Nope. He’s too busy jerking off and popping zits to even notice me. LIST SOME NON-RACIST SNACK FOODS… Martin Luther King, Jr. Pizza Bites, Gandhi Grahams, NAACPita Strips IRREVERENCE IS AN ART IN AND OF ITSELF, WHEN DID YOU REALIZE IT WAS ADVANTAGEOUS? WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU HAD A PENCHANT FOR IT? I realized it was advantageous when it made the girlies squeal and boobies jiggle. I realized I had a penchant for irreverence as soon as I could spell it. SLACKTIVISM . . . PANDEMIC OR BREAKFAST? Three squares a day + midnight snack. TAKE IT OR TAKE A MESSAGE? BEN AFFLECK CALLS, YOU’RE ON THE POT . . . Take it. And then keep addressing him as Casey. WHAT DOESN’T EXIST NOW, THAT YOU THOUGHT WOULD EXIST BY NOW? Human extinction. I HOPE YOU’RE SITTING. I GOOGLED ‘LISTS OF SATIRISTS’ AND YOU WEREN’T ON ANY OF THEM . . . SSSSSSS . . . BUUUURRRN . . . WHAT’S YOUR FALL BACK? To keep calling myself a satirist until I make the list. THIS IS ONLY A SUGGESTION BUT MAYBE YOU COULD MARKET YOUR PORTFOLIO AS A LITMUS TEST FOR POTENTIAL SEXUAL PARTNERS, AND CONGRESSMEN... I have already been contacted by the N.S.A. and Amway. text VIJA HODOSY ERICYAHNKER.COM
