Thank You Volunteers! LACDC has a broad reach in the community and we could not do what we do without the considerable experience, talent, energy, and time that are generously contributed by the many volunteers who work with us in many different ways. Our Board is a volunteer group, and both on-going Fuller Lodge and ad hoc committees are peopled by volunteers. Volunteers are essential to the operations of the visitor centers in Los Alamos and White Rock. Whether it is Chamberfest, The Next Big Idea, Fair & Rodeo Parade, the Chamber Golf Tournament, Halloweekend, Farmers Market, or Winterfest, our events don’t happen without volunteers who are willing to get involved and help. Our Youth Business Grant Program relies on volunteers to evaluate and advise our young applicants. The list goes on. When we put together the invitation list for our recent holiday volunteer thank you reception the invitation list was more than eighty staff and volunteers. Fuller Lodge provided the perfect setting. Holiday music created a soft backdrop to pleasant conversation, decorations were festive, and photos of the year’s events showcased our volunteers in action. A special “thank you” goes out to Brad Burke at Hot Rocks Java Café for catering the event. We appreciate each and every one of you and hope you continue to support the LACDC. We hope the coming year with bring much happiness, friendship and community. Are you interested in learning about all the ways that you can be more involved? Contact Katy Korkos, 661-4816.

LACDC News Executive Director's Message - Happy New Year! The New Year has arrived again, just as I (and I’m sure you) expected. A business reporter from the New Mexican called me the other day to inquire about the local economy in Los Alamos.
Holiday Inn Express
My take is that there are many challenges here, like many places around the nation and world, but that in general Los Alamos is fairing relatively well. Laboratory funding has been strong, and that has kept the edge off of the general economic problems of the past year. Kevin Holsapple In comparing notes with the reporter about what he LACDC Executive Director perceived to be going on elsewhere in the area, it is clear that other communities have seen levels of business and job loss that we have not seen.

What if, just for this year, we make resolutions that keep us on the path to improvement? We could just do the things we’re already doing in our businesses, but try to do them better. I wish all of you a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!" Katy Korkos

I ran across an interesting presentation on the internet that illustrates what is happening out there. It is a time lapse look at Bureau of Labor Statistics employment data over the past several years that visually shows you what is happening county-by-county across the U.S. Have a look if you have a minute at http://ow.ly/LBbB -- you’ll see that our County is a tiny beacon of relative stability. Let’s count our blessings, and continue to do our best to improve our businesses and community, even in tough economic times.
Web site Enhancements LACDC has implemented a number of web site enhancements in recent weeks to improve content and navigation of the information on our sites. Take a look if you haven’t seen these. The Chamber of Commerce web site (www.losalamoschamber.com) has been worked over to improve navigation and appearance.
The presentation of events calendars has been improved on our online visitor guide (http://visit.losalamos. com) and our local’s guide (www.fyiLA. com). Continued on page 3 Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation
LACDC News Suzette Fox Joins LACDC The Los Alamos Commerce & Development Corporation (LACDC) is pleased to announce the arrival of Suzette Fox, hired recently as the Community Projects Coordinator. A resident of Los Alamos for the past nine years, Suzette has owned her own design business, Suzette Fox Interior Design, for eight of those years.
Suzette Fox Community Projects Coordinator
Prior to moving to Los Alamos, Suzette worked as editor for the Colorado Springs Home Builders Association (CSHBA). She moved to Los Alamos in 2001 and began working for the Santa Fe Home Builders Association (SFAHBA) where she coordinated the Santa Fe Haciendas – A Parade of Homes, the Home & Remodeling Show, Golf Tournament and several other promotional events.
Suzette replaces former Community Projects Coordinator, Jeremy Varela, who will be leaving LACDC soon to pursue a private business opportunity. "Our Community Projects Coordinator is our key person for our MainStreet events and for our various publications," says Kevin Holsapple, LACDC Executive Director. "Chamberfest, the Next Big Idea, Fair & Rodeo Parade, the Chamber Golf Tournament, Trick or Treat on MainStreet, and Winterfest are our big events and The Essence of Los Alamos & White Rock and our Mind Your Business newsletter are key publications. Suzette brings great experience from her work with events and publications in prior employment, and she has a great personality for working with the public. We think she'll be a great asset to LACDC." Suzette is enthusiastic about her goals for LACDC. “I would like to implement committees for each community event and an editorial committee for our publications. I would invite members to brainstorm ideas to make each event the best that it can be and to serve our members and the community with publications that are relevant to them,” says Suzette. For more information about serving on Suzette’s committees, please call 505-661-4844 or email Suzette at suzette@losalamos.org.

CHAMBER BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Brownell's Hallmark - Twenty Years And Going Strong! Steve and Judy Brownell knew they wanted to own their own business in New Mexico, and came here looking to do just that. They looked at businesses for sale in Santa Fe, but were happy to find exactly what they were looking for in Los Alamos. They purchased one of Los Alamos’ oldest businesses, Decol’s, from the previous owner, Jim Ritter, in February of 1990. Decol’s started up in 1946, about the same time as the original Metzger’s, selling a wide variety of things, including adding machines, phonograph needles and typewriters.

Steve says that he had to sell off a lot of things at the beginning to bring the store into the ‘90s, and to make room for the items he thought would appeal to locals. The store has since expanded twice, as space became available. Los Alamos appealed to the Brownells on many levels, but becoming part of the community and being part of people’s special occasions has been a bonus. There is always something new to see at the store- some people spend quite a while opening and reading all the cards, which makes it a great place to peoplewatch as well as a great place to shop. Stationery, wrapping paper, stuffed toys, collectibles, chocolates, calendars, journals and many other gift items round out the inventory of the Hallmark store, while the back corner is dedicated to camera buffs. The camera world has changed substantially since the store opened, with much of their early business revolving around film and then photo-processing, but Steve and long-time employee, camera department manager Eric Johnson, have stayed ahead of the curve, bringing in the latest digital cameras and keeping up with all of the current trends in specialized lenses and accessories. Many people prefer the personal service they get from Eric and Steve to shopping on the web, because they can always go back for more advice and instruction from real friendly people.

CommunityMatters And the winner is....Shopping Locally! After Kicking off the 3/50 project in November we have picked our first winner, Jennifer Olsen. Congrats Jennifer and thank you for shopping locally! The 3/50 Project is a program that we adopted to raise the awareness of shopping locally. The program challenges you to pick three business that you would miss most if they were gone, for example the local art supply store or hardware store then stop in and say hi, pick up something you know you needed or maybe a gift for someone. By making an effort to shop there more often you are making a difference. These businesses are the heart of our town, they are the ones that sponsor your child’s little league or the ones that wrapped your gift for you just because you asked. Businesses like Hill Diner, Los Alamos Fitness Center, CB Fox and several others have helped us promote the 3/50 project by telling people about it. We asked people in our
6
community to enter a drawing for $150.00 and tell us what their three favorite business in town were. Jennifer Olsen is our first winner or what will be an ongoing drawing. When asked why she shopped locally, Jennifer had this to say: “I enjoy shopping in Los Alamos because of the community. We have some great businesses. Brian is great, and the Coffee Booth is a great place to meet, have a sweet treat, and a cup of coffee or tea. Brian does a great job with roasting his own coffee. Metzger's often has the little bits and bobs that you need to get a job done. And a lot of times those same bits can't be found at some of the big box stores. CB Fox always offers great customer service. And they have a ton of stuff in their store. Andy Fox always makes sure that my kids get just the right shoes, and they have a great time chatting with him. And we love seeing Santa every year at the store. Local business owners are interested in helping out in the community.” So remember the next time you are thinking of running off the hill for that “bit or bob” you need….. We just might have it here in Los Alamos! For more information about the 3/50 project and how to enter to win 3-$50’s drawing visit fyiLA. com. Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation

Request for Applications "Small Projects" - Downtown Promotional Events If you have a great idea on how to include MainStreet in your next promotion or event, you may be eligible to receive up to $1,000 to go towards your promotion dollars. LACDC, through its Los Alamos MainStreet Program, is seeking applications for assistance and sponsorship of promotions and/or events to be held in downtown Los
Alamos between now and June 30th, 2010. We still have about $5,000 in grants to give away. For application information and to learn more about this great opportunity, please contact Community Projects Coordinator, Suzette Fox at 505-661-4844 or email suzette@losalamos.org. Applications are taken on a first come, first serve basis.
Grants Available For Curb Appeal Projects One conclusion from the Chamber of Commerce’s Community Assessment presentation last Spring is that our community could benefit from improvement of business curb appeal. Los Alamos MainStreet agreed with this conclusion and was successful in pursuing funding from Los Alamos County to use for matching grants to downtown businesses that will work on improving their curb appeal. Los Alamos MainStreet is inviting applications for matching grants. A link to application instructions and forms is available online at www.LAMainStreet.com. Grants of up to $500 are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Eligible projects will address curb appeal improvements such as signage, landscaping, sidewalk or façade improvements. The application materials include a curb appeal self-assessment, a resource listing, and a guide to container planting in Los

Alamos County developed by the local New Mexico State University extension office. Contact Bryan Farmer at LACDC, 661-4862 if you need assistance. You’ll see evidence around town of curb appeal work that has been done last summer by many individual shopkeepers and property owners. This includes, but is not limited to, the annual marigold planting by Central Park Square, the flowering basket displays, kiosks installed along Central, and other features of the Los Alamos Central Avenue streetscape project. The curb appeal grants are intended to provide additional incentive and assistance to these efforts. For ongoing application dead lines - see web site for details. www.LAMainStreet.com.

Volunteers demonstrate Assets In Action
by Chelo Rojas
My favorite aspect of CommUnity Matters is "Assets in Action." This program, designed by the Search Institute to create "Healthy Communities Healthy Youth," emphasizes the qualities everyone needs to be healthy, caring and responsible. Our volunteers epitomize those qualities. Sustaining positive relationships makes the difference in our community - between Chamber members and their customers, between community members and their neighbors and colleagues. and between volunteers and visitors. It's as simple as showing respect, demonstrating sincere teamwork, showing civil and courteous behaviors and following through on spoken agreements. Can these be measured? They can - with positive feedback over the years, with long-lasting positive working relationships, and with memories of how we helped each other get started in new business endeavor. In a small town where adversaries and conflicts often jump out of the front page, the positive human connections are what it's all about. Our volunteers, whether they help out at the visitor centers or serve on boards or committees, exemplify Assets every day. They leave visitors with positive, lasting impressions. As VolunteerMatch says "Volunteerism strengthens communities by making it easier for good people and good causes to connect." Thanks, volunteers!
